Moto X+1 benchmarks suggests it will come equipped with a Snapdragon 801 processor

Moto X Touchless Control DSC00742

The tech community is on high alert, digging up any any information on Motorola’s soon-to-be-released Motorola X+1, the company’s upcoming 2014 flagship. We’re certainly excited about it. Last year’s model was seen by some as carrying sub-par hardware (at least by 2013 flagship standards). But if recent leaks and rumors hold true, this year’s model could finally offer something to rival current flagships.

A new Geekbench benchmark was uncovered, uploaded back on August 6th showing a device listed as “Motorola XT1097.” While the benchmark doesn’t reveal much, it does show a Qualcomm 8974 processor clocked at 2.45GHz. Now, it doesn’t specifically list a “Snapdragon 801″ processor, but because the regular Snapdragon 800 caps out at 2.36GHz (typically 2.26GHz), it suggests the Moto X+1′s MSM8974 is, in fact, the 801. This is the same processor found in current flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S5, HTC One M8, and LG G3.

One of the must-have features in last year’s Motorola Moto X was its always-listening Google Search functionality. Motorola had to put precious R&D into developing their own custom X8 chip with a low-power always listening core. With the Snapdragon 801, Motorola has a little less work to do. This functionality is already built in.

Android Headliner: It’s Finally Hit Me; Waterproof Smartphones are More Than a Gimmick

Galaxy S5 AH 02.-29

When I reviewed the Xperia Z last year – Sony’s first in a longline of waterproof Android smartphones – I enjoyed the novelty of being able to rinse it in the sink or show off to friends, but ultimately I was fairly unimpressed with the Xperia Z. I wasn’t exactly taken with the Xperia Z’s washed out display and noisy camera, but overall it was a decent offering, however because of those shortcomings I overlooked its party trick of resisting water. However, over time I have come to realize that waterproofing a smartphone is actually a genuinely good idea and it’s about we should see more of them.

Sony’s first attempt meant that there were flaps, flaps everywhere. Over the headphone jack, over the microUSB port and over the microSD and SIM card slots. Sure, these are obviously necessary, you’d have be an idiot to think you could expose a USB port to water and have it work flawlessly afterwards. Since then thugh, Samsung entered the arena with their Galaxy S4 Active and now the Galaxy S5 which is waterproof without being bulky and only has one flap at the bottom of the handset (well done, Samsung!). Still, I kept on wondering why people like Sony and Samsung weren’t giving up making their phones impervious to spillages, a drop in the tub or just you know…dropping it down the toilet. Then, it hit me.

On holiday in Greece, I saw a group of girls – of various ages, obviously a family on holiday together – with what I assumed to be either a white Sony Xperia Z of some sort or a Galaxy S5. This family was playing in the pool, taking photos of each other on said smartphone and having a great time. They were laughing, trying out different poses and (as I would assume) thanks to the free WiFi sharing pool selfies with their jealous friends. As much as I genuinely love technology because, well, I’m geek it’s heartwarming to see a family just enjoy technology like this. They clearly didn’t care why it worked, they just cared that they could have fun in the pool and I’m guessing throughout their everyday lives not having to care about it getting soaked in the rain, or spilling drinks on it.

Today, it’s an understatement to say that our smartphones are big parts of our lives. I’m not “big” on social media, and frankly a good chat over a few pints will always be preferrable to spending hours on social media (however, connecting with our readers on Google+ continues to be one of my greatest ways to relax). Even so, my smartphone is the hub of my “digital life”. I use it to access thousands of songs, it hooks up to my HiFi in the office, it feeds my smartwatch, I connect with family and friends with it, it wakes me up in the morning and it helps me tame my email. If I were to get my Nexus 5 wet though; that’s it, game over. I’m good at keeping my technology clean and out of harm’s way, but being on holiday around beaches (which dustproof devices like the Galaxy S5 and Sony Xperia Z2 also protect against) with sand that continues to get absolutely everywhere it makes me think; should I be worrying about my phone like this?

It’s about time we saw more mainstream devices go waterpoof and dustproof like the Galaxy S5 has. Sure, the plasticky exterior isn’t too appealing, but Samsung’s displays are fairly hardwearing and we have to hand it to Samsung, the Galaxy S5 is waterproof without reminding you every five minutes. I had a fetching Copper Gold Galaxy S5 to try out when it launches and I enjoyed it, it was grippy in the hand, charging it wasn’t too fiddly and thanks to said charging port being the only thing covered by a flap the Galaxy S5 was quietly waterproof. Personally, I don’t like Samsung deivices and that’s not something I’m going to apologize for but the Galaxy S5 is a great device and LG, HTC (especially HTC), Motorola et al should all take after the Galaxy S5. Our smartphones are central to our everyday lives these days, and we shouldn’t have to worry about them getting wrecked every time we spill a beer, slip up while playing Fruit Ninja in the toilet or when taking family memories while having a dip in the pool or by the beach.

