Acer Launch The Budget Priced Acer Liquid Z410 Smartphone With 4G, DTS And 64 Bit Processor

Acer Liquid Z410 slanted

When we think of budget handsets we normally think of all the ways in which manufacturers try to cut corners. A cheaper camera, lesser speakers, slowly processor and RAM and the list goes on. However, over the last year (or so) this has begun to change. Instead of budget handsets being something a company dishes out to try and offer cheaper alternatives to their flagship devices, they are now being seen as a thriving and important market. This is largely to do with the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) who are demanding better and cheaper devices. As such this year, we saw the launch of Android One (albeit solely in India).

Since the launch of Android One and their overall cheaper handsets, other manufacturers have had to change their tact in how they viewed budget smartphones and more recently we are starting to see (and reap) the benefits of this turning of the tide. Acer is one of these companies and they have just announced the release of the Acer Liquid Z410 budget smartphone. One of the big selling points for the Liquid Z410 will be the enhanced audio (for this price point) due to the device’s front-facing speakers and built-in DTS digital audio support. That said, for the price the other specs are not too shabby either.

The Liquid Z410 will come with a 4.5” qHD display. Inside the device will be powered by a 64 bit SoC processor (possibly MediaTek MT6752). In terms of cameras, the device will come with a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing option with 80-degree wide angle lens (allowing for better selfies and groupies). Another main feature being touted by Acer is that the Liquid Z410 will come with their own signature features like AcerRAPID (customizable actions) and AcerEXTEND (ability to connect and control the smartphone remotely from a Windows-based PC). If you are wondering what the price will be for the Acer Liquid Z410 then it is expected to start selling in Europe for 129 Euros which equates to roughly $155. If this sounds like a device you might be interested in then the Liquid Z410 is expected to launch towards the end of February in select EMEA regions. What do you think? A budget device you might be interested in? Let us know

LG Promo Video Further Confirms LG G Flex 2 Will Be Released At CES

LG Flex 2_promo

Well folks, CES is very much underway now. To be clear, the event has not officially started but that doesn’t mean that it has not started. The companies are all already on the ground in Vegas, as are the main media outlets (including us) all trying to get to see what we have in store next week. Already, it seems that the news is coming in and especially if you are an LG fan.

It has long been suspected that the LG G Flex 2 would be announced at CES. For those, new to this device, the short of it, is that the Flex 2 will be a bendy device. Unlike the bendgate iPhone 6, this one will be intentionally curvy. The name alone suggests that it is an update of the previous curvy LG G Flex and that is exactly right. Other specs are limited (in terms of what we know) although it is being reported that the Flex 2 will come with the flexible P-OLED display. Like the original Flex, it is also expected the Flex 2 will come with self-healing coating. The display is expected to be a 1080p display which is an upgrade from the 720p on the Flex. It is being expected that the device will also come with 3GB RAM and either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 or 810.

Well, if you needed any proof that the LG G Flex 2 would be making an appearance at CES then this morning it was reported that a banner was present at CES which pretty much confirmed the Flex 2 was in attendance. If that is not enough to confirm it then it seems an LG press video for CES has surfaced which again pretty much confirms the Flex 2. The promo video is a general promo video and as such they Flex 2 only makes a brief appearance, but either way, it is there and further reinforces this morning’s news, as well as the general belief that the Flex 2 is imminently about to drop. You can check out the video below for yourself. Can you feel it folks? CES is here.

Android Headliner: How Can Motorola Out Do Themselves In 2015?

Motorola-AH-184

In 2014, Motorola silently had a pretty big year. Okay, maybe not that silently. But for most of the year, Motorola didn’t really announce anything or put out anything new. In the beginning of 2014 they put out the Moto E, a cheap (about $120) smartphone that’s actually pretty decent. They also announced the Moto 360, which everyone instantly fell in love with. And that was pretty much it until September.

September came along and Motorola had their event at their Headquarters in Chicago where they showed off the new Moto X and the Moto G 2014 models. They were both great phones, but that wasn’t all Motorola had up their sleeves for 2014. At that event, they also showed off the Moto Hint as well as their Power Pack Micro. Which really shows that they are into accessories as well now. And not ones that everyone has, which is nice as well. The Moto 360 sold very well, which was also made official and launched the next day at this event. We went home with the Moto G, Moto X and Moto 360, and I was smitten with them. Loved all three. In fact, I bought a Moto X and a Moto 360.

