Sony’s 2016 CES Press Event Starts at 5PM, Watch It Here!

Sony is hosting just about the last of the CES Press Day events and the whole show kicks off right now (5PM Pacific). We, honestly, have no expectations for this event, but there could be a sprinkling of mobile here and there.

We’ll see TVs and maybe some new Walkman or audio products and a camera or two and maybe even a tablet or phone. OK, the tablet and phone seem unlikely, but you just never know. Maybe some VR?

Whatever they show, you can watch its unveiling at the live stream below.

HTC Details Vive Pre, 2nd Gen Developer Edition Model With Front-Facing Camera

This week at CES, HTC introduced the 2nd generation developer edition of the Vive VR system, the Vive Pre. With an upgraded design, more suited for comfort while wearing, as well as a front-facing camera, HTC will be seeding an additional 7,000 units to developers to help bolster its ecosystem before the product’s launch in April of 2016.

According to HTC, every single component of Vive has been “redesigned from the ground up to provide better comfort, ergonomics, and performance.” The latest models are in Vegas for members of the press and select industry insiders to go hands-on, and yes, we will be testing it out.

On top of a more comfortable experience, the Vive Pre features a front-facing camera and room-scaling technology, allowing users to bring real-life elements into their virtual world. According to the press release from HTC, “Being able to take a seat, find your drink, and carry on conversations without removing your headset is only the beginning of what’s possible.”

Vive is set to publicly launch on April 1, which is quickly approaching.

Samsung Announces Platinum and 18K Rose Gold Gear S2 Classic Models

Moments before Samsung took the stage at CES for its 2016 press day event, the Korean electronics company announced new variants of its Gear S2 Classic watch line. In February, you will be able to buy the Gear S2 Classic with either an 18K rose gold or platinum case.

Samsung didn’t announce pricing, but I’d imagine with those kinds of metals, they’ll be significantly more expensive than the $350 you currently pay for the regular Classic.

Again, the new Gear S2 Classic options launch in February.

Samsung elevates the Gear S2 classic design with new materials

LAS VEGAS – January 5, 2016 – Continuing its leadership in the wearables category, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., today announced two new elegant editions of the Gear S2 classic, one encased in 18K Rose Gold and another in Platinum, offering users diverse options to express and match their style while highlighting its circular design and advanced functionality.

“In 2015, we set a new standard with the Gear S2 in smart wearable category. We broke barriers to introduce one of Samsung’s most progressive wearable devices to date,” said Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “In 2016, we will continue to raise the bar, so that we can deliver products that our customers want most.”

With the successful launch of the Gear S2, Samsung is openly working with partners to provide more convenience and expanded user capabilities. CNN and Bloomberg Gear S2 apps, together with its watch face feature, have been a few of the more popular apps followed by a variety of watch faces and convenient apps like eBay, ESPN, Uber and Voxer.

The new Gear S2 classic will include NFC technology to offer Samsung Pay, which will be available to Gear S2 users early this year starting in the U.S.

For a more personal and customizable experience, Samsung is expanding its line of watch straps and watch face options. Samsung has partnered with exclusive designers, such as Colombo, on premium watch straps for the Gear S2, and has introduced fun and creative watch faces including Peanuts characters and artworks from Keith Haring, Jean-Michael Basquiat, Jeremyville and Burton Morris.

The new Gear S2 classic will be available in Rose Gold case with an Ivory Genuine Leather Band and in Platinum case with a Black Genuine Leather Band beginning in February.

Casio Smart Outdoor Watch to Launch in April, Priced at $499

Casio is set to enter the Android Wear market, as announced this afternoon at CES. Called the Smart Outdoor Watch, Casio’s offering will be intended for those who enjoy the outdoors, whether it be for hiking, camping, fishing, cycling, or anything else. Featuring US military-grade water resistance (up to 50 meters) and shock resistance, the WSD-F10 smartwatch also has unique sensors not typically found on your average Android Wear smartwatch, including a pressure sensor and compass.

