LG G4 is “World’s First” to Get Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update…in Poland

LG announced this evening that its flagship G4 is the “world’s first” to receive the update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. They must be talking non-Nexus devices of course, because Google has already begun rolling out the update to a handful of Nexus products. Still, since LG says the update begins next week, they are technically first outside of Google’s phones and that’s something.

Keep in mind that they aren’t talking about the LG G4 in the US or UK or Korea – they are talking about in Poland. They did this same thing last year with Lollipop and the G3, then managed to take months to get the update out to any major market.

Whatever it takes to grab them firsties, I guess. Let’s see if anyone can top them in a meaningful market.

LG BEGINS ANDROID 6.0 MARSHMALLOW ROLLOUT STARTING WITH G4

LG Customers in Poland to be World’s First to Receive Android Upgrade

SEOUL, Oct. 15, 2015 ― Owners of LG Electronics’ (LG) G4 smartphone will be the first in the world to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS. LG G4 owners in Poland will begin receiving their M upgrade beginning next week with other markets in Europe, Asia and the Americas to follow.

The latest update to the Android operating system offers a number of features designed to enhance the user experience, such as:

  • Permissions have been simplified with greater control of the information applications can access, not only at the installation stage but any time
  • Silent feature for sound and vibrate mode as well as a Do Not Disturb mode to block all sounds or only alarms and notifications
  • Doze Mode which shuts down background processing of certain apps when the phone is not in use, to significantly prolong battery life

“By working closely with Google, LG has been able to bring Android 6.0 to the G4 ahead of any of our competitors,” said Chris Yie, vice president and head of marketing communications for LG Mobile Communications Company. “While speed alone isn’t an indicator of great service, it does go a long way toward giving consumers the confidence that LG is committed to its existing customers first.”

Details of the Android M upgrade schedule and affected models will be announced in individual markets.

HTC One A9 Outed on French Carrier, High-Res Images and Handful of Specs Revealed

The HTC One A9 will be announced at a press event next week in New York, but before we get there, don’t be surprised if we learn every last detail about the device. We had previously seen it in leaked pictures of dummy phones and in the hands of blurry-cam operators. Today, though, we get 100% clean imagery of the phone and some specs, thanks to Orange, a wireless carrier in France.

According to Orange, the phone will come in at least two colors, steel gray and white/silver. Assuming their pricing is accurate this early, we are looking at €599.90, which seems insane! After all, this is basically just a mid-range phone. HTC can’t be thinking flagship pricing, can they? Let’s hope Orange is incorrect.

As for specs, we are looking at a 5-inch FHD (1080p) display, 13MP rear camera, 4MP front camera, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Unfortunately, that’s all these early listing have included.

But hey, we have clean pictures of this iPhone clone new HTC One!

Watch Google Play Music’s 360° Video

As we already knew, YouTube will be featuring more and more 360° videos for everyone’s enjoyment. To help make people more aware of it, Google has released a 360° video to promote Google Play Music.

These videos are technically “interactive,” meaning that regardless of if you are on a smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer, you can look around in the video and see everything that is taking place.

On the desktop, you will need to use your mouse to scroll around a shot, but on tablets and phones, you can simply tilt your device to look around.

You can experience the video up top on your computer, or find the video on your smartphone and try it out there.

ZTE Intros Lease-to-Own Program for Smartphones

ZTE, the China-based OEM who does not hold too much of a marketing presence in the American market, announced a lease-to-own program for new smart device buyers this week. This program allows buyers of a ZTE device to pay for it over time, making devices more affordable.

This program is usable on devices such as the Spro 2 Smart Projector and Axon Pro. Naturally, usage of this program will rely somewhat on credit score, and ZTE has implemented SmartPay, a way for wishful ZTE owners to receive immediate approval for the lease.

According to the the press release, “If approved, simply select the ZTE device you want, make your first payment at checkout and make scheduled monthly payments thereafter.”

If you would like to upgrade, and your lease is up-to-date on payments, simply return the device to SmartPay in good working order, which will cancel the lease. Then, go ahead and select a new device.

When signing up, the devices are purchased at the off-contract pricing, and will be available on ZTE’s US website “soon.”

ZTE Introduces New Lease-to-Own Option for Smartphones and Mobile Devices

ZTE customers can now get a mobile device and pay for it over time

Richardson, Texas – October 14, 2015 – ZTE USA, the fourth largest smartphone supplier in the U.S. and second largest in the no-contract market*, today introduced a lease-to-own payment plan for customers who want to pay for their phone or other mobile device over time and spread out their payments to make it more affordable. This lease-to-own payment option is provided through SmartPay ™ Leasing Inc. and will be available online for all customers beginning soon at www.zteusa.com.

