Samsung has finally listed it’s follow up to the Galaxy Mega, the Galaxy Mega 2, on one of their official websites today. That means we now finally have official specs as well as photos of Samsung’s Galaxy Mega 2. Lets dive right in shall we!
Samsung’s Galaxy Mega 2 is the successor to last year’s Galaxy Mega smartphones. Last year the Galaxy Mega came in two sizes, a 5.8-inch model and a 6.3-inch model, this year there will be only one model. The single model that is being released this year meets last years two models in the middle when it comes to size, packing a 6-inch display. As much as we hate the word, the Galaxy Mega 2 is definitely in Phablet territory at 6 inches. That 6-inch display is 720 x 1280p, nothing too impressive but it will do for most regular users. As for the rest of the specs, the Galaxy Mega 2 has an 8MP rear-facing camera with an LED flash and a 2.1MP front-facing camera for all those selfies you will be taking. As for internals, the Galaxy Mega 2 has 16GB of expandable storage, 1.5GB of RAM, and a 1.5GHz processor that has yet to be named.
Some other important things to take note of pertaining to the Galaxy Mega 2 is that it indeed does have LTE capabilities and will be available in two colors, “Cosmic Black” and “Blizzard White”. The Samsung website that the Galaxy Mega popped up on was a Thailand website so it will be going on sale there obviously, but other availability such as the United States is completely unknown at the moment.
If Samsung’s Galaxy Mega 2 peaks your interest then be sure to stay tuned to Android Headlines as we will keep you posted on any new details that arise about the device. You can also have a look at the official listing of the device on the Thailand website here, be aware that you will have to use Google Translate to read it unless you happen to speak Thai that is.

Carrier exclusives can be disappointing, but they can spell big business for the companies. Given the right carrier choice, the OEM can see a lift in sales for their product and quite possibly even gain some easy marketing. Given the right phone, a carrier can see a rise in subscribers. Although Sony is pretty much absent from the U.S. market in terms of smartphones, here’s why choosing T-Mobile as an exclusive carrier to offer their newest flagship was a smart choice over other OEM’s.
T-mobile may not have the largest network in terms of subscribers, but they do have the fastest growing network in terms of subscribers. T-Mobile has consecutively added more subscribers to their network for at least the last few quarters, which opens up plenty of potential growth for Sony. It’s true that perhaps putting the phone on multiple networks could have given Sony more of a chance at selling the Z3, but if they had to choose just one T-Mobile seems to be the best choice, and with larger networks like AT&T and Verizon both those carriers already have a large marketing push towards other brands, Apple’s iPhone being one of them. Those carriers also don’t allow for upgrades as often. T-Mobile on the other hand has competitive sets of plan offerings that make it easy for customers to get their hands on new phones, with upgrade availability happening often through T-mobile’s Jump which lets you upgrade every six months, and although Sony isn’t releasing a new flagship every six months, they are releasing a new one twice a year, which fits nicely into the “upgrade anytime you want” mantra and time frame that T-Mobile has been spinning.
Throwing up the Z3 onto T-Mobile’s network now leaves Jump customers open to swap out and potentially get the Z4 when it releases, considering Sony launches it on T-Mobile like they’re doing with the Z3. Before I get ahead of myself though, let’s get back to the Z3 itself. Sony has the opportunity to really market themselves with T-Mobile. T-Mobile has an extremely outspoken CEO, and they’re often in the media. I think it’s safe to say that they are probably talked about more than other carriers right now. With potentially more press than the other big 3 wireless providers, Sony has an opportunity for the Xperia Z3 to get more press also, and more exposure is definitely something they need for their handsets in the U.S. market. Besides exposure, and the potential for plenty of new fans of the Sony brand thanks to T-Mobile’s continued growth, if the Xperia Z3 becomes a hit on the T-Mobile network they can set themselves up for a launch of the Z4 next year, and thus have gained what could be a large number of new customers. This of course could depend on how well they market the Xperia Z3. If the Z3 is a hit with customers that are on Jump, and if Sony releases the Z4 on T-Mobile as well, they’re opening up an opportunity for subscribers to update, assuming those customers haven’t already used two upgrades that year.
They could have chosen AT&T as an exclusive carrier offering, as they do have more subscribers, but as the exclusivity on the Amazon Fire phone has taught us, just having a large subscriber base like AT&T doesn’t guarantee that you’ll sell a lot of phones. There’s more to it than that. It also feels like Sony could be looking at more than just trying to sell a lot of phones with the Z3 too though, like they might be attempting to set themselves up for an increased number in future device sales of yet unreleased products, which the combination of T-Mobile’s fast growth and the Jump program for upgrading multiple times in a year can offer. That is if they play their cards right, and if T-Mobile continues adding the most subscribers on a quarterly basis like they have been doing.

Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge a couple of weeks ago at Berlin at the IFA show. At the time, Samsung didn’t disclose the release dates or pricing for these devices. Since then, we’ve seen various networks announce the availability of these two high end handsets. Now, the Note Edge has popped up at the FCC being certified for the Japanese market. There are two models here, the SCL24 (for network operator KDDI) and SC-01G (for NTT Docomo). The Japanese mobile market is different to many others across the world in that there is no 2G network support. Indeed, there hasn’t been a 2G-only mobile ‘phone sold in Japan for over seven years. Seven years! Japan’s 3G networks are supported by LTE and the Note 4 and Note Edge will fit right in, so let’s refresh ourselves on these two devices.
The Note 4 and Note Edge have similar specifications but both are absolutely at the top end. Each device is powered by a quad core 2.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor equipped with 3 GB of RAM. It has 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage plus a MicroSD card, a 16 MP opticially stabilised read camera, high speed networking via Cat 6 LTE, 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1. There’s also Samsung’s heart rate sensor and of course the S-Pen. Each has a very high resolution screen, but here’s where the two devices differ. The Note 4 has a conventional, if insanely sharp 1,440 by 2,560 pixel 5.7-inch AMOLED display. The Edge has a slightly smaller 5.6-inch screen with even more pixels, at 1,600 by 2,560, but as you look at the front of the device, the screen curves around the edge. This space may be used for notifications, control buttons and similar as well as part of the ordinary full screen. If Samsung’s software uses some clever trickery, and here I’m thinking along the lines of the Moto Display, this could make the Note Edge’s innovation truly exceptional. We’ll have to wait and see how the Edge’s software hangs together in day to day use.
We’ve no word on when the Galaxy Note Edge will be launched with either KDDI or NTT Docomo, but we know it’s coming in early October to other markets so we reckon some time in the next three weeks. What do our readers think? The Note Edge’s distinctive design is more interesting than the conventional Samsung Galaxy Note 4, would it be worth it? Let us know in the comments below.

Samsung is now listing the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 on the official Samsung site for Thailand, which may be about as close to an official announcement as we will get. The Galaxy Mega 2 is the successor to the Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy Mega 5.8 and has a 6-inch screen that falls in the middle of its predecessors. That big screen runs at 1280 x 720 resolution.
Powering the Galaxy Mega 2 is a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, though it is unclear whether Samsung is using their own Exynos chip. Supporting the screen and processor is 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, though that can be expanded via microSD cards. For cameras, the device gets an 8MP rear-facing unit and a 2.1MP front-facing camera.
Samsung includes some of the features and tweaks found on other recently released devices, like their Ultra Power Saving Mode. The Galaxy Mega 2 comes with Android 4.4 KitKat installed.
Thus far, Thailand is the only country where Samsung is making the device available, though other Asian countries will likely follow. No official announcement has been made about availability in other markets.

Social media is an important addition to both consumers and businesses alike. It acts as a great tool to reach new people, customers and lost friends. With the likes of Facebook and Twitter becoming iconic beacons in the social networking sphere it was no surprise that Google wanted in. This led to Google back in 2011 launching Google+ (although back then it was known as Google Circles) which strangely began with an invite system (sound familiar?). Since then the social platform has grown into a rather decent social network tool allowing users to share posts, reshare, +1 and follow and it provides a good stream of information from friends and strangers. However unlike the other big social networks available, one aspect of Google+ users did not seem to like was its compulsory sign-up. To use Facebook or Twitter you have to go to the site, click sign-up and actively join the network. In contrast, since January 2012 users who signed up to a Google account (Gmail for instance) were automatically signed-up to Google+. There was no obvious way around this and many saw this as Google trying to force users to use the social platform and generate an artificially high ‘user-base’.
However, more recently we have seen steps by Google to try and distance themselves from compulsory forcing users to sign up to Google+. Only last week it was reported Hangouts (Google’s Skype-like service) no longer needed users to sign up for Google+ to use the service. Now, it seems Google have abandoned the automatic sign-up completely. From now on when you sign up to any of Google’s services (Gmail, Google Docs, YouTube etc) you won’t be automatically prompted to sign-up to Google+. The sign-up page will still appear as usual although alongside the ‘Create your profile’ link will be a ‘No thanks’ link which allows you to continue to use the service you signed up for, but opt out of Google+. Many are seeing this (and the other segregation of services like Hangouts) as further proof of the slow demise of Google+. Rumors of the death of Google’s social network began in April when Vic Gundotra left the company.
Since then the rumors have intensified with each passing Google move. However in reality, the change to both hangouts and the mandatory Google+ sign-up are probably not evidence of the end of the social network but instead more an example of Google’s intention for growth. It is far more likely Google have made these moves to actually open the platforms up and allow users who simply don’t want Google+ to still use the additional Google services. It is understandable that originally Google might have forced users to sign-up for Google+ as a means to get users using the platform. However, now there is not really a need for Google to force users as the platform is somewhat established. Now Google probably wants users to try the newer services like Hangouts and separating the entities will allow for a much wider audience to use them. What do you think? Is this a good move by Google? Does this reinforce the Google+ death rumor or simply good for Google business?

