The Nvidia Shield Tablet is getting a brand new update today, which brings it forward to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop. While this is Android 5.0.1, this will be the Shield Tablet’s 2.1 software upgrade, bringing in some new features that are specific to the Shield Tablet itself. Android 5.0.1 is primarily about bug fixes or at least it has been for virtually every other device that has gotten that version of the software, and we’re not seeing anything different here as Nvidia states this is just a minor release with a few bug fixes and updates. The Shield tablet does get a few nice new features that are specific to the Shield tablet though as part of the Nvidia software upgrade, like new effects in the Camera Awesome application.
This update should also improve the responsiveness between apps as part of the system performance enhancements that have been made, so users should see an improvement in general UI and things should just feel more fluid, fast, and smooth overall after the update is finished. We mentioned a couple new enhancements to the Camera Awesome application, and those enhancements will see users have access to some cool new creative effects for stills and videos, adding to the overall experience of Camera Awesome.
Other additions that come along with this update are OpenGL 4.5 support, localization improvements, and Nvidia has brought back the Shield Power Control Menu based on community feedback. So basically, you asked for it and Nvidia listened. After having to deal for sometime without the power control menu it’s back and ready to serve. Nvidia has also made some memory optimizations in this update which will mostly affect memory intensive apps, like high-end games for example. The update to this newer version of software should be rolling out to your devices as we speak so check your software updates from the settings menu and see if the OTA is waiting for you. You might also see this pop up in the status bar up top, and like with all updates, even minor ones, we recommend that you have at least 50% battery life before you proceed with trying to download the software and install it. If you’re an owner of the Nvidia Shield Tablet, how do you like it so far and what do you think of the Lollipop software versus the Android Kit Kat build that was launched with the device?

Everyone has their own little thing they like to do to get into the holiday spirit, and for some people, that little thing is taking $700 retail units of their Samsung Galaxy S5 an stuffing them into piles of snow. That’s right, Samsung’s using the Samsung Galaxy S5 as props for their company snowman.
It is, quite honestly, one of the creepiest snowmen I’ve ever seen. The eyes move in an unnaturally unsettling way. The heart beats as if it’s about to jump out of the snowman’s chest. And what snowman has a heart, anyway? Just creepy.
But, it is a good reminder that the Samsung Galaxy S5 is water resistant and can be used for things like this. I mean, I personally wouldn’t stuff my phone into a bulge of freezing water, but hey — if that’s your thing, then go for it! The festive video rests above.

Samsung has been all over the news lately, company’s financial results have been under the spotlight lately, but they are also battling Nvidia in court and are getting ready to announce a bunch of devices in the coming weeks / months according to leaks. We’ve seen a ton of Samsung-branded smartphones leak lately, but not many tablets, well, today’s leak is about to take care of that “problem”.
Samsung’s upcoming SM-T116 tablet has appeared on two listings, it popped up on Zauba’s (Indian import and export site) import log and on GFXBench listing. According to the available information, this is a 7-inch tablet which will be powered by Spreadtrum’s sc8830 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. This tablet will also ship with 1GB of RAM and will come with Android 4.4.4 KitKat pre-installed with Samsung’s UI on top of it, of course. Judging by the specs, this could actually be Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Tab 4 Lite, though we’re just guessing, of course.
According to the Zauba listing, the import price of this tablet is Rs. 6,313, which is about $99. This pricing also points towards Galaxy Tab 3 Lite’s successor. Considering that this device appeared at Zauba’s listing, it shouldn’t be too long before we see it launched, especially if you consider the fact that the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite was launched in January 2014. That tablet came with Marvell’s SoC on the inside, while it seems that this one will ship with Spreadtrum’s chip, which is interesting. Either way you look at it, this will be yet another extremely affordable tablet on the market, though there are a lot of solid, affordable options available out there already.
Samsung did say that they’ll significantly cut back on the amount of devices they release, but we’ve been seeing a lot of Samsung listing lately, only leaks though, but still. Anyhow, do you think that Samsung should significantly trim down their smartphone and tablet portfolio, or do you think they’re on the right path as far as that goes, but they have to change something else? Let us know what you think on social networks, as always.

