If You Own an Android TV Box and Game Controller, Pick Up Hotline Miami Right Now

Launching alongside SHIELD, NVIDIA’s Android TV set-top box, Hotline Miami is currently my favorite game for the Android TV platform. To play the game, a controller is needed as you assume the role of an antihero who battles Miami’s underworld of crime lords in the late 80s. As you will quickly find out, your thinking cap will come in handy, as you must plot out the best way to clear buildings full of baddies, and needless to say, this game isn’t rated “Mature 17+” for nothing.

Players can choose whether to go in guns blazing, as there is a very large arsenal for you to choose from. You can pick up shotguns, machine guns, machetes, and even beer bottles to hurl at your enemies. Although, I choose the more stealthy approach, waiting for thugs to walk past me, then blindsiding them with a baseball bat to the face. It helps keep the dogs and other enemies from being aware of your presence.

The game probably won’t win any awards for insane graphics, but that is part of the charm. It reminds me a lot of the old, top down scrollers, such as the first Grand Theft Auto game. If anyone here was a fan of the movie Drive, then the soundtrack featured in Miami Hotline will make you very happy, as it really helps set the mood while you are murdering and getting blood all over your clothes.

Do note, this appears to be an official port of the PC game, but thanks to its developers, the controls through a dedicated controller are amazing. And if you have a Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, you can find it on Amazon as well, instead of Google Play.

Priced at $4.99 with zero IAPs, this game has my official seal of approval.

Android M Feature: Quickly Uninstall Apps From Home Screens

This may seem like an incredibly minor change for Android M, one that probably doesn’t really deserve a write-up, but dammit, I appreciate the hell out of it. For far too long have I found myself annoyed at having to go find an app in the app drawer to then uninstall it through a long press-and-drag to the top of the screen, rather than use the shortcut to it that is already on a home screen. Others who uninstall apps often know exactly what I’m talking about.

Well, you can now quickly uninstall apps in Android M by using their shortcuts on home screens. Boom.

Be sure to checkout all of our Android M feature highlights!

Samsung Pay Launch Pushed to September, Likely to Debut With the Note 5

When Samsung made Samsung Pay official on the day they announced the Galaxy S6, they told us that the payment service would arrive at some point this summer, maybe as early as July. Shortly after that announcement, rumors surfaced suggesting that we should actually set our sights on September as the launch month, which depending on the day, still would technically be “summer.” A new report this afternoon out of Bloomberg suggests that Samsung Pay has actually been delayed until September to launch alongside the company’s next flagship phone, the Galaxy Note 5

According to Bloomberg, Samsung EVP Rhee In Jong said during an investor call today that Samsung Pay would debut in conjunction with the company’s next high-end mobile device. He didn’t specifically call it the next Galaxy Note, but September (around the IFA conference) has been the launch month of the Note series for years now.

While the push to September is disappointing, I’m just worried now that if Samsung Pay is going to arrive alongside the Note 5, does that mean Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge owners are going to have to wait even longer?

Comet Smartphone, With Its Fins and Knock-Off James Franco From Spring Breakers, is the Best New Fake Kickstarter Product

A phone with fins. Think about it. Oonce oonce oonce oonce. Keep thinking about it. “Hey guys, I’m knock-off Alien from Spring Breakers, and this phone floats!” Oonce oonce oonce oonce. Technology. Oonce oonce oonce oonce. (Insert model to distract you as she talks about dual camera mode, a feature that is at least two years old.) Oonce oonce oonce oonce. Wub wub wub. “Hey guys, I’m the CEO, and this phone, which will never ever launch (at least not in its current form or after four or five years worth of excuses as to why it hasn’t), is the future. It’s called Comet.”

That’s more or less the way the promo video for this hilarious new Kickstarter product goes down, a promo video that you will promise me you are about to watch. Seriously, promise now. Prepare to have your mind dubstepped into numbness and dumbness. This, folks, is the Comet smartphone, and it is the latest Kickstarter project that is more than likely 100% fake. I’m actually surprised that it didn’t start on Indiegogo, since you can basically rip people off unapologetically there without a need to even see funding. (And if it’s real, good for phones with fins!)

