Hangouts 7.0 Pops Up, Introduces Quick Reply and Save to Home Screen

Oh boy, a big Hangouts update is arriving on Android! It’s version 7.0.113001250 and it includes quick reply! I don’t why I’m acting so excited, since this is still Hangouts we’re talking about, but this feature has been needed for far too long. It’s great to finally see it as it makes quickly replying to a conversation so easy and simple without interrupting what you are doing. Remember, Google Messenger received this functionality almost a year ago.

Anyways, the update started rolling out earlier today and one lucky dude grabbed it and uploaded the APK file for us to enjoy. We have that for you below.

Outside of quick reply (where you get to quickly reply through notifications on top of your current screen), you will now see an option tucked inside of the conversations menu that allows you to save the conversation to your home screen. As you can see in the screenshot below, I easily created an entire folder of conversations on my home screen. How useful is that?

The rest of the update includes minor UI tweaks that only the purest Material Design freak will notice. Enjoy!

Best Android Phones on Verizon: January 2016

I don’t know that I can count on one hand, the times that we have been asked to give our opinion on which is the best phone for this carrier or that network. So, like we have done in the past with these types of questions that pop up time and time again, we thought we’d just start talking openly about the topic on regular intervals. And since many of you are still attached to Verizon, possibly even holding onto an unlimited data plan, we’ll start there before making our way through the rest of the major carriers.

Now, our answers will change as the year progresses and new devices arrive, but we need to start somewhere and so we decided January would be the best time to get this going. What we have for you below are the three best Android phones we think you can buy today on Verizon.

Ready?

Note:  This post focuses on the Android phones you can buy at Verizon. This post isn’t touching on the unlocked options out there, like the Nexus 6P or Moto X Pure Edition. We know those fully work on Verizon, but they aren’t sold at Verizon stores.

galxay note 5 verizon

The Best:  Galaxy Note 5

This shouldn’t shock anyone. In our end of 2015 round-up on the best Android phone you could buy, we raved about the Galaxy Note 5, even though it came in just below the Nexus 6P. But just because it didn’t top our list, doesn’t mean that we wouldn’t swap a 6P for a Note 5 and not feel just as good about life.

You see, with the Galaxy Note 5, Samsung has ticked almost all of the boxes one could ask for in a smartphone. They put the best display and camera the world has ever seen in a smartphone. They also gave us a beautiful glass and metal body that fits perfectly in the hand, even though it’s a large device. They tossed in an improved S Pen, included a big enough battery to get you through almost any day, and utilized never-before-seen features like fast wireless charging. And let’s not forget that the Note 5 is one of a handful of phones that can take advantage of Samsung Pay, which is far and away the best mobile payment system on the planet.

The Galaxy Note 5 has few issues, but if you want a big one, it would be its lack of timely software updates. We are almost into February and this phone still doesn’t have Android 6.0 Marshmallow. We also don’t know when that will come. That’s unfortunate, because this phone could get even better with the behind-the-scenes improvements from Google’s latest version of Android.

To get the full scoop on the Galaxy Note 5, be sure to read our review.

As of today, you can pick-up the Galaxy Note 5 from Verizon for around $29 per month or $696 at full retail. By no means is this phone cheap or attempting to compete with the value phones of the world, but when you look at all of the tech and high-end finishes that Samsung included, you can understand why it carries a premium price. This is one of those phones that seems worthy of its high price, and that’s not something I say often.

With the Galaxy S7 arriving within the next couple of months, it’s tough to say if the Note 5 will remain here. Honestly, though, I wouldn’t be shocked if it does.

droid turbo 2 verizon

The Runner-up:  DROID Turbo 2

The DROID Turbo 2 is one of those phones that has a lot going for it (insane battery life and performance, shatterproof display, good camera, SD card slot, and Moto Maker), but it doesn’t quite nail it all. That’s not to say that you won’t be 100% satisfied with it, it’s just that it lags a bit in overall experience when you compare it to the Galaxy Note 5.

We tend to really like the Turbo 2 because of its “pure” Android experience that has given it (along with Motorola optimizations) one of the fastest and smoothest performance experiences in any phone I have ever used.  This phone just screams without lag. But it also really does have a shatterproof display. Seriously, you cannot crack this thing. That’s due in part to the plastic elements that make up its ShatterShield technology, but it truly is the phone for those with clumsy hands.

Outside of those two features, we can’t help but praise Motorola for the work they have done with cameras this year, and that includes the Turbo 2. They should also be praised for the high-end specs of this phone, inclusion of a microSD slot, the massive 3760mAh battery tucked inside, and the options in Moto Maker to let you customize a phone.

