HTC Desire 826 Gets Announced In China, Goes On Sale Tomorrow

HTC Desire 826 AH-6

HTC will try to sell as many handsets as possible in 2015 in order to raise their smartphone sales profits. The company was forced to cut costs in 2014, and that’s definitely not the way to the top. This Taiwan-based smartphone OEM makes really great devices, at least in my humble opinion, and it will be interesting to see if they can actually move a couple of steps forward in 2015. The Desire 826 was the first handset this company has announced in 2015, this smartphone was announced at CES 2015 in Las Vegas, and we were on the scene, you can check out our hands-on coverage here. The Desire line is company’s mid-range smartphone line, though there are some really compelling devices in with the “Desire” branding already out on the market, and the Desire 826 is definitely a nice addition to that list.

Well, this handset has just in the biggest smartphone market in the world, in China, as expected. The Desire 826 features a 5.5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display along with 2GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of internal storage (expandable via microSD card). This thing is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 SoC, a 64-bit octa-core processor. 13-megapixel camera is located on the back of this thing, and a 4-megapixel UltraPixel camera can be found on the front side of this smartphone. A non-removable 2,600mAh battery ships with this device, and Android 5.0 Lollipop comes pre-installed here. This is a dual-SIM, dual standby handset and it supports 4G LTE connectivity, in case you were wondering. The Desire 826 is made out of quality plastic, and it looks alright, though I’m sure this design won’t appeal to everyone.

This handset will go on sale in China on January 29th, which is tomorrow. The 16GB version of the phone will cost you 2,299 Yuan ($368), while the 32GB model will set you back 2,499 Yuan ($400). Previous reports were touting a somewhat lower price than this, but I’d say this is just alright considering everything you get here. The Desire 826 is a rather powerful mid-range offering by HTC, and I’m sure that it will appeal to some of you. Let us know what you think of this handset and if you intend to get one.

Meizu’s ‘Connected’ Press Event Has Just Started, Watch The Livestream Here

Meizu-M1-Note-Launch-AH-1

Xiaomi has announced a slew of devices this month, and it’s time for Meizu to show what they got. Company’s “Connected” press event in Beijing has started, if you’d like to watch the livestream, follow this link. Keep in mind that this conference is in Chinese though. That being said, the company is expected to announce the Meizu M1 Mini (could be called differently though), a smaller version of the M1 Note phablet. This device will sport significantly different specs compared to the M1 Note, at least according to the latest report. The M1 Mini will also probably sport only Chinese network bands. The device will quite probably sport the same design as the affordable M1 Note smartphone.

That’s not all though, the company will quite probably announce some additional hardware as part of this conference (smart home stuff perhaps?), as well as some partnership agreements. AKG, Opera browser and App Pei partnerships have been teased by the company, so that’s probably something we’ll see announced as well. Anyhow, the conference has already started, if you’d like to follow it, just click the link above and it will take you straight to the livestream. Let’s see what Meizu have up their sleeve today and if the company will be able to surprise us like the usually do. Meizu did great in 2014 and I’m sure they’d like to continue doing the same in 2014. This company is on the rise, but they’re still not that close to the big players in China, if they continue doing what they’ve been doing thus far, that will surely change in the near future, they’ve announced a couple of great devices in 2014 and those handsets are selling really well in China.

What do you think Meizu will announce at this conference? Let us know what you think in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you, as usual.

Twitter Rolling out Video and Group Messaging to their Mobile Apps

Twitter-AH-03224

Today, Twitter is rolling out a few new features to their mobile apps. They aren’t really “new” per say, as we have heard about them already. One is Twitter Video. Now you’ll be able to host videos right there on Twitter. So you can capture videos straight from the Twitter app as well. It’s kinda like Instagram meets Twitter. Except, you can record longer videos. You can record up to 30 seconds of video and post it in a tweet. That’s probably to keep the videos from being too large, because then it’ll take a while for them to upload, obviously.

The other feature that Twitter has announced and is releasing today is group messaging. So no more of just Direct Messaging one person, you can direct message all the people you want together. Which is kinda cool, but I’m not sure how often it’d get used. Although I’m sure teenagers would use it quite a bit. From Twitter:

“Private conversations on Twitter are a great complement to the largely public experience on the platform. You might prefer to read (or watch) Tweets but converse about them privately. You might want to continue a public conversation privately with a smaller group, or start one based on a Tweet you saw. Many of you use Direct Messages to reach the people and brands you’re only connected to on Twitter. Whatever the case may be, the ability to converse privately with groups gives you more options for how and with whom you communicate on Twitter.”

