Google Is Prepping Major Changes To Wallet To Better Compete With Apple Pay, More Will Be Revealed At I/O In May

Wallet-Thumb

Wallet has to be pretty frustrating for Google. They beat Apple to the punch by quite a long time, but the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus basically introduced the lay public to mobile payments. How did this happen? Insert the tired cliches about Apple's control over hardware and software here. More interesting is what Google will do, considering how much they still have to gain by getting more adoption of their Apple Pay competitor.

nexus2cee_lollipop-1600_thumb.jpg

Despite its appearance on Android One devices, we've had complete radio silence from Google about Android 5.1. Still, as long as it is in the wild, we're going to keep hearing about it. In this case, we have found out that the animation associated with toggling the auto-rotate feature has come back in 5.1 after disappearing in 5.0. Take a look.

This might not exactly change the way you use your Android phone or tablet, but it's nice.

bubble icon2

Bubblesoft, the developers of the popular BubbleUPnP app, have published a server equivalent for Android. Previously, you could run a BubbleUPnP Server on Windows, Mac, Linux, Raspberry Pi, or a NAS. Then, you could use the player app on Android to access or share your local media. Now, your Android devices can also be used as a server, but with several important caveats. At least, if you know where to find the app.

Google Beats Lawsuit Alleging Anti-Competitive Practices Over Android Default Apps

Google-Thumb

Google has come out unscathed from a lawsuit in which consumers accused the company of anti-competitive practices. The basic allegation was that Google requires manufacturers to use a Google version of Android and that the way they place their own apps at the forefront has increased prices and prevented potential rivals from emerging. The main issue is the stipulation that Google's search be default in order to preload Play Services on Android devices.

iFixit launches Android-only repair page with hundreds of guides, replacement tools, and parts

iFixit graphic custom

DIY repair site iFixit has long been a great source of helpful walkthroughs on dismantling and repairing broken Apple devices. And while we often times see them taking apart the latest Android devices, they never actually had a dedicated site dealing with Android-only — until now.

iFixit’s all new Android repair hub is now live at ifixit.com/android and should your Android device or any of your components fail you, it’s there you’ll find iFixit’s famous teardowns, replacement guides, and the tools needed to get your phone or tablet back in working order. There are literally hundreds of Android devices (so far 252) ranging from smartphones, to tablets, smartwatches — even the Chromecast — with more being added every day.

The best part is you’ll find all the replacement parts for these devices too, with their catalog expanding further in the very near future. iFixit mentions they’re working with technical writing students at 40 universities around the US to help bring even more guides onto the site, and should you repair a device where a guide is absent, you can help your Android brethren by submitting your own. That, or you can donate your old device to help out here .

Sprint announces new $90 Family Share Plan with 10 GB of data

sprint_logo

Sprint announced today that it is making available a new Family Share Plan that it thinks places it at the forefront in terms of providing value for customers. The new plan provides 12 GB of high-speed data along with unlimited talk and text for up to 10 lines for only $90 per month. This bests T-Mobile slightly, which has a plan offering 10 GB of data for $100 per month if four lines are on the plan, as the carriers appear to be focusing more on scooping up entire families as customers. In order to achieve this feat Sprint is waiving the normal line access fee for new lines on the plan until March 31, 2016 after which the plan may no longer represent such a value.

To try to sweeten the deal some, Sprint is also reducing the line access charge for handsets from $25 per month to $15 per month. If customers opt for a 12 GB per month or larger plan and port over their number, Sprint will waive line access fees for one year if the device is purchased through Sprint Easy Pay, Sprint Lease or the Sprint iPhone for Life Plan.

Finally, Sprint will help customers porting numbers over to 12 GB or larger plans by providing an American Express Reward Card valued at $350 per line to help buy out contracts.

If you are interested in switching, you have until March 12, 2015 to take advantage of the offer. Sprint customers can take advantage of these deals through Sprint stores, online or through telesales. Hit the source link for more details.
