And Here is the Non-Camo Version of AT&T’s Galaxy S6 Active

After showing us supposed photos of the yet-to-be-announced Samsung Galaxy S6 Active on its way to AT&T, @evleaks has returned this afternoon with a fresh photo of the device. This time the camouflage is gone in favor of a much more traditional back which Evan refers to as being a bit more “tasteful.” I don’t know that there is anything tasteful about a rugged phone, designed to withstand the elements through blocky protective gear, but it is at least a little less obnoxious.

The Galaxy S6 Active feels like it should have been announced weeks and weeks ago, yet still isn’t official as of June 2. I do know that AT&T has teamed up with Spartan Race to launch a new “exclusive” Samsung Galaxy device at events in Breckenridge on June 13, Dallas on June 20, and Palmerton on July 11 and 12. If I were a betting man, I’d put money on the phone being announced within the next 11 days.

Interested in this year’s Galaxy S6 Active? If it’s at all like the last two Galaxy Active devices, it should be every bit as good as the regular Galaxy S6, only as a rugged beast.

T-Mobile Extends #NeverSettle Trial for Verizon Customers to June 26

T-Mobile’s #NeverSettle campaign, aimed directly at taking customers away from Verizon, is being extended to June 26. As recently tweeted by T-Mobile’s fearless leader John Legere, “…customers want better. They want T-Mobile!”

The Never Settle trial is pretty straightforward. If you are a Verizon customer, head on into T-Mobile or their website, select a plan, port your number, and give the carrier a spin for 14 days. If you don’t like it, port your number back to Verizon, reactivate your account, and turn in the device you chose on T-Mobile.

If you do end up liking it, T-Mobile will pay your early termination fees or any unpaid phone balances with a prepaid Visa card. They have a limit on how much they will pay, though, which is $650. At that time, you will also trade-in your old Verizon phone.

Any Verizon customers try this campaign out? On that same note, please, let’s not get carried way in the comments about how Verizon is this and T-Mobile is that. We already know, folks. Stay classy.

Android M Feature: “Peeking” is the New Name for Heads-Up Notifications

A good word to describe Android M would be “control.” Android M may not give users the big, sweeping UI changes and feature introductions of Lollipop, yet instead focuses on giving users more control over their phones. From controlling app permissions to the way settings and quick toggles show, the Android team is really letting your Android phone be customized to your liking.

Another area that they are giving you additional control over can be found in the “Apps notifications” area in Sound & Notifications. Here, we’ll find a new option in addition to blocking and priority toggles that were first introduced in Lollipop. It’s listed as “Allow peeking,” with peeking as the new name for Lollipop’s heads-up notifications. That’s right, the new name for heads-up is “peeking.”

With peeking control, you are able to turn off the notifications that pop down from the top of the screen over the top of your current screen (as seen in the GIF above). Previously, if a developer built in heads-up or peeking notifications, you were at their mercy and had to deal with them if enabled. Now, the control is in your hands.

Ahhh control.

Developer Finds Way to Enable WiFi on G Watch R

It was reported late last month that G Watch R owners would eventually receive WiFi support via an update later this year in Q3. Thanks to a bit of hackery and wizardry, a third party developer on XDA has successfully flashed necessary files over from LG’s Watch Urbane to get WiFi up and running on the G Watch R. According to the developer, everything appears to be working well, with minor hiccups performing voice commands.

In order to get WiFi running on your own G Watch R, you need only follow a few somewhat simple steps. Although, do note you will need a custom recovery and the required zip files to get this working properly. If you already have a custom recovery installed, you need to make a backup of your current system, install a custom kernel, reboot back into recovery, flash a provided zip file, and then reboot the device. Yup, it’s that easy.

Much like all of those custom ROM files we would post back in the day, please refrain from attempting any of these procedures unless you are comfortable with flashing custom recoveries and zip files.

Follow the below link to get started.

Motorola Atrix HD Owners Won’t See Kit Kat Update, Offered $100 Discount on Moto X as Apology

Sad day for Atrix HD owners on AT&T, as Motorola confirmed today that the company shall not be delivering a Kit Kat update to the device, instead, leaving it to fade into the history books on Jelly Bean. The last timeframe publicly made by Motorola for the update to roll out was for Q3 of 2014, and as you may have noticed recently, it’s now June of 2015.

