Wednesday Poll: Sound, Vibrate, or Silent?

You can tell a lot about a person by the volume status of their phone. OK, I just made that up, but I am curious as to how everyone typically keeps there phone when it comes to volume settings. An internal polling of the DL crew showed varying results, with some going sound-on all of the time, while the rest were split between full silence and vibrate-only.

So today’s poll is simple – sound, vibrate, or silent?

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Moto X (1st Gen) Android 5.1 Update Hits Verizon Labs Next Week, Also Awaiting AT&T Approval

According to Motorola’s David Schuster, the man with all of the update knowledge, Moto X (1st Gen) owners on Verizon and AT&T don’t have too much longer to wait in receiving the Android 5.1 update.

As stated in a Google+ post, the update is set to hit Verizon’s testing labs next week, and Motorola is currently waiting for AT&T’s lab approval. AT&T has been testing the update in their labs for the past week.

So, with this news, we learn things are moving along nicely, but Verizon does seem to take their time with updates. There is no solid timeframe, but the added transparency is always nice to see from manufacturers and carriers.

We’ll keep you posted.

Deal: $29 for This 3500mAh ZeroLemon Slim Battery Case for Galaxy S6 and Edge

Battery life on the Samsung Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge isn’t something you will be bragging about any time soon. It’s borderline bad, actually. But these phones happen to have the best displays and cameras in any mobile phone, along with a hell of a premium build, so it’s hard to argue against anyone interested in buying one. With that said, we know that battery life is a top 3 category for some, especially those who aren’t near a charger all day long for quick re-fills.

For those people, we give you the ZeroLemon 3500mAh Slim battery case at just $28.99. With this case, you not only get quite a bit of protection, but you also get an extra 3500mAh of juice that can be used once your initial charge runs out. The case will add some thickness, but since the phone is quite small, it shouldn’t be unwieldy.

Companies like Mophie have made these types of cases famous, but they also charge a $100 premium for most. At $28.99, this is a pretty good deal.

The Galaxy Note Edge from Samsung on Verizon is receiving its update to Lollipop, but do note, it is labeled as Android 5.0, not Android 5.1. Inside, users should see big changes to TouchWiz and other various features, including new animations and transitions between application windows.

In the changelog, Verizon lists basic interaction changes, replacement of Blocking mode to “Do Not Disturb,” lock screen and notification enhancements, and of course, the introduction of the floating action button. Oh, what joy Note Edge users should have relearning how to use their phone now with Lollipop on board.

The update is now live for all, so head out and grab it.

Buy a HTC One M9 Through Verizon, Get $100 in Google Play Credit

Beginning today and concluding on 8/31, anyone who purchases a One M9 from HTC through a Verizon retailer will be gifted a $100 in Google Play credit, which is a solid bonus for anyone with a growing wish list on the Play store.

Once purchased, all HTC requires is proof of purchase and your device’s IMEI, then a $100 Google Play code will be emailed to you. This information can be deposited here, but the site has yet to go live. Easy enough, yeah?

We don’t usually see such a great bonus, unless a company really needs to start moving product. But hey, if the One M9 is the phone of your dreams, you might as well get a ton of apps and movies with it.

This deal can be redeemed via Verizon’s website or at any Verizon retailer.

Motorola Left Out Guest Mode and Multi-User Support in Your DROID Turbo’s Lollipop Update

With Android 5.0, Google introduced support for guest accounts and additional users on phones. This is the type of feature that may not be of use to everyone at all times, but it certainly is a welcomed addition to a maturing platform, as it’s there for those who need it. When Google pushed Android 5.1 a few months after 5.0, they didn’t remove the feature. Although, if you are a DROID Turbo owner who recently updated to Android 5.1 (it’s rolling out now to all by the way), you are probably wondering where it is.

According to numerous readers of ours who have received the update either through the soak or today’s official rollout, Guest mode and multi-user account setup is no where to be found on the DROID Turbo post-update. While we don’t have a Turbo in house to check ourselves, we had readers not only look throughout settings, but also perform a search through Lollipop’s new settings search functionality. It’s not there. If you tap on your avatar in the notification pulldown, which would normally be a way to quickly switch users in Lollipop, users are being greeted with a pop-up G+ contact card of themselves.

We have also been told that members of the soak test have taken to Motorola’s forums to express their disappointment in this feature being left out.

The whole situation is odd because Verizon listed it as a feature on the phone in their changelog for the update. The images below are clearly from the Turbo too, because the Turbo has capacitive touch buttons that won’t show in screenshots, just like we are seeing here:

Screen Shot 2015-07-01 at 9.18.22 AM

Motorola, on the other hand, did not list it.

Here is the feature in action on a stock Android device, which is basically what the DROID Turbo is.

Tough to say why it’s gone or if it’ll arrive in a later update. But for now, if you were hoping to take advantage of Guest mode or setup accounts for additional users on your Turbo, you are out of luck.

Cheers Renzo, Jay, and James!

Moto 360 is Now Just $149

Motorola and Google both dropped the price of the Moto 360 today to $149. That’s a $100 discount and could be a sign that it’s time to kill off all remaining inventory before the new 2nd generation model arrives. We have seen the price jump up and down over recent months, but this price cut has happened without asterisks, footnotes, or banners that mention this as being temporary.

Is the Moto 360 still a good buy at $150, even though it’s about to be replaced? $150 is a $150, so it’s not like we are talking about spending pennies here. With that said, it’s a solid smartwatch for a 1st generation device. It has started to show its age (that damn OMAP processor) recently, but still gets the job done. And hey, it also has Android 5.1.1 now!

