Android Distribution Updated for August 2015, Lollipop Jumps to 18%

Google took the month of July off, but today, went ahead and updated the Android OS distribution numbers for August.

In the two months since they last updated, Lollipop has seen a sizable jump from 11.6% to over 18%. Other than that, there hasn’t been much movement. KitKat barely moved up to 39.3% (from 39.2%), while Jelly Bean (37.4% to 33.6%), Ice Cream Sandwich (5.1% to 4.1%), and Gingerbread (5.6% to 4.6%) all dropped.

Chrome Beta for Android Updates to V45 With Custom Tabs, Updated Media Controls and Bookmarks

Google is pushing an update to Chrome Beta (v45.0.2454.21) this afternoon that introduces a couple of tweaks, along with a feature called “Chrome Custom Tabs.” Chrome Custom Tabs are better explained by Google here, but basically they allow customization in Chrome tabs by developers (toolbar color, enter/exit animations, custom actions to overflow menu). We’re still waiting for the update to arrive, so once we have it, we’ll see if we can’t show you a better visual representation of Custom Tabs.

The new build updates media playback controls and the bookmarks interface, and also fixes bugs.

What’s New

  • Chrome Custom Tabs
  • Updated media playback controls
  • Updated Bookmarks interface
  • Better logging for feedback reports
  • Barrels of bug fixes and performance improvements.

Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ Renders Have Arrived

This past weekend, @evleaks posted the above press renders to his Twitter account. They are of the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+. Not only do we get a solid look at what to expect from the exterior, but Evan also posted along a few specs for the Galaxy Note 5.

According to the tweet, we may see the Galaxy Note 5 feature a 5.66″ QHD display, Exynos 7420 processor, 4GB of RAM, 16MP back-facing camera, 5MP front-facing camera, and run Android 5.1.1 at launch. One thing missing from the list is a microSD card slot, which aligns with previous reports we have posted.

As we can see from the renders, the Note 5 looks similar to the Galaxy S6, but of course, is larger and features a S-Pen stylus. The S6 Edge+, on the other hand, is really just a larger Galaxy S6 Edge.

We are coming up on August 13, the date Samsung has scheduled to unveil these two new devices in New York City. We will be on-hand in NYC to bring you all of the coverage.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 on Sprint Gets Update With Stagefright Fix, Android 5.1.1 Too

The Sprint variant of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is getting an update today that introduces a fix for the Stagefright security flaw that shocked the Android world last week. To date, this is the first phone to get this fix that we are aware of, though you should expect a whole bunch of other updates to arrive over the next few weeks.

The update weighs in at around 615MB, so we’re talking about a substantial update here that also brings the phone up to Android 5.1.1. The full changelog is below.

  • Android version 5.1.1, Lollipop OS Upgrade
  • Message Waiting Indicator fix
  • Security fix (Stagefright)
  • Misc. bug fixes.

As a recap, the Stagefright bug allowed someone with your phone number to send you an MMS that when played (potentially without you even knowing in the background) could access all sorts of private information. It affects most Android devices, and unlike most security findings on Android, is actually quite serious.

We can’t help but applaud Samsung and Sprint for pushing this out. They managed to beat Google, who has yet to send any sort of patch to any of its Nexus line.

This Video is Funny, If You Like Laughing at Apple Fankids

What happens when you load up a fake iPhone with Android, tell people that it’s running iOS 9, and ask for their reactions? You get the best of Apple fankids talking about how everything is awesome because Apple made it. It’s the best kind of comedy for smartphone nerds, just like when Jimmy Kimmel has people react to the “new” iPhone that is really just last year’s iPhone. People say ridiculous things because in their minds, Apple can do no wrong and always does everything right.

Why is this better than Android? “I dunno, Apple is so chill,” says one of the participants. This version of Android on a fake iPhone is also apparently so much better because it’s “just a lot faster and smoother.” Mmhmm, I’m sure it is. Even an admitted “Samsung fanboy” in the clip is amazed by its beauty (poor TouchWiz). But in the end, at least one person says that this is the best because “I just think Apple is always better.” And that’s that.

Reservations Open for Liquidmorphium Turing Phone, Starts at $610

Turing Phone, known as the world’s first liquid metal-frame smartphone, is now open for reservation. Liquid metal, you say? Turing Phone is comprised of Liquidmorphium, a new metal “stronger than titanium or steel,” that is unbendable and dissipates shock more efficiently than what you see from your standard smart device. Not only does Turing Robotic Industries (TRI) promote the device’s unique look, but also touts security of the device as a headline feature.