But hey, it’s not all bad news. Motorola has issued an official apology on Google+, and to help all of you Atrix HD owners pick up a device running a newer version of Android, the company is offering a discount on a brand new Moto X Pure Edition. A Moto X Pure Edition starts at $499 on Motorola’s website, and if you are eligible, you can get one for just $399. If you don’t want a Moto X, Motorola is also offering a Motorola Whisper for $49.99, usually priced at $149.99.

So, are you eligible? Here is Motorola’s criteria for determining eligibility.

Any consumer who purchased an Atrix HD for use on the AT&T carrier network (excluding developer editions) is eligible to receive the coupon code. The consumer must provide a first and last name, a valid email address, last four digits of Atrix HD IMEI, and EITHER of the following: last four digits of Atrix HD phone number OR the Atrix HD 10-digit serial number.

Do we have any ticked off Atrix HD owners here? If so, shall you be taking Motorola up on their offer of a discounted Moto X, or shunning them altogether and going a different route?

Sprint Prepaid Adds “Rolling” Data for All Plans, Data Never Expires

Sprint announced this morning that all of its prepaid plans will now included “Rolling” or “Monthly Rolling Data,” which is just like AT&T’s Rollover Data and T-Mobile’s Data Stash. Well, at least in its basic form.

With Monthly Rolling Data, customers get to rollover any unused data that they paid for, making it available the following month. Where Sprint differs is in the length of time you get to keep your rollover data. AT&T gives you a month (30 days) and T-Mobile gives you a year, but Sprint says you get to keep unused data forever or until you use it. Sprint is also letting you max out at up to 30GB of rolling data.

Sprint’s Prepaid Rolling Dat (how many names do we have here?) are only available at Best Buy. There are three options that included unlimited talk and text, along with varying amounts of data depending on price. At $35 you get 1GB of data, and at $45 and $55 you get 3GB and 6GB of data, respectively.

For more info, head over to Best Buy’s site.

Giveaway: Win 1 of 4 IKEA Wireless Chargers from Droid Life!

Just before Google I/O, we told you that IKEA had begun selling their series of wireless charging pads, lamps, and other accessories in the US. We also told you that we may or may not have a few to giveaway, which as you can tell from this post, is about to happen.

After a quick trip out to the Portland IKEA, we came back with three extra single-spot charging plates (Nordmarke), along with a bigger three-spot charging plate. All will work just fine with your wireless charging-capable device, like a Galaxy S6, Nexus 6, or Nexus 5. They should look quite snazzy in your home as well, since IKEA built these to blend in with furniture, not look like a piece of cheap technology, which I would argue is the approach most wireless charger makers take.

We have four in total to giveaway. All you need to do is follow the steps in our Rafflecopter widget below. As always, you can do one or all of the modes of entry – the more you do, the more chances you have to win.

Ready?

SoundHound Announces “Hound” Personal Assistant App

Looking for a personal assistant app on Android outside of the combination of Google Now and Google Voice Search? SoundHound introduced an app today called Hound that wants to be just that. It’s currently an invite-only service, but if their promo video is to be believed, this might be a solid option, especially if it can really keep up with natural language the way it claims to.

Hound, as you will see in the video below, does the standard assistant stuff like tell you the weather when asked, place phone calls, send text messages, find directions, and check the stocks from your favorite companies. It can even tell you a song that’s playing in the background or let you launch interactive games, like Blackjack.

But where Hound could stand out, is in its ability to understand you when speaking naturally. By understanding the way you would normally talk or with criteria you would typically include when searching for something, Hound could accomplish complex tasks. SoundHound uses an example of a person asking where the Golden Gate Bridge is located, then following that question up with another to “Show me a pet friendly hotel near there with 3 or more stars under $200 excluding bed and breakfast.” Hound is supposed to be able to understand both context and details, so you could potentially run off a series of related questions and get back answers.

Hound is again, invite-only at the moment. To request an invite, either install the Android app or head over to the Hound website.

Report: Samsung to Launch ‘Galaxy S6 Plus’ in Coming Weeks, a 5.5″ Galaxy S6 Edge

According to SamMobile, Samsung is gearing up to launch a Galaxy S6 Plus device, simply being a larger Galaxy S6 Edge with a 5.4″ or 5.5″ display instead of the original 5.1″ display. In addition to a larger QHD Super AMOLED panel, the device is also reported to feature a Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor; not the Exynos processor found in all models of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

As for other specs, the S6 Plus is said to feature 32GB of onboard storage, and the same 16MP rear-facing camera as found in the S6 Edge. Right now, availability or pricing is unknown for the device.