After this event in Chicago, rumors of the Nexus 6 being made by Motorola were heating up and coming fast and furious. Around mid-October, Google made it official, Motorola Nexus 6 with top of the line specs. Including a Snapdragon 805, 2560×1440 resolution display and 3GB of RAM. It’s an amazing device. But again that was not all of it. At the end of October, Motorola and Verizon announced the Droid Turbo. Which is essentially a Nexus 6 Mini. It’s such an amazing smartphone. With a huge 3900mAh battery and probably the best phone they’ve ever made.

So we have to ask, how does Motorola top 2014? What more can they do without becoming Samsung and releasing a ton of smartphones in 2015? I really don’t know. Although one thing they could do, which I know will never happen, is launching the Droid Turbo for all carriers. If they put that phone on every carrier here in the US, they’d sell a ton and pick up a huge chunk of market share. But because it’s a Verizon exclusive, that’s not going to happen, which is unfortunate. But if they put out a Moto X and a Moto X Mini in 2015, where they both have about the same specs, just different screen sizes (think Sony Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact), they’d outdo what they did in 2014. A lot of people loved the size of the Moto X, but also a lot of people think it’s way too small. And this way they’d capture a bigger market.

What do you think Motorola can do in 2015 to have an even bigger year than in 2014? Be sure to let us know in the comments below. Motorola and Lenovo are likely to read this, so let’s tell them!

The Alleged Xiaomi Mi4S Poster Shows Off A Great Looking Device With Incredibly Thin Bezels

Xiaomi Mi4S leaked render

As we wait for the announcement of the Xiaomi Redmi 1S 4G or the Redmi 2S (depending on which rumors you choose to believe) which will take place soon, we have some additional Xiaomi news to share with you. Another leaked image popped up allegedly showing off Xiaomi Mi4S, a device which is rumored to be released by Xiaomi this month. Company’s CEO, Lei Jun, announced recently that the company will release their new flagship handset this month, and most of us assumed Xiaomi will release the Mi5, but that might not be the case. Xiaomi Mi4 launched back in July, so it seems a bit early for Xiaomi to launch the Mi5, but they might compromise and release the Mi4S this month after all. There is no way we can confirm how legit this leak is, it might be just a render after, but it’s certainly interesting.

The phone in the image looks great if you ask me, so great that I truly doubt its launch is probable. The bezels are incredibly thin and to be quite honest it look more like a fan made render than a phone we’ll see launched soon. The Mi5 is rumored to sport a 5.5 or a 5.7-inch QuadHD display, 3GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 810 SoC and a 20.7-megapixel camera, but we didn’t get any leaks when it comes to the Mi4S though. The leaked poster which you can see above this article, not only shows the alleged Xiaomi Mi4S handset, but it also says that the device will sport a faster processor, better display and the most powerful camera in the world. Sounds fake? Yeah, we think so as well, but anything is possible. Either way you look at it, we’ll see a new Xiaomi flagship launched this month, the only question is, will it be the Mi4S or the Mi5. Also, keep in mind that Xiaomi won’t launch this thing on CES, the company has confirmed that they won’t be attending that tech event in Las Vegas, so… we won’t be seeing anything Xiaomi-related launched there for sure.

Do you like the leaked render and do you believe this is the Mi4S handset? I personally don’t think so even though I’d like for it to happen, but the leak just seems… well, a bit off.

All but Official: LG to announce the G Flex 2 at CES this week

lg-g-flex-2-verge

We’ve been hearing rumors for a good few weeks that LG would be announcing the LG G Flex 2 at CES this week. And quite a few people are already at CES in Las Vegas, and The Verge has gotten their eyes on a LG banner that pretty much confirms the LG G Flex 2 which states “Redefining the Curve”. Last year, LG announced the LG G Flex for the US here at CES, and it looks like this is where the successor will be announced. The LG G Flex 2 is expected to run on a Snapdragon 805 or 810 (depending on whether Qualcomm has the Snapdragon 810 ready yet) as well as 3GB of RAM and at least a 1080p display. I’m saying a 1080p display because last year the LG G Flex had a 720p display, so I don’t think it’ll jump straight to QHD.