So those two features will be rolling out to the Twitter for Android and Twitter for iOS apps today. They will be available on the respectable app stores in a short bit. Pretty nice features, and nice to see Twitter adding features that users will actually use. That’s always a good thing. Make sure you follow us on Twitter and let us know how you like the new features.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Rumors: Dual-Screen, Health and Fitness Functionality and More

Samsung 6

Plenty of rumors popping off of the Rumor mill this morning regarding the Galaxy S6. Today we’re hearing a few different rumors in regards to the Galaxy S6. The first one is that Samsung might be releasing multiple backs for the Galaxy S6 with Camera lens attachments. Which sounds very intriguing. We’ve seen all kinds of lens attachments for smartphones, we’ve even reviewed a couple. But to see Samsung actually sell them will be interesting. Samsung does have a camera division – remember the Galaxy NX, and the Galaxy Camera? So it’s not like they couldn’t make these attachments themselves.

The next rumor is Extended S Health. According to Sammobile, it looks like you’ll be able to measure blood sugar with S Health on the Galaxy S6. That’s in addition to all of the other features that S Health already provides, including checking your heart rate, measuring your steps, measuring your calorie intake, etc. As if that wasn’t enough, you’ll also be able to upload these to the cloud, so your doctor can monitor you. Which is pretty cool actually. Samsung is also working on sports equipment, like bikes, to work with S Health. So Samsung is looking to take their Health and Fitness approach to the next level, which I really like. Getting fit is something a company like Samsung could really push.

Next up is the fact that Samsung wants to give you a YotaPhone 2. You might remember YotaPhone. They are the ones that have the dual screen smartphone. With an AMOLED display on the front and an e-ink display on the back. It may not be as customizable as the YotaPhone 2 is, but it’ll definitely be better on battery for reading on your smartphone.

How many of you are excited for the Samsung Galaxy S6? Be sure to let us know in the comments down below.

For better or worse, Sony is finally going to cut back on frequent smartphone releases

Sony logo CES 2015 DSC_0059

Sony’s financial troubles as of late haven’t gone undocumented. With unfortunate layoffs, the sale of key buildings and the need to spin off certain divisions to keep itself afloat, the company is willing to do anything to stop the massive bleeding that once had their credit rated as “junk.”

The latest move comes in a big shift in strategy for the company’s mobile division, a unit which costs Sony hundreds of millions of dollars every year and was said to be the biggest burden on the company’s expected 2015 losses of $1.9 billion.

The Japanese company is reportedly looking to cut back on smartphone releases and will instead look to prolong their flagship smartphones’ life cycles. As such, it’s said they will not be revealing a new flagship at Mobile World Congress and will instead wait until the summer months to show off their next big thing.

It’s not uncommon to see Sony release as many as three flagship smartphones in a calendar year, and while it’s fun for us techies to see new smartphones and gadgets often the practice comes with a fair bit of downside. The problem with such frequent releases? Here’s a quick primer:

  • It splits the marketing focus between far too many phones at one time instead of pushing one rock star product above all else.

  • Consumers are always wary of what’s right around the corner, so they hold off buying knowing it won’t be long before the current product is one-upped with the latest and greatest.

  • Research and development costs, engineering and production, and the subsequent distribution of a smartphone all cost a ton of money, time and other resources. Those resources and that energy could instead be pooled into one project to deliver the best possible product from angles of design, specifications and features.

HTC found themselves in the same rut not long ago and opted to slim their top-line portfolio down to just one or two key devices every year ( HTC One M7 and HTC One Max for 2014, HTC One M8 for 2015). That move, along with other key business decisions — like the sale of Beats and a renewed focus on mid-range offerings – allowed HTC to get the arrow pointing back in the right direction.

Some Sony fans who value the wealth of options afforded to them might be saddened to hear this news, but if this is what Sony has to do to avoid having to sell their mobile unit then you should definitely be on board. Better to see them prosper in new ways than to wither off into nothingness.

Report: Samsung To Challenge Qualcomm With Its More Advanced 14nm Technology

Exynos and Snapdragon AH

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips are widely acclaimed in the mobile industry nowadays. These mobile SoCs offer great performance and many manufacturers use them in their devices, no matter if we talk about budget-friendly phones, or the higher-end ones. There are other SoC manufacturers which are trying to compete with Qualcomm though, like a Chinese company MediaTek for example. MediaTek is nowhere near Qualcomm at this point though, but they’re not the only threat though, Samsung and Huawei make their own SoCs (Exynos and Kirin, respectively), same goes for LG.

