In the game, kids get to style the heck out of people’s hair, run their own salon, and choose from six different characters. Fun times.

Deal: Unlocked Galaxy S6 is Just $529 Today at eBay

A featured deal popped up at eBay this afternoon that includes a brand new, unlocked Samsung Galaxy S6 with 32GB of storage for just $529. That is a hell of a deal for a phone we just dubbed the best Android phone you can buy.

This is model SM-G920F, which is one of the unlocked international variants. The other is the SM-G920I. This model should work without a hiccup on AT&T, but should also work well on T-Mobile. I have the G920I as an unlocked Galaxy S6 and have used it on T-Mobile. Both appear to have similar, if not the same, bands.

As for the price, well, this is almost $200 lower than the AT&T and T-Mobile full retail prices. Since it should work on both carriers, this is a tough deal to pass up if you are in the market for a new phone.

Cheers Joe!

The Best Android Phone You Can Buy Today

Every week, at least three or four or twenty people ask us in some way or another, “What phone would you recommend I buy?” In reality, they just want to know what the best Android phone is that they can buy today. I get why we get asked. After all, we handle every new flagship under the sun.

Since there are so many good phones these days, the decision hasn’t become any easier in recent years. Before, though, we use to worry about whether or not a phone could last two years. Now, the criteria is much more specific. People want to know which phone has the best camera or the best battery life or the best display. What’s the storage situation like? Is it made of metal or cheap plastic? How often does it get updated?

Rather than try and answer all of those questions in individual emails, we thought we may as well just put our thoughts out there every so often, so that everyone can see what we think the best Android phone is that you can buy. Don’t worry, though, we’ll keep this simple and to the point. You have other things to do.

Ready?

The best Android phone you can buy today is the Samsung Galaxy S6.

3 Best Phones - 6

Why? Because it comes the closest to ticking all of those boxes we just mentioned. The Samsung Galaxy S6 has the most premium build and design of any current phone with its glass front and back, metal frame, and jewel-like color options. It feels amazing in hand, is incredibly thin yet easy to hold, and actually might impress someone if you laid it down on a table.

Outside of its looks, the Galaxy S6 is also about as future-proof as a phone can get and has a number of “best in class” features to brag about. The Galaxy S6 features the best smartphone display on the planet (5.1-inch QHD Super AMOLED), along with arguably the best smartphone camera on the planet (16MP with OIS). It uses Samsung’s latest Exynos 7420 64-bit octa-core processor, which is no slouch in the performance or gaming departments, one of the best fingerprint sensors around, the fastest internal storage currently in mobile phones, and supports both of the wireless charging standards. Oh, it also supports fast charging, so you can charge your phone up in minutes instead of hours.

All of that combined with Samsung toning down the skin they place atop Android and you have a phone that is going to be hard for anyone to beat. It’s premium. It’s fast. It’s the best at almost all of the things that matter in a smartphone,

What’s wrong with it, though? OK, so every phone still has its flaws and the Galaxy S6 is no different. It’s not waterproof or resistant, doesn’t have its famous removable battery anymore, and lacks a micro SD card slot. Samsung also isn’t the fastest at updating its phones, but so far, they seem to be on top of Galaxy S6 updates. Battery life on the S6 is pretty poor too. With that said, if you can live without the waterproofing, a removable battery, and SD card slot, this is the best phone available today.

Be sure to read our Galaxy S6 review to learn all there is to know about color trickery.

A close runner-up is the LG G4.

3 Best Phones - 8

Why? The LG G4 falls just shy of the Galaxy S6 because of a couple of key areas, but outshines it in a couple of others too. First, the LG G4 lacks that premium build and feel of the Galaxy S6. It’s not metal, filled with glass, and doesn’t trick your mind with cool color-changing tricks. It’s not that the LG G4 is ugly, but even with its leather options, this phone comes off as another hastily designed and built, big and plastic Android phone. LG is also about the worst in the world at updating its Android phones, so should you buy the G4, you could be without current software for months longer than the rest of us.

