Rumor: Huawei P8 To Become Available In April And Feature A 5.2″ 1080p Display And 3GB Of RAM

AH Huawei Logo 1.5

Huawei was one of the biggest surprises in 2014, this Chinese smartphone manufacturer released a couple of really compelling products, like the Ascend P7 and Ascend Mate 7. The company put a lot of effort into delivering great hardware and has also revamped their Emotion UI Android skin, which resulted in a really positive experience here, on both the software and the hardware side of things. We haven’t heard much from Huawei in 2015, but it seems like the company is cooking something up.

According to the latest report from China, Huawei is working hard in order to produce Ascend P7’s successor, the P8. This device will lose the “Ascend” branding though, as will all Huawei devices it seems, this is the second report that claims that will happen. The company has already stopped using the “Ascend” branding in their official documents and yesterday’s report confirmed that the company won’t be using that branding anymore. This device will be called simply Huawei P8, which is a good thing if you ask me.

Anyhow, the report claims that the device will sport a beautiful design and that it will be really thin, I just hope not too thin. This thing is expected to feature a 5.2-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display (2.5D glass), 3GB of RAM for your multitasking needs and various storage options, of course. Huawei’s HiSilicon Kirin 930 octa-core processor is expected to power this thing on, and a fingerprint scanner will reportedly also going to be included. The device is expected to make an appearance in March on MWC, even though the P7 launched in May last year. The device won’t debut before April though, at least according to this report.

It seems like this handset will be Huawei’s first high-end offering this year, but the company is expected to release a couple more of those by the end of 2015. Huawei Ascend Mate 7’s successor will most certainly get released, the original was really popular, and according to some leaked information, the company will release an ultra high-end D8 handset sometime this year as well. This might be yet another great year for Huawei. Did you have a chance to use either of Huawei’s devices lately?

YouTube hosting its own Super Bowl halftime show to rival NBC

YouTube_App_Large_Icon

On February 1, people around the world will be watching the events taking place in Arizona for Super Bowl XLIX. While plenty will watch for the game played between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, halftime is where the spike in ratings lie. This year’s Super Bowl halftime show will be led by Katy Perry and Lenny Kravitz. It is a continuation in the trend of the Super Bowl halftime show being targeted at a younger demographic. Gone are the years of Bruce Springsteen or Prince performing at halftime. Katy Perry will get the youngsters and Lenny Kravitz will nab the stragglers. Online, YouTube has a plan of its own to compete with NBC during the broadcast for millennials.

YouTube will work with Collective Digital Studio to produce a halftime show streamed live on the AdBlitz Channel. Over twenty YouTube content producers totally more than sixty million subscribers will be in attendance. The host of the event, taking place at the YouTube space in Los Angeles, is Harley Morenstein of EpicMealTime. Other attendees include Fredie Wong, Rhett and Link, and Toby Turner.

Huawei said to be dropping “Ascend” from future phones

Huawei_Ascend_Mate2_Back_Camera_Lens_Huawei_Logo_2_TA

The next handset from Huawei will presumably be the successor to the Ascend P7. This time around, however, the naming will be slightly different. The company is apparently dropping the word “Ascend” when naming future phones. This means that the next handset will simply be known as the Huawei P8.

The alleged specifications for the P8 are impressive. The 5.2 display is met with 1920×1080 resolution. A fingerprint scanner has a spot beneath the display on the front panel. Inside, Huawei will use its very own octa-core Kirin 930 processor along with 3GB of RAM. Storage is ample, even without a microSD card slot, at 32GB.

At MWC 2015, we expect the Huawei P8 to be introduced for the first time.

Sharp announces the Aquos Mini and a high-end flip phone

sharp aquos mini Sharp has taken the wraps off of their first two devices for 2015, one of which is a high-end compact device, and the other is, surprisingly, a flagship flip phone.

The Aquos Mini is one of Sharp’s most impressive devices, featuring the razor thin bezels that their Aquos phones have come to be known for. The phone sports a 4.5-inch, 1080p screen with an extremely narrow body, and the display features Sharp’s IGZO technology which will supposedly let the device last for a full two to three days on its 2120 mAh battery.

