Don’t Miss These Android Stories: April 8, 2016

Another week in the books here at DL, highlighted by the posting of our LG G5 review. If you have not read it yet, be sure to do so. On top of reviews, we covered potential Galaxy Note 6 news, got another look at the HTC 10 ahead of next week’s unveiling, learned about BlackBerry’s Android plan for 2016, and may have gotten our first look at Motorola’s flagship for the new year.

Other news consisted of us reminding all T-Mobile customers that they can claim their free season of MLB TV Premium from the carrier, oohing and ahhing over the new Google Play icons, and LG refuting any type of reporting that the G5 features a plastic body.

Look below if you missed any of the goodies from this week.

Have a great weekend, folks!

Here’s Another Look at the HTC 10 in White Ahead of Next Week’s Unveiling

HTC is scheduled to unveil the HTC 10 on April 12. That’s next week, Tuesday to be specific. Before that happens, though, here is yet another leaked photo of the device in White. With this image, we get a great close-up of the Sense 8 user interface we expect to see on the phone when launched, as well as a look at the fingerprint reader on the frontside. From what we can tell, it’s essentially the same reader that is built into the One A9, which is a solid reader. And yes, the capacitive buttons are there, too.

This is by no means our first look at the phone, as we have seen plenty of images and leaked press renders ahead of this. For the past few weeks, HTC has been teasing the “power of 10,” with the company highlighting what we can expect from the phone’s camera, BoomSound, and performance.

According to the latest benchmark posted online, we can expect the HTC 10 to come equipped with a 5.1″ QHD display, Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 12MP rear-facing UltraPixel camera, 5MP front-facing camera with a bit of special selfie tech built-in, and Android 6.0+.

The unveiling event kicks off at 8am EST on April 12 online for your streaming pleasure. For all you west coast peeps, that’s 5am.

T-Mobile to Ship Marshmallow Update to LG V10 Next Week

According to T-Mobile’s Des Smith, owners of the LG V10 should see their Marshmallow update begin to rollout next week. To compare, Verizon sent out Marshmallow for the V10 back in March, and AT&T still has yet to release any intel regarding an update.

The V10 was released in October, and since then, owners have had to endure Lollipop. With the update to Android 6.0+, users will benefit from comprehensive app permissions, Google’s Now on Tap, Doze for improved battery life, more control over notifications, as well as plenty of bug fixes.

Naturally, T-Mobile customers who don’t own the V10, instead owning some other device that has yet to be updated to Marshmallow, are upset. This includes the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6, and Galaxy Note 4. According to Des, the V10 is, “the first one comin’ out of the chute!”

Everyone else waiting for Marshmallow will need to hang in there.

BlackBerry Plans to Launch Two Mid-Range Devices in 2016

In a recent interview, BlackBerry CEO John Chen, confirmed that the smartphone maker would look to introduce two mid-range smartphones in 2016. Previously, if BlackBerry would focus on high-end or mid-range smartphones in 2016 was unclear, but Chen states that the Priv was simply priced too high for enterprise customers.

“A lot of enterprise customers have said to us, ‘I want to buy your phone but $700 is a little too steep for me. I’m more interested in a $400 device’,” Chen told The National. With that being said, a focus on getting prices between $300-$400 could likely be what’s to come.

According to Chen, one smartphone will feature a full touchscreen experience, while the other will feature a physical keyboard. At this time, Chen has not provided any further details, such as timeline for launch or actual pricing considerations.

The BlackBerry Priv launched with a price of $720 in the US, which is certainly a high-end flagship price. However, while the Priv was BlackBerry’s flagship, it did not compete alongside other Android flagship devices in terms of features. While the company’s focus on Android security was noted, there was not enough to draw in the amount of customers BlackBerry was hoping to see.

If BlackBerry releases a $350 Android smartphone, much like the Priv in design, would you be more interested?

Verizon Customers Who Ordered a Galaxy S7 and Want Your Gear S2 or Gear VR, You’re In for a Wait

Back when the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge was still up for pre-order and launched through Verizon, the carrier was offering a free Gear VR headset or Gear S2 smartwatch to select purchasers via a promotion. Now that the deal is over and folks are cashing in on the promotion, Samsung has been overwhelmed by the amount of takers, and is now sending out emails regarding when folks should expect their smartwatch.

As stated in the email being sent out to those whose claimed the promotion, folks may be waiting until May or even further into the summer season for their smartwatch or VR headset to arrive. That’s quite the wait. The same is also being said on Samsung’s promo website.

Here is what Samsung is saying.

Due to the high level of interest in the Gear VR promotion, delivery times for Gear VR and Gear S2 are now extending into May and potentially Summer 2016. You have the choice of submitting for the Gear VR or Gear S2 on delayed shipment or a $100 coupon code towards a purchase of any product category on Samsung.com.

For those not wanting to wait, it appears Samsung is willing to offer a $100 coupon code for usage on its website, which is good for the impatient.

Did you receive this email from Samsung?

Report: Galaxy Note 6 to Feature IP68 Water Resistance, May Include Iris Scanner

According to the latest report from SamMobile, the Galaxy Note 6 from Samsung will likely feature the same IP68 rating for water and dust resistance as the Galaxy S7. This news should not come as too much of a shock, as water resistance appears to be quite popular among buyers of Samsung’s latest devices. More interestingly, though, intel dug up by another source, GalaxyClub, claims Samsung is working to include an iris scanner in the Galaxy Note 6, too.

Let it be known, we have been discussing Samsung’s potential to place an iris scanner in the Galaxy lineup since the Galaxy S5 in 2013. Every new year, it seems that a rumor pops up about the inclusion of ocular-based identification technologies, and yet, nothing ever seems to come of it. However, intel suggests that Samsung’s R&D department recently received a large shipment of “IRIS CAM (Parts for Samsung Mobile),” leading some in the industry to assume they must be for the Galaxy Note 6. While the addition of an iris scanner would be quite fancy, we won’t hold our breath.

Additional details surrounding the Galaxy Note 6 are limited at this time, though, the device is reported to feature a 5.8″ display and potentially up to 6GB of RAM. Yes, 6GB. There is also a rumor floating around that claims we may see Android N shipped on the device, but that we find hard to believe if industry analysts are correct in predicting Samsung will announce the device in June of this year.

While we are busy arguing on where OEMs should place fingerprint readers on our phones, Samsung is ready to bring out Minority Report-like tech in 2016. Are you ready for it?
