LG G5 Will Have an Always-On Display

Been wondering what LG would do to make the G5 standout? Outside of the phone’s dual cameras and premium build, it looks they are also planning to give it an always-on display. Through a GIF posted to the company’s Facebook page this evening, we get to see a glimpse of the always-on action.

The GIF below mentions the fact that the G5 will “Never go asleep while others do,” and that the G5 is “Always ON.”

LG G5 display

You may recall that the LG V10 had a similar feature thanks to its secondary ticker display. In fact, I raved about it in my review. This, though, appears to be an area smack in the middle of the main display rather than a ticker. Does that mean AMOLED? Does that mean another trick? I don’t know but I’m excited.

Always-on or Moto Display style features are some of my favorite in the history of Android phones. With LG able to accomplish this, they are adding simple functionality that really is also really powerful.

DEALS: Nexus 5 32GB for $140, DROID Turbo for $170

Need a phone at the moment, maybe one that is a temporary placeholder as we wait for phones like the LG G5 and Samsung Galaxy S7 to arrive? Today, there are two phone deals worth looking at.

The first is for the Nexus 5 with 32GB storage that can be had for just $140 over at eBay. The second is for Verizon’s DROID Turbo that can be had for as little as $170 over at Groupon. Each phone is refurbished, so they aren’t new. But again, they could be great placeholders for someone in-between phones or who may have broken their current phone and can’t fork out another $500-$600 at the moment for a new one.

The Nexus 5 is the original and will work on T-Mobile and AT&T here in the US. The DROID Turbo will work on Verizon (of course), but should also see GSM HSPA+ support on AT&T. If you want the full LTE experience, though, you really will want to stick to Verizon.

To get the DROID Turbo for $170, use coupon code “EXTRA15” at checkout.

Marshmallow Rolling Out to AT&T LG G4 and Sprint One M9

LG G4 owners on AT&T and One M9 owners on Sprint should see the update to Android 6.0 this week, as detailed by both carriers. For the G4, the update is labeled as software version H81020n, weighing nearly 1GB in file size. For the One M9, Sprint labels the current version as 3.41.651.4

Regardless of the device, Marshmallow should bring many exciting features for Android owners, such as Doze, comprehensive app permissions, Now on Tap, App Standby, Do Not Disturb settings, and much more.

Both updates should appear as OTA updates this week, but if you do not receive a notification, you can attempt to begin the process by checking for an update through your settings menu.

Go grab those updates.

Question of the Day: What Kinds of Accessories do You Buy for Your Phones?

When you buy a new smartphone, not only do you get to enjoy a brand new phone with new features and a new camera and a new gorgeous display, you also get to think about the kinds of accessories you might want to pick up alongside it. That could mean cases, skins, stands, screen protectors, wireless chargers (if supported), fast chargers, SD cards, cables, battery packs, headphones, etc. While the accessory market has evolved over the years from exclusive, device-specific products to products that mostly work universally from one phone to the next (unless you are a Google Nexus phone), I think we still tend to want to outfit our new phone with something extra.

In today’s question of the day, we want to know what kinds of accessories you buy for your phones? What are the best Android accessories that you seem to pick up with each new pick-up? We know that a number of you buy cases, but are you also picking up fresh SD cards or battery packs or quick chargers? If so, which brands are you going with?

Final Fantasy IX Available on Google Play, Priced at $17

As teased in late December, Square Enix has released Final Fantasy IX, a game that should bring back fond memories for those who played the same title back in the day on the OG PlayStation.

Much like past releases for modern platforms, Square Enix has changed and updated a few features, including high-definition graphics, newly added achievements, auto-save, a high speed mode, and several game boosting features.

The story for FFIX goes a little something like this. Zidane and the Tantalus Theater Troupe have kidnapped Princess Garnet, the heir of Alexandria. However, what they did not know is that the princess wanted to escape the castle anyway. Coupled with unusual circumstances, the princess and her personal guard, Steiner, team up with Zidane and take off for an “incredible journey.”

