Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge

samsung_galaxy_note_edge_demo_4

The Galaxy Note Edge is the biggest surprise out of Samsung’s Unpacked 2014 Episode 2 event. We knew that Samsung was working on a device that had display with a curved edge, but we were not really expecting it today. Staying true to the Note series of devices, the Galaxy Note Edge keeps everything the same such as including an S Pen and its software goodies. And the device’s dialysis is 5.6 inches, so there is very little screen real estate lost in comparison to the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 4. In fact, the two devices maintain the same exact footprint.

Spending some time with the Galaxy Note Edge will show that its unique design can be very useful. Tools and notifications are shown on the curved edge on the right side. Developers can take advantage of this space with the SDK that is available starting today.

Samsung employ the Hoff and KITT in their latest Samsung Smart Home Advert

samsung_knightrider_ad_screenshot

Over the years, Samsung have excelled in two directions. The first as to be expected is its dominance in the consumer electronics market. However, the second is their very clever use of marketing in advertisements. In particular, a crowd favorite was the Samsung Galaxy S range adverts which cleverly depicted and mocked the iPhone (and their customers) with their “The Next Big Thing is Here” series of ads. One of the most recent ones was the now infamous “Wall Huggers” advert for the S5 which took a pop at the iPhone’s inability to remove its back and change the battery. Well, Samsung are again at it although this time their new marketing video campaign is cantered around Samsung Smart Home.

By now, most consumers will know Samsung do not only produce expensive phone and tablets but also seem to manufacturer every item in the house from Smart TV’s through to Smart fridge-freezers. In conjunction to manufacturing every possible item you can think of Samsung has been working hard to create a platform which can integrate all the Samsung smart devices together. This is where the Samsung Smart Home comes in. The service largely consists of a downloadable app and cloud based service which allows users to control all of their smart products remotely. For instance with the app you can change the temperature of your fridge or start the laundry with the smart washing machine. From Samsung’s perspective the uses are endless. In an attempt to further drive branding for the smart home range Samsung have released a funny video highlighting the use of the technology. However, for this one Samsung have employed a couple of new stars…or to be correct old stars. The new Samsung Smart home advert features a reunion between Michael Knight (David Hasselhoff) and KITT. Some readers our there won’t be old enough to remember Michael and KITT, but to cut a long story short they were massive personalities back in the 80’s and even had their own TV show, Knight Rider. For those who never saw the show, in short it was a love story between a man and talking car. Yep, you should check it out.

The new advert depicts the Hoff (not Michael) and KITT still working (and presumably living) together. While Hoff is filming the new Samsung ad and highlighting what you can do with the Samsung Smart Home ecosystem, KITT gets jealous and makes his feelings clear by trying to sabotage the filming. It is worth noting this is not the first time Samsung have referenced Knight Rider in an advert. Back in October of Last Year Samsung teamed up with 72andSunny to create an advert for the Galaxy Gear watch. The advert focused on the notion of smartwatches and played an audio clip from Knight Rider of Michael talking to KITT through his watch (was another common theme of the show). Anyway, the advert is worth a watch so hit the play button below and leave a comment with your thoughts.

Fleksy Keyboard Gets Its First OEM Partnership, Will Launch Pre-Loaded On The Samsung Gear S

thumbnail (1) The Gear S is an interesting device, not so much for its hardware as for its approach: Samsung decided to equip the smartwatch with a stand-alone wireless connection so it can work just fine on its own, thank you. Of course, that also means that for at least some of the time you'll need to operate it like a smartphone strapped to your wrist... which can get kind of awkward. To help ease the situation, Samsung is partnering with Android keyboard developer Fleksy, pre-loading the unique input method on the Gear S.

Sony’s Xperia Z3 Will Carry Remote Play For Use With The PS4 Console

48_GCM10_Game_Control_Mount_Studio

Sony just unveiled a lot of new products during their IFA livestream this morning, and one of those products was the brand new Sony Xperia Z3. With Sony’s devices over the years there has been a dedicated integration with their Playstation systems in some from or another, but with the new Xperia Z3(and presumably the Z3 compact, Tablet Z3 and Tablet Z3 compact as well)this is the first device that actually supports Sony’s awesome Remote Play functionality allowing you to game on your PS4 console, and then at any time you can transfer the game to your phone screen to pick up and play in another room or on the go should you have to leave the house.

Sony has always had a soft spot for gaming, they do after all have the number one selling video game console on the market at the moment, so it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that they’re adding this feature in. For anyone that is not familiar with Remote Play, it’s a feature that Sony introduced with the PS Vita handheld gaming system originally for use with the last generation console, the PS3. They have since carried it over to the PS4 as well, and now with the Xperia Z3 device releases, users will have Remote Play functionality on their handsets too.

The Remote Play experience is such that you can basically have second screen functionality so that you can continue playing games whether someone wants to watch something on the big screen or if you have to leave the house but don’t want to drop your game session. Remote Play requires a constant data connection however, something that has made it a tad bit difficult for anyone that only has the WiFi enabled model of the Vita, or doesn’t subscribe to a 3G/4G service plan through AT&T on the other model. Since the Z3 would have a data plan attached to it through your carrier it’ll always be prepared to connect up and play at any time. It also has the capability to mount into the PS4 controller with an attachment,(making the setup look somewhat like the MOGA)allowing for the exact same control experience as you would have if you were playing on the PS4. This is huge for gamers, as anyone who has used the Remote Play feature using the Vita can tell you that while awesome to have, the controls are just not the same and it makes playing some games rather difficult. With the Xperia Z3 and the new Remote Play feature using the PS4 controller, gaming on the go just got ten times better and without having to forfeit true console controls.

The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is an 8-inch Full HD Android Tablet from Sony

Sony-Xperia-Z3-Tablet-Compact-AH-1

Sony announced a ton of new devices this morning. Including three new smartphones (The Xperia Z3, Z3 Compact and the E3). Now they’ve also announced the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. Which is a smaller, 8-inch tablet from Sony. As the name “compact” implied. It’s basically got all of the features of the larger Xperia Z2 tablet, but of course a smaller display. Looking at the press images, it looks like the bezel is quite a bit smaller, which is always nice to see as well. Although we venture to guess that the larger bezels are due to it being waterproof, which the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is also Waterproof as you’d expect.

As far as specs go, we’re looking at a 8-inch display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, 3GB of RAM with 16GB of storage and a microSD card slot. There’s also a 8.1MP camera on the back and a 2.2MP front-facing shooter along with a 4500mAh battery inside. We do also have all the flaps for the charging port, and microSD card slot as you’d expect. Since it is a waterproof tablet rated at IP65/68. So it can stay under water for about 30 minutes or so. Which isn’t bad at all.

Verizon was nice enough to send over the Xperia Z2 Tablet earlier this summer for us to take a look at, and I really liked it. It was a really nice tablet and one I’d definitely buy. And that’s coming from a guy that’s not a fan of 10-inch tablets. So seeing a 8-inch tablet from Sony is exactly what I wanted to see. The Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact should be available later this fall worldwide. We don’t have any word on LTE versions. But I’m sure we’ll get more info on that a bit later.
