HTC One (M9) compared to One (M7), One (M8) in hands on video

htc_one_m9_hands_on_leak_022815

This is definitely not what HTC wanted to happen the day before its MWC 2015 event. A press member with early access to the device posted a hands on video with the One (M9) being compared to its predecessors. The video does not show or reveal anything we have not heard already; therefore, all it is really good for is seeing the One (M9) in a few more angles.

Sony Xperia Z Range Looks Set To Receive Android 5.0 Lollipop After Re-Addition Of Lollipop On Sony Support Pages

nexusae0_12_1-_Xperia_ZR_Colour_Range

Many mid-range handsets offer customers most of the features and benefits of their high-end cousins but cost considerably less. The reason for the lower price is because the mid-range device has one or more compromises compared with the high-end model. It may offer a lower resolution screen or a slower, older chipset. It may also have a lesser camera suite. In the case of the Sony Xperia ZR, this 2013 handset is the mid-range companion model to the flagship Xperia Z. Whereas the Xperia Z has a 1080p 5.0-inch display, the Xperia ZR offers a 4.5-inch, 720p resolution display. Both devices have the same 1.5 GHz, quad core, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro backed up by 2 GB of internal memory although the ZR offers half the storage compared with the Xperia Z at 8 GB. One other compromise associated with mid-range devices is that, traditionally, they have not received as many software updates. It also stands to reason that if a mid-range device is scheduled to receive a given update, the higher models of the range will be receiving it too.

Back in October 2014, Sony added Android 5.0 Lollipop as the next major Android version due for the Xperia ZR, along with all of the Xperia Z devices. Unfortunately for Sony customers, this graphic was pulled shortly thereafter. In January, Sony tweeted that they would be bringing Android 5.0 Lollipop to the complete Xperia Z range but starting in February 2015. And now the graphic has reappeared showing that Android 5.0 Lollipop is now back on the Xperia ZR menu. Does this mean that an update is imminent?

Android 5.0 Lollipop brings with it a number of important changes, including the adoption of the Material Design user interface with closely integrates Android applications with the operating system. There are performance and battery life improvements too: Lollipop uses a different application architecture called ART (Android RunTime), which reduces the time it takes for applications to load. Another change implemented is a network activity scheduler, designed to reduce the number of times the device wakes up in order to connect with the Internet.

Unfortunately after the tweet back in January, Sony have been keeping quiet on the matter. As such it is not clear when the update is due, but at least optimistic can remain seeing the change in the software update pages means it is coming. If and when the Xperia ZR receives the update will be great news for the rest of the Xperia Z range.

New Android Wear-powered Huawei Watch shown off in two promo videos

Huawei's Slick Android Wear Smartwatch Leaked Ahead Of MWC In The Most Pretentious Smartphone Accessory Video Ever

watch Watch the video below. Watch it several times if you need to. Try to figure out what it's trying to promote. A remote and exclusive European ski resort? An auction house for classic Mercedes cars? Champagne intended only for use in questionably phallic gestures? Nope, it's Huawei's Watch. That's not a typo, it's actually called the Huawei Watch. Let's... um, watch.

The design of the Android Wear device looks more or less like the Moto 360, with its metal housing and thin bezels but without its signature "flat tire" screen cutout.

New Images Surface Reported To Be Taken With The HTC One M9

MWC is fast approaching, which to most people will means Samsung and HTC’s events are fast approaching. These two companies seem to be what all the MWC talk is about recently. However, that is not too surprising with both expected to release their highly anticipated flagship devices. In terms of HTC, this means the follow up in their ‘One’ series, which is presumed to be aptly named the HTC One M9. For some time now, leaks, renders and images have been doing the rounds on an almost daily basis. In fact, only this morning, the latest leaked video made its way online which seemed to show the HTC One M9 in a hands-on post alongside and compared to the previous incarnations, the HTC One M8 and M7. Of course, the validity of the device in the video is debatable although it does seem to resemble what has been seen in previous leaks and renders so far.

This is, however, not the first time we have seen the supposed HTC One M9 in leaked video mode. A few days back, known tipster @upleaks went and posted what very much seemed to be three promo videos for the One M9. The first video was a brief introduction video while the second video was based around the new ‘themes’ features expected to be included on the latest device. The last video was designed to highlight the new camera that is rumored to be in play on the One M9. To recap, it is reported the One M9 will come powered with a 20 megapixel sensor.

Speaking of which, it now seems some images have also made their way online and are being reported to have been taken with the One M9’s new cameras. Again, there is pretty much no way to confirm the legitimacy of the images, although they do look to be promotional type images and as such could be used to promote the camera in the future. Either way, you can check out the images for yourself and decide on whether you think they are shot with the One M9’s new 20MP rear shooter and rumored 4MP front facing option. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Samsung Release New Teaser Video Ahead Of MWC Highlighting Anticipation of “The Next Galaxy”

Samsung-AH-0018

Over the past days and weeks, there has been an almost endless stream of Samsung Galaxy S6 news. It is pretty much taken for granted that tomorrow at MWC in Barcelona, Samsung will unveil their latest flagship device, the Samsung Galaxy S6. It is also now pretty much expected that the will also be unveiling a counterpart S6 device, which is currently being dubbed the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. Both devices are reported to be built from the ground up and as such will be a step away from their predecessors in many respects. Of course, how far that step away really is, is still unclear. Interestingly, a new video was doing the rounds yesterday which claimed to be showing both the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. Not to mention, also revealing a number of specs that the video makers claim to be confirmed.