Enjoy.

Slack App Updated to Version 2.0, Includes Updated UI and Enhanced Notifications

Slack, the communications app built specifically for large teams working towards a common goal, just received a big ol’ update to version 2.0. Inside, the left and right drawers have been removed, being replaced by a more simplistic tabbed navigation UI. From these tabs, you can quickly access your channels, DM’s, starred items, and mentions from within a conversation.

Users will also see a “Jump to…” search bar, providing a point of access to whatever you are looking for inside of the app. A new UI for switching between teams has been added, as well as a refined notifications experience.

If you, your company, team, or anybody you know rocks Slack, get on it.

What’s New

  • The left and right drawers have been dropped in favor a simpler tabbed navigation. Tabs provide quick access to all your channels, direct messages, starred items, and mentions.
  • Know exactly where you want to go? Quickly “Jump to…” any channel, group, or direct message.
  • Constantly switching between teams? Simply select your team from the top dropdown and off you go.
  • A much refined notification experience, with notifications grouped by team.
  • A shiny new button floats attractively in the bottom right corner of the channels list for quickly locating or creating channels, DMs or groups.
  • Search functionality has been greatly improved with the ability to open search results in a new “archive viewer” so you can see the full context of a message result.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 Update Previewed in Video

Thanks to the folks at SamMobile, owners of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge can get a look at what to expect once Android 5.1.1 hits their device. As detailed in the video below, Samsung brings a few tweaks to users, including a new manual exposure setting inside of the camera app, a feature which was not there before. Unfortunately, it does not appear RAW support is in the build featured in this video.

For International GS6 owners, Samsung added in an A-Z app sorter, a feature that US owners do have. In addition, users can enable and disable the Parallax-like effect when selecting wallpapers for the home screen.

Currently, there is no timeframe for US models of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge to receive the Android 5.1.1 update.

Take a look at the video below, then let us know what you would like to see Samsung bring to the next build.

Motorola’s TurboPower 15 Car Charger is Quick Charge 2.0-Ready

This morning, Motorola announced a new Quick Charge 2.0 product to their line-up that helps you turbo charge on the go in your car, the TurboPower 15 Car Charger. Like their Turbo Charger, you can technically receive up to 8 hours of battery juice in just 15 minutes time with the TurboPower 15 Car Charger.

Within the last year, Motorola became one of the first phone manufacturers to dive head first into the Quick Charge 2.0 game through their Turbo Charger. All of their flagship phones from last year support quick charging, including the Moto X (2nd gen), Nexus 6, and Lollipop-less DROID Turbo. We’ve talked about how big of a deal quick charging is enough times that I’m sure you don’t need me to go through it again, right?

This little car adapter runs $29.99 and is available today and should work with Quick Charge 2.0-ready devices, not just Motorola’s line-up.

(Keep in mind that Amazon has very similar products for as little as $10.)

Samsung Posts Complete Galaxy S6 Active Specs and Manuals, Still No Announcement From AT&T

Without any official announcement from AT&T or Samsung yet, the Galaxy S6 Active is now up on Samsung’s site, just waiting for people to acknowledge it. Last night, more photos of the device hit the web, but thanks to Samsung’s website, we now have full specifications and user manuals for the phone that details everything we may want to know.

For specs, the GS6 Active features a 5.1″ Super AMOLED QHD display (same as on the Galaxy S6), an Exynos octa-core processor, 32GB of onboard memory, no expandable storage, a non-removable 2,550mAh battery, 16MP rear-facing camera (with special underwater shooting mode), and Android 5.0+ out of the box.

If you are feeling a bit active on a weekend, the device also has an Activity Zone app, capable of relaying Barometer, Weather, Compass, and S Health information, conveniently accessible via a dedicated button in the top left hand corner of the device. This Active button is also customizable in what it can perform. And yes, the phone is waterproof. According to the manual, the S6 Active is water-resistant and dustproof at an IP68 rating, relating to 1.5 meters of submersion for 30 minutes.