To go along with this news, SamMobile reports that the Galaxy Note 5 is on track to be announced during this year’s IFA. The Note 5 is reported to feature either a 2K or even 4K display, coupled with an S-Pen and Exynos 7422 octa-core processor.

Would you be interested in a larger Galaxy S6 Edge with a 5.5″ display? Or maybe you are more interested in the Galaxy Note 5?

Ah, Material Design. It’s glorious. The latest high-profile app to receive a Material Design makeover is BlackBerry’s own BBM beta app for Android, bringing a UI more consistent for users running Lollipop on their device.

To gain access to this beta, you can sign up right here. Although, it appears to be full at the moment. But don’t worry, there’s a waiting list you can add your name to.

Deal: Spigen’s Nexus 6 Slim Armor is $4.99 ($25 Off)

Here is your deal of the day, assuming you own a Nexus 6. Spigen has (for whatever reason) slashed the price of their Nexus 6 Slim Armor case to just $4.99. The case normally runs $29.99, so you are looking at a $25 discount on a case that is both slim and protective.

Google Maps Adds Real-Time Transit Info to 4 New Metros, Route Option Summaries

Google announced today that Google Maps and its real-time transit info is now available in four new metro areas, but also that “relevant journeys are handily arranged and summarized in the app.” Google doesn’t want you to miss your ride as you guzzle that “last sip of coffee,” but should you, these new summaries will help you always find another option.

To see what the new summaries will look like, take a look at the images above.

As for real-time transit info, Google unfortunately, did not specify which new metro areas would start to see it. They did mention that they are also working with 25+ new partners to make real-time transit info a possibility in the UK, Netherlands, Budapest, Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle, though.

For those new to real-time transit info, just know that when it is live in your area, transit info in the Google Maps app shows live, with arrival times for busses, metros, and subway systems. As routes are cancelled or delayed, you are able to quickly make decisions on your best possible route.

Tough to tell if this is real-time action will arrive via update or behind-the-scenes, but I’m going with the latter.

LG Exhibiting 18″ Flexible Display Panel and 6″ Active Bending Panel at SID 2015

LG Display has set up shop at the 2015 meeting of the Society for Information Display (SID) conference in San Jose, showing off its latest advances in display technology. For those curious, LG Display will be exhibiting a few unique pieces of display technology, including an 18″ flexible display panel, capable of being rolled up to a radius of just 3cm without affecting any functionality of the display.

The company will also be showing off plenty of ultra-large OLED TV panels, but more importantly, LG Display will exhibit a 1.3-inch circular panel, a 5.5-inch curved panel (possibly the same one from the G Flex 2), and a 6-inch active bending panel. The circular panel could inevitably be found on a smartwatch sometime in the future, while the larger 6″ active bending panel could one day be found in smartphones.

To top off that excitement, the company has developed AH-IPS Plus, which is an advancement in AH-IPS technology for smartphones. This new technology, “improves transmittance by 20~30 percent by altering the liquid crystal material and UV alignment technology, creating a high-resolution display that consumes less power.”

If anymore exciting news comes out of SID, we will be sure to let you know.

LG Display Highlights Next-Generation Displays at SID 2015

Seoul, Korea (June 2, 2015) – LG Display, the world’s leading innovator of display technologies, will showcase the future of display technology at the 2015 Society for Information Display (SID) conference at the San Jose Convention Center from June 2 to 4.

SID is the world’s most respected academic association of the display industry, which is comprised of 6.000 leaders in the sector, including executives, academics and researchers, from all over the world.

Under the theme of Leading Technology, Great Design & Picture Quality, and Differentiation, LG Display will highlight its exclusive advanced technology and the company’s commitment to deliver the best value to customers.

In-Byeong Kang, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at LG Display, will give a keynote speech on “The Opportunities and Challenges Facing the Display Industry” on June 2. He will discuss the future direction of display innovation based on the fast changing IT environment with the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G mobile communications. He will also map out the future technology evolution of LCD and OLED displays and prospects for transparent and flexible OLED displays.