Data from the aforementioned sensors can be accessed by pressing one of the watch’s various exterior buttons, which are specifically designed to be pressed by glove-wearing hands. The watch’s 1.32″ display features a dual-layer that includes both a monochrome LCD and color LCD. The dual-layer design helps improve battery life, said to be rated at one day, and allows the screen to be visible regardless of lighting condition.

It should also be noted that the display features the same “flat tire” design that we see on the Moto 360 smartwatch from Motorola. Display resolution is listed at 320 x 300.

As for software, Casio is building in quite a few watch faces that look identical to existing watch faces you can find on their lineup of watches today, and in addition, several fitness apps will come preloaded as well.

The Casio Smart Outdoor Watch is set to launch this upcoming April, available in four different colors, set to the tune of $499.

Samsung’s 2016 CES Press Event Starts at 2PM, Watch It Here!

Press day at 2016 CES is far from over, with Samsung up next on the big stage. Their live event kicks off at 2PM Pacific (5PM Eastern) if you are interested in the goods that this Korean giant has to show off for the coming year.

Like with LG’s event, we aren’t live blogging this because we don’t expect there to be much in terms of Android products. While we love a good fridge with a giant display on it, auto-opening doors, TV’s designed by goofy-haired artists, and ridiculously fancy washers and dryers, those aren’t exactly what we are known for covering.

So, sit back and enjoy the live stream that we have included above along with us.

Qualcomm’s aptX HD Brings High-Res Audio Over Bluetooth

Qualcomm intends to make the audio you hear between your phone and a pair of Bluetooth earbuds sound as good as if it were a wired connection. Today at CES, the chipmaker announced aptX HD, a “newly enhanced” codec that delivers 24-bit music quality over a wireless Bluetooth connection.

Qualcomm previously introduced aptX to Bluetooth, which they say “revolutionized” wireless audio over Bluetooth by bringing the quality up to CD levels. With the new aptX HD, the audio only gets better with an increase from 16-bit to 24-bit.

Over the next year, you’ll start to see phones and tablets with the aptX CD codec on board. In the mean time, Qualcomm is making it available immediately so that others can begin to build in this new level of Bluetooth audio.

More info can be found here.

Qualcomm aptX HD Delivers High Resolution Audio over Bluetooth

—Enhanced Audio Codec Helps Manufacturers make Wireless HD Audio a Reality—

LAS VEGAS — January 5, 2016 — Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd., launched Qualcomm® aptX™ HD, a newly enhanced codec that offers 24 bit music quality over a Bluetooth® wireless connection. Building on the existing aptX audio codec platform, which revolutionized the Bluetooth stereo listening experience, aptX HD is designed to enable audio manufacturers to meet the increasing demand for high resolution wireless audio.

“aptX transformed the Bluetooth stereo audio ecosystem, providing near CD-quality audio without the need for wires, and consumers now seek out the quality the aptX brand has come to represent,” said Anthony Murray, senior vice president and general manager, IoE, Qualcomm Technologies International Ltd. “Today consumers enjoy the benefits and freedom of wireless audio on the wide variety of aptX enabled devices available but demand for higher resolution audio is growing to fulfil the desire for the most premium listening experience possible. With aptX HD, we are helping device manufacturers to reduce development time and quickly meet demand.”

aptX HD is immediately available as part of the CSR8675 Bluetooth audio SoC platform which supports 24 bit audio end-to-end. As with aptX, aptX HD is designed to address the challenge of sending high quality audio wirelessly over Bluetooth by compressing the large audio files so that they can be transmitted through the wireless pipeline without affecting the listening experience quality. To ensure a seamless consumer experience, and to interact with the millions of aptX enabled devices already available, the enhanced codec retains backward compatibility with all Bluetooth devices containing ‘classic’ aptX.

aptX audio technology has a long history in the pro-audio and broadcast ecosystems. The technology is used to deliver high quality audio in over 30,000 radio stations and 20,000 cinemas across the world. In 2009, aptX was introduced to consumer electronics to provide quality wireless audio – and today, has been adopted by over 320 leading audio brands making it available in millions of headphones, speakers, soundbars, automotive and other Bluetooth audio products worldwide. It’s also widely enabled in mobile devices and is now available in flagship Android smartphones and tablets from Samsung, Sony, HTC, Motorola and LG, as well as in other operating systems including Windows 10, MAC OS X and Blackberry.