All of that in mind, understand that this is a phone with few faults. It has an insanely good 16MP camera that may be as good as the Galaxy S6’s. Some would argue that it’s better because of its full manual controls. It also sports a greatly improved 5.5-inch QHD LCD display, plus has a removable battery and micro SD slot. And as I just mentioned, it has leather back options that can be hot-swapped to your current mood. Yay for leather!

Is there any way you would choose it over the S6? If I needed to be able to swap batteries on the fly and insert a micro SD card into my phone and also hate all things Samsung, then yes, I would consider it. Otherwise, it’s pretty tough to go with the G4 over the S6.

Be sure to read our LG G4 review to get the full scoop on LG’s 2015ness.

If you can’t stand either of those phones, go with the Nexus 6.

3 Best Phones - 7

Why? Look, some people can’t stand Samsung, while others don’t want anything to do with whatever LG is baking into its software experience. For those, we give you the Google phone, which just so happens to currently be the Nexus 6. The Nexus 6 may be a whale and impossible to use unless you have three hands, but it still gets updates the fastest, has a capable camera, really solid build and design from Motorola, and can take advantage of all that Android has to offer. It will be one of the first phones to get Android M later this year as well.

What’s wrong with it, though? It’s codename is “shamu.” That’s Google being clever about the phone’s size, which cannot be understated. This phone is huge. Other than that, there isn’t much to hate about the Nexus 6, especially now that you can buy it for $499 at most places and use it on every single major carrier in the US.

Be sure to read our Nexus 6 review to see a free preview of Free Willy 8.

3 Android Apps Worth Downloading – Periscope, Walloid Pro Wallpapers, Microsoft Hyperlapse

We are back again with 3 Android apps, not games, that we think are worth your time if you have not yet already downloaded them. During these posts, we like to showcase a few popular apps, as well as maybe not-so-known apps that deserve a bit of limelight.

This week, we are taking a look at Twitter’s Periscope, Microsoft’s Hyperlapse, and the Walloid Pro HD Wallpaper apps.

Each offers something very different, naturally, so be sure to look below and learn more about them if you have yet to try them out.

Periscope

We have one person on the DL staff that doesn’t much care for Periscope and Meerkat, or any other livestream app for that matter (cough, Kellen, cough), but I appreciate Periscope and what it does to bring real-time events taking place directly to another person’s smartphone.

Linked directly to your Twitter account, users can stream live video over the Internet to anyone who follows them. For example, if I was rummaging through kicks at Foot Locker, demonstrating at a political rally, or just doing something spontaneous and adventurous, I could send video of my experiences directly to you. It’s all about sharing whatever you want with people from across the globe.

Periscope is free to download and use, but you do need a Twitter account. But those are free, too, so nothing is holding you back from seeing what others are sharing, or sharing a little bit of your own.

Play Link

Walloid Pro HD Wallpapers

Wallpapers! Seriously, we can never have too many wallpapers, and thanks to the app called Walloid Pro, I get access to wallpapers from all of my favorite phones and custom ROMs in a single place, all in HD quality.

When you open the app, you can choose which source you want to see wallpapers from. For example, you can view all stock wallpapers featured on various HTC or Samsung devices, or you can access wallpapers from custom ROMs such as CyanogenMod and Paranoid Android.

Walloid Pro costs just a couple of bucks, but if paying ain’t your style, there is a free version available right here. But if you like the work, which I think you will, help the developer out.

Play Link ($1.99)

Walloid - 2

Microsoft Hyperlapse

While we still wait for Instagram to launch its own Hyperlapse app onto Google Play, even though they are clearly too busy rolling out ads to feeds, Microsoft has a solution of their own called Microsoft Hyperlapse. And you know, it’s actually pretty great. It’s a basic app, but extremely functional for how minimal it is.

To get started, you can record a new video or import from your gallery. If you decide to record a new video, simply click “record.” The video will begin recording at 4x speed, which means for every 4 seconds in real life the video will be 1 second long. For some basic arithmetic, let’s say your video is 1 minute long in real time. That means your hyperlapse will be 15 seconds long. Anyway, you can record whatever you like, and the point is to turn your long video into an action-packed condensed version. Once you are done recording, you can choose how sped up you would like the video. You can choose from 4x, 8x, and 16x. Pro tip, 16x is the fastest.

