Samsung Reportedly Testing Tablet With Massive 18.4″ Display

According to a leaked inventory image, Samsung is working on a new tablet, featuring a display size of a whopping 18.4″. Set to be tested in South Korea, with all seven of the prototypes to be destroyed upon completion so as not to be leaked, it is shown via the list that each unit costs roughly € 465.

If this device does see the light of day, it will easily be Samsung’s largest tablet to ever launch publicly, with the biggest currently being the Galaxy Tab Pro at 12.2″. It is also possible that when and if we see this tablet hit the market, it will be advertised to overseas countries and not the US, as many markets outside of America use tablets as their primary means of media consumption, and not a TV.

Regardless, 18.4″ is certainly big, even for Samsung.

Would you be interested in such a monstrous device?

Deal: Unlocked Galaxy S6 Edge 32GB for $550 on eBay

Over on eBay, you can purchase a new unlocked Galaxy S6 Edge 32GB model in Black Sapphire for just $550. eBay lists this as being $450 off its retail value, but that is not exactly correct. On T-Mobile you can purchase this same device for $680 or on AT&T for $815. Regardless, you are still saving money on a great device.

Included with the price is free shipping, on top of the unused, unopened device. This is not factory or manufacturer refurbished. The GSM unlocked nature of this phone will allow you to connect to most or any GSM carriers in the US. This includes T-Mobile, AT&T, metroPCS, Net10, and Ultra Mobile.

When reviewing the Galaxy S6 Edge, we came away insanely impressed with the phone’s display and camera, but wish it featured a bit more thickness so as to allow for a larger battery.

If interested, go grab it before they are all gone.

Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact Supposedly Make First Appearances

To say that the Sony Xperia Z4 (or Z3+ or Z4v or whatever the hell Sony is calling it today) was a disappointment, is probably a gross understatement. Because of the lack of anything remarkable with that handset, most ignored it and instead set sights on what would hopefully be a news-worthy follow-up, a phone that we all assume will be called the Xperia Z5. In a series of purported leaks from @ViziLeaks, we may have our first looks at not only the Xperia Z5, but it’s little brother, the Xperia Z5 Compact

In the image above, we are seeing two blocky, black rectangles thought to be each phone. The Xperia Z5 is on the left and the smaller brother, the Xperia Z5 Compact, is on the right. Not much can be taken from this photo, other than the fact that Sony forgot to include USB Type-C, even though Google wants to make it the standard for Android going forward. The phones also look all sorts of uninspiring in terms of design.

And that brings us to the two images below, which show the sides of each device, along with their screens on and talk of fingerprint sensors embedded in power/lock buttons.

On the screen of the Z5 Compact, you can see a tutorial telling a person to press their thumb to the power button, so that the device can learn the thumb’s fingerprint. On the bigger Z5, you can see the setup with presses of a thumb has already begun, similarly to how Samsung and Apple do their setups.

Both devices could arrive at the tech world’s IFA conference next month in Brazil.

Excited? This is Sony we’re talking about here.

HTC to Cut Jobs and Product Lineup as Shares Fall

HTC is looking to rebound after a rough first half in 2015. Told to reporters by the company’s Chief Financial Officer Chialin Chang, HTC is soon to cut its workforce and scale back on products, focusing more heavily on high-end devices to compete with Samsung and Apple. “The cuts will be across the board,” she states. “They will be significant.”

HTC shares have fallen a little over 50% so far this year, as the company was hit hard by its competition in not only North America, but emerging markets as well. According to Chang, HTC currently holds 20% of the smartphone market in emerging markets, such as India.

Even with HTC making moves to stop the bleeding, industry analysts don’t project positive outcomes for the company, at least for the time being. Analyst Calvin Huang of Taiwan’s SinoPac Securities wrote recently, “We believe HTC will keep losing share in the smartphone market and will keep losing money.”

Chang states that the cost reductions at HTC would extend to the first quarter of next year.

Report: LG-Made Nexus to Come Loaded With Android Pay This Year

According to one report, the next Nexus device from LG, said to launch this October, will ship with Android Pay. Should this surprise anyone? No, not really. Android Pay was detailed in-depth during this year’s Google I/O, usually foreshadowing an eventual launch with the next version of Android, which will almost certainly come preloaded on any next Nexus devices.

Android Pay is your typical mobile payments service. Inside, users can sync credit cards, debit cards, and even loyalty rewards cards, with buyers able to utilize any of these at supported terminals that feature NFC compatibility. Android Pay is not only for brick-and-mortar, though, as application developers can also build in Android Pay support, allowing users to spend money directly through Android Pay on almost any platform. A few applications already confirmed for support are grubHub, OpenTable, and Newegg.

LG is reported to be working closely with Google to fine tune Android Pay for the upcoming device, but it is not detailed if LG will also be building in a fingerprint reader for the device. If this next Nexus is to be touted as the next-gen mobile payments machine, then we would assume a fingerprint reader is a must.

All we have for specs are unconfirmed rumors, but things are shaping up quite nicely. Basically, the Nexus from LG is thought to be a smaller, somewhat Nexus 5-like device with possible 1080p display and Snapdragon processor, while the Huawei-produced Nexus will feature a larger, 5.7″ QHD display and Snapdragon SoC.

Are you ready to dive headfirst into Android Pay later this year?

HBO NOW, Among Others, Now Supports Chromecast

HBO Now, the standalone HBO streaming service that requires no ties to a cable provider, received an update this morning to allow for Chromecast support. Now, instead of watching your favorite shows such as Eastbound & Down and Game of Thrones, or fantastic movie titles like Jersey Boys on a tiny display, you can cast them to the big screen HDTV in your living room.

The update also includes updated performance tweaks, plus the app has added the ability to send users push notifications. These notifications will likely be used to recommend shows and movies to users.

If HBO Now does not interest you, then you will be happy to learn that a gang of other apps received Chromecast support this week as well in Google Play. The list of newly supported Chromecast apps are FitFlap, Catch Phrase Blitz, Pixlr, Watch Food Network, Watch Travel Channel, and Pokemon TV.

The HBO Now update is now live on Google Play for all to download.

You Decide: Is This the Huawei Nexus?

We’re getting closer to Nexus season, which means purported leaks of upcoming devices are going to surface more often. Take today for example, where we have a new video of a device that the internet wants you to believe is the upcoming Huawei Nexus, aka “angler.” Is it? I don’t think anyone actually knows outside of Huawei and Google, but there are some things worth discussing here.

First, the device has that matte black finish that Google is quite fond of. This is obviously some sort of prototype phone, but even prototypes tend to use materials you would see in final builds. Second, the shape of the camera sensor looks identical to the sensor found on the LG Nexus 5 from a couple of years back. Why on Earth would Huawei use a similar design to an LG phone? Great question! Then again, if this is a Nexus, it’s technically Google’s phone, so it can look however Google wants it to look. Third, the overall shape of the phone, along with the placement of the fingerprint sensor looks a lot like Huawei’s Ascend Mate 7, only with a Googley flair. And with Huawei thought to make a Nexus, well, this could be it, I guess.

So what’s weird about this? The video is ridiculously terrible and low-res (Who shoots video in 240p?), so you can’t make much out in any fine detail. There is a word at the bottom of the phone that is tough to make out, but could be “porsche” or something along those lines. There is also a weird-looking PIN setup near the bottom, where we would expect to see a USB Type-C port. And that’s about all we can make out.

I don’t know if this is a Huawei Nexus. It could be. It also might not be. You decide.
