Square Cash was launched two years ago but now it seems to be gaining traction by putting a social spin on mobile payments. Users of Square Cash can be identified by unique $Cashtags rather than phone number or email. Simply get your friends’ $Cashtags and send them money instantly with just a few taps. This way to identify users will also be a great help for the arrival of businesses on Square Cash. The service allows businesses to accept payments with a fee of only 1.5%, meaning that a considerable amount of revenue is retained.
Some of the world’s largest non-profit organizations are taking advantage of $Cashtags. Wikipedia, (RED), and The USO are among those already using Square Cash.
Anyone can post their $Cashtag in the form of “http://ift.tt/1y3Sseo; for an easy way to accept payments. Square assures its users that data is protected with PCI-DSS level 1 certification and has fraud protection in place to stop unauthorized charges.

Before we continue, let's get a couple of things straight: this is the DROID Turbo (model number XT1250), a souped-up version of the Moto X 2014 that's exclusive to Verizon in the United States. It's ostensibly a sequel to the DROID Maxx from 2013, and like almost all Verizon-branded devices, it has a locked bootloader. No custom ROMs for the poor DROID Turbo. And this is the Moto Maxx (model number XT1225), the exact same phone released without the Verizon branding or a locked bootloader, and currently sold only in Latin America.

When the device launches around the world next month, the HTC One M9 will have multiple themes accessible. Owners of the device also have the option to extract qualities from photos to compose a personalized theme. Taking things even further is the HTC Themes site that was launched today. The site provides users with the ability to change wallpapers, colors, icons, sounds, and font. Specific elements of a theme can be changed while others are left alone.
There is also the social aspect of HTC Themes. Users can bookmark themes from around the world to see what they like. An HTC, Facebook, or Google+ account is required to start using the theme creator.

Developer Chris Lacy has announced the release of Action Launcher 3.3. This latest update adds a new open source API that developers can use to match theme colors to live wallpaper automatically. The color theme carries over to things like the search box.
Lacy also added a new system for customizable gestures and shortcuts. Using this feature, users can setup gestures based on swipes from the difference screen edges, tapping the screen, or tapping the home button. The gestures can trigger a variety of customizable actions defined by the user like launching an app, locking the device, displaying notifications, or opening a search box.
The update includes several other smaller improvements like some animated color transitions, matching Android 5.1 home screen indicators, improvements to gesture detection so it works over icons, and a host of bug fixes.

It’s that time of the year where we prepare for another year of Android flagship releases, while older devices are discounted in an attempt at moving product. This makes things harder on smartphone addicts like ourselves who are trying to walk the straight and narrow, making every attempt at saving up for these brand new devices, but are constantly distracted by great deals on older hardware.
If you hurry, you can pick up a Motorola Moto G 4G LTE (1st Gen) for only $160 direct from Motorola. The 1-day sale discounts the device by a good $40. Specs for the device practically match those on the new Moto E with 4G LTE priced at $150. Whereas with the Moto G gains a slight advantage thanks to 720p HD display and LED flash, the Moto E has a bigger 2,390mAh battery vs the Moto G’s 2,070mAh (and is $10 cheaper). It’s sort of a toss up.

In any case, the choice is yours to make. Don’t forget that for $20 more, there’s also the Motorola Moto G (2nd Gen), although you’d be sacrificing LTE connectivity. Motorola’s sale on the 1st Gen Moto G 4G LTE ends tomorrow at 10:59AM CT. You’ll find it via the link below.

Recently, Google announced Android 5.1. Finally. While it’s mostly just a maintenance release, Google did change up some stuff and add some new features. We’re going to take a look at what Google did right in Android 5.1 to fix those pesky issues that popped up with Android 5.0.
With the Android 5.1 update, we got native HD Voice. Which means that if your carrier supports HD Voice, then you’re going to be using HD Voice. Of course, that also means that you need to be calling someone that has a phone on a carrier that both support HD Voice. While many of us don’t make phone calls anymore, HD Voice does make a HUGE difference.
While dual-sim smartphones aren’t popular here in the U.S., in developing and emerging countries where Android One is right now, its a pretty big deal. Prior to Android 5.1, Android didn’t handle multiple SIMs too well. Now it’s much easier to switch SIMs and networks, which is why we saw Android 5.1 available on Android One devices ahead of the Nexus family.
With Android 5.1, Google implemented a few speed improvements on the OS. And it’s really noticeable. If you’ve used the Nexus 6 on Android 5.0, then on Android 5.1 you’ll definitely notice the difference. Not only is the Nexus 6 much faster but it’s also smoother. It also appears that internet speeds are faster, at least on WiFi. Using Speedtest, I was able to get faster speeds on my home WiFi than I got on Android 5.0 and on other Android devices.
Google introduced us to Priority mode in Android 5.0 this past fall. Google decided to do some changes to Priority mode in the Android 5.1 update. One of the big changes in Android 5.1 is that you can now switch to Priority or None, and set it for 1, 2, 3 hours etc. But you can also set until your next alarm. It’s a good feature to use when you’re going to bed, so you don’t get disturbed.
With Android 5.1, you get better security on your device. So if your device is lost or stolen, it’ll stay locked until you sign in with your Google account. This happens even if someone attempts a factory reset on the device. Currently this is only part of the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 that is shipping with Android 5.1. To enable the feature, you’ll need to secure your lock screen, and then be signed into the device with your Google account.
Google also enhanced the quick toggles for Wifi and Bluetooth. Now you can tap on the down arrow for WiFi and see all of the networks around you. You can also quickly jump into more settings. But the ability to jump between networks without going into the Settings app, should make it easier for some.
Google made some changes, they weren’t all the ones we wanted though. Many of us are still waiting on Google to bring back the silent mode. They didn’t. But now when you are watching a video, listening to music, etc., and press the volume button, you can hit the bell on the side to get to the ringtone volume. Like I said, they made some changes, but not all of what we wanted.
As we stated above, the Android 5.1 release was mostly a maintenance release. It was mostly fixing bugs, but it did also bring in a few new features, mostly the ones we mentioned above. We’ll likely see a new version of Android at Google I/O in May, which will be released in the fall. So it’s more than likely that we’ll see more features at that time.