The name is also basically official as well. If you take a look at the full picture over on The Verge’s post (linked in the sources section below), you’ll see that it says the LG G Flex 2.

As far as the design of the LG G Flex 2 goes, we’re expecting it to be pretty much the same as the LG G3, so we’ll probably see a faux metal design (which is really plastic), and super thin bezels. Not to mention it flexes, which is pretty sweet. I’m especially excited to see how well the self-healing coating on the back has improved over last year. It healed scratches and such on the LG G Flex, but it wasn’t perfect, and this is something that I think could be a big selling point for LG here.

LG’s press conference is first thing Monday morning (at 8am PST), and we’ll be there to see what LG has to show us. We’re definitely excited to see what LG has to show off at CES this week. How many of you are also excited?

Featured Review: Sony Smartwatch 3

Sony Smartwatch 3 AH-14

Sony isn’t particularly new to smartwatches, which is why this is the known as the Smartwatch 3 from Sony. They have done two smartwatches prior to this, but they weren’t running Android. In fact, they were running Sony’s own OS which was made to look like Android running on a Sony smartphone. When Android Wear was announced earlier this year, Sony said they’d stick with their own software and not jump to Android Wear. But at IFA in September, they announced the Smartwatch 3 with Android Wear. Which made a lot of us Sony fans ecstatic. Even though it’s not the best looking watch out right now. You could say the best looking ones include the Moto 360, and ASUS Zenwatch.

Spec wise, the Sony Smartwatch 3 is almost exactly the same as every other smartwatch out there. So in this review, we’ll be focusing more on the software (even though that’s mostly the same, but it is running Android Wear 5.0 now), as well as the build quality the beauty of this smartwatch. It won’t be a super long review, so let’s get this one going.

Editor’s Note: We’ve been using the Sony Smartwatch 3 for about 2 and a half weeks now. It’s been paired to the Motorola Moto X (2014), the Meizu MX4 and the Google Nexus 6. So this review will reflect that.

Hardware

Sony Smartwatch 3 AH-8

Even though the specs are identical, we’re still going to include them in the review. The Sony Smartwatch 3 has a quad-core 1.2GHz processor, yes it’s the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor as the LG G Watch, G Watch R, Samsung Gear Live, and ASUS Zenwatch. There’s also a 320×320 transreflective display that measures about 1.6-inches diagonally. 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, and a 420mAh battery. Which we’ll talk more about the battery life a bit later. The size of the watch is what a lot of people ask about, and I don’t think it’s too bad. Comparing to the LG G Watch, it’s about the same size, and it’s a bit smaller than the LG G Watch R. But that is kinda comparing apples and oranges there.

Sony Smartwatch 3 AH-5

The first thing a lot of us thought when Sony announced the Smartwatch 3 was that it was ugly. Which in the press images, it does look pretty ugly. But in person, I think it looks better, but not as good as the LG G Watch R, Moto 360 or the ASUS Zenwatch. But what the Smartwatch 3 lacks in beauty, it makes up for in features. Along with all the standard Android Wear features, the Smartwatch 3 also has GPS and WiFi built in. Now I haven’t had a chance to use the GPS since it just got turned on in Android Wear 5.0, and I haven’t found any apps that uses the watch’s GPS instead of my phone’s GPS. But that is there. Which means you can go for a run with Runtastic and leave your phone at home. And if you have the Nexus 6, that’s a great thing.

Sony-Smartwatch-3-Review-AH-7

It’s hard to find something to not like about the Smartwatch 3 here, but there is one thing I want to complain about, and that’s the display. There’s actually two things with the display here. It looks a bit washed out to me, especially after coming from using the LG G Watch R and Moto 360 for the past 3-4 months. But compared to the LG G Watch, it’s not too bad. So I could probably let it go. My other complaint is the “Always-On Display”. While it is actually always on, you can’t always see it. It goes into a sort of e-paper mode. Where it’s very, very dim, and almost unviewable when not indoors. For me, that makes the feature useless. I wasn’t able to find any type of setting to change that either, so I’m thinking that might be by design, and probably to save a bit more battery life.

