Report: Nintendo to Announce First Game for Mobile Tomorrow

According to Wii U Daily, Nintendo is set to announce its first game for mobile phone platforms tomorrow. Sadly, it is reported that we should not expect a port of one of Nintendo’s more popular titles, but the game should be an original concept. In addition to an original concept, the game will not feature ridiculous in-app purchases, which is something we can all be happy about.

Back in March, it was announced by Nintendo that the company would in fact be entering the mobile gaming industry, but at that time, they gave no details as to what mobile gamers should expect in terms of genre or partnering studios. Tomorrow, we should know anything and everything we need to know.

Since it is stated that we should not expect any ports or remakes, I guess I shouldn’t hold my breath for an awesome Mario or Pokemon port.

Do you have any ideas as to what Nintendo might announce?

Google Keep Update Allows You to Draw on Notes

An update arriving today to Google Keep introduces a feature that finger doodlers will surely appreciate. You can now draw notes!

The update will likely rollout slowly beginning today, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see it right away. Once you have it, you will see a new pen-like icon in certain spots where Google will allow you to draw. While we don’t have the update, a GIF Google sent us shows pen icons at the “Take a note” screen and when viewing images, so you should be able to both doodle on attachments and also start new notes.

Google Fiber Announced for Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Announced today by city officials and Google, Oklahoma City is getting Google Fiber. Before all of OKC riots in excitement, acting as if OKC has brought home a NBA championship, do note that from what we have seen in past cities, rollout of Fiber is quite slow. But don’t worry, it should be well worth the wait.

Like all other cities where Fiber is currently available, there will be three pricing tiers to choose from. You have the free tier, which is access to basic Internet, Gigabit Internet, and then Gigabit Internet + TV. Pricing for all of this, including installation costs, will be made available once the service is actually rolled out to residents.

OKC Mayor Mick Cornett states, “We’re very excited to be at this point in the process. We’ve had ongoing conversations with Google since 2012 and today we are moving forward with a game-changing opportunity to enhance broadband access in Oklahoma City – both in terms of speed and access.”

Congrats to all of you OKC residents.

To prepare for its arrival, which could still take quite some time, check Fiber’s OKC landing page here.

Microsoft Kills Sunrise Calendar, Will Fold Features Into Outlook (MEH.)

In mid-2014, a calendar app called Sunrise made its way to Android. I adopted it day and have stuck with it ever since because, well, it’s awesome. It not only works with your Google calendars, but it integrates with a whole bunch of other stuff, like Asana tasks, Facebook events, SongKick concerts, your favorite sports teams’ schedules, and more. Seriously, even after Google made the stock Google Calendar all pretty last year, I couldn’t make it as seamlessly powerful as Sunrise and after a short 2-week cheat period, came running back to the third party calendar maker.

We have featured Sunrise in write-ups for our “This is My Android” series, called it a top app of 2014, and even mentioned it as one of the first 15 apps I install on every single new device. I don’t know that it’s the best calendar app available, but it is certainly up there and I can’t live without it. Unfortunately, I have no choice and will soon have to.

Remember when Microsoft bought them earlier this year? If not, just know that they did. At the time, they told us that Sunrise would remain and Microsoft would eventually share news on how they would build their technology into other Microsoft apps. That happens to be (at least in this situation) code for, “We are going to shut this f*cker down, eventually.”

And yep, Microsoft announced today that Sunrise is dead. Sunrise and all of its features will now be built into Outlook apps on iOS and Android, an email app that no one cares about. Unfair? Whatever. I’m mad that Sunrise is dying. I am. And so I’m taking it out on Outlook…OK I can’t do that. Outlook is actually a pretty sweet email app, assuming you can bring yourself to leave Gmail or Inbox (which you can’t), and integrating Sunrise is only going to make it that much better. But dammit, I want my stand-alone Sunrise. I do. Because I don’t want to use Outlook. MEH.

EDIT: I give up having fun in articles. I give up. Yes, folks, I am fully aware that Outlook is a legitimate email app. I even said so in the damn article. Actually, in the paragraph directly above, I said as much. This was me just fuming at Microsoft killing my favorite calendar app and then taking cheap jabs for fun at Outlook. Again, I give up.