“aptX was one of the first technologies to bring pro-audio quality to wireless consumer devices and has become synonymous with superior sound quality. The technology will continue to evolve as we invest in further innovation to ensure it meets the future needs of our customers,” concludes Anthony Murray.

To learn more about aptX HD please read “Meeting the need for hi-resolution wireless audio: Introducing aptX HD,” by Steve Graham, vice president, product marketing, Qualcomm Technologies International, Ltd.

Fossil Announces Q54 Pilot, an Analog Watch With Smart Notifications

Fossil announced the newest addition to its Q connected wearable lineup this morning, the Q54 Pilot. Unlike a normal smartwatch with a digital display, the Q54 Pilot features a traditional, analog look. When synced with your smartphone via Bluetooth, the watch is able to deliver buzz notifications and LED indicators for when a favorited contact is attempting to get a hold of you.

Not only can you be informed of incoming notifications, but the Q54 Pilot can also count your steps, as well as calories. However, with no digital display, all management of notifications and fitness is handled directly from a smartphone via the Fossil Q application.

An update for the Q app will allow users to customize vibration patterns for notifications, plus other new features.

The Q54 Pilot will launch in early spring, priced between $175 and $215, depending on strap options.

LG’s CES 2016 Press Event Kicks Off at 8AM, Watch It Here!

LG always kicks off CES press day (well, after Ford’s short show earlier) with an 8AM Pacific slot that gives the company the opportunity to get on the board early. That means they show off a bit of everything from their portfolio, like new appliance lines, whatever new TV OLED tech they have come up with, and new Android products.

Unfortunately, we aren’t really expecting anything on the Android front this year, unless LG has somehow kept something major under wraps (that’s doubtful). Still, their press day 45-minute event is worth a watch, especially if you are looking to beef up your home with new LG goods.

No live blog this year, because we aren’t really into telling you about fridges and washing machines.

You can watch the event at the top of this post.

Under Armour and HTC Introduce UA HealthBox With Fitness Tracker, HR Monitor, and Scale

To kick off CES, Under Armour and HTC announced their take on an entire “fitness system.” It’s called the UA HealthBox and it’s a combination of products that includes a fitness tracker, heart rate monitor, and scale, along with the UA Record app, to give you a total fitness picture.

The fitness band is called the UA Band. It sounds like a pretty standard fitness band that tracks workouts, steps, sleep, etc. It syncs with the UA Record app and even has an LED that “indicates heart rate zone” when paired with the heart rate monitor.

As for the UA Heart Rate, which is the heart rate monitor, you get a HR sensor and chest strap that are compact, but hopefully accurate as well. With the UA Record app, you can customize your heart rate zones.

Finally, we have the UA Scale, which is a WiFi enabled scale that syncs with UA Record to track your progress. It features an “iconic circular design” along with LEDs that hide when not in use. It can support up to eight users.

The UA HealthBox runs $400 and will go up for pre-order today. The “box” will officially be available on January 22.

HTC & UNDER ARMOUR UNVEIL UA HEALTHBOX

Pre-orders begin today for the first comprehensive connected fitness system

LAS VEGAS, CES – January 5, 2016 – Today, HTC and Under Armour unveiled UA HealthBox™, the world’s first connected fitness system that measures, monitors, and manages the most important drivers of health and fitness – sleep, fitness, activity and nutrition. Designed and manufactured by HTC and powered by UA Record™, UA HealthBox includes a fitness band, heart rate monitor and a smart scale that all connect seamlessly with UA Record to provide insights that empower individuals to improve their health and fitness. The new UA Record is available for download from the Google Play™ store and App Store.