Android Epic App Battles: Facebook VS Twitter

AH Epic App Battles 1.0

This is the battle of two of the top social networks, Facebook and Twitter. Although we all know that we really enjoy Google+ the most right? Between these two older social feeds though, which deserves to be the crowned king? The social champ? Both have been around for years, but they also both offer a fairly different form of social experience. Facebook gives you access to far more stuff in your feeds when it comes to content. Twitter is a lot more simplistic. It all pretty much boils down to what you’d rather read doesn’t it? I myself stick to Twitter more because I prefer the short posts. Sometimes Facebook is good for those longer status updates with more information though, because sometimes you need all that information. Lets find out some differences between the two and then decide on a winner shall we?

FacebookAH Facebook logo 1.0

Bring up a conversation about social networks and Facebook is probably the one that will be the most recognizable among a widespread group of different people. Lots of people use it, old or young, and it has been around for years. It has grown into a behemoth but its growth has slowed quite a bit over the last couple of years. Chances are most of your friends are on Facebook, and probably your family too. Sometimes that’s the problem. You may only like seeing those family members at annual gatherings because you might only be able to tolerate them for a few hours out of the year. Facebook is more than just posts about status updates and what kind of sandwich you had for lunch though, or what your new cat looks like(insert cat photo and videos here), it’s a social gathering place where you can go and read up on the people that are closest to you.

Check up on friends and family, read the news from pages you like, watch videos, play games… today Facebook pretty much does everything. People have concerns about Facebook’s privacy policies, yet we use it anyway. You can post albums of photos to Facebook so you can share tons of memories with friends and family in an instant, or you can see the other photos that people have shared. Everything pretty much comes together in a nice cohesive little timeline. You can post to people’s walls, send them a private message now with Facebook messenger, and once upon a time you used to be able to poke people. Facebook is full of its charms and features and could probably very easily be considered the most popular. You can like people’s posts, share them if you want to spread the word, comment on posts and so on. Yes, Facebook does a lot. However sometimes it might feel like just a little bit too much. Facebook is free to use just like every other social media service, and you can use it just about every single platform. You can also create your profile and fill it with all kinds of information and details about yourself, or of course in the name of privacy you can leave it as blank as possible.

TwitterAH Twitter 1.0

Twitter is a social network, but it’s much more of a different beast than Facebook. You can still create profiles and fill in a few key details, but on the scale that people can do with their profiles on Facebook. Your profile also takes on more of an RSS feed style filled with tweets instead of a timeline full of photos and videos, public messages and news shares, or comments about how great Friday night was with that embarrassing picture that you’d hoped would just go away. Twitter is more about quick snippets of information, unlike the traditional Facebook status update that spans a small portion of the first chapter of a novel. Twitter’s status updates(tweets)are limited to 140 characters max, so things are kept light and to the point. Twitter is great for following your favorite news sources, friends, or other celebrities/companies/games/movies etc. and getting the latest of what’s going on in their lives. You can reply to people’s tweets just like you can comment on someone’s Facebook post, and you can re-tweet something if you want to share it to your own immediate Twitter feed so others that follow you will see it. Twitter doesn’t support games, although you can share videos to Twitter and view them right in the feed. Twitter is a lot less clunky then Facebook, but that’s exactly what some people are looking for. If you enjoy following people and getting the latest updates on what’s happening or being the first person catch a breaking story, Twitter is the social network for you.

So what’s the better app for being social and catching up on the latest? Both apps have their respective strong points, and equally their shortcomings. Facebook is packed with more content, Twitter however seems to be better at delivering the latest information about the stuff you care about. When it comes to social networks, it’s really all about what you want out of them. Would you rather have all of the bells and whistles and be able to share, post, and chat about everything under the sun? Or do you just want to get your status updates, quick and easy, and be on your way?