In related news, Microsoft did announce that Outlook is getting a big Material Design update with redesigns for things like the header, message list, compose, People list, and contact details experiences. It starts rolling out in November.

As for the “When does Sunrise officially die?” question you are about to ask. The answer is simple – Sunrise apps will no longer receive updates going forward. Again, Sunrise is dead. MEH, again.

Google Play Games Updated With Record & Share Feature

Calling all mobile gamers who wish to share their gaming experiences with the world, you may now do so. Thanks to an update for Google Play Games, you can now record any gameplay you do on your smartphone, then edit and share that gameplay footage directly to YouTube. Not to confuse this with YouTube Gaming, which allows you to stream gameplay to YouTube, Google Play Games is an offline option for those who wish to do a bit of editing before allowing the world to view it.

When recording, you can choose any game on your device, then opt for either 480p or 720p (HD) recording. Then, select if you want your beautiful face and voice to be present, and start playing. Once your session is complete, you can trim, edit, and then upload directly to YouTube.

The update is now live on Google Play, so have at it.

Google USB Type-C Chargers Back in Stock on Google Play

Did you purchase a Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X? Then you should probably pick up a few USB Type-C chargers while they are available on Google Store, as you can rest assured that they will be fully compatible with both devices.

On the product description page, it states you can charge quickly with the chargers, but since we do not have one of these in-house, we don’t know specifically if they will charge “rapidly” on the 6P or 5X, but we have to assume so. The specs do not specify voltage and amps, but they are 15W.

They are not exactly cheap, either. For a standard charger, you are looking at $25. There is also a dual-port charger for $39.99.

Get them while you can.

Cricket Adds Data Roaming to Canada and Mexico at No Extra Cost

This morning, Cricket announced that it has added data roaming to their Smart ($50) and Pro ($60) plans at no extra charge. This means that Cricket customers can use their monthly data allotment when traveling to Canada and Mexico.

Cricket isn’t saying what types of speeds you will see in either country, but not having to pay extra for the little data you use on vacations is a nice bonus. And keep in mind that Cricket already had unlimited calling, texting, and messaging between Mexico, Canada, and the US.

Curious, but how many Cricket customers do we have? Assuming you can handle their throttled data speeds, their plan prices are kind of unbeatable.

YouTube Red Goes Live Today

YouTube Red is hitting YouTube accounts this morning, allowing those who pay the $9.99 a month, or already subscribe to Google Play Music All Access, to view all YouTube videos ad-free. In addition to ad-free video playback, subscribers will also have the ability save videos for offline video playback for when you don’t have data or WiFi connection.

Another feature baked into Red is the ability to listen to videos while your display is off or other apps are in the foreground. This is called Background Play. According to YouTube, they are working to bring Red to additional countries, as well as other apps like YouTube Kids, YouTube Music, and YouTube Gaming in the near future. For those who wish not to use Red, don’t worry, you can still use YouTube the same way as always.

And yes, if you pay the promo price of $7.99 for Play Music from when it first launched, you also get access to YouTube Red for completely free.

For those already subscribed to Play Music, YouTube Red should automatically pop up on the YouTube homepage. Under your YouTube settings, you will see a new tab for Red, where it details your billing and status.

YouTube Red

If you do not already have Play Music, do you intend to spend $9.99 a month to see YouTube videos with no ads, in addition to ad-free music on Play Music? If you are on the fence, YouTube is offering a free 30-day trial, but you need a credit card.

Samsung’s 18-Inch Galaxy View Tablet is Official

This morning, Samsung officially took the wraps off its Galaxy View tablet, which is the behemoth of a slate that has been talked about ad nauseam lately because of its enormous 18.4-inch display.

The tablet, while big, doesn’t exactly scream “high-end” now that we are seeing the specs breakdown. That 18.4-inch display is just Full HD (1920×1080) and it only has 2GB RAM. Samsung is bragging about its battery life, though, that can supposedly last through 8 hours of video, thanks to the 5700mAh battery inside. The tablet has has 802.11ac WiFi, LTE, an octa-core processor, cameras, and runs Android 5.1. Samsung is also talking up the tablet’s “video-centric interface.”

We don’t yet know pricing or a date of availability.

Anyone interested?