Battery Life

2015-01-02 00.31.24

Speaking of battery life, it’s pretty darn good. Typically, I take it off the charger around 9-9:30am, and use it all day long with hundreds of notifications, messages, and emails coming in all day long, and set it on the charger at around 12-midnight. Usually when I set it down to charge, it has about 60% left. Now I did use the Smartwatch 3 when I flew to Beijing last week. It was off the charger for 17 hours, and under some pretty heavy use, and did not die, it had about 15% left when I got to my hotel. Although I was unable to get a screenshot of that battery life. You can typically get just shy of two full days of battery out of the Smartwatch 3, which is pretty good, but I’d rather get through two full days and have a little bit of juice left, in case you use your watch heavier one day over the other.

This is something we talk about with just about every smartwatch that comes across our desk, and that’s the charging mechanism. I still think Motorola hit it on the head with the wireless charging they put in the Moto 360. While LG and Samsung both use cradles. Sony has a micro USB port on the back of the watch. And in typical sony fashion, there is a flap there, which is a bit difficult to get too. I usually end up taking the watch out of the strap and plugging it up to charge.

So it’s clear that OEMs aren’t too sure yet what the best way to charge these smartwatches are yet. But we’re getting closer, I hope.

Software

Sony-Smartwatch-3-Review-AH-9

So this section will be a bit longer than normal. The last Android Wear review we did was on the LG G Watch R, which had Android 4.4W2 at the time. But now we have Android 5.0 on Wear, and it’s a pretty big update, so let’s get to it.

Starting with the Android Wear app on your phone, you are able to change watchfaces, as well as set default apps for different actions, At the very bottom is a button where you can view other Android Wear compatible apps in the Play Store. If you tap on the gear icon at the top, you can view the watch’s battery life, and it’s storage, as well as a few other settings as well. Which the battery life screen is a big update to me for Android Wear. It makes writing this review much easier as I can back up my battery life section with hardcore numbers. Using the overflow button you can pair a new wearable, disconnect or forget the Smartwatch 3, as well as view the demo cards and a tutorial of Android Wear.

Screenshot 2015-01-01 19.48.06

Now on the actual watch, if you pull down from the top, you can mute the notifications on your watch, Change it no interruptions or priority only. Now that’s only on Lollipop devices, on those prior to Lollipop, you can only mute the notifications. Swipe over and you can get to Theater Mode, which will turn down the display and mute notifications. It’s called Theater mode as it’s intended use is when you’re at the movies. As you don’t want that screen coming on in the middle of the movies. Swipe over again and you can jump into settings.

2015-01-02 00.31.10

One thing that I did notice with the Smartwatch 3 running on Android Wear 5.0, is the fact that you are unable to take a screenshot through the Android Wear app. This is a bit puzzling. And it’s not the phone’s fault, as connecting both the LG G Watch and LG G Watch R allow you to get a screenshot, but not the Sony Smartwatch 3, as you can see in the screenshot above.

Other than that everything is basically, functionally, the same. There’s a few UI tweaks compared to 4.4W2 though. One other thing is the fact that you can bring back cards you dismissed. So when you swipe away a card, if you swipe back up, for about 5-10 seconds you can undo the dismissal and bring back that card. Which I think is a pretty important feature here.

Final Thoughts

Sony-Smartwatch-3-Review-AH-1

The Sony Smartwatch 3 is a great smartwatch, but is it the best smartwatch? I’m not even sure that exists, as everyone has their own tastes and likes/dislikes, etc. But if you are a Sony fan, then you’re probably going to like this watch. If you don’t like the silicon band, and want to change it, you may want to look elsewhere as you can only use Sony’s bands unfortunately. Hopefully that changes in the future with the Smartwatch 4 which we’ll probably see really soon. I did actually really like the Sony Smartwatch 3 after I got used to the square display, although I still prefer the circular display. I can’t wait to see what kind of smartwatches we get in 2015 though.