2014 is drawing to a conclusion, and 2015 is a week away; how are the US carriers lining up against one another for the coming twelve months? First, let’s take a quick look at 2014 as it’s been a remarkable year from a competition perspective. We’ve seen almost one hundred and fifty pricing actions or promotions from AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint, excluding the extended promotions – this is more than double the 2013 number. We’ve seen early termination credits applied to bills, tablet data for life, double data promotions and no cash down equipment plans. Where the carriers have calmed down is in changing and restructuring the plans; instead, they’ve relied on promotions without having to change their prices (for the most part).
For 2015 and something that we are all interested in is how the carriers are working on their networks, because most of us are happy to pay good money for a service if that service delivers what we are paying for! Of the two main US carriers, AT&T and Verizon reached their 2014 coverage targets but have and will continue spending money on improving their coverage and, critically, capacity. T-Mobile USA and Sprint are still working on catching up with AT&T and Verizon in order to reach the same LTE coverage and capacity. There’s another complication here in that we are expecting the carriers to continue pushing and improving their VoLTE coverage. VoLTE, or Voice over LTE, is a method of carrying voice calls over the LTE data network). It’s beneficial to the carriers because LTE networks are far higher capacity than 3G and 2G networks, so fewer masts are needed to carry voice calls. The technology is great for customers because VoLTE call quality is improved over 2G and 3G plus it keeps the device connected to the 4G network, so reduces the need to move up and down the network technologies: some devices do not elegantly move up to LTE from a 3G network! 2015 is also the year when we are expecting cross-network VoLTE support. We are also going to see ongoing development following the AWS auctions.
Sprint are something of an unknown going into 2015. The business needs to grow: by Q3 2014, it had lost almost 600,000 customers. We’ve seen positive noises and changes in the business and the new management are serious about playing to win the US market. Of course, the other carriers are not going to let Sprint take the fight to them but will continue to keep up the pressure. AT&T and Verizon are not likely to be as offer-driven as Sprint and, also, T-Mobile, but we’ve seen that they will happily use double data promotions. I’d say that Sprint are the network to watch out for, and I’d expect them to try something a little different from the norm. What of our readers? Are you planning to change your carrier in 2015? Are you happy with the deal you currently have? Let us know in the comments below.

Samsung is having a lot on their plate at the moment. Company’s profit is significantly dropping lately due to weak sales, U.S. is basically the only market Samsung managed to avoid a drop in sales in the last couple of quarters. This is not the only thing Samsung has to worry about at the moment though, the company is battling Nvidia in court. What’s this all about? Well, the US ITC (United States International Trade Agency) is about to start investigating Nvidia considering that Samsung has filed complaints last month against that US-based company. Nvidia has allegedly infringed upon some of Samsung’s patents in the GPU department.
This is actually Samsung’s response to Nvidia’s actions against the Korean tech giant. The two companies have been going back and forth for a while now, they’ve sued each other in federal district courts in Virginia and Delaware already. “This is typical legal ping pong,” said David Shannon, chief administrative officer at Nvidia. The reason why Samsung decided for this move is the fact ITC usually moves faster than other civil courts and if someone is found guilty, they usually ban the company from importing and selling their products in the US. David Shannon also added: “Nvidia remains focused on ensuring that we receive fair compensation from Samsung for using our technology in Galaxy phones and tablets”.
These lawsuits for infringing patents are becoming really irritating to people who love mobile technology, mainly because of Samsung and Apple who have been going back and forth for a long time now. We’ve been hearing about these two companies suing each other all over the place, luckily we’re not getting much of these lawsuits lately (with the exception of OnePlus, Cyanogen and Micromax’s ‘love triangle’). Nvidia has also filed lawsuits against Samsung and Qualcomm earlier this year because those two companies allegedly infringed on seven Nvidia graphics chips patents.
I’m sure this legal battle will take some time to end and we’ll hear more about it soon, unfortunately. I just hope they wrap this up as soon as possible. Your thoughts?

Samsung is having a tough year, after a long time of dominance and constant profit jumps, the company has faced profit dips in the last couple of quarters this year. Their profit is down all over the world, except for the US. Samsung’s profit took a 50% dive in China, for example, just to give you an idea what we’re talking about here. This Korean tech giant is trying to turn things around in various ways, from redesigning their devices to cutting back on the amount of devices they produce. This company has gotten a really bad reputation over time for making cheap looking and feeling handsets as well as rather poor and bloated software, the company is trying to change that, at least as far as the design goes. Samsung has introduced a bunch of premium built smartphones in the last couple of months, but the software side of things is still a problem for many users.
That being said, Samsung has also been opening “Experience Stores” all over the world in recent years and it seems like their poor financial results are making the company close some of them. Samsung Experience Store in London is permanently closed. This store was located at the Westfield Stratford City shopping center and was quite large, this was one of the biggest Experience Stores in the UK. “We remain fully committed to the operation of the remaining nine Samsung Experience Stores across the UK, and wish to reassure our customers that those stores will not be affected by this decision,” said Samsung to The Verge. It seems like Samsung wants to cut down on retail costs by making this move.
Samsung is still the number one smartphone manufacturer in the world and will stay on top of the pile, but if their sales keep on dropping at this pace, the company will face bigger issues sooner than later. They really have to find a way out of this mess by listening to what people want and improving in certain areas in order to gain good reputation once again and stop the sales decline.