As a note, the file size for this game is no joke. It is listed at roughly 4GB, with 8GB of storage needed to download it. The initial download from Google Play is 1.4GB, so make sure to have plenty of available storage before attempting to download.

Have at it.

Verizon’s Galaxy Note 4 Gets an Amazon Bloatware-Killing Update

Our inbox has made it clear to us that a number of you still own the Galaxy Note 4 on Verizon and were prompted to update yesterday afternoon. The update, which is arriving as build VRU2BPA1, is still Android 5.1.1, but does include the latest in security patches, an upgrade to Samsung Knox, and kills off the Amazon Appstore and Amazon Widgets. Hooray for limited term bloatware contracts!

And that’s it. It’s not Marshmallow and probably won’t be for a while because you know who this phone is attached to. Good times in the land of slow as hell updates because carriers like you to buy new phones instead of update them to “test” things.

The update is live, so feel free to grab it by going int o Settings>System updates and “Check for new software update.”

Cheers Jeremy, Jim, Sean, and everyone else!

Galaxy S7 Edge Will Have a 3600mAh Battery, According to FCC

Yesterday, a new batch of FCC filings popped up for new models of the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. These appear to be the Korean and international variants (FCC ID is A3LSMG935KOR), which likely only differ slightly (like in band support) from the batch of US models that cruised through last week. We typically wouldn’t take a second look through new filings, but depending on who is doing the testing, we often see minor differences in how things are reported. Because of those differences, there tend to be slip-ups that reveal new information.

In the new Galaxy S7 Edge listings, the FCC label document has confirmed to us the battery size for Samsung’s new curved edge phone. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the regular S7.

As you can see in the screenshot below that was taken from the S7 Edge’s label document, below the FCC ID and battery level, you get a “Battery capacity” that reads 3600mAh. That capacity lines up with past rumors. Since those rumors are correct, you might want to expect the other rumor about the regular Galaxy S7 having a 3000mAh battery to be true as well.

In terms of capacity, 3600mAh is quite large. Last year’s Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Note 5 topped out at 3000mAh, the Nexus 6P had 3450mAh of juice, and the DROID Turbo 2 clocked in at 3760mAh. It seems as if Samsung listened to our complaints about battery life last year and is attempting to address the problem.

Nike SNKRS App Now Available on Google Play

Nike, true believers that iOS is the one sole operating system for the general populace, finally released its SNKRS app onto Google Play this week after being available for Apple users back in May, 2015. For those who lineup or wake up early every Saturday and hop onto the computer to score the latest pair of fresh kicks, the SNKRS app can now handle all of your mobile shopping needs.

The app is quite simplistic and easy to use. Upon booting up, you log into your Nike+ account, which should already have your billing and shipping info, then you browse Nike’s vast line of products. Users can search upcoming releases, as well as past releases. If you find a shoe you like, click on it, select a size, and purchase.

At first launch, Nike requests that you input your favorite kind of kicks, which can help speed up the discovery process. For example, if you are a fan of Kobe, KD, Jordan, and Prestos, SNKRS will show you what’s available in those categories first. It’s a nice touch.

If you fancy yourself a sneakerhead, there is no way you don’t download this app immediately.

Have at it.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Wallpapers Leak, Available for Download

Thanks to a forum member who goes by the nick JK Shine (get it?) over at SamMobile, we supposedly have the wallpapers for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. There are 13 in total and they certainly look a lot like Galaxy S wallpapers we have seen in the past. They all feature those sort of swooping brush stroke, sea-ish, futuristic jellyfish designs that we have grown accustomed to with Samsung phones. They also tossed in a couple of Material Design friendly options.

And yes, the wallpaper you are seeing in the renders above, that hilariously looks like a “6” even though these phones are of the S7 line, is included.

Assuming you are a fan of Samsung wallpapers (I personally am not), you can grab them all at the source link below or here.