Unofficial Android 5.0 (Lollipop) For Samsung Galaxy S2 Stable Enough To Install – Links Included

If you own a Google Nexus, LG, Samsung or pretty much any android device then all the recent news and talk is probably to do with Android 5.0 (Lollipop). It seems consumers and manufacturers are all so preoccupied with getting Lollipop out to their devices as soon as possible. That said, if your device is a couple of years old then you are probably sitting there quietly and patiently not asking too many questions. This is because most of the manufacturers tend to end their support for older devices and as such there is no guarantee as to when (or even if) you will get the latest android system to your device. If you are a Samsung older device owner then you might even be more worried if you read the recent news that CyanogenMod (CM) are struggling to get Lollipop working on older devices due to issues with PIE.

In particular, one device which was noted as providing a real problem was the Samsung Galaxy S2. Now, most owners of newer devices are probably thinking ‘who cares about the S2’. However, the i9100 (as it is more formally known) is still quite a popular device and especially within the rooting community. It was after all, the real iPhone competition device and as such paved the way for the newer Galaxy S phones, which we are always talking about. Well, if you are an S2 owner and worried that you might not get Lollipop then you should worry a little less as there is always unofficial CM ports. In fact, one of those ports on XDA as just reached a stable level. Although it is being considered ‘stable’ it is worth noting that it does still have a couple of bugs (namely HD recording and internal storage) and is also an unofficial version of CM12. That said, if you want the taste of Lollipop on the Samsung Galaxy S2 this certainly might be the best option to try.

By now (and if you are going to try doing this) you should know what to do. But just in case, you need to download both the Lollipop image and Gapps from the XDA thread. You should also have a custom recovery already installed. After this, boot into recovery and make a backup. Save the backup (not on your internal memory) and then go back into recovery. From here, find the image you downloaded and flash. Go back into recovery and flash Gapps. Following this, reboot and be prepared to wait during the first boot up. After which (hopefully) you are looking at Lollipop on your device. So, any S2 owners out there? Going to give this a try?

Meizu Explains Why The M1 Note Will Cost More If You Buy It In Physical Stores Or Via Resellers

Meizu M1 Note AH-33

Meizu announced three great smartphones last year, the MX4, MX4 Pro and the M1 Note handsets. The first two are both announced as companies flagship handsets which are well-built and yet rather affordable, while the latter one was announced quite recently as the device for “young people” and it is incredibly affordable. This device technically belongs in a mid-range category, though it is placed somewhere in between mid and high-end device thanks to its great spec sheet. This handset costs only 999 Yuan (16GB version) in China, which is a bargain, but we’re talking about buying online here, the device will be somewhat more expensive if you buy it in a Meizu store for example.

The company actually wanted to clear things up by explaining why that is. Meizu has explained via company’s official Weibo account that they cannot avoid raising the price for the device when bought in physical stores because of the labour, utilities and the cost of rent. Other manufacturers, like Xiaomi and Huawei, actually have the same business strategy, so this was to be expected. The device is already available for purchase via Oppomart and this definitely explains a somewhat higher price attached to this device, if you buy it via that reseller, the device will cost you $249 (16GB version). It’s a significantly higher price, though still really affordable considering what this handset has to offer. Also, keep in mind that we’re talking about a reseller which ships worldwide, the price in physical stores in China is expected to be somewhat lower than this.

Meizu wanted to make some things clear, in order to make you feel safe when you buy their devices, no matter where you purchase them. The company said you’ll get the same device, offering the same quality, never mind where you buy it, whether we’re talking about a purchase straight from Meizu or via the reseller for example. They also said that all devices have the same national warranty policy of Meizu which also implements the National Three-Warranty Policy. Meizu also promised that they’ll do their best to increase the supply of these devices by enhancing their production capacity. If you’re interested in checking out the specs of the M1 Note, follow this link.

Xolo’s Play 8X-1020 Goes Live With A Knocked Down MT6592M SoC For 9,999 INR In India

Xolo-8X-1020

Xolo has made another one of its octa-core phones official in India. The 8X-1020, as it’s known as, is priced at 9,999 INR ($158) and finds itself in the popular Play series of budget Xolo phones. With phones such as the Yu Yureka targeting the online market, Xolo will be eyeing the sort-of discarded offline market in India with phones such as the Play 8X-1020.