The Turbo 2 does have its issues, though. The display, while shatterproof, isn’t exactly the best looking display on the planet. The design of the phone is also quite middle-of-the-road, at least when considering the white model (buy the black one if you decide you want the Turbo 2). This phone doesn’t have wireless charging or a fingerprint reader and is loaded up with awful amounts of bloatware from Verizon. We also don’t know when it will see the update to Marshmallow, since Verizon is typically horrendous when it comes to updating its flagship phones in a timely manner.

To see an in-depth view of the Turbo 2, be sure to read our review.

The DROID Turbo 2 can currently be purchased from Verizon, with Moto Maker customization, at a starting price of $26 per month or $624 at full retail. Like the Note 5, this isn’t a value buy here. Instead, this is a high-end phone with mostly top-of-the-line finishes that command a steep price. To choose this over the Note 5, I think someone would have to be looking for insane battery life, coupled with a stock Android experience. Otherwise, spend the extra few bucks per month on the Note.

lg v10 verizon

Another Option: LG V10

If neither of those phones is doing it for you, maybe because you don’t trust Samsung or Motorola, you may want to consider something completely different in the LG V10. I clowned on this phone a bit when it was first announced, but ended up really liking it for the most part during my review period.

The LG V10 has a really incredible, big and beautiful display that I wasn’t expecting to see. It has a really unique design with steel bars running up its sides that I appreciate, especially after looking at so many similar phones on a daily basis. I also found the performance to be quite good, which is saying something for an LG phone, and the battery life to be up there with the best of them. LG even did some nice things with the gimmicky secondary display on the V10.

I think where the LG V10 trails those other two is in things like the software and camera departments. LG has always had one of the worst takes on Android and nothing changes here. But outside of that, the camera just isn’t as good as the shooters from Samsung and Motorola. The phone is insanely large as well, and completely unmanageable with one hand.

Look, if you want a tough phone, with an SD card slot and removable battery, and a really unique design, the V10 might just be the phone for you. Just remember that the software, camera, and size could all be an issue.

Be sure to read our full LG V10 review if you haven’t already.

You can currently buy the LG V10 from Verizon for $28 per month or $672 at full retail. That seems a bit steep to me and I would actually recommend you sit tight before jumping quickly at the V10. The LG G5 should be here within the next two months and should top this phone in almost every category. That likely means we’ll see discounts arrive to the V10, dropping it to a more reasonable price point.

What do you think? If you had to buy an Android phone on Verizon today, which would you choose?

Snapchat for Android Update Includes Reverse Video Filter

A recent update to Snapchat has brought yet another filter for you to have a bit of fun with. Late last year, Snapchat brought the ability to speed up and slow down video, but now, Android folks can send videos that are reversed, leaving the door wide open for a lot of creepy and cool clips.

After recording a video as you normally would, you can swipe left and right through the various filters. Do this until you come across the three arrows pointing to the left. When selected, the recorded video will be played backwards, which can then be sent to your Snapchat friends.

After testing it out myself, it works fantastically. I was able to recreate the famed Freddie Mercury line, “another one bites the dust” backward, and yeah, it sorta sounds naughty.

Now, take the left hand path and make your own little Stairway to Heaven video.

Nexus 5X Now Priced at $299 Through Google Store

Earlier this month, we saw Google drop the price of the Nexus 5X from its original $379 price to $349, but today, Google has dropped the price once more, now sitting it right at $299.

We don’t exactly know why the Nexus 5X keeps seeing price drops, but it is entirely possible that the phone is not selling that well. Its larger sibling, the Nexus 6P, does seem to be much more popular among the folks who would purchase Nexus devices. However, with the Nexus 5X now priced at $299, it’s a crazy good deal for anyone looking to purchase a relatively cheap vanilla Android smartphone that will receive direct Google support into the foreseeable future.

If you need actual reasons to purchase this phone, here are five of them.

Now, if only Google would consider dropping the Nexus 6P to $399, we would all be in business.

Check Out Tap’n Slide on Google Play, Free to Play With No IAPs

Google Play, and any app store for that matter, is probably filled with tons of yet-to-be-discovered app and gaming gems. The latest to be discovered, which was first published in late 2015, is Tap’n Slide. The game is very reminiscent of Crossy Road, or the classic Frogger game, but instead of going side to side and backward, you can only go forward.

To master the game, you must time your block’s slide perfectly, or you will run into the black blocks that glide horizontally across the screen. Along your journey forward, you must collect red blocks, which give you points. As you slide more and collect more blocks, the points you gain can be used on different color themes for the game. Naturally, the farther you slide, the harder the game becomes with an increase to the size of the obstacles.