Aside from the screen, you’ll find some very capable hardware on the Aquos Mini. There’s a Snapdragon 801 processor and a 13 megapixel rear camera, so while it’s not going to blow you away in 2015, it’s still an extremely powerful device, especially for one with a relatively smaller screen.

Sharp also announced the Aquos K flip phone, which is a fairly high end device in its category. The phone is thin and sports a 13 megapixel camera that’s capable of shooting 1080p video, and you’ll even get a full web browser and Google Search on it. Pretty fancy for such a basic device.

No word on price or availability yet, but keep an eye out over the next few weeks if you’re interested.

YouTube’s Next Version To Include Video Filters And A Couple Of Other New Features

AH Youtube 1.4 you tube

YouTube in the near future is looking to jump from version 6.0 to version 10.0 in the latest upcoming update to the Android app, and with the update it appears to be bringing some new features. We aren’t going to be seen a complete UI overhaul as the biggest UI changes in terms of design have already been implemented thanks to the Material Design interface, and there will not be any major changes to the app with this update but that doesn’t mean that the changes coming won’t be meaningful to some people.

According to the teardown of YouTube’s upcoming ver. 10.0 apk, Google looks to be getting video filters ready for the new version of the app. I know we previously stated that there won’t be any major changes with the upcoming update, and perhaps major is still too strong of a word to describe the addition of video filters. Having said that, being able to add filter overlays to your videos to tweak the look of your uploads is actually a pretty cool idea. Think about the way that HTC has implemented a sort of different design style to your videos using ZOE, or about the filters we see in many of the photo apps available for Android. This is what the video filters will most likely come out to be. So far there are seven different filters on deck that should appear at launch of this app version release, including Punk, Silver Screen, 8mm, Sepia, Sketch, Docu, and Glamour. Punk, Sepia, and 8mm should all be easy enough to visualize as we’ve seen filters like this used in other apps before.

Other features that appear to be coming to the YouTube app in the future update come in the form of a new capability to see who is engaging and participating in a conversation being had within the Live Chat feature, termed as Participants View. It also looks like there’s going to be a phone number verification feature coming in version 10.0, which may be aimed at making it easier for people who know each other personally(family and friends)to connect on YouTube. There’s no exact time frame for when we might see these features or if they’ll manifest like we’re envisioning, but they should be showing up sometime soon. We’ll be sure to update as soon as we know more definitive details on the matter.

WhatsApp finally plays nice with Android 5.0 Lollipop’s Priority notifications

whatsapp

If you recently uninstalled WhatsApp because of the app’s annoying ability to still send you audible notifications on Android 5.0 Lollipop — even when in Priority mode — we have some good news: the latest update seems to have fixed that right up.

It was an annoying little bug, one that sent Android users in a tissy a few months back, blaming Google for messing everything up in Lollipop. According to Google, Priority notifications were “working as intended” and it was up to app developers to make sure their apps played nice with Lollipop’s new Priority notification mode, or suffer the wrath of angry 1-star reviews from their users.

WhatsApp Notifications

For the vast majority of you still waiting for Android 5.0 Lollipop to eventually rollout to your device, Android 5.0 through users for a loop after replacing the tried-and-true “Silent” sound profile with their new and improved “Priority” mode which still allows app developers to send sound/vibrate notifications in their apps as they deem fit. WhatsApp situation was unique in that it used the “media” volume to send sound notifications, so technically it wasn’t their fault.

In any case, Android Lollipop users who were worried about the app disturbing their sleep are once again free to download and install WhatsApp via the link below. You can learn more about Android 5.0 and Priority notifications in our “15 Tips and Tricks for Android Lollipop Users” here .

Xiaomi growth is impressive, but not expected to hit U.S. or Europe for a few years

xiaomi

When Hugo Barra left Google to join Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi, many people saw that as a sign that the company might be the next big thing to sweep the globe in the smartphone industry. To some extent, that has proven to be true. Xiaomi has quickly risen to become the third largest smartphone manufacturer. That achievement has been accomplished on the back of their sales success in China and India. With some impressive devices, many are hoping Xiaomi will expand to other markets sooner rather than later, but in a recent interview with the BBC, Barra says not so fast.