Since there’ll be middlemen involved in the supply chain of this new phone, it doesn’t really appeal as much as other online-only launches that India has seen. However, what one has to realize is that a major share of sales is still carried out offline in India. The Play 8X-1020 comes with a 5-inch 1280 x 720p HD display, and packs the octa-core MediaTek MT6592m CPU that operates at 1.4GHz. The MT6592m is the knocked-down version of the first MediaTek octa-core chip, the MT6592 which runs at 1.7GHz throughout its eight cores. Along with the mid-range SoC, Xolo have given the Play 8X-1020 1GB of RAM which does fall second to the Yu Yureka which will be seen as a prime contender (but it’s online only).

Besides that, there’s 8GB of on-board storage, which will of course be expandable via microSD. The phone also packs an 8 mega-pixel rear camera, which according to Xolo comes from Sony’s facilities — the Exmor R. Since people really care about selfies these days, the Play 8X-1020 comes with a 5-megapixel front snapper in order to satisfy the hunger for exactly that. There’s no 4G LTE, and there’s a 2,500mAh battery to power the internals that doesn’t sound too bad.

Like many phones, the device will most likely be sold at a price lower than the suggested MRP (Maximum Retail Price) by Xolo. In this case, the device has been priced at 9,999 INR ($158), but it will most likely be sold at 9,700 INR ($155) and lower, in domestic offline markets in India. Are you a citizen of India? If yes, do you still prefer purchasing a phone offline (and paying a premium for that) over ordering online? Do let us know in the comments section below.

AH Primetime: Top 10 Ways the Mobile Industry Will Change in 2015

Mobile-2015-AH-1

One could argue that in 2014, the mobile industry changed a lot. Not just in smartphones, tablets and wearables, but also in the carrier world. We saw T-Mobile and Sprint really up their game and get serious about competing with the big two, AT&T and Verizon. But what about 2015? What’s in store next year for the Mobile industry? Well that’s what we are taking a look at today.

More than just Smartphones and Tablets

Sony Smartwatch 3 AH-15

For a while, carriers were mostly only selling smartphones, and in 2014 we saw more tablets on sale at carriers. Heck, Verizon added about a million tablets last quarter alone, which is double their smartphone additions. But now we’re going to see wearables on sale at carriers (more on wearables in a minute). That started with the Galaxy Gear last year, and continued with the Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo, Gear Fit, Gear S, LG G Watch and the Moto 360. We’re also seeing this with cars. Some manufacturers have contracts with carriers for 4G LTE, including Chevy working with AT&T. And this is where carriers are going to continue to add customers to their growing numbers.

Better Wearables

Samsung-Gear-Live-1

Not that the current crop of wearables are bad or anything, but they are still sort of first-generation products. We had wearables in 2013 from the likes of Fitbit, Jawbone, Samsung and Sony, but in 2014 a lot of other players joined in. Including Google with Android Wear. In 2015, I believe we’ll see the wearable scene get even larger, and hopefully better wearables. We have some great smartwatches out there already, like the Moto 360, and the ASUS Zenwatch, in 2015, I think we’ll see more, with more features, and possibly lower prices.

The Battle for #3 in the US

Sprint-Logo-AH-4

In the second half of 2014, Sprint and T-Mobile have really picked up their competitive spirits. Sprint changed their CEO, and lowered prices pretty quickly, mostly to compete with T-Mobile, but that’s helped them keep customers, and add some new ones. T-Mobile had vowed that they’d take the #3 spot from Sprint by the end of 2014. That could still happen, but it won’t be a huge lead. Which means the battle continues. It’s going to be really interesting to see what these two carriers do in 2015, and how it affects the duopoly of AT&T and Verizon.

More wireless carrier competition

Verizon-Logo-AH-112014-2

In 2014 we saw something we haven’t seen in a while. AT&T and Verizon actually competing with T-Mobile and Sprint. For the longest time, AT&T and Verizon haven’t needed to compete because their networks were amazing, and people were willing to pay that price for their network. But with more and more people leaving for T-Mobile or Sprint’s lower prices and improving networks, AT&T and Verizon have had to actually compete with the smaller carriers, and lower prices. This is good for all consumers, but even better for those working at T-Mobile and Sprint. And I fully expect this to continue into 2015.

