Samsung’s sexy all-metal A series exposed on video as company prepares for massive drop in quarterly profits

Samsung-Galaxy-A5-render1

We’ve seen Samsung’s plans to finally include aluminum in their handsets with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Alpha being just the tip of the iceberg. Word on the street is Samsung could be planning for a new series of “Galaxy A” handsets — the Galaxy A3, A5, A7 — with the Galaxy A5 pictured in the flesh only few weeks ago.

Today, we’re getting yet another possible glimpse at these upcoming smartphones and their (unique to Samsung) unibody-like design, this time in leaked press renders, as well as video and shots of the device in the wild. According to sources, these phones will feature a nearly all-metal construction, different from the Galaxy Alpha or Note 4 which only have an aluminum frame, but feature Samsung’s now trademark soft-touch plastic back covers.

Pricing varies according to model, but it’s being said the mid-range A5 could retail for around $400 off contract and feature a 5-inch 720p display, Snapdragon 410 processor, 2GB RAM, 13MP shooter, 2,300mAh battery, 16GB internal storage with micro SD expandable storage. Because aluminum is a little harder to come by, expect limited availability depending on region — there’s no indication we’ll see a launch stateside although we wouldn’t giving these new devices a shot.

With Samsung reportedly expecting a massive drop in earnings this quarter (a 60% drop during the same time a year ago), it’s clear they’re going to have to do something different. The big question is whether or not a new premium line of mid-range handsets will be enough to address criticism that their devices have, traditionally, felt anything but premium.

HP 10 Plus, a tablet running Android 4.4.2, available for $279

hp_10_plus_official_front

On the same day that it splits from Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, HP is launching a new tablet. The HP 10 Plus is already available through select retailers for $279. At the price, you get quality hardware with what seems to be Android 4.4.2 untouched. There are no signs that HP messed around with the user interface.

HP did not skimp on the specifications. The 10.1-inch display is a has a resolution of 1920×1080 and the entire device weighs 1.46lbs. Under the hood is a quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM. The 16GB of internal storage is joined by a microSD card slot to make some more room. The 10 Plus houses a 7700mAh battery that HP claims will last up to six hours. Not the greatest battery life, but it is not awful.

On the back is a 5MP camera while a 2MP camera sits on the front. They are capable of recording in 1080p and 720p, respectively.

Obscure lets you edit messages, send them, and delete them later if you want

Obscure is a new free app that has arrived to Google Play, bringing an experience somewhat akin to photo/message sharing apps like Snapchat but with a few twists to the experience.

Obscure actually lets you send messages and pictures to your existing contacts, Google+ friends, Facebook friends and other sources. While the messages don’t expire, you can delete them any time after sending them off. This is good if you accidentally sent a message or picture, or if your situation changes and you no longer want a contact keeping on to your pics and messages. If you’re afraid someone is going to take a screenshot of your messages/pics in order to permanently save them, Obscure says that it disables this from happening (though a smart modder can probably find a way around this).

Beyond this, there’s some interesting features like a text filter to scramble your messages if you want to keep them private from someone looking over your shoulder, or you can also apply a variety of filters and stickers/doodles to the pictures you send to your friends (obscuring them, hence the name). For more details, you’ll want to check out their Google Play listing.

Android Wear App Hits Version 1.0.2 With Updated Play Services For Wearables [APK Download]

unnamed (1)

With a big OTA expected to hit Android Wear devices starting around October 15th, Google has just published what might be a preparatory update for the Android Wear companion app. Taking the app up to version 1.0.2, the update adds about 3MB to the APK's file size. Google hasn't published a change log quite yet, but we can already tell from a cursory teardown that the new version brings with it an update to Google Play Services for Wearables (a package sent to the watch from the app) - version 6.1.11 (up from 5.0.91).

Google enables MMS for Google Voice for North American carriers

google_voice

Alex Wiesen, a lead manager with Google’s Google Voice team, announced today that MMS support within Google Voice is now live for almost 100 North American based carriers. To the dismay of many people, the list of carriers that gave the go ahead to roll out this update does not include Verizon. Customers on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile in the U.S. as well as Rogers, Bell Canada and Telus in Canada will have this new option available to them.

Google has not released a list of carriers getting this new integration, so we only know about the carriers listed above at this point. We also do not know whether an update to the Google Voice app, or Hangouts, is required to access this new functionality.

Support for MMS means users can now receive pictures using Google Voice. As Alex Wiesen noted in his announcement, users will no longer have to worry about fomo, the fear of missing out. Along with sharing media like pictures, the MMS support for group messages is limited to appearing as individual messages from a single individual. Another project manager with the Google Voice and Hangouts team, Mayur Kamat, indicates the team is still working on the group MMS functionality.

Sony Unleashes Some Press Images Of The Xperia Z3 For T-Mobile On Their Website

AH Sony Xperia Z3 Tmobile TMO Press-6

The Sony Xperia Z3 for T-Mobile seems to be right around the corner, and we may very well hear something about it at Sony’s upcoming event. We have known since it’s actual announcement that the Xperia Z3 would be getting a U.S. launch via T-Mobile’s network as Sony had stated so during their press event at the IFA conference last month. They also stated that it would be getting a launch in a fairly timely manner in the Fall, and although the phone has yet to hit T-Mobile’s retail sales channels, there’s a great possibility that we could see the phone hit this month. Up on Sony’s mobile website they now have press images up of the Xperia Z3 for T-Mobile, although sadly only one color is listed, Black, and that the phone will be coming soon.

There are no exact dates listed on page, but we know that a fall release is happening and coming soon makes us think October is when we’ll see it. If it happens to hit T-mobile’s shelves this month we don’t know exactly when you can buy it or for how much just yet, but it can’t be too far off. For now we can at least take a look at some press shots that Sony has taken of the phone, and we have all of them uploaded for you here to check out below. Sony reminds us to demand great when seeking out a new device, and the more and more we take a look at the Xperia Z3 the more we’re thinking that is exactly what we should be doing, and the Z3 seems to be the solution.

With only one color listed there is no word on whether or not T-Mobile and Sony plan on launching any other colors, but even the device in one color on a proper U.S. carrier line up is better than none at all, which is what we saw with Sony’s Xperia Z2 device that they unveiled back at CES in the beginning of the year. Although the Xperia Z3 doesn’t look too different from past iterations, the design is still elegant and has a premium look and feel, and there’s just something special about that 20.7MP rear facing camera and the highest waterproof rating of any other smartphone on the market.