Barra did confirm that Xiaomi has some ambitious, or as he puts it “insane,” plans to expand their global footprint. However, despite rumors flying during CES 2015, Barra says it will still be a few years until the company expands to European markets or the U.S. According to Barra, the market saturation and demands from consumers in those markets present some challenges for Xiaomi compared to some of the markets they are working on like India, Brazil, Russia, Turkey and Mexico.

Do you think Xiaomi will eventually succeed in European and North American markets if they take their time or will they miss a window of opportunity? Would you consider buying a Xiaomi smartphone if they were generally available in the U.S.?

[APK Teardown] YouTube v10.0 Set To Bring Video Filters And A Participants View For Live Chats

Youtube-Teardown_2

YouTube has always been one of Google less conventional properties, but the sudden leap from version 6.0 to 10.0 gave everybody a surprise. Even stranger is that with such a substantial jump in versions, there are virtually zero meaningful changes to the user-facing features. While there's relatively little for us to enjoy right now, a full teardown reveals that there are at least there are a few additions that might be worthy of a major version bump.

Motorola is in the process of updating a long list of apps for their devices. Most of the updated apps have not yet surfaced on Google Play, but APK files are available for download and install. Early feedback suggests users are having the most success installing the updates on Motorola Moto X 2014 devices, though some of them will install on other Motorola smartphones. Details are still sparse regarding the changes to the apps, but it looks like Motorola is prepping them for Android Lollipop including a dose of Material Design. Reports indicate some of these updated apps are included in some Lollipop soak tests that are underway.

Samsung Expected To Launch Cat.9 Galaxy Note 4 S-LTE This Week

AH Samsung Galaxy Note 4 -30

One of the most awaited devices of 2014 was the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. That is probably one of the benefits of releasing device so late in the year as speculation grows and grows and grows. That said the Note range is probably the most popular range of Samsung devices anyway. As such and release time aside, The Note 4 really was a highly awaited device. Then, when the ball actually dropped, Samsung went and surprised everyone by releasing two versions of the same phone, albeit one with an additional edge. Therefore, we came to know both the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and its sibling device, the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge.

Well, if two versions of the same phone was not enough for you, then you might remember that last month it was reported Samsung was expected to release another version of the Note 4. In case you are wondering, this one is going to be an enhanced LTE version of the Note 4, under the SM-N916 model number. Otherwise known as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 S-LTE. Although, the standard (first) Note 4 does support LTE-A (dual band carrier aggregation), the newer model will support tri-band aggregation, such as Cat.6 LTE and even Cat. 9 LTE. Although, you won’t physically be able to utilize Cat. 9 just yet due to the service not fully expected to be roled out until later in the year. Before that though, the latest news is that the S-LTE Note 4 will be available this week and as such, will mark the release of the first device to come loaded with Cat. 9 support.

It was originally expected that this Note 4 would also be the first device to come running with a Snapdragon 810 processor. However, this now looks like it won’t be the case, with the Note 4 S-LTE opting for Samsung’s own Exynos 5433 chip instead. If you are thinking about picking up this super download phone (which is capable of download speeds of up to 450Mbps) then unfortunately it seems it is only destined for the South Korean market. In terms of price, that remains unknown as well for now, although, with the device expected to be released this week, we should not have to wait too long to find out.

Hands On: Android Auto in the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Hyundai-Android-Auto-AH-02535

We were able to get some nice hands on with Android Auto in the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid at Hyundai’s booth today at the North American International Auto Show here in Detroit today. There’s nothing really new here, compared to what we saw back at Google I/O this past summer. But it is nice to see it in an actual car, and integrated into the steering wheel. The Steering Wheel has buttons for volume, voice control (Google Now and Siri depending on if you’re using Android Auto or Apple’s CarPlay), as well as previous and next tracks in music. Simply plug in your Android smartphone running Lollipop and voila. It’s really just that easy.

Android Auto will be available in Hyundai’s Geneis, Azera, and Sonata beginning this year, and will likely expand to other models in 2016. Below is a nice picture gallery showing Android Auto in the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.