With an HTC smartphone, or other Android or iOS smartphone, UA Record serves as the dashboard for daily activities that dictate how you feel. Following the same philosophy HTC takes when designing smartphones, UA HealthBox removes the barriers and complexity of technology with a simple to set up and easy to use system.

“This system contains everything a consumer needs to better manage their health and fitness,” said Wolfgang Muller, Executive Director – Connected Products, HTC. “Whether you are a high performance athlete or simply committed to improving your health, UA HealthBox is the only system that delivers the complete picture and provides the information and motivation needed to achieve your goals.”

UA Band is designed to be worn all-day, every day. It tracks daily activity, workouts and sleep. All day activity capture allows you to set a daily goal and track progress on the band. UA Band utilizes a seamless exterior shell with a display that is discreetly hidden under an outer layer allowing the technology to disappear when it is not in use. Designed with athletes in mind, the band offers an advanced workout mode with a display that stays on during the workout, as well as an LED that indicates heart rate zone when paired with UA Heart Rate. UA Band comes in black with a red textured underside to allow for moisture wicking.

UA Heart Rate is a compact heart rate monitor with an innovative micro snap technology designed to make it undetectable during workouts. The chest strap and removable sensor helps individuals monitor intensity and train smarter. The UA Heart Rate was created to provide an accurate calculation of calories burned. Combined with the UA Record app, UA Heart Rate allows you to customize your heart rate zones.

UA Scale is a beautifully crafted, Wi-Fi enabled scale with an iconic circular design. The scale utilizes a sheet of glass with advanced conductive paint technology that enables weight and body fat percentage readings. The hidden LED display behind the glass makes technology invisible when not in use. The scale can support up to eight users and syncs with the UA Record app for individuals to view trends with weight as part of their overall dashboard. UA Scale comes in black with a red textured underside.

“There are several options for consumers today when it comes to monitoring their daily activity, but no option when it comes to capturing and presenting information in a meaningful way. Most of us know more about the health of our car than we do about our own bodies,” said Robin Thurston, Chief Digital Officer, Under Armour. “Under Armour and HTC set out to change that by going far beyond the automation of data tracking. UA HealthBox provides custom health and fitness experiences designed to guide you towards your goals.”

Because of its unique approach, UA HealthBox is intended to be an integral part of an individual’s daily life, and as such the importance of design was paramount. UA HealthBox has been designed to unify the portfolio of products and the experience of using them.

“At HTC design is an uncompromising part of our culture. It is our DNA and we have an obsessive focus on delivering beautiful design not just on the outside but on the inside too,” said Muller. “UA HealthBox is beautifully designed with no detail overlooked, but it was also designed to be a comprehensive connected system that is easy to use throughout the day and every day. This is what sets it apart from anything on the market today.”

Availability

UA HealthBox will be available on January 22 in the U.S. with pre-orders beginning today on www.HTC.com, www.UA.com and at Under Armour Brand House locations. UA HealthBox (including UA Band, UA Heart Rate and UA Scale) will cost $400. UA HealthBox will roll out to additional US retailers in the first quarter and internationally throughout 2016.

Jaybird Announces Freedom and X3 Sport Earbuds With Custom Sound Profiles

Jaybird, one of the few noteworthy and quality Bluetooth sport earbud brands, announced two new products to its line-up today, the Jaybird Freedom and Jaybird X3. Both will be available later this year, along with a patent pending app to give you custom sound profiles on each.

With the Freedom, Jaybird is saying that these are their “most advanced” Bluetooth earbuds to date. You have a patented “tapered step-down design” that, along with Comply foam tips and “enhanced comfort” ear fins, ensures a proper a comfortable fit, even with smaller ears.