For a free game, likely done by a one-person team, the controls are rather responsive, and thanks to easy accomplishments, you can really boost your Play Games achievement ranking in no time at all. Within my first 100 slides, I had already gained 10,000 XP on Play Games.

As stated in the title, the game is completely free to download on Google Play, and features no ads or IAPs. In 2016, this is somewhat of a rarity. While the gameplay is somewhat repetitious, it’s done well, and for that, I think you should go check it out.

HTC One M10 “Perfume” Might be a Lot Like the One A9

Leaker @evleaks posted an exciting note to Twitter last night for those interested in HTC’s next flagship, largely thought to be called the One M10. He Tweeted a short “It’s ALIVE,” along with the image you’ll see below that calls out the phone’s codename. He then followed that Tweet up with one suggesting that the One A9 might have served as inspiration for the M10.

In the image below, you can see that most has been blurred out, but Evan did leave the carrier, model number, and codename in the clear. While we aren’t sure of this image’s origin, it does look as if we should expect the One M10 to show up at AT&T at some point, under the codename “Perfume” and model number HTC 2PS650.

A quick search for that model number brings up a server log that shows the phone likely being testing in the wild around January 20 and running Android 6.0.1 build MMB29M. That is the latest version of Android.

CZmn_BJWYAAdEao

As for the reference to the One A9, Evan could be referencing the design language of the phone. In other words, we could be in for another iPhone clone from HTC. Obviously, one should expect upgraded internals, like a Snapdragon 820 and a QHD display, but we could (and should) see a fingerprint sensor located at the home button location on the front chin, plus a combination of metals and glass. I don’t expect HTC to take any chances this year. Don’t be shocked if this is much of the same from the past couple of years.

If the HTC One M10 is just a more powerful One A9, are you going to be satisfied?

LG Plans to Launch Two Flagship Phones in 2016

LG announced its quarterly and annual earnings this morning, but more important than the financial mumbo jumbo, the company gave a bit of insight into its smartphone agenda for 2016.

In the earnings report, with a portion dedicated to the LG Mobile Communications Company, LG declares it saw a 12 percent increase in sales over the previous quarter, and shipped a total of 15.3 million LG smartphones in Q4. Over the entire year of 2015, LG shipped 59.7 million devices, an increase from 59.1 million in 2014.

The real news, though, is LG states that the company will release, “two new flagship models and a more cost-competitive value chain,” to improve profitability in the new year.

The smartphone marketplace is expected to be increasingly competitive in 2016 due to anticipated premium models from competitors and further price competition within the mass tier space. The introduction of two new flagship models and a more cost-competitive value chain is expected to improve profitability in 2016.

We can safely assume that one of the devices this portion refers to is the LG G5, set to be announced at MWC next month. In addition, we could also see a sequel to the V10, which a lot of people in the US seem to enjoy.

In our eyes, if LG starts investing more in premium hardware, but most importantly, trims down its skin and gets back to delivering an experience that matters to consumers, the company could really benefit in 2016.

Are you ready for two flagships from LG in 2016?

Inbox on Android Gets Improved Search With Quick Cards for Orders, Flights, Bills, and More

Inbox is still my email app of choice, not only because it makes managing my email so much easier and more efficient, but it keeps getting sweet new features. Today, Google says that search inside of Inbox will be smarter than ever, bringing you results in a hurry, with quick cards for many.

Now, when you want the status of a package or order, details on a dinner reservation or hotel confirmation, or your frequent flyer number, you can do short searches for those (ex: “delta frequent flyer” or “dinner reservation”) and Inbox will do its best to return results in the form of a mini or quick card that will present the info asked for or give you links to see related info that is specific to the completed search.

See the GIF below for a bunch of examples from Google.

search

Along with the quick cards, Inbox will also start to show a “Top results” section after a search has been completed that attempts to order results by their relevance. Below that section, you will then find your normal, in order by date, results.

Google hasn’t said if this is all coming in an update to the app or via server-side switch. My guess is this will all just start happening within the next few days. Let us know if you are seeing the new cards!

DEAL: Nexus 6P in Gold is $50 Off at Best Buy

For what I can only imagine is a limited time, Best Buy has slashed the price of the Nexus 6P in gold by $50. That means the 32GB version is $449 and the 64GB version is $499. Those are Black Friday level prices for a phone that we still consider to be the best Android phone you can buy today.

This gold model isn’t any different from the white, aluminium, or graphite models, other than the fact that it has a gold paint job. At one point, it was a Japan exclusive, but at CES, Huawei and Google announced that it had reach wider availability. In the US, that means it can be purchased through the Google Store or at Best Buy.

Be sure to read our review of the Nexus 6P if you haven’t already, and then get you some gold.

Cheers Trevor!