Top Android Homescreen August 8th Edition: Coast

Coast Home_original

It’s time for another custom homescreen, and as always we grab our picks from mycolorscreen simply because we find some of the most amazing customizations there. This weeks pick is just as easy to apply it as it is to view it, and boy is viewing it easy because it just looks that good. This one sticks close to the simplistic and minimalist approach to customization, and we’re fine with that. Once in a while a little more of a complex theme is a nice thing to have, but the simplistic homescreens just look so elegant that they’re hard to overlook, and that’s exactly what we see going on here, with matching color themed buttons for phone, messaging, and email, and the search bar that sticks to the same color scheme. The homescreen was followed up with a fairly transparent widget in the middle displaying the weather and carrying a few more app shortcuts, and basically it all just comes together for a nice cohesive display.

This custom homescreen is called Coast, and is another custom homescreen created by 21MaRcO12, who we have featured on here before. You can apply this theme in one of two ways, so whichever you prefer you can grab the files for either method. You can apply the custom homescreen look to your own device with either Themer, or with the use of Zooper widget pro. Zooper Pro requires a payment of a couple bucks, but it’s well worth it for the customizations you can do with the app. Themer is free, and so are the files for download, although Themer is a complete home launcher replacement where as Zooper is just widgets that you place on your homescreen but you can still use your launcher of choice. You can grab the download files of your choice from the source link below, and make sure that if you like the homescreen theme, to “Zoom” it and hit the Love button and show 21MaRcO12 some appreciation in creating this theme.

Meta Aims To Turn Heads With Their Upcoming Meta M1 Smartwatch

rose-gold-table

Smartwatches are coming out of the woodwork like crazy as the year continues and Meta, a company that used to be known by the name of MetaWatch is coming out with their latest offering soon(which you can pre-order by the way)called the M1, and it has a certain flare to it that so far none of the other options have been able to provide, at least when it comes to the style factor. The Meta M1 arguably won’t be the type of device you should look for if you want bright vibrant displays on your smartwatch with lots of colors or you want it to perform all sorts of tasks and carry multiple functions and capabilities. It is however something you should consider if you’re wanting a smartwatch that can provide you with notifications and will look sleek and stylish while wearing it.

The Meta M1, besides having a rather unique look to it, comes in multiple colors and style options all ranging in price and starting at $249. Once again, this is a smartwatch that is going to have less functionality than some of the other options you will find out there, but the materials and design are premium and there will undoubtedly be less of these worn around than the Gear 2 or the Moto 360 when it launches, so the nicer styles will come along with a bit of exclusivity. The design speaks high end, to a degree, and sends a message that the wearable you chose to slip onto your wrist is not just another device that you’re connected to, but also a fashion statement of sorts. The designs were also handled by Nokia and Vertu designer Frank Nuovo, so you can see why the prices are what they are. Part of it comes from the hand crafted design and expertise from someone who specializes in this kind of thing.

You’ll be able to grab the Meta M1 in seven different styles, starting at $249 and going up to as much as $399, depending on the type of band and watchface you pick. The different styles are categorized into different tiers, with M1 Color, M1 Core, and M1 Limited, and as you can probably guess the Limited set of styles is the most expensive. They’re also the most unique looking and will definitely catch some people’s attention. All the devices will ship starting in October, so if you want to get your hands on a pair you can head to the Meta Website to place your pre-orders.

Samsung said to launch autonomous Gear Solo at IFA

samsung gear live first look (7 of 19)

Samsung may be looking to announce more than the Galaxy Note 4 at IFA 2014. “Industry sources” claim the Korean giant is ready to announce a new smartwatch. This wearable device would be unlike most current devices of its kind. Named the Samsung Gear Solo, it is meant to stay true to its name, holding no need to tether to a smartphone.

Named the Samsung Gear Solo, it is meant to stay true to its name, holding no need to tether to a smartphone

Previously rumored with the same moniker, the Gear Solo is said to sport its very own USIM (universal subscriber identity module) card slot, allowing it to connect to cellular networks. This is where the main downfall lies, as the device is said to only support 3G and not 4G LTE. Regardless, the device’s connectivitiy will set it aside from all other Gear smartwatches, making us suspect the price will also be driven higher.

No other details are given by these “industry sources”, but we believe this will not be an Android Wear device. Mainly because Android Wear is not designed to be a standalone product. We can assume this smartwatch is all about Tizen, Samsung’s very own operating system.

Gear2Neo-62

I can see it becoming a very good tool for those with active lifestyles. Carrying your smarpthone around for running sessions would no longer be a necessity, for example. Those hiking trips would suddenly become lighter, in a setting where you want to carry as little as possible.

These are details we will probably learn more about next month, though. The Samsung Unpacked Chapter 2 event is scheduled for September 3rd. While these anonymous sources claim the device will be displayed on the 4th, we believe that is some kind of confusion.