Lease-to-own is available for unlocked devices such as the recently launched Axon Pro and other mobile devices such as the ZTE Spro 2 Smart Projector.

“We are introducing leasing options because we believe advanced mobile technology should be available to everyone. We also want the experience of purchasing and using a ZTE device to be easy for any consumer,” said Lixin Cheng, CEO and chairman of ZTE USA. “How customers want to pay versus the amount they are comfortable paying are equally important – and ZTE can provide the best of both worlds.”

Leasing options for credit scores of all types

With SmartPay, you can get an immediate approval to lease ZTE devices. If approved, simply select the ZTE device you want, make your first payment at checkout and make scheduled monthly payments thereafter**.

No long-term contracts

The length of a lease plan is determined when you apply and can range from 6 to 24 months. Once all payments are made, the lease is complete and you own the device. You can also pay off your lease early without any penalties or future fees***.

Upgrade your phone when ready

If you’re up-to-date on your monthly payments you can cancel your lease at any time and upgrade your device by simply returning your current device in good working order to SmartPay. Once your phone is received your lease is cancelled and you’re free to get the new device you want.

*Strategy Analytics, North America Handset Vendor Market Share, Q2 2015

**$0 to 25% of your lease amount could be due when you complete checkout, a debit card is required.

***BuyOut Fees from 3.5% to 20% may apply depending on the lease-to-own payment plan you qualified for. This option is not available in NJ, MN, WI, and WY. Customers in NJ, MN, WI, and WY are offered a 12 month lease plan which renews annually. Your lease plan may be cancelled at any time. An early termination fee may be applied. You cannot own leased items in NJ, MN, WI, and WY. Instead you can cancel your lease at the end of the term, or you can renew at a lower cost.

Verizon and Motorola are Announcing New DROID Phones October 27

Verizon just invited us to a an event that is taking place on October 27 in New York Ckity. Any guesses as to what the focus will be? Yeah, you already know. It’s for new DROID phones, of course. In fact, the invite says that Verizon and Motorola will unveil DROIDs, as in, multiple DROIDs.

Sources of ours, along with a handful of other leaks, have suggested for a while now that we should expect two new phones:  DROID MAXX 2 and DROID Turbo 2

The DROID MAXX 2 is largely thought to be a DROID-branded version of Motorola’s mid-range Moto X Play, while the Turbo 2 will be a new flagship device.

The Turbo 2 will likely sport a 5.5-inch QHD display, Snapdragon 810 processor, 3GB RAM, 20MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, Turbo Charging, and Android 5.1.1. The new MAXX 2, assuming it is like the Moto X Play, will have a 5.5-inch FHD display (1080p), Snapdragon 615 processor, 2GB RAM, 21MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, and massive 3630mAh battery.

We’ll be at the event.

Excited?

AT&T Announces Plans for NumberSync, One Number for Your Multiple Devices

This morning, AT&T announced plans to launch NumberSync later this year, a network-based service that allows multiple connected devices to share the same phone number. For example, if you have a smartwatch or tablet, those devices will be able to receive calls and texts, even when not connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Of course, those connected devices will need to feature wireless radios, which not all of them do.

Said to launch a little later this year, with more supported devices expected around the holiday season, NumberSync allows your friends and family to call the same number they already have to reach you, even if you don’t have your smartphone handy. If you leave your phone at home while out on a run, but have a smartwatch that features wireless radios, you will be able to receive and place calls, as well as messages. Or if you are on the couch playing with your tablet, and your phone is in the bedroom, you will still be able to take that call on the tablet without having to go fetch your phone.

AT&T states that NumberSync will soon be the norm for devices on its network, meaning you will likely hear about NumberSync from AT&T for quite some time to come. The idea itself is great, but AT&T did not announce exact pricing for each device to have its own connection on the network. It was also not disclosed if data is included, or just texts and calls, which require no actual “data.”

As more details are made available, and what devices we can expect to support NumberSync, we will let you know.

Is this a service you could see yourself utilizing? Sometimes it would be nice to leave the smartphone at home, as long as you can still contact people in case of an emergency.

Tip: Check on Your Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P Shipping Date Through Google Play Too

When is my Nexus 6P or Nexus 5X shipping? Do you guys know anything? What did Google say? Those questions keep showing up in our inbox on an almost daily basis, because Google hasn’t really given us a specific date since announcing their new Nexus phones a few weeks ago. And seriously, we don’t know other than they should begin shipping at some point in October.

With that in mind, a couple of clever redditors noticed that if you go into Google Play’s “My Account” section and check on order history there, you can see more specific information.

Google may have separated Google device sales from Google Play and into the Google Store long ago, but your Google purchase history is still your Google purchase history. And thus, your Google Store orders will show in your Google Play order history.

Some are seeing exact dates that their phones should ship, while we are seeing more broad ranges like “2-3 weeks.”

