Don’t Miss These Android Stories: October 9, 2015

Another week in the books here at DL, filled with Marshmallow goodies for Nexus owners, and a bit of sad news for select Verizon customers. On Monday, Marshmallow was made available on Google’s servers for most current Nexus devices, with OTAs rolling out slowly over the course of this week. In addition to that joyous news, we got a LG V10 delivered to the office that we went hands-on with (review coming soon), and a mystery OnePlus device hit the FCC.

As for the sad news, it was made official that Verizon will be increasing the price on existing unlimited data plans out of contract by $20, leading many to light up the torches and grab the pitchforks.

Here are stories from this week you should not miss.

Have a great weekend, folks!

Verizon Announces Five New Prepaid Data Plans for Tablets and Hotspots

For those in need, Verizon announced five new prepaid data plans today, simplifying its existing plan lineup. The plans range for those in need of a small amount of data while taking a short business trip, to a mobile hacker who needs access to a ton of data wherever he may find himself.

There is no monthly commitment needed.

Devices capable of using these plans are any 3G/4G LTE tablets, mobile hotspots, and other various connected devices.

Archos and Sikur’s Privacy-Centric GranitePhone Now on Sale for $849

Announced during MWC earlier this year, the Archos and Sikur-made GranitePhone is now available for purchase. Keeping your privacy at the center of focus, the GranitePhone offers a completely encrypted experience, meaning you won’t have to worry about sensitive information making its way off of the device and into the wrong hands.

Not only is data on the device encrypted, but backups of data can be stored on an encrypted cloud server, allowing you to access your files from anywhere while secured. According to the website where you purchase the device, the GranitePhone features encrypted calls, messaging, chats, contacts, and dashboard. They really took the encryption aspect seriously during design.

For specs, the GranitePhone features a 5″ Full HD display, Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, 16MP rear-facing camera, 2,700mAh battery, and the Granite OS.

The price for GranitePhone is set at $849, which does seem pretty steep when looking over the specs, but for anyone who needs to keep their work this secure, it’s good to know there are options.

New OnePlus Smartphone Just Hit the FCC

Thanks to a recent filing at the FCC, the rumors regarding a second OnePlus device for 2015 appear to be correct. For the past few weeks, word of a OnePlus Mini has been floating around, with nothing more than speculation and “sources” attributing to its questioned existence. Now, we have a photo of the device and complete documentation. Hooray.

From what we can see in the photo, the device does appear to be a bit smaller than the OnePlus 2, and is reported to feature a 5″ Full HD display. The photo details a USB Type-C port, dual speakers on the bottom side, plus a rear-facing camera. A report from earlier this week claims that the device will even feature NFC, after OnePlus took major flak for not including it in the OnePlus 2.

All other sensitive information was made confidential in the FCC filing.

Please, share your thoughts on a possible OnePlus Mini with NFC in the comments below.

Verizon LG G4 Receiving Android Security OTA Update

LG G4 owners on Verizon are being treated to an OTA update this morning, weighing in at over 400MB. With a size like that, it appears folks were hoping for something of significance, but according to Verizon’s changelog, it’s just a security patch update.

Looking back, it appears the G4 never received a Stagefright patch on Verizon, so it’s likely that this update solves that issue, along with a few other security fixes. If you were hoping for Marshmallow or something awesome, sorry.

The update is rolling out to all owners right now, so if you rock the G4 on Verizon, go grab it.

LogMeIn to Acquire Password Management Company LastPass

LogMeIn, a remote desktop service, announced its plan to acquire LastPass this morning, bolstering the company’s position in the multi-billion dollar identity and access management (IAM) market.

What does it mean for users? All good things, apparently. According to LastPass’ blog post, users on each tier of the service will continue to receive updates and even new features. “Together with LogMeIn, we’ll be able to accomplish more, faster – providing an even better service to millions of people,” the company states.

On the financial side, it appears LogMeIn is set to pay $110 million in cash for all outstanding equity interests in LastPass, with up to an additional $15 million in cash for equity holders and key employees of LastPass upon the “achievement of certain milestones and retention targets” over a 2-year period following closing.

Are you a LastPass user? Happy about the acquisition?