LG Display will present three invited technical papers on its cutting-edge research, including the fundamental technology of the world’s first 18-inch flexible panel; new OLED technology concepts for large-size Ultra HD OLED TVs; and Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) technology for large-sized LCDs among a total of 20 presentations it will conduct at SID 2015.

In addition, the 18-inch flexible OLED panel with a curvature radius of 30R, which can be rolled up to a radius of 3cm without affecting the function of the display, will be showcased at the exhibition.

The company will exhibit 55-inch, 65-inch and 77-inch UHD OLED TVs, which ushered in the era of large-sized OLED TVs, as well as other OLED products, including a 1.3-inch circular panel, a 5.5-inch curved panel, a 6-inch active bending panel and a 12.3-inch automotive display.

LG Display has emerged as the industry leader in the application of the touch embedded technology AIT, which is used in various smartphones and tablets as well as a 15.6-inch notebook display and a 7-inch automotive display. AIT represents a major advancement over In-Cell Touch technology, offering excellent touch functions and a differentiated design advantage with its ultra slim bezel.

The company has also developed AH-IPS Plus, an improvement on the conventional AH-IPS technology used in smartphones. The new technology improves transmittance by 20~30 percent by altering the liquid crystal material and UV alignment technology, creating a high-resolution display that consumes less power.

LG Display will have an exhibit section to demonstrate to visitors a comparison in power consumption between 5.5-inch FHD and 5.7-inch QHD smartphone displays using AH-IPS Plus with conventional displays of the same size and resolution.

The company will also show innovative next generation displays such as a 55-inch high-transparent LCD display with the world’s first 25 percent transmittance, and a 21.5-inch automotive display with 2,000R that can be integrated into the dashboard as a Central Information Display (CID).

In-Byeong Kang said “LG Display will strengthen its position as the world’s leading display company with such differentiated LCD technology as IPS and AIT, while OLED technology is playing a pioneering role in creating new markets. The company is committed to putting its best efforts into leading the next-generation of innovative display technology.”

Microsoft Acquires Popular To-Do List App Wunderlist

Wunderlist, the popular multi-platform to-do list app that seems to get better by the day, was acquired today by Microsoft. Add Wunderlist to the list of companies Microsoft can’t seem to keep their hands off in recent months, like Sunrise and Acompli, a list that shows company’s “ambition to reinvent productivity for a mobile-first, cloud-first world.”

According to Microsoft, nothing will change for now for Wunderlist users. The apps will remain free in all existing markets with Pro and Business prices staying the same.

Wunderlist, excited as ever because its founders are likely now rich, said that over the next few months they will introduce a “host of new features” and add new partner integrations. As you can imagine, with Microsoft behind them, Wunderlist now has a “massive wealth of expertise, technology and people” to pull from to continue to improve their to-do products even further.

Deal: Refurbished, Unlocked AT&T Galaxy Note 4 is Just $399 at eBay

Samsung probably has a Galaxy Note 5 unveiling lined up for some time in late August-early September, but that doesn’t mean last year’s Galaxy Note 4 isn’t still a heck of a phone (our review). In fact, me, the hater of all oversized phones, loves the Note 4. It’s one of those phones that is designed so well and feels so premium, that you can easily forget that it’s the size of a Smart car. It has an amazing camera, performs with the best of them, lasts well through an entire day on a single charge, and that display…that display.

If you are interested in the Galaxy Note 4, think about cruising over to eBay this morning to check out a deal on an unlocked, manufacturer refurbished model (SM-N910A) that will work on AT&T (T-Mobile for the most part, but is missing 1700 band)). Priced at just $399, you are looking at one of the best prices ever for a Note phone that isn’t really all that old.

The deal has been running for a day and is almost over, so be quick.

Verizon Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Get First Update With HD Voice, Photo Editor Tweaks

Verizon and Samsung have readied updates for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge this morning as software version VRU1A0D5. You would be safe in assuming that this is mostly a bug fixer, but there is at least one new feature in the photo editor.

That new feature is a drawing mode that allows you to drop over the top of photos using several different brushes, colors, thicknesses, etc. We received this feature back in early May on our international unit, so you should be familiar with it.

As for the bug fixes and tweaks, Verizon is moving buttons around in the HD Voice calling screen, Google Wallet now comes pre-loaded, and People Edge (GS6 Edge only) now has a visual cue on the home screen. The rest of the list of bug fixes can be found below for each phone.