Xiaomi is all over the place today, we’re getting a ton of reports / rumors regarding this Chinese smartphone OEM. Some images leaked earlier allegedly showing one of Xiaomi’s upcoming handsets, though we don’t know which one. A rather interesting rumor came our way today as well, touting Xiaomi’s very own operating system, although that rumor is rather far-fetched, it’s always interesting to hear something like that. It’s time to cover some Xiaomi tablet rumors.
MiPad is Xiaomi’s tablet offering, it’s really solid Tegra K1-powered tablet which offers some solid specs and is very affordable, as are all Xiaomi devices. Alleged MiPad 2 surfaced on Weibo (China’s social network) revealing its specs as well, so let’s check it out. According to this leak, the MiPad 2 will feature a 7.9-inch retina display, just like the current-gen tablet by Xiaomi. 2GB of RAM and 16GB of in-built storage will also be a part of this device and judging by the picture, the tablet will run Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Xiaomi’s MIUI on top of it. Nvidia’s Tegra K1 chip will get replaced by Intel’s Atom chip clocked at 1.8GHz.
I really don’t think this leak is legit though, there’s no “Mi” branding on the tablet itself as far as I can see and this thing looks far different than the current-gen MiPad, it also looks too… well, ordinary, it’s plane-looking. Xiaomi’s MiPad tablet was launched back in March, so the company is due to an upgrade in Q1 2015, but I really don’t doubt this is the tablet they’ll launch, it just doesn’t look like it. Perhaps this is a reference hardware of some sort of something. We’ll hopefully get more information about the upcoming MiPad in the coming weeks and might be able to put this into perspective.
Anyhow, do you own, or did you have the chance to play around with Xiaomi’s MiPad tablet? Do you think this is its successor? Let us know what you think in the comments down below or via social networks, we’d love to hear from you, as always.

NVIDIA is certainly hanging on to its reputation for speedy device updates, at least when it comes to the company's flagship Tegra tablet. The SHIELD Tablet is receiving its first post-Android 5.0 update, to the 5.0.1 build that's only a couple of weeks old in AOSP. But the gaming company isn't content to add the few behind-the-scenes changes from Google, and has added a few new tricks of its own, including one highly requested feature from previous versions of Android.
NVIDIA SHIELD Tablet Lollipop 5.0.1 Update Adds A Custom Power Menu, HD Camera Effects, And More was written by the awesome team at Android Police.
We’ve been getting a lot of Xiaomi news lately. The company had a great year and they’ve recently stumbled into some problems in India when Ericsson sued the company for allegedly infringing on eight of their patents. Xiaomi got a partial ban for selling devices in India (though the full ban will start in January) and the company has to resolve those issues with Ericsson as soon as possible in order to continue doing business as usual. We’ve also seen some Xiaomi’s alleged handsets leak recently, but nothing concrete on that front.
We did, however, receive a new rumor from China which is really, really interesting. Xiaomi’s MIUI OS is based on Android, we all know that, but this rumor claims that Xiaomi has been working on its own operating system for a while now. According to this rumor, the new operating system will be called “MIOS” and it will look more or less exactly like MIUI. Keep in mind that this is just a rumor, we have no way of verifying any of this and quite frankly it look a bit far-fetched. Xiaomi is doing great at the moment and it just doesn’t make any sense for the company to move away from Android, but if they actually go through with this, this OS will certainly be Linux-based.
Samsung did something similar with their Tizen OS, but we all know how that went, it didn’t go as well as planned for this Korean tech giant. There are many obstacles to something like this, especially the app ecosystem, it’s hard to create a whole new ecosystem from the ground up and make it succeed, even a huge corporation like Samsung is having issues doing that. Xiaomi is a really young company, this Chinese smartphone OEM was founded back in 2010, and I don’t believe they have the resources to make something like this happen and succeed in the end and do believe it’s far better choice for the company to stick with Android for the foreseeable future. What do you think, do you think that Xiaomi should stick with Android?