LG will soon provide an official bootloader unlock solution, the Android ROMing community rejoices

LG-G3-Battery

Bootloader unlock policies are always a sticky situation. On one side you have the Android modding community wanting full control over the devices they’ve purchased, to do things like modify the software and flash custom ROMs. On the other side are manufacturers who’s hands are usually tied thanks to carriers making a locked down bootloader a requirement for phones operating on their network.

Recently, we’ve seen a shift in the tides as OEMs attempt to circumvent these restrictions, whether it be with their official bootloader unlocking software (a la HTC), or official “developer edition” devices that come out of the box with bootloaders pre-unlocked and ready to flash the custom ROMs like CyanogenMod or Paranoid Android.

LG is one of the bigger Android OEMs who has chosen to distance themselves from the issue, shying away from talk of unlocked bootloaders or developer editions when it comes to more strict carriers (like Verizon or AT&T) — until now. Senior XDA member Wolfgart mentions in a post on the developer forum that he received an email from LG stating that they are working on a software solution that will not only appease ROM flashing addicts, but avoiding stepping on the toes of carriers. Here’s the email:

“Thank you for your feedback regarding bootloader unlock and

we are sorry for any inconvenience and disappointment that have been caused by lack of support for bootloader unlock on the latest LG smartphones.

We are already aware of many developers’ requests and opinions on bootloader unlock.

So we have been preparing a server to provide safer bootloader unlock.

Also, we are internally discussing the target model and the time of providing bootloader unlock.

However, it will take some more time due to the technical restrictions, security issues, and the policy of mobile carriers.

We deeply apologize that we are unable to support bootloader unlock right now and would like to ask for your kind understanding.

We will let you know more specific information when the support policy for bootloader unlock is decided.

Now we should note, there’s no specific timing on when we can expect LG’s bootloader unlock to arrive, or even which devices will be supported. While we imagine flagship devices like the LG G3 will be supported, it might not be until the LG G4 or G5 that we see this implemented (so don’t go holding your breath). Still it’s a step in the right direction and a victory for those of us who’d like to enjoy a little more freedom on devices we’ve spent a small fortune on.

Line Messaging App Wants To Grow Their Popularity Stateside

Line

No matter what your favorite messaging app is, chances are that you could potentially be swayed to try another one. Either by a family member or by your best friend who swears this new messaging app that he’s(or she’s)been using is the best one out there and you and all your other friends should switch. Despite what you think about the messaging app you already use though, another one is poised to draw you in and compete for your loyalty. Line, is a messaging app that has been around for some time in plenty of regions and just like many other messaging apps out there, you can send messages to friends for free as long as you have data. Line isn’t new here in the U.S. but it is nowhere near as popular here as it is in its home country of Japan.

Line, unlike most other chat apps is probably the most widespread in terms of features. Instead of focusing on just one thing or a couple of different functions, Line seems to have taken bits and pieces of inspiration from various popular chat applications and combined them all into one. It’s most memorable and perhaps most popular feature however might be its large selection of stickers that Line implies you can use to literally have an entire conversation. The Line mascots we’ll call them, are recognizable far and wide in Japan and are part of what has made them more popular than anyone else. Line thinks they can bring that same level of popularity over to the U.S. although they have some pretty heavy competition from other chat apps here like WhatsApp and Facebook messenger.

Line offers more than just stickers that portray just about every single emotion we can conceive, it lets users make free calls and use video chat, and brings in similar features that can be found in other popular apps like a private photo feed, and messages that disappear after so much time. Line is cross platform and works on basically any other mobile smartphone OS too, so whether your friends use Windows phone, Blackberry, or iOS, Line has a compatible app on every platform so everyone can chat together. Line is more than just messaging though, they’ve become a well known brand in Japan, where you can find throngs of their merchandise all over, modeled after the cute cast of characters that makes up their entire sticker line that can be picked up in-app. It’s this sort of mass marketing itself as more than just an app that has made it grow so large. Whether Line will blow up just as huge here in the states as they have in Japan remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure, the app does offer some compelling features.

Android Game Of The Week: Duet

Duet (2)

There was a time where I was quite addicted to a game called Super Hexagon. It filled my free time during work, it consumed my thoughts during my off days, this also might have been amplified by the 10 other people I was in constant competition with trying to best each other’s high scores. I haven’t played another game that I was THAT into, until now. Duet is actually a little similar, at least it feels that way. The gameplay is not really that similar, but all the same it is just as addictive. It has a great atmospheric soundtrack and a cool soothing narrative voice that speaks to you throughout the game. This is definitely a game best enjoyed with headphones, although not required in any way.