Speaking of which, the rumor mill on the S6 (and Edge) has been insane since the start of this year with new rumors seemingly appearing almost every day. It seems this endless pre-MWC rumor cycle has gotten quite a few Samsung users hot under the collar. As a result (and in true promotional style) Samsung have put together a neat little video showcasing a number of tweets they have seen, regarding the rumors surrounding the S6 and S Edge devices. The video, unfortunately, does not give much away in terms of what to expect, but is certainly designed to further fuel anticipation before the big launch tomorrow. You can check out the video for yourself below.

In terms of tomorrow, if you are planning on watching the big unveil as it happens, then you will need to know that Samsung have already made the YouTube stream event page live on their channel. This will be the place to watch the event, so bookmark this page. In terms of when, you will need to be tuned in from 6.30pm Barcelona time. For everyone else, that means 5.30pm GMT time. For those in the U.S., you will be looking at 12.30pm for everyone on the East Coast (ET) and 9.30am for everyone more West Coast based (PT). Until then though, check out the video below and see if any of your tweets were mentioned.

Kwikset Kevo’s Android Companion App Supporting Android 5.0 And Up Leaves Beta

Kwikset Kevo

With all the advancement in smart home technology and connected devices, it was only a matter of time before we started to see things around the home like door locks get smarter too. While smart connected door locks have been around since at least last year, there are undoubtedly many that are yet to be released. If you’re in the market for a smart door lock that can either be your first smart home purchase or an addition to an already growing set of connected appliances, lighting and other things, consider taking a look at the Kwikset Kevo. The Kevo is a lock that is Bluetooth enabled so you can connect it up to your smartphone and use your device as a way to unlock the doors when arriving home, not by tapping the phone mind you, but by tapping your finger on the door lock when your phone is in proximity.

The Kwikset Kevo while having launched earlier last year, their companion application was only just released as a public beta back in December. That application is now out of beta and is available to everyone in the Play Store who has a Kwikset Kevo lock and will be needing the app to complete the various functions the lock is capable of. The app itself is free to install,(the locks of course are not free, but if you’re installing them yourself all it will cost you is time)and it even pairs up with a Nest smart thermostat so that when you unlock the door upon arrival, the Kwikset Kevo automatically tells your Nest to set the temperature to your desired and configured settings.

The only downside to Kwikset Kevo’s companion app is that it is only compatible with Android 5.0 Lollipop and up right now, and there aren’t a whole lot of devices running on that software yet, although many devices are scheduled to get the updates in the following months ahead. The app lists the compatible devices as the Nexus 9, Nexus 6, and the Samsung Galaxy S5. In time there will be more supported devices of course, and hopefully at some point they’ll add support for devices running on older version of software as well. The Kwikset Kevo itself will run you about $200 on Amazon.

Motorola Designed The Second Generation Moto E To Be A More Premium Device

Moto-E-4G-LTE-AH-03948

After weeks of rumors, Motorola finally revealed the second generation Moto E this week. Although the new generation Moto E looks similar to the original Moto E, it has several changes under the skin and to the device specification. The original device was based around a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor and a 540 by 960 pixel 4.3-inch screen. The second-generation model is based around a new generation, 64-bit, quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor and a 540 by 960 pixel, 4.5-inch screen. The later generation Moto E also benefits from 4G LTE, which was missing from the first-generation model Motorola have discussed why they’ve made these changes to the original device.

When Motorola were designing the second generation Moto E, their primary problem was that of creating “a premium smartphone experience for people who don’t want to spend a lot of money.” Their solution was a specification bump, in some areas relatively minor and in others, substantial, combined with some significant changes to the software functionality. Motorola talked to customers of the original Moto E for feedback of what they liked about the device. The first example that Motorola give is front facing photography, because the original Moto E lacks a front facing camera, but the second generation has one.

Motorola also added a number of the premium features originally found in the 2013 Motorola Moto X together with the dual accelerometers. The first added feature is “Quick Capture,” a way of activating the camera by flicking your wrist. Together with “Quick Capture,” Motorola also added Moto Display, which means the device screen stays dark until the device is moved or nudged, when it will light up to show you your notifications. The Moto E also includes Motorola Assist, which is designed to recognize when the user is busy and unable to deal with messages and calls. It will recognize when you are asleep or in a meeting as two examples and will not disturb you.

And finally, the two headline changes to the new generation Moto E are first, the addition of LTE to the device and second, the ability to customize the device with different colors. The addition of LTE is because Motorola wanted to help customers join the connected world without paying a lot of money. The ability to customize the device is a cheaper way of emulating Moto Maker and the Moto X: Motorola have designed the second generation Moto E to use Motorola Bands, which also have ridges designed to make the handset easier to hold, too.

What do you think of Motorola’s improvements to the second-generation Moto E? If you are in the market for an entry level device, would the Moto E now be on your shortlist? Let us know in the comments below.