Carrier Acquisitions

While we won’t see AT&T buy T-Mobile or Sprint, or Sprint buying T-Mobile or AT&T, what we will likely see is these big four carriers buying up other regional carriers. This year, AT&T bought Cricket Wireless and merged it with their Aio prepaid wireless provider, to make a pretty decent prepaid provider here. So we’ll likely see more of that in 2015. As the FCC obviously wants at least 4 major carriers here in the US.

Moar Android Auto and Android TV

Nexus-Player-Review-AH-4

At Google I/O this past summer, Google introduced to us Android Auto as well as Android TV. We were all excited about them both, because they’ve been a long time coming. We’ve already gotten Android TV in the form of the Nexus Player. Which is still in the early stages of Android TV, and could use some help. In 2015, I’m expecting a lot more Android TV boxes, as well as TV’s with Android built in. Which probably isn’t that far off.

And when it comes to the car, I’m expecting to see some cars at the North American International Auto Show in a few weeks here in Detroit to have Android Auto built in. Which would be amazing. There’s a bunch of car makers that are part of Google’s automotive alliance for Android Auto, and I can’t wait to see how well it works in a real car, instead of those mockups that Google had at Google I/O.

More VoLTE

verizon volte lte

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all have VoLTE running in some capacity on their network now. No word from Sprint yet. But I fully expect this to expand in 2015, and to expand quickly. Most carriers aren’t investing in their voice network anymore, and I don’t blame them since they want to move everything over to their data network and have calls go in over data. Which Google has already given to all of us that use Google Voice (and it works pretty well) but for those that use a regular phone number, VoLTE should be much more mainstream by this time next year.

Android One

micromax-canvas-a1-android-one-logo

Sundar Pichai announced Android One back at Google I/O this year, and it really put a lot of smiles on our faces. Basically it’s bringing really cheap, but good, smartphones to those in other countries, like India, with stock Android. They partnered with Indian OEM’s like Micromax and Karbonn for the first few and they did pretty well. Once those were made available and sold out almost instantly, a bunch of other OEMs started jumping on the Android One bandwagon, and we heard that it’ll expand into more countries in 2015. So look out for that.

Less Tablets

Sony-Xperia-Z2-Tablet-Verizon-AH-15

Tablets aren’t doing well, unless it’s named the iPad. But this isn’t really a surprise. Part of the issue is the software. Apple has really worked hard to get some great tablet apps available for the iPad and added some nice software features as well. While using a tablet on Android is kind of just like using a bigger smartphone. And if you already have a 6-inch phone, what’s the point in a tablet? This is a major reason why tablet makers aren’t selling many tablets these days. So one of two things is going to happen in 2015. Either we see Google really step up in making Android more tablet friendly as well as getting more apps tablet friendly, or we’ll see tablet makers making less tablets, and more smartphones or wearables in 2015.

Changes from Samsung

Samsung-Galaxy-Note-Edge-AH-29

While I tried to stay away from mentioning particular manufacturers, I think this one is important. In 2014, Samsung saw some drops in their profit. Albeit they are still making money hand over fist. But they are seeing competition from Chinese OEMs like Meizu, Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE and others. Most of which aren’t popular in the US, but they are popular in Europe, which is a big market for Samsung, similar to China and North America. I had a chance to play with Meizu’s MX4, MX4 Pro and M1 Note, and now I can really see why Meizu is really taking a bite out of Samsung’s pie in China and even in Europe.

Samsung has already made some big changes in their personnel, moving people around and such. They’ve also said that the Galaxy S6 is going to be a complete overhaul from the Galaxy S5. Which I think is needed. As we’ve basically had the same look on Samsung phones since the Galaxy S3 in 2012. Then there’s also this. It looks like the Lollipop update on the Galaxy Note 4 actually fixed a lot of our issues with Touchwiz, and I love that!