Look at it this way – you know what you are getting when you buy a year-old, first-gen product that is about to get replaced by a new, upgraded model. It’ll work, but there could be some jealousy in a few weeks. Then again, the new model won’t be this cheap.

Just tossing it out there for those in need of a cheap phone – HTC One M9 (AT&T model) for $449 today from eBay. This is an unlocked AT&T unit and is “manufacturer refurbished,” so it’ll probably work best on AT&T, though it could work decently on T-Mobile.

Highly Anticipated Out There: Ω Edition Update Now Available on Google Play

Out There, a game putting you out to the furthest reaches of space, just received its much anticipated Ω Edition update. This is a free update the developer has released, so for anyone who already purchased this title, you can go grab it now on Google Play.

Inside, the game looks much different, with updated graphics and illustrations, helping to bring this adventure story to life. If you have never played, our protagonist is an astronaut that gets lost in the far reaches of space. Using advanced human technology, learned alien technology, and a bit of good ol’ fashion luck, your only hope is to befriend alien species on various and solve an ancient mystery.

To play, you go from star system to star system, mining ore to build new technology, and trying not to run out of fuel. As you visit different systems, you will encounter random events that require your thought, as the right move may prove extremely rewarding, while the wrong move could blow your space ship to bits. As you progress, the odds of acquiring new space ships and technologies greaten, but again, you have to play slow and methodical to make it that far.

While the update to the game looks fantastic, I have found that action buttons are a bit broken. This will likely require a hot fix from the developer, so don’t get too worried if you download the update and things are not going perfectly. It’s a big update, so things are bound to break.

If you love space exploration, and a bit of mystery, check it out on Google Play.

Android 5.1 ‘Lollipop’ Update for DROID Turbo Now Live

The update of all updates is finally available for DROID Turbo owners, that being the update to Android 5.1 Lollipop. It’s been a long time coming, and frankly, I’m sure a few owners figured it was never coming.

We are seeing loads of happy Turbo owners reporting from across the country that their device is receiving the update, so it is safe to say Lollipop is now live for all.

Turbo owners, the day has come.

To see a full list of changes, look here.

OnePlus 2 Stops Off at Bluetooth SIG, Might Come in 3 Models

The OnePlus 2 will be unveiled on July 27 to the world through a virtual reality presentation that is sure to be something to tell your children about. (Whoa, Kellen, what’s with the heavy sarcasm this morning, bruh?) As we close in on that day, OnePlus is guaranteed to unapologetically hypebeast the hell of the phone by revealing one feature at a time, all the while remaining in headlines and relevant. We’re deep into the (t)rollout of features and loving every second of it! (Sarcasm bath x2.) But because we lack patience, we will also be on the hunt for details that we can unearth on our own, like this filing that showed up at Bluetooth SIG.

These filings always lack fine details, but if we are reading this correctly, it appears as if OnePlus is planning to have three models of the OnePlus 2. If you look at the Product List table in the screenshot below, we are seeing model numbers of A2001, A2003, and A2005. The A2001 has actually popped up in benchmarks in recent months, showing a phone made by OnePlus that runs a Snapdragon 810 processor and has 3GB RAM. As you all know, OnePlus announced that the OnePlus 2 would run a Snapdragon 810.

Also, keep in mind that the original OnePlus One fell under model number A0001.

So what would three models mean? It could be that OnePlus is separating out storage options into separate model numbers. For example, we could have 16GB of storage in the A2001, 64GB in the A2003, and 128GB in the A2005. Or maybe we are looking at model numbers to separate finishes on the phone, like specific numbers for wood backed phones or those with plastic. That’s pure speculation on my part, but potential possibilities.

Thankfully, July 27 isn’t far off.

Thoughts?

YouTube App for Android and iOS Now Supports Playback at 60fps

The official YouTube application for both Android and iOS flipped a switch this morning, allowing mobile viewers to watch select videos in 60fps. I say select videos, since not all videos on YouTube are uploaded at 60fps. However, there is a healthy selection of content creators who upload in high resolution and frame rate, so finding high quality content to consume on your mobile device should not be an issue.

If you have been paying attention, the YouTube app has become quite the little data hog for mobile users, allowing you to watch videos in 1440p, and now 60fps. If you happen to be on a limited data amount per month, you may want to stick to 480p or 720p streaming while on a carrier network connection, just to make sure you don’t hit your data cap too fast in one month. On WiFi? Then stream away!

The change was likely server side, so no updated app is needed. Go check out some 60fps action on your device. Here is one of our videos in 60fps to get you started.

Sprint’s HTC One M9 Gets Android 5.1 Today, LG G4 Gets Minor Update

Earlier in the week, HTC told us to expect an Android 5.1 on the Sprint One M9 come July 1. This morning, they delivered on that promise. The update will arrive as software version 2.6.651.11.

Sprint didn’t bother to list out much in their changelog, only that this is 5.1. I would imagine HTC might sneak in some camera improvements and other little tweaks to Sense. If you get the update, be sure to let us know.

Meanwhile, the LG G4 is receiving a minor update that improves “Reactivation Lock” and lands as software version LS991ZV5.

The update is incredibly small for each phone, takes 10 minutes to install, and is still Android 5.0.2. Build numbers post update are VRU2AOF1 for the Galaxy S6 and VRU1AOE2 for the S6 Edge.

The update appears to be live for all, so feel free to jump into Settings>System updates>Check for new system update.