Jaybird says the Freedom gets up to 8 hours of playback time, which is a combination of a 4-hour charge on the buds and another through a charging clip.

With the new X3, you get earbuds that are a lot like the X2, only in some new colors and what we are assuming are all new quality parts.

The big deal with both, though, is the fact that each pairs with Jaybird’s new MySound app, which allows you to setup custom sound profiles on the headphones that can then be taken to whatever music app you want to listen to. The app will be available on both Android and iOS and will allow you to setup profiles, sync to the headphones, and then take off for your workout or commute.

The Jaybird Freedom runs $199 and will be available in Q2. The new X3 is $149 and will be available in Q3.

Jaybird Announces Two New Wireless Sport Earbuds: Freedom and X3

— New earbuds feature industry-first design and audio technology —

SPECIAL TO CES — January 5, 2016 — Premium active lifestyle brand, Jaybird, today announced the addition of Freedom and X3 to its growing line of high-end sport earbuds. Jaybird Freedom and X3 are the first wireless sport earbuds to include a customizable sound profile that moves with the user from device to device, and will be available in Q2 and Q3 2016, respectively.

Jaybird Freedom

The micro-sized, secure-fit Jaybird Freedom are the company’s most advanced Bluetooth earbuds ever. The most notable feature of Freedom is its patented tapered step-down design, ensuring a comfortable, secure fit in any ear size. These sweat-proof premium metal buds fit perfectly in even the smallest of ears and come with Comply™ memory foam tips, as well as enhanced comfort ear fins to ensure a secure fit. Its passive noise isolation drowns out ambient noise to enhance the sound quality customers have come to expect from Jaybird’s audio line.

With its new, patent-pending Jaybird MySound app — available for Android and iOS — users can now customize their equalizer settings, which are then automatically synced to Freedom, creating a unique sound profile that is saved on the buds no matter the music device they’re paired with — a first for the wireless sport earbuds market.

Freedom provides users with eight hours of playtime — four hours in the buds and an additional four hours with the included charging clip — for worry-free listening throughout the day or a week’s worth of workouts. Equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, Freedom can be paired with up to eight devices, and its inline metal remote gives users complete control over their wireless music with volume buttons and allows for phone calls with its built-in microphone.

Freedom will be available for $199.95 and come in five beautiful color metal options — Carbon (black on black metal), Blaze (red on silver metal), Ocean (blue on silver metal), Gold (white on gold metal), and Blush (white on rose gold metal).

“Freedom combines fashion and sport into the smallest and most elegant wireless earbuds we’ve ever designed,” said Rene Oehlerking, Jaybird’s CMO. “The product is both gorgeous and versatile and is designed to be the only buds you’ll ever need for fashion, fitness and work. Freedom takes a huge step forward in wireless earbuds innovation by giving users the features of premium over-the-ear headphones in a micro-sized, in-ear package.”

Jaybird X3

The successor to the wildly popular Jaybird X2, these secure-fit sport Bluetooth 4.0 buds also feature the proprietary Jaybird MySound app, which gives users complete control over their sound profile by allowing them to customize the EQ settings, and like Freedom automatically sync on the X3 hardware. The seven-hour battery allows users to enjoy a week’s worth of music during workouts on a single charge, and Jaybird’s proprietary SignalPlus™ antenna architecture allows for a stronger signal resulting in skip-free music listening in outdoor environments.

Featuring the same powerful award-winning Jaybird sound, the X3 includes passive noise isolation technology to enhance sound quality. Sporting a smaller hardware profile than its predecessor, the new sweat-proof buds also incorporate the X-Fit™ system as well as enhanced comfort earfins to give users an even more secure fit during the hardest of workouts. The inline remote allows for easy wireless music and call control, and its Voice Prompts let you know when you’ve successfully connected X3 or turned the device on or off.