Duet debuted on Android through the Humble Mobile Bundle 6 just recently, and also launched on the Play Store later the same day. The basic goal is to guide these two little balls,(one red and one blue)which sit stationary on a circle and you must rotate it so that you can avoid the upcoming obstacles of blocks, rectangles and other things that appear to be in your way. Accidentally running into one of these obstacles with either of the balls will make it explode, and although this will reset you back a bit to an earlier point in the stage, when this happens it does have some pretty cool visuals as the balls appear to burst, splashing the color all over the area where you hit. It almost looks like splattered paint. The visual of watching this is what’s cool and graphics wise it was just very well done.

The nice thing is that once you smash into any obstacles that area is marked by the color splatter thus alerting you to the last known place where you couldn’t avoid your obstacles. It serves(for me at least)as a reminder of where I hit last time so that I might avoid it the next play through, almost triggering a remembrance of which direction to turn so that I can pass by. It also can serve as a motivator to do better, since you’re basically staring your failure to progress further right in the face. There are eight chapters to play through and 25 achievements to unlock. There are also four additional chapters of bonus challenges, and daily challenges to play as well. You’ll also be able to unlock survival mode if you pick up Duet “Premium” version through the one time IAP. The game is complete with Google Play Games services so you can also sync your progress across devices through the cloud save. You can grab the free version of the game here, but you can also still pick this up in the Humble Mobile Bundle 6 too, which comes with a handful of other awesome games.

FCC continues to express frustration with Verizon data throttling

Moto_X_Back_Verizon_Logo_TA

When news broke that Verizon would start throttling its unlimited data customers, the FCC came forward in calling out the carrier’s actions and the possible repercussions. Verizon responded by explaining the data throttling it intends on doing. By throttling the data of affected customers, those on tiered data plans are less likely to be harmed by network that is clogged. The carrier also feels that there is such a small amount of customers being affected and that other carriers are already doing the same. Well, the man in charge over at the FCC is still very unhappy.

Tom Wheeler, the FCC’s chairman, made it clear that Verizon should not be proud of itself for following others. He said “’All the kids do it’ was never something that worked with me when I was growing up and it didn’t work with my kids.” Furthermore, Wheeler feels that this is a technological issue and a business issue running directly into one another. He was very clear in saying that Verizon should not be doing this strictly for a profit.

By throttling the data of customers on an unlimited plan, the likelihood of those customers switching to a different plan increases. That is exactly what many carriers want. If they get data-hungry customers to a tiered plan, they are making money in two ways. The first is from the size of the tiered plan itself. A customer that uses a lot of data will want to have a big pool to work with to avoid overages. So, as usual, they are profiting from a the monthly plan. But then they can hope customers go over their plan and get charged overage fees.

Rove Is A Digital Journal That Auto Logs Your Day

Rove

Journals and diary’s are something that people have been keeping for a long time, and as we have moved forward and technology with us, so to have journals and diary’s. We recently wrote about another journal application called Journey which lets you store your journal entries digitally within the app inside of your phone or tablet, and it even had some pretty cool little features to it that make it one of the better applications in that space. Now it has a contender, called Rove, that might actually be somewhat better, although we suppose that decision lies in the hands of the user and not ourselves, since it will come down to what you want in features.

Rove is such an app that basically logs information about you the way you would do yourself by writing it down in a journal, like location, the dates, and the pictures you might take when at certain locations during use of the app. It then takes this logged information and can present it back to you for viewing later on if you’re feeling particularly nostalgic and just need a dose of some good memories. It does everything pretty much automatically, minus the photos part, you have to handle that. As for all of the information though, Rove can log your entire day so it can feed it back to you in an enjoyable Journal like feel, and you can even share the best of all those logged moments with friends.

All the data is kept 100% private according to the team at Rove, and they state that only the user can see their personal data. Throughout all your logged memories you can add notes and curate the photos so to make each entry as memorable as possible. Perhaps you don’t keep a journal, simply because you just don’t want to lug around an actual journal and a pen, plus there’s the act of having to write all kinds of stuff down right? Well if you like the idea of a personal journal but don’t care to write up everything about where you’ve been and when you were there, Rove can at least handle a good portion of those tasks for you, and you can simply fill in the blanks. Rove is free, and you can grab it from the link here and start logging your adventures.