New Android-Powered Nokia C1 Renders Leak Along With Phone’s Alleged Spec Sheet

AH NOKia Logo 1.0

Nokia, what’s left of it that is, surprised everyone by announcing an Android-powered Nokia N1 tablet back in November. Why was this surprising? Well, I believe you all know by now that Nokia’s Devices and Services department was acquired by Microsoft, which left this Finnish company in ruins basically. The vast majority of the company is now Microsoft-owned, but what’s left of it is trying to make their mark out in the market. Nokia is technically not allowed to manufacture devices until 2016, as per their contract with Microsoft, but they found a way to avoid that rule. Nokia N1 wasn’t manufactured by Nokia, Foxconn did that for them.

We’re not here to talk about the N1 though, even though it’s a great tablet and it seems it will be an extremely affordable one as well. We’ve seen a leak / rumor of a Nokia-made Android-powered smartphone last month, the Nokia C1. The image of the phone was rather poor in quality and we weren’t able to see it as we should, though we did get some alleged specs along with that leak. Previous spec leak said that the device will sport a 5-inch 720p display along with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. 8-megapixel rear-facing and 5-megapixel front-facing cameras were also mentioned, as well as Android Lollipop and Nokia’s Z Launcher.

Today we have some new information regarding this device, a new image leaked along with a set of specifications which are completely different than the previously leaked specs though. As you can see in the images down below, this device sports a rather non-intrusive design and is running Nokia’s Z Launcher, much like the N1. According to the leaked specifications, this device will feature a 5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) along with 3GB of RAM and 32, 64 or 128GB of internal storage, depending on the version you decide to purchase. 20.1 and 5-megapixel camera are mentioned this time around and the leak says the device will be powered by Intel’s quad-core chip clocked at 2.8GHz. 3,100mAh battery is mentioned along with Android Lollipop and Nokia’s Z Launcher. The leak also mentions that there will be a Windows Phone version of this device which will sport basically the same specs, except for the RAM count, that device is expected to rock 2GB of RAM, instead of 3GB which will reportedly be included in the Android version of the device.

There you have it. I don’t know what to believe anymore quite frankly, there are vast differences in these two leaks and I guess the spec sheet is anyone’s guess at the moment. What do you think, will this phone become a reality and how will its spec sheet look like?

NYNE Multimedia Introducing Three New Water Resistant Bluetooth Speakers At CES 2015

NYNE Aqua

NYNE, a company that specializes in making some pretty great Bluetooth speakers that are perfect for traveling to places where they might get wet, thanks to the water resistant technology built in, has announced that they’ll be showing off three new water resistant Bluetooth speakers at the upcoming CES trade show called the Edge, Verge, and Rock,(all pictured below)all having varied sizes of portability. If you have an active lifestyle and the need for a Bluetooth speaker that is just as active as you, either of these three new speakers just might be what you’re looking for.

Both the Edge and the Verge speakers were designed with active cyclists in mind. If you ride a bike to work or school or get your exercise in through cycling, each of these speakers has the capability to be mounted to the handle bars so you don’t have to worry about stuffing it in your bag, and since it’s mounted right in front of you, you have easy access to the controls for volume and track management. Both speakers are also equipped with a handy LED light with an included strobe setting to act as a front mounted bike light for later night rides when it’s already dark.

As for the third speaker that NYNE is launching, the Rock, this speaker is significantly bigger and meant for house parties, beach parties, camping trips, or anywhere else that life takes you. The Rock features a rechargeable battery inside and carries a 50-watt power rating, but it also has two tweeters and an active woofer for bass pumping sound. It’s also got a carrying handle to make it easy to transport, and all three speakers are IPX rated for water resistance. The Edge, Verge, and Rock all work off of Bluetooth 4.0 technology with built-in NFC for easy tap-to-pair capabilities, as well as a mic for hands free calls, a 3.5mm aux input, and a 12-hour battery life which will work nicely alongside the built in USB power bank to charge your smartphone or other mobile device while you listen to music. The NYNE Edge will cost $159.95, while it’s smaller sibling will cost $119.95, and the big boy, The Rock speaker, will set you back $299.95 if you really need some sound. All three speakers are expected to launch in the second quarter of 2015.