You may recall that recent reports were claiming that Samsung might axe Snapdragon 810 in favor of their very own Exynos chip as far as the Galaxy S6 goes, allegedly because Qualcomm’s newest chip has overheating issues. Well, LG has denied such claims by Samsung and claims that the chip performs fine in their G Flex 2 handset. Well, overheating might not be the reason behind Samsung’s claims, at least according to the newest report from Korea, which states that Samsung wants to go head-to-head with Qualcomm by using their 14nm manufacturing process. As a reminder, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chip is built using the 20nm manufacturing process.

The source goes on explaining that both Exynos 7420 and Snapdragon 810 are already making their way to the market (or will soon), and that Samsung’s Exynos chips are finally ready for primetime after some overheating issues with the Exynos 5 series, because of which Samsung was releasing 2 versions of their devices or using other manufacturer’s chips (depending on the device) in the past. What does this 14nm manufacturing process means? Well, it should mean less power consumption and a smaller processor footprint, but we’ll see how these two chips perform side-by-side really soon.

Do you think that Samsung will once again release both the Exynos and Snapdragon versions of their Galaxy S handset, or will they deploy only the Exynos SoC in the Galaxy S6? Let us know what you think in the comments, we’d love to hear from you, as usual.

Another HTC One M9 Concept Popped Up, This One Sports Two Headphone Jacks And Solar Panels

HTC One M9 another concept_7

We’ve been getting a lot of HTC device rumors lately. The HTC One M9 is not the only phone that was mentioned, not by a long shot, I think that about 3-4 different models were dubbed via various leak channels in the last couple of weeks, which is just insane. To make things even worse, all of these versions were somehow related to the M9. In order to step away from all that at least for a second and catch a breath, we’ll share another One M9 concept with you today, made by Google+ user Hass. T, who already designed an HTC One M9 smartphone before and shared his vision with us.

He says that he’s still working on this, and that his vision is still not finished, but this is a 90% completed product according to the designer. He also says that this design is far more realistic than his first attempt at designing the M9, mainly because this version resembles the M8 far more. You can of course find a bunch of images in the gallery below the article, but let’s talk about the device for a minute. The phone is presented in Slate Grey, White / Silver, Gold, Red, Blue and Pink color options. The device seems really, really slim. Fingerprint scanner is present here as well, according to the designer, and it is located in the area where the “HTC” logo is, in order to make it fit nicely with the design of the phone. This imaginary device also has three lenses, the main lens is there to focus on the main object, while the second lens focuses on the color and the third lens on the background of the image you’re taking.

What would an HTC One device be without the BoomSound speakers, well, they’re present in this idea, though they look fairly different. There are four separate speakers on the front side of the device. The phone also has two headphone jacks instead of one for some reason, and this concept even has solar panels embedded on the top of it. Keep in mind that this in no way represents the HTC One M9, or any of the HTC products for that matter. This is just an idea by a designer who decided to share it with us, that’s all. The images look really nice and I know you guys like concepts, so… anyhow, let us know if you like this concept.

Huawei Exceeded Expectations In 2014, Company’s Revenue Increased 30% Last Year

huawei-logo-2

We’ve already received some information regarding Huawei’s financial results in 2014, along with top Chinese smartphone manufacturers. Thanks to that info, we knew that this China-based company did really well in 2014, but the company has just released their official 2014 results. Huawei’s official results have only confirmed our previous info, the company did great in 2014, anyhow, let’s check out the info Huawei provided.

Huawei has some fierce competition in China from a number of companies, like Lenovo and Xiaomi for example. Let’s just right to it, Huawei’s revenue has increased 30% in 2014, which is commendable no matter which way you look at it. The company’s revenue was $12.2 billion, which are record-breaking numbers for Huawei, they never crossed the $10 billion mark. The company has sold 138 million devices in 2014, feature phones and smartphone included. Huawei managed to earn profit on 75 million units, as far as smartphones are concerned, which is a 45% increase compared to 2013. Wonder which smartphones old best for Huawei? Well, the Ascend P7 was extremely popular it seems, the company has sold 4 million P7 units in the first six months of its existence, and 2 million units of the Ascend Mate 7. We’re talking about global sales here, not just China, just so that you know. Huawei also managed to sell 20 million units of their Honor-branded smartphones.