Ransomware is nothing new, but according to a new report from security researchers Trend Micro, cyber criminals in Asia are using a hybrid form of malicious tactics that utilizes ransomware and catfishing to lure victims into private chat rooms, convincing them to conduct explicit and sexual acts on camera and then extorting those users for upwards of $1,000 each at the highest amount. It’s a method of cyber attacks that has garnered the term “sextortion” due to the nature of how cyber criminals are able to steal money from mobile users, but there’s more involved than just luring people into private chat rooms and convincing them to do things on camera so they can record those activities.
According to Trend Micro, it starts with criminals posing as attractive females on Facebook and other social media sites by creating an entire fake profile, otherwise known as catfishing, and then convincing men to enter into a private video chat. The report mentions that various chat apps have been used but most commonly Skype is the app of choice because it has the capability for voice calls, images, texts, and video chats all wrapped into one. Once the chat takes place, the victims are convinced by the attackers that there is a problem with the audio and that they need to install an android app to fix it. This is where the ransomware comes into play, as the installed application allows the attackers to gain access to the mobile user’s personal contact list and other information, which they then use to extort money in exchange for keeping the recorded video sessions private.
Failure to pay up results in a threat of sending the content to the entire contact list and/or uploading the video to YouTube, exposing these individuals for doing something that could be potentially damaging to their reputation. The report states that some gangs of cyber criminals were able to obtain as much as $29,200 in one month, which displays that this method of cyber crime is lucrative and could cause it to become more mainstream. Although there is no report of these types of problems being introduced in the U.S. on a widespread scale, if it’s possible for cyber criminals to make quick cash overseas in large amounts over a short period of time, the issue could easily spread to other regions. It also serves as a good reminder that engaging in these types of activities will likely not result in a good ending. Even further, it’s a great reminder not to install random Android applications you have no way of validating as non-threatening.

Hunting for a new apartment can be a daunting task. But with the internet and now smartphones, it’s become much, much easier. You can even use Google to help find apartments in the area you want to move to. But there’s also a bunch of apps that will help you find that perfect apartment, and we’re here to talk about those apps.
With Apartment Finder, you can find apartments that are available in your area. You can also find out exactly where that apartment is, using Google Maps from within the app. It also lists features an amenities as well as prices and floorplans. So you’ve got everything laid out right there.
Similar to Apartment Finder, Rent.com will also find apartments for you and also list features, amenities and so much more. Rent.com’s app will also send you a $100 reward card after you move in. Which is pretty neat of them, probably thanks to using their app.
Lovely claims that they have the largest list of apartments and homes that are for sale and rent. They also work with 50+ data providers, so they know they have the most up to date listing on each property that’s listed in the app, making it easier to find that dream apartment that you’ve always wanted.
At Apartments.com, you can search for apartments in your area, as well as by price, by the number of bathrooms and bedrooms. Making it easy to find the perfect place to stay. They also show all the pictures associated with that apartment building so you can see what the place looks like, as well as floor plans.
Zillow Rentals is a great app for finding both apartments and homes for rent. Otherwise, Zillow Rentals as pretty much the same features as these other apps. Allowing you to see pictures of the house or apartment, floor plans, as well as amenities that come with the place. However, the UI is much easier to use than a lot of these others.
HotPads is actually a location based apartment search app. You can find apartments, homes for rent and homes for sale all with the same app, while a lot of these others want you to use a separate app when looking for a home.
Apartment Guide is a pretty popular service for looking for an apartment to move into. They have a ton of great features in the app, including share a listing. Also email the leasing office or call them straight from the app. Which always makes things more convenient.
Trulia is another popular app for looking for a home or apartment to rent. And it is tablet optimized, which is a pretty big deal. As with most apartment hunting apps, you can see the prices as well as features and amenities and floor plans for every apartment and home that is listed.
Figured we’d throw this in for our friends up North in Canada. This app will find just about every apartment that’s available in Canada and tell you everything you need to know about them.
With Zumper, you can find the perfect apartment or condominium to rent anywhere in the US. From New York to San Francisco. It also has some pretty advanced search filters, making it easy to find something you want in your price range.
