Report: Galaxy S7 Announcement Pushed to January, Launch in Early February

The Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are still relatively new, having launched in April, but already there are reports of when we should expect to see Samsung’s next flagship device, the Galaxy S7.

Being worked on under the codename Project Lucky (since 7 is usually associated with luck), no exact reason has been specified from sources as to why Samsung intends to launch the device so early. However, it seems easy to deduce Samsung’s need to get ahead of any competition in the early part of 2016. If Samsung is able to announce the device in late January, then launch just a couple of weeks later, it allows them to keep the hype machine moving forward smoothly.

According to SamMobile, Samsung may go back to Qualcomm for one model of the Galaxy S7, with a prototype being tested featuring a Snapdragon 820 processor, and another featuring an Exynos octa-core processor. This year, Samsung gave us two devices, the Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6, both being powered by Exynos silicon. We don’t yet know what to expect in 2016 with regard to how many models Samsung will launch.

If this rumor pans out, and we are only about 4-5 months from another Galaxy flagship device, you can rest assured more information will make its way out soon enough.

Anything you would like to see in the Galaxy S7? MicroSD? Removable battery?

Google Voice Search for Android and iOS Becomes Better, Faster, Stronger

Google announced today that users of voice search on both Android and iOS, including voice dictation on Android, will be greeted by a better, more accurate engine.

Google states that they have built even better neural network acoustic models using Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) and sequence discriminative training techniques. To us regular folk who are not engineers, whenever you perform a voice search on Android, your results will be more reliable.

Thanks to Google’s work, the new models will provide more accurate results, are more robust to noise, and will provide faster response times to voice search queries. These changes are now available to users of the service, so the only thing you need to do is try it out. Google does the heavy lifting.

Inside Google’s blog post announcing these changes, they speak of exactly how they made this possible. For those curious about sound waves and audio technology, give it a read.

Telus Says Google is Releasing Android 6.0 Marshmallow on October 5

According to Canadian wireless carrier Telus, Google will begin pushing the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update on October 5 to the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6. If that’s the case, that’s probably also a good launch time frame for the new Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Google likes to ship new versions of its Android OS on its new phones. Also, October 5 has been mentioned to us by sources who are expecting “things” to kick off.

The information on the 6.0 update comes via Telus’ support area, but does show in a post that is 3 months old. Canadian blog MobileSyrup, who discovered the post, says it has been updated recently, so we’ll have take their word for it.

Can Google push out a public release of Marshmallow a week after it’s made official? Hope so.

Samsung’s New, Lighter Gear VR Headset Priced at $99 and Includes Netflix Support

Set to ship this upcoming November, Samsung’s latest consumer-ready version of Gear VR will be priced at just $99, bringing a gang of new features for folks obsessed with virtual reality.

For starters, Samsung is teaming up with a big list on content providers to immerse you in a ton of fun stuff. This list of providers includes Netflix, Hulu, Facebook, Vimeo, and Twitch. That’s right, you can watch House of Cards in virtual reality. The future awaits!

The new hardware is listed as being 22% lighter, making it more portable and easier on the neck. On top of a decreased weight, a newly designed foam padding should make the headset more comfortable to wear. The Gear VR is listed as being compatible with Samsung’s latest lineup, which includes the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, S6 and S6 edge.

I have played with Gear VR a bit, and my only real beef was with the motion sickness effect I felt. Each person’s body can handle this experience differently, so for those of you who don’t get motion sickness easily, and own a compatible device, the $99 price tag is certainly persuasive.

Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P Show Up in Benchmarks to Further the Specs Conversation

The Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P should arrive next week at a Google event. As of now, there are still some surprises, even though press renders have leaked and we told you the names. We still don’t know pricing, date of availability, or the full specs list of each, outside of the minimal list for the 5X that Amazon provided. Thanks to benchmarks that surfaced for each phone over at Geekbench, those last few surprises are starting to dwindle.

Benchmarks for the Huawei “angler” and LG “bullhead” showed up this week along with a couple expected mentions of specs. Confused at those names? Just remember, these names were first introduced to us as potential Nexus phones all the way back in May and seem to be the real deal. The “angler” is the Huawei Nexus 6P and the “bullhead” is the LG Nexus 5X.

As for what the benchmarks say, and assuming they are the real deal, the LG “bullhead” does indeed have a 6-core Qualcomm processor and 2GB RAM, which is exactly the information Amazon posted. That 6-core chipset is the Snapdragon 808, the same found in the Moto X Pure Edition and LG G4. The Huawei “angler” has an 8-core Qualcomm chipset, which has to be the rumored Snapdragon 810. Qualcomm doesn’t have another high-end readily available octa-core chip at the moment. This benchmark also shows 3GB RAM.

Of course, both phones are shown as running Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

In semi-related news, the Huawei “angler” showed up at GFXBench just over a week ago with more detailed specs, like a 5.7-inch QHD (2560×1440) display, Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB RAM, 24GB storage (which means full capacity is 32GB), 11MP and 7MP cameras (could mean 12MP rear and 8MP front).

You guys know me and that I’m leaning towards the LG Nexus 5X because of size, but what about you?

Thursday Poll: Most Excited for – Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Android 6.0, New Chromecast?

Next Tuesday, Google is hosting an event in San Francisco that will more than likely be a showcase for the launch of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, two Nexus phones, and a new Chromecast. We’ll be there to get you the latest on whatever it is they do show off, but as we approach, because we like doing these types of things, we want to ask which (rumored) part of the event has you the most excited.

Do you care the most about the new Nexus phones, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P? If so, which one in particular? Are you ready to swap out your couple-of-year-old Chromecast for new, more powerful and flexible hardware? Or maybe you just want Android 6.0 to become official, so that you can start the countdown to when your current phone will get it?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.