Huawei has announced that they will focus on manufacturing mid and high-end devices in 2015 and are hoping to sell over 100 million units in 2015, while Xiaomi is hoping to do the same. “Our strategy of focusing on premium mid- to high- end products has borne fruit, with 2014 resulting in significant achievements in a number of areas including product R&D, brand awareness, channel development and growth in market share which further consolidated our number three position in the global smartphone market. The global influence of our brand has continued to grow, and Huawei has become the first mainland Chinese company to successfully enter Interbrand’s Top 100 Global Brands of 2014 list,” said Mr. Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei.

There you have it, Huawei did really great in 2014. Are you surprised by these numbers? Have you had the chance to use a Huawei smartphone in 2014 or perhaps own one?

Report: Xiaomi Mi Note Pro Won’t Be Available Until The Beginning Of March

AH Xiaomi Note Pro-6

Xiaomi has announced the Mi Note and Mi Note Pro devices during their press conference on January 15. These are Xiaomi’s new flagship devices, and the Mi Note went on sale in China today, was sold out in less than 3 minutes, and a new batch arrives February 3rd. I bet many of would like to know when will the Mi Note Pro be available, right? Latest reports have been saying that the phone will be available at the end of March, but according to our sources, the Mi Note Pro might go on sale at the beginning of March. This is not set in stone just yet, but it seems like Xiaomi plans to launch this thing as soon as possible and the beginning of March seems plausible, at least according to our source.

As far as international availability goes, you know that Xiaomi doesn’t ship their devices internationally, but you can get them via various resellers, like Spemall for example, who have both of these devices listed already. Keep in mind that the Mi Note Pro won’t and can’t ship before March though, we’ll let you know when it becomes available. The Mi Note, however, might ship soon from resellers should you choose to purchase a copy. The device will be somewhat more expensive than it would be in China, but I’d argue that it’s worth it. Xiaomi did a great job building the Mi Note handsets and pricing them as low as possible, so even the reseller prices are not that bad considering what you get with these devices.

The Mi Note and Mi Note Pro phablets both sport a 5.7-inch display, 13-megapixel cameras with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), dual-LED, dual-tone flash and look basically the same on the outside. There are significant differences on the inside though, the Mi Note features a 1080p (1920 x 1080) display, 3GB of RAM and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 801 quad-core chip, while the Mi Note Pro sports a QuadHD (2560 x 1440) display, 4GB of RAM and will be powered by the Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core processor. Are you interested in either of these handsets?

Gold-Colored Huawei Honor 6 Plus Is Now Available For Purchase In China

Huawei Honor 6 Plus Gold_1

Huawei Honor 6 Plus really surprised me when it was launched, not only by its specs and design, but its price. Huawei wasn’t always the most price-aware company out there, but the Honor 6 Plus was definitely a step in another direction. This handset brings forth really great specs, and in its basic variant it costs only 1,999 Yuan ($322), which is great. Well, the gold-colored version of this handset is available starting today as well. Huawei also says that their device is is more difficult to manufacture than the gold iPhone 6 and 6 Plus because it’s completely covered in this color, unlike the aforementioned Apple devices.

This version of Huawei’s phablet costs about $390 in China, and it comes with LTE connectivity, in fact, this is basically the same model as was announced back in December, only its color is different. The Huawei Honor 6 Plus features a 5.5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. This handset is powered by Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 925 octa-core processor which ships with Mali T628 MP4 GPU for graphics. 3,600mAh battery comes with this device as well, and Android 4.4 KitKat comes pre-installed here with Huawei’s very own EmotionOS on top of it. Two 8-megapixel cameras are located on the back of this device, and Huawei’s OS comes equipped with a ton of software features to make this experience better / more fun. This thing also has an 8-megapixel sensor up front, which should be more than enough for you to shoot some nice selfies, if that’s your thing, of course.

Huawei’s definitely has plans to offer their Honor-branded smartphones in the U.S., so this device might be a part of their setup in the States, but we don’t have any official information regarding that, nor whether the company intends to sell the Honor 6 Plus (either version) in Europe or other parts of the world. You can always get a copy via resellers of course, though that will cost you a bit more than it would in China, but that is to be expected. Anyhow, let us know what you think of this handset, do you like the color or are you one of those who just avoid Gold-colored phones altogether?