Here is an order status from my account on Google Play:

nexus 6p shipping date

Keep in mind that your Google Store order history page also has estimates. In fact, our estimates in the Google Store for each device are more exact than through Google Play, so be sure to check on both.

Songkick App Now Rocks Material Design and In-App Concert Ticket Purchasing

Songkick, an app all about concerts in your area, received a major update this week on Google Play, bringing with it an updated Material Design look, Spotify music importing, and the ability for in-app concert ticket purchasing.

With the redesign, users will have a more fluid experience, complete with sliding columns, pull out drawer, and color matching notification area. To do this, the developers of the app rebuilt Songkick from the ground up, allowing for more stable performance.

For those who use Spotify, the importing of your favorite songs and artists can be done in mere seconds, allowing Songick to identify concerts in your area that will be of interest to you. The same can be done with Google Play Music, Facebook, and your on-device music library.

Lastly, and possibly the most important piece of the update, is not only the ability to locate and discover concerts in your area, but to purchase tickets for them while you are mobile. While you won’t find every venue and concert available, Songkick states that they are working to bring more events to the service for ticket purchasing.

In a city like London, we now sell tickets directly for a third of all upcoming concerts – meaning that you have access to over 1000 events in just a few taps of the app, and our ticket coverage throughout the UK and US continues to grow exponentially.

The update is now live on Google Play, so go check it out.

T-Mobile Brings Back “10 Gigs 4 All” Plan, Priced at $120

Back by what T-Mobile calls “popular demand,” the #10Gigs4All plan is now available for those in need of the Magenta. This plan is made for families or groups of four, providing 10GB of high-speed data for each line with connected service, non shareable between lines. T-Mobile’s tagline for the plan is, “Family members should share lots of things. Just not data.”

Each line is allotted 10GB of high-speed 4G LTE data, on top of unlimited texts and unlimited minutes. For pricing, it works pretty simple. You have the first two lines, priced at $50 each. To add another line, it’s $20. The fourth line you add is free, bringing your total to four lines with 10GB of data each for just $120. Of course, this does not include any device installment plans you have, taxes and regulatory fees, etc.

As an added benefit, do note that each line comes with Data Stash, unlimited music streaming from select services, and zero cost for data overages.

According to T-Mobile’s website, this offer won’t last long, so those who want to sign up should call T-Mobile or head into their local Magenta store.

Blackberry Priv Pre-Registration Opens, Offers Up More Specs

As of this moment, you can make your odd infatuation with the Blackberry Priv somewhat official. The Canadian company opened up pre-registration for the Android-powered slider, which is really just a way for them to gauge interest before selling it. By signing up, you will supposedly be the first to know when this “revolutionary” phone is available for purchase. (Or you could just read Droid Life, because the chances of us telling you before they do are pretty high.)

Thanks to the pre-registration page, we also now know some new specs, like the actual screen and battery sizes. According to this official Blackberry sign-up page, the display will fall in at 5.4-inches and is indeed a dual-curved screen, sort of like the Galaxy S6 Edge. The battery is a whopping 3410mAh, which is quite large, and the camera uses a Schneider-Kreuznach lens. For those not familiar with Schneider-Kreuznach, some quick research tells us that these lenses are popular in Kodak and Samsung digital cameras, but have also been featured in some high-end cameras. Finally, the short list of specs mentions that the Priv has “extraordinary audio quality.”

We still don’t know exactly when this phone will arrive, but the source link below will get you in the know.

OnePlus Teases “Powerfully Beautiful” on October 29 With a Giant “X”

OnePlus has begun teasing some sort of event that will take place on October 29. We would imagine that they will show off a new phone, more than likely the rumored OnePlus X (or OnePlus Mini depending on the day), which has been rumored and discussed on numerous occasions over the past couple of weeks, outside of the confirmation from OnePlus that one will arrive before the year is up

Through a post on Twitter this morning, OnePlus has shown us a lit up “X” along with the hashtag #PowerfullyBeautiful and “See you October 29, London” line. Yep, a giant lit up “X.” OnePlus X? Probably, assuming this isn’t OnePlus just buying into hype created by the internet to half-troll us all. But yeah, it seems like a teaser for the OnePlus X/Mini that has been seen through certification houses like the FCC and TENAA. We even have pictures of it here.

What is the OnePlus X? Well, we expect it to be a smaller take on the company’s OnePlus flagship. Benchmarks and other sources show it as having a 5-inch 1080p display, MediaTek MT6795 64-bit octa-core processor, 2GB RAM, 2450mAh battery, 13MP rear camera, and maybe even NFC (not holding breath on that one). So it still should be a fairly high-end phone, only in a smaller body than the OnePlus 2.

Interested? Or are you not interested in doing the OnePlus song and dance any longer?