Now, this app is still in beta, so to download, you will need to follow these instructions carefully to get it. First, join this Google+ community. Then, click this link to become a tester. Then, and only then, will you be able to find the app on Google Play to download it.

OnePlus on Rumors: OnePlus 2 Will Cost More Than $322, Phone’s 810 Won’t Melt Your Face

Yesterday, OnePlus announced that the OnePlus 2 will run a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 chipset. Thanks to the controversially hot (not “hot” in a good way, folks) year that the Snapdragon 810 has entertained, you can’t blame fans for sharing their disappointment in the news. OnePlus attempted to address those concerns in another post to their forums, this morning, while also speaking on rumors of a random price that has floated about the dark tunnels of the interwebs.

According to OnePlus, the Snapdragon 810 is “much more powerful than its younger counterpart, the 801.” (Get out of town!) It’s also more expensive. (You don’t say!) And thus, because of the better performance and spike in cost, the price of the OnePlus 2 will “certainly be higher than $322.” Where did that random $322 price come from? Some random hole on the internet, as far as we can tell. But OnePlus has seen that number in headlines, so they used it in their blog post.

The original OnePlus One started at $299 for 16GB of storage and jumped to $349 for 64GB of storage. If the OnePlus 2 is going to cost more than $322, don’t be surprised if it starts around $400. In fact, CEO Pete Lau told us back in May to expect a starting price of around $400.

As for the face melting heat news, OnePlus once again mentioned that they have “taken precautions” and think the 810 will run much cooler than you expect it to through the special care they have given the phone with the help of Qualcomm.

T-Mobile Adds 2GB of Mobile Hotspot Data for Unlimited Plan Users

For customers on an unlimited data plan, T-Mobile confirmed to Fierce Wireless this week that they have automatically added 2GB of data for mobile hotspot usage, allowing customers to use it however they feel is best.

For $80, folks on the unlimited plan already had 5GB allotted for mobile hotspot usage, but now, unlimited users get 7GB. This change was first rumored by TmoNews back on June 7, and when speaking to Fierce Wireless, a T-Mo rep stated, “Yes, we’ve enabled mobile hotspot benefits on all active data plans.”

So, it’s already there for all of you who pay the $80 a month. Have at it.

Report: Google Wants a Future Where You Don’t Have to Install Apps

According to a report out of The Information, Google is secretly working towards a future where you don’t have to install apps on your phone anymore. Instead, users will be able to stream them, if you will, which Google hopes makes accessing services and accomplishing tasks easier. Assuming you have an internet connection of some sort at all times, there is actually some potential here, as long as you love all things Google.

This report claims that Google bought a company called Agawi last fall. Agawi, as you are probably already guessing, specialized in streaming apps from the cloud to mobile devices. Before it was acquired by Google, Agawi had companies like NVIDIA as its clients. While we aren’t sure what that relationship entailed, one could imagine that it potentially involved NVIDIA’s GRID gaming service, which is a game-streaming experience that doesn’t require users to install games, yet they can play with low latency as if they had.

Google is said to have acquired Agawi to bring back some power to Google Search that they may have lost by native apps. That could mean that they want you to be able to search for “Facebook” in search and then access it immediately through a web interface that is as powerful as an app. The vision there is quite murky, but a streaming or cloud version of an app that is accessed via Google services, would indeed bring back some of what Google has lost in recent years.

On a related note, this acquisition of Agawi could also just be a way to do something as simple as allow you to try apps before you buy them. By streaming a trial version of an app, you would be able to give it some run without having to download it to your device. This could make it easier for developers to convince you that you should spend money on their apps or games.

While I hadn’t envisioned a life without app installs, I also can’t say that I wouldn’t mind not having to install every single thing on my phone. We do have incredibly fast WiFi and mobile data connections these days, why not use those for faster access to things we want? Something to think about.