The Turing Phone deploys end-to-end decentralized authentication for establishing secure networks to exchange data. Did I mention it features a IPx8 waterproof rating, too? IPx8 is a submersible rating, allowing for up to 30 minutes of immersion at 30ft/10m. As for internals, the device features a Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, NFC, LTE connectivity, 5.5″ FHD display, 13MP rear-facing camera, 8MP front-facing camera, 3,000mAh battery, 3 different storage options (16/64/128GB), and runs Android 5.1 with a “Æmæth UI” skin.

With its unique look and list of specialty features, we are sure you want to know the price. The 16GB model can be purchased for $610, 64GB for $740, and 128GB for $870. You can also choose a colorway that best suits your tastes, with Cardinal, Beowulf, and Pharaoh all available through the reservation process.

Right now, there is no official release date for the phone, and do note, this is a reservation process, not a pre-order. TRI isn’t taking your money just yet.

Sound fancy enough for you?

Here are Moto Maker’s Options for the Moto X Pure Edition (2015)

The Moto X Pure Edition is set to launch in September here in the US, but if you want to get a head start on the many ways you can customize the device through Moto Maker, the below image can help.

As shown, there will be four leather options, four wood options, and 10 CSR + Pattern options. For leather, customizers can choose between Red, Natural, Cognac, and Black, while those fond of wood can have either Bamboo, Walnut, Ebony, or Charcoal Ash.

Accents for the device will also be available, with Silver, Dark Gray, Champagne, Red, Pink, Lemon Lime, and Royal Blue all being good options. Something new, which was not available on last year’s Moto X, are differently colored Anodized AL frames. There is Silver, Dark Gray, and Champagne. You will also be able to choose between a White and Black frontside.

The Moto X Pure Edition starts at $399, capable of running on any US carrier. A few of these customizations will likely bump up the price of your phone, but in the grand scheme of things, it will still be a killer price for a flagship device.

Will you be customizing your very own Moto X Pure Edition when released?

Amazon Echo Now Available at Staples, Priced at $179

The Amazon Echo is now available through Staples, priced at $179.99, the same price you can get it on Amazon for. If you are a frequent Staples buyer, than you can benefit from the company’s 5% back for Rewards Members, plus free shipping. Although, Amazon has Prime shipping, so it’s doubtful shipping is a deal breaker.

Echo is Amazon’s voice-powered assistant, perfect for answering most of your questions and playing your favorite tunes. She can be an egg timer, storyteller, and even give you the latest sports scores. Although, I have found her ability to answer questions quite limited. She can give you the population of Paris, France just fine, but she can’t answer the population of Mexico City, Mexico.

If you own an Echo, how do you like it? I find myself using it as a kitchen timer more than anything.

OnePlus Co-Founder Talks NFC Backlash, Another “Amazing” Phone Coming Later This Year

OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei, sat down with USA Today over the weekend for a short interview that touched on a number of subjects from the company’s early beginnings to its new phone and beyond. Two topics stood out to us, though – one as a response to the backlash heard over the company’s decision to leave out NFC in the OnePlus 2, and another that talks of a new OnePlus phone coming later this year that will be “amazing.”

Carl was asked about OnePlus not including NFC in the OnePlus 2 and why that decision was made. He said he thinks the “entire issue of NFC is overblown” and that “very few people are using” it. Because of that, they cut it out – “it’s as simple as that.” Expounding on the idea that no one uses it, Carl suggests that because NFC may not be a thing for another 12-18 months, that you won’t need NFC in a device today. He also mentions that in those 12-18 months, “people will have moved on to the next device,” which we are assuming means a OnePlus 3 or phone from another manufacturer that has NFC? That’s kind of an odd statement, if you ask me.

While I appreciate the honesty here, I can’t say that I’m exactly excited about that kind of approach. When your company’s motto is “Never Settle” and the tagline for your 2015 phone is “2016 flagship killer,” you are basically saying that your phone won’t have a feature that will likely be big in 2016, which you realize to be the case, yet still left it out. Because of that, you are also asking your customers to settle for the time being.

On a semi-related note, Pei did briefly touch on the subject of the near future, which includes another OnePlus phone. He said that it “may or may not be” higher spec’d than the OnePlus 2 and that the first words out of his mouth when seeing it were “Holy sh*t that’s going to be my daily driver.” Umm yeah, so the OnePlus 2 is great and all, but the next phone might be even better.