Again, without any word from Samsung or AT&T, we have no idea when to expect the device, or for how much. As soon as it is made official, we will let you know.

Thinking about getting an Active?

Video: Huawei P8 Lite Unboxing and First Impressions

As you now know, Huawei’s announcement for today was for the Huawei P8 Lite, their new affordable unlocked phone for the US. The phone starts at just $249 yet includes mostly solid specs (HD display, 13MP camera, octa-core Qualcomm processor, etc.). It also comes in a couple of colors and should work perfectly on AT&T and T-Mobile’s LTE networks. The total package here is quite nice for the price, but Huawei had better be ready to compete with companies like ASUS, who are also dealing unlocked phones with solid specs at low prices.

We have had a chance to kick it with the P8 Lite a couple of times now, including the unboxing you will see below. My takeaway at this point is this. You get a phone that feels great in hand, thanks to its smallish 5-inch display and premium-like design. It performs well, is capable of taking good pictures, and really is a great package at that price.

The problem here is the fact that the phone runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box. Seriously, it’s June 3 and a phone is launching without Lollipop (ignore the faux-Lollipop navigation buttons, they are a trick). We don’t know if or when this phone will be upgraded, so should you buy it, well, you might be stuck with the old for longer than you might want. That’s a serious item to take into consideration.

Below, you will find our unboxing and initial set of impressions.

You can buy the Huawei P8 Lite at Amazon today.

Huawei Announces the P8 Lite, a $249 Unlocked Phone for the US

Huawei announced a new phone today for the US, the unlocked and inexpensive Huawei P8 Lite. As the name suggests, this is a slightly trimmed down version of their flagship P8, at least in terms of appearance.

The Huawei P8 Lite is available starting today from retailers like Amazon, B&H Photo, GetHuawei.com, and Target.com for the price of $249. This is an unlocked phone, so we are talking $249 without a contract – you pay for it and it is yours. Huawei is doing a couple of innovative things around service with the P8 Lite, including a 2-year warranty with the phone and an option to finance it, even though it does run just $249.

So why buy the P8 Lite? Well, it carries pretty decent specs for a phone with that low of a price. You have a 5-inch HD (720p) display, 2GB RAM, 1.5GHz Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, 2200mAh battery, LTE connectivity on AT&T and T-Mobile, 16GB storage with micro SD support up to 32GB, and Android 4.4.4 KitKat. Yes, it runs KitKat, unfortunately. And I actually have no idea if or when this little guy will see Lollipop.

We have an unboxing and first impressions video on the way, so stay tuned for that.

As I mentioned, the phone is already available from Amazon here. (Other links:  B&H Photo | GetHuawei.com)

Huawei Brings Great Design within Reach with New Unlocked P8 lite Smartphone

New unlocked purchase benefits make P8 lite and other Huawei unlocked devices even more attractive

PLANO, Texas [June 3, 2015]: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology solutions provider, today launched the Huawei P8 lite in the U.S., making it possible for U.S. consumers to have premium design and features at an accessible price. Available for just $249.99 USD, the P8 lite will be available as an unlocked device, giving consumers the option to take their phone to the network* of their choice.

“With a perfect balance of style, functionality and value, the P8 lite gives consumers a premium yet easily accessible device and experience,” said Mr. Zhiqiang Xu, President of Huawei Device USA. “We are expanding our smartphone, wearable and tablet portfolio to meet U.S. consumers’ needs and are committed to delivering the right devices at the right prices with a tremendous consumer experience.”

Accessible Design
With design and craftsmanship inspired by the company’s premium global flagship devices, Huawei P8 lite’s ultra-slim 7.7mm profile and thin bezels make it perfectly compact and well balanced in the hand. Demonstrating sophisticated design and quality craftsmanship, the metallic appearance of the phone’s back panel is achieved through a layered design of contrasting hues and a hand-crafted satin coating that feels smooth to touch, but glimmers in direct light.