Samsung Releases Full Statement on Keyboard Vulnerability Issue, Fix Incoming

Thanks to publicity surrounding a vulnerability found in the way Samsung updates its language packs on the stock keyboard app, powered by SwiftKey, a fix is incoming for those who find tinfoil hats fashionable. As we went over in our exploit breakdown, the chances of becoming a victim to this vulnerability seems extremely low, and as declared by Samsung in a full statement released today, there has been zero cases of this happening among device owners.

In a big blog post, Samsung goes over what happens when devices become at-risk, and as already stated, the vulnerability “requires a very specific set of conditions for a hacker to be able to exploit a device this way.”

To combat any would be hackers, Samsung shall release a security policy update in the next few days that will rollout to all vulnerable devices.

The likelihood of making a successful attack, exploiting this vulnerability is low. There have been no reported customer cases of Galaxy devices being compromised through these keyboard updates. But as the reports indicate, the risk does exist and Samsung will roll out a security policy update in the coming days.

Samsung KNOX has the capability to update the security policies of our devices, over-the-air, to invalidate potential vulnerabilities caused by this issue.

Thank goodness this is over.

5 Android Wear Watch Faces to Try: 70s, Minmo, Mustache, SpecOps, and Candy Shop

When I look for an Android Wear watch face, I try to find those that remind me of traditional watch faces or at the very least, fit nicely onto a round display to make the device on my wrist feel less futuristic and more classic. It’s not that I don’t appreciate the technology behind a smartwatch, it’s just that I want the watch on my wrist to look like a watch first before getting to all the extra notification, fitness tracking, and other stuff.

Once I find a watch face I like, I tend to stick with it for a while because I feel like there are few really classy options out there on Android Wear. I don’t know why, but watch face makers seem to want to cram as much crap into these things as is possible, when they really should be doing the opposite. A watch, at least an analog watch, should show you the time and date, and then maybe a battery percentage to keep you informed throughout the day. The rest of the stuff is just getting in the way of a great looking watch.

So after spending some time recently to see what’s new in the Android Wear watch face world, here are five I think you will appreciate.

android wear watch face-5

This watch face is called 70s, and it is without a doubt, my favorite watch face of the moment. There aren’t a bunch of fluffy options to tweak, it just looks great as an analog watch. It has hour, minute, and second hands, along with right placed day-date ticker. There are no digits on the markers, as this is a true analog experience where you actually have to know how to tell time.

It comes in orange, green, blue, or purple, but I keep finding myself settled into this orange version. It’s 100% free.

Play Link (free)

android wear watch face-3

Mustache is probably the most feature-rich of the watch faces I’m listing here today, but those features are all actually quite good. Mustache shows you both digital and analog times (though I wish you could turn the digital clock off), along with battery meters for both your phone and the watch. You can change it to a light or dark theme, or even have it automatically switch from one to the other depending on the time of day. You can select from a number of badges (I went with the anchor), chose a 24H clock, and tell it to show bigger digits when in ambient mode.

This is a great minimal watch face that still manages to pack in the right kinds of features for a smartwatch.

Play Link (free)

android wear watch face-2

This watch is called SpecOps because I’m assuming it is based off of a military-style watch. I like it because it’s clean, has hour and minute markers to help you quickly tell the time, but also includes a day-date ticker. It has dark or light skins, but I prefer the dark based on the location of the day-date. Like the 70s clock, this doesn’t have a bunch of special features, it just tells the time and shows you the date.

Play Link ($0.99)

android wear watch face-4

MinMo has been a great watch face for months now. It has both dark and white themes, though the white faces on the Moto 360 never seem to look great to me, so I tend to stick with the darker options. This is a minimal analog clock, but does show you battery percentage and day-date to add some depth. You can also tell the second to hand to sweep or tick, depending on how you like a watch to look.

Play Link ($1.49)

android wear watch face-6

Candy Shop is kind of a silly, but some times you just need some color in your life. It has both digital or analog faces, dark or white themes, and options for battery and day-date. As colorful as its markers and hands are, it still looks really clean.