I don’t know what to tell you anymore.

But hey, hopefully we’ll have a OnePlus 2 review unit soon! Maybe.

AT&T Now Offers a TV/Mobile Bundle, $200 a Month for 10GB of Shareable Data Among 4 Devices

AT&T announced the first offering of its kind this morning, coupling mobile and TV bills into one single plan. The plan attempts to make paying your bills more simple (and cheap), but for the GB hungry wireless consumers, it may not be very beneficial. For $200 a month, customers can get up to four TVs connected to HD and DVR-ready TV service, grouped with four phone lines with 10GB of data shareable among the lines. According to AT&T, this deal could save consumers $600 or more annually.

The TV service is powered by DIRECTV, with four different tiers available to consumers at varying promotional prices. For the first 12 months, the plans range from just $50 a month, all the way up to the “DIRECTV Premiere or U-verse U-450″ for $125 a month.

Customers who group a TV and eligible phone plan into a single bill are gifted a $10 bill discount, according to AT&T’s press release. If you keep both services for a full year, that’s an annual savings of $120 a year.

ATT_DTV_Infographic_946x432_ENG

In select markets, AT&T is even offering customers the ability to group high-speed Internet. Starting at an additional $30 a month, users can access 6Mbps Internet, all the way up to 45-75Mbps speeds for $50 a month, on top of the $200 TV+Phone plan.

As you can see, AT&T is wasting no time in highlighting its DIRECTV service, as the two officially merged back on July 24. You can expect to see plenty of promotion for this plan in the near future.

Share your thoughts below on bill bundling, and if you think 10GB among four smart devices is viable for American families.

Sony Announces Two Phones Worth Paying Attention to, the Xperia M5 and C5 Ultra

At the stroke of midnight, last night, Sony announced two new phones for “emerging markets” that I think many of you hope make it far beyond and into bigger markets. The two phones are the Xperia M5 and Xperia C5 Ultra. I would suggest to you that the Xperia M5 is the more appealing of the two because of its supposedly great new camera and smaller body, but the C5 Ultra’s non-existent side bezel almost looks too clean to be real – except that it is.

Each phone sports a 1080p display, thin body, MediaTek octa-core processor, and some unique camera setups. Sony is referring to these as “super mid-range” type phones, but they really could pass as flagships for the most part.

It’s unfortunate that most of us will never have a chance to buy either, because they really do sound quite appealing on a number of levels.

XPERIA M5-2

Xperia M5

As a fan of the Compact line from Sony, I can almost guarantee to you that I will somehow, some way, try to find this phone. If I have to import an Xperia M5 from across the globe, I will.

Why do I say that? Because this phone sounds like the ultimate package for those of us in need of a device that isn’t extra large. The Xperia M5 features a 5-inch 1080p display, 2.0GHz MediaTek Helio X10 octa-core 64-bit processor, 3GB RAM, 16GB internal storage (plus 200GB SD card support), 2600mAh battery, Android 5.0 (what?), IP65 and IP68 water/dust rating, and a brand new 21.5MP camera that is supposed to be bonkers. Bonkers as in good. Oh, it also has a 13MP front camera.

The camera on this phone has a 5x Clear Image Zoom, shoots 4K videos, and is supposed to be insanely fast to focus and snap photos. Sony is talking up the camera on this phone like it could be one of the best in the business, which is something we should expect from the company that basically supplies everyone with smartphone camera sensors.

The phone should also last up to 2 days on a single charge and again, is the phone for those in need of a normal sized phone.

02_M5_gold_group 13_M5_black_group 15_M5_white_group XPERIA M5-4 XPERIA M5-3

Xperia C5 Ultra

The C5 Ultra, as you can see below, is quite unique in that it has almost zero side bezel. It’s a crazy look for a phone, and one that should be an interesting test to see if we really need this little bezel in a phone.

Other than its unique look, the C5 Ultra sports a 6-inch 1080p display, 13MP front and rear cameras, 2930mAh battery, 2GB RAM, 16GB storage (plus 200GB SD support), Android 5.0, and a 1.7GHz MediaTek MTK6752 octa-core 64-bit processor.

It’s a big ol’ phone, but with that little bezel and a 8.2mm thick frame, it might not be terrible to use.

Each phone is arriving “selected countries across emerging markets” starting in mid August.