Cloud storage apps are becoming better and better as well as offering more and more free storage as time goes on. One of these cloud storage apps is Microsoft’s official one, called OneDrive, which currently offers free users 15GB of storage. That’s pretty darn generous if you ask us, but apparently Microsoft is feeling extra generous today as they are offering free users of OneDrive the opportunity to double their free cloud storage from 15GB to 30GB.
How you go about doubling your free cloud storage from 15GB to 30GB is pretty simple. All you have to do is enable the “camera roll” feature in the OneDrive app. This feature is essentially an automatic photo upload feature, whenever you take a picture on your phone it will be uploaded to OneDrive. Once you have the camera roll feature enabled you will have a whopping 30GB of free storage in OneDrive. It’s worth mentioning that Google Drive, Google’s cloud storage app, only offers 15GB of free cloud storage, heck, it’s more than almost all other cloud storage services offer for free.
If you read the official blog post by Microsoft that let the world know about this promotion, you will quickly learn that this was purposely done at this exact time. What do we mean by this? Well the title of Microsoft’s blog post is “Hey iPhone Users…You Can Now Get 30 GB of Free Storage with OneDrive”. As you can see, Microsoft created this promotion at this time to coincide with the iPhone 6 launch so that people with their new iPhone would be tempted to download the OneDrive app on their new iPhone 6 and use it. A very clever move on Microsoft’s part. Oh and by the way, don’t let the title of Microsoft’s blog post fool you folks, this promotion works on Android and Windows Phone as well, not just iOS.
Now that Microsoft has done this, it’s time to sit back and see how long it takes other cloud storage services to offer something similar. If you want to get in on this free 30GB of storage offer but don’t have the OneDrive app installed on your phone then follow this link to be taken to the app on the Google Play Store. Enjoy your free storage!

Writing concept posts is great fun, such as the HTC M9 we featured a week and a half ago. And this time we have another set of beautiful HTC One (M9) concept renders by Ashik Empro together with some information on what he’d like to see under the skin. Ashik’s specification mirrors HTC’s trend for putting slightly below bleeding edge hardware inside a beautiful body and he has asked for the device to be powered by a quad core 2.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor backed up by 3 GB of RAM, which compares with a quad core 2.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor for the M8 (upped to 2.5 GHz for some Asian markets) and 2 GB of memory.
The M9 will have a slightly bigger screen at 5.2-inch and 1,440 by 2,560 pixel resolution, compared with the 5.0-inch, 1,080 by 1,920 pixel screen on the current HTC One. The M9 will be available with a choice of 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB internal storage options too. The cameras get an upgrade too, with the rear camera set now featuring an optically stabilised 13 MP main unit with an 8 MP duo companion camera. The front camera will remain at 5 MP resolution. And the device will be powered by a 3,200 mAh battery. The renders look stunning, especially the red model (I have a preference for red devices or at least red cases) but I’d like to draw attention to Ashik’s processor specification as this is a little different to what I’d be expecting. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the Snapdragon 805. In terms of processing power and efficiency, it’s expected to behave in an identical way to the Snapdragon 801, but at higher clock speeds. No problem here, but Android L is coming and it’ll support 64-bit architecture.
I’d rather see the device jump to a 64-bit processor so as to take advantage of this. At the moment based on what Qualcomm and Nvidia have said about their 64-bit chipsets, I’d like to replace the Snapdragon 805 with the Snapdragon 810. The Nvidia K1 is reckoned to be the current king of the hill when it comes to chipsets, but this is because the Snapdragon 810 hasn’t been released yet. This is a big.LITTLE processor operating a pair of quad core processors, four Cortex-A57s and four Cortex-A53s, just like one of the processors we’ll find in the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. It’s reported to offer an improvement of between 25% to 55% in performance compared with the Snapdragon 805 but draws around 20% less power. For most people, most of the time, mobile processors are already quick enough but drawing less power is clearly a win situation. Hit us up in the comments to let us know what you think of these pictures. Make mine the red one!