Accessible Technology
The P8 lite isn’t just beautiful— it’s also elegantly functional. The 5-inch HD Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3 display is designed for visual clarity and utmost durability. The 13 megapixel rear camera has built-in low light and autofocus capabilities which, along with the multi-frame noise reduction algorithm, ensure photos are clearer and brighter.

In addition to the solid camera performance and streamlined design, the Huawei P8 offers:

  • 5.0-inch 720p HD screen
  • Powerful Octa-core Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 615 processor
  • Ultra-fast 4G LTE connectivity with support for all US GSM LTE bands
  • Intuitive and easy-to-use Emotion UI 3.0 interface
  • 2200mAh battery with ultra-power saving mode
  • Unique photo capture options including:
    • All Focus: Change the focal point of saved images
    • Ultra Snapshot: access the camera instantly, even from sleep mode
  • 5 megapixel front-facing camera
  • Dual-SIM/SIM+Expandable MicroSD up to 32GB

Transforming the Unlocked Experience
With the launch of the P8 lite, Huawei is transforming consumers’ unlocked purchase experience. While more than 42 percent1 of consumers use or intend to purchase an unlocked device, there are still significant barriers that give consumers pause or reason to lack confidence. Among the leading roadblocks to purchasing an unlocked device are concerns about after-sales service, phone price and sales channels2. Huawei is addressing all of these concerns by introducing new benefits throughout the unlocked device purchase process.

Huawei is introducing a new two-year warranty on unlocked smartphones launched this year, including the SnapTo, introduced in April, and the all new P8 lite. Consumers need only register at GetHuawei.com to receive the warranty’s benefits for an extended term. The two-year warranty joins Huawei’s already strong commitment to post-purchase support, with local customer service, localized repair and a variety of contact channels for consumers.

Though the unlocked purchase model provides more freedom and choice, there is still an upfront cost for the device. Huawei is removing device sticker shock and giving consumers more flexible payment options by partnering with financial services leader Affirm. Now, consumers who purchase devices on www.GetHuawei.com have the option to select fixed installment plans of three, six and 12-months at the point of sale for device purchases of $99 or more. And once a purchase is made, consumers can have the confidence that it will arrive as promised and with easily accessible customer support thanks to Huawei’s partnership with trusted fulfillment provider Amazon.

“With the introduction of new unlocked benefits and with close collaboration from our valued partners, Huawei is taking the next step forward to make buying a quality unlocked device worry-free for consumers,” said Xu. “At Huawei, we are committed to not only delivering great devices at the right price, but also the services and support that let consumers purchase our products with confidence.”

Availability
P8 lite is available beginning today, June 3, through Huawei’s ecommerce site, GetHuawei.com, Amazon.com, B&H in-store and online, Fry’s Electronics in-store and online, Target.com and various dealer networks. P8 lite will also be coming soon to BestBuy.com and select Best Buy stores.

In celebration of GetHuawei.com’s one-year anniversary, consumers who are registered or register on the website between June 3 and June 6 will receive promotional incentives good for discounts on select products, including the newly launched P8 lite, Mate2 and SnapTo. For more information about the P8 lite, visit http://ift.tt/1K9ApME.

Deal: Nexus 6 Drops to $499 at Best Buy and Amazon Too

Yesterday, Google surprisingly dropped the price of their flagship Nexus 6 by $150 on the Google Store. We assumed that the deal was a temporary, short-team thing that was exclusive to the Google Store. While the price slashing may be temporary, the deal is not exclusive to Google and has already been matched at other places you should be quite familiar with – Amazon and Best Buy.

If buying the Nexus 6 from the Google Store didn’t seem all that appealing or you have Amazon or Best Buy gift cards to blow through, now is your chance. The Nexus 6 can be had for as little as $499 (32GB) at either spot. The 64GB model has also been discounted by $150 as well, dropping it to $549.

Free shipping is included at all three places, but Amazon does have Prime shipping for those who are members.
