Android Wear Watches Get Marshmallow in “Coming Months,” Watch Urbane LTE Already has It

Hey, did you know that the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow? Well, it does. It’s the first Android Wear watch to do so, in fact. With that in mind, are you now wondering when your Android Wear device will receive the update? We have a vague answer.

According to Google, who outlined some of the changes in API 23 for Android Wear (API 23 = Marshmallow) through an announcement that API 23 was now available for Android Wear, the rest of the Android Wear watches on the planet will see an update to Marshmallow and API 23 over the “coming months.” Again, the new Urbane is already running Android 6.0, but you have months to wait. Got it?

As for what’s new in API 23, we talked a bit about it at the end of last week, after Google posted support docs that highlight new features. In general, we will see external speaker support, support for Intel x86 (TAG Heuer Connected runs an Intel chip), resource qualifiers for both round and notround, and a new permissions model.

Hey, John Legere, What do You Think About Sprint’s New 50% Deal?

After hyping an upcoming “major” announcement for this morning, Sprint went ahead and announced the “Biggest Wireless Offer in U.S. History.” The plan is a 50% slashing of all of the major US carriers’ plans, but also includes up to $650 per line to pay off early termination fees, should you leave your current carrier of choice and join Sprint. It certainly adds up to low prices, plus it comes on the heels of Sprint announcing its new LTE Plus network.

While we have already seen our readers react, there is another reaction that was guaranteed to be entertaining. We are talking about John Legere’s, of course, T-Mobile’s CEO who always likes giving it to Sprint and the rest of his competitors. However, his Sprint battles almost always seem to be the best of the bunch, since Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure is willing to fire back.

Here is what Legere had to say, through a series of Tweets that were meant to mock the countdown Sprint used leading up to today’s announcements.

unnamed

unnamed (1)

Now, each carrier offers their own sets of incentives in their own way, so I’m not about to sit here and say, “Yeah, T-Mobile has the best this or that!” With that said, that point 4 he makes about the $36 activation fee, which is indeed in Sprint’s fine print, seems a bit crazy. You bring a family over and you are paying over $100 out of pocket just in activations. Maybe it’s worth that out of pocket expensive to have a 50% discount in your rate? I’ll let you decide that.

Anyways, I guess we’ll sit back and see if Verizon or AT&T have anything to say. (They probably don’t.)

Samsung Intros BRITECELL Camera Tech During Investors Forum

During Samsung’s annual Investors Forum, the company took time to detail upcoming plans for mobile photography, specifically on its upcoming 2016 top-tier devices. Announced during the slideshow, Samsung detailed BRITECELL camera technology, promising enhanced light sensitivity in low light conditions with less color artifact.

According to the head of the Samsung LSI marketing team Kyushik Hong, this technology helps reduce the camera module size by up to 17%, allowing for slimmer devices, while maintaining low light sensitivity at 1.12µm. Speaking on the desires of consumers, Hong stated, “As for the camera, people want higher resolution and brighter image. And naturally, that requires the bigger pixels to capture more light into the single pixel. But still with need to accommodate this immediate sensor into very small compactor so that it can comfortably tuck into very sleek and the slim phone design in these days.”

Beyond this info, not too much technical data was lifted from the announcement, but usually, ahead of a smartphone launch with new technology, Samsung releases plenty of more specific information.

Should we expect BRITECELL in the Galaxy S7? It seems like a safe bet, as Samsung has invested heavily on its in-house technology. This year, however, Samsung utilized both in-house ISOCELL sensors and Sony IMX sensors for its flagship devices. Regardless of what they choose in 2016, you can bet that the camera on the Galaxy S7 will probably be pretty great for your mobile photography needs.

Google Play App Listings Will Say if an App has Ads in Early 2016

By early next year, the apps you consider downloading through Google Play will specify if they contain advertisements. Google notified developers today that they have until January 11, 2016 to sign into the developer console and declare whether or not their apps contain ads and that misrepresenting ad presence violates the Google Play Developer Program Policies.

The label will likely show up in a similar location to the label that states whether or not an app has in-app purchases (seen above), making it clear to you and I when we are about to install an app if it has ads.

If you are a developer and you need to know how to stay in compliance, check out the link below.

Also, here is the email being sent to developers:

Hello Google Play Developer,

At Google I/O, we launched “ad-supported” labels for apps in the Designed for Families program. Today, we’re announcing the expansion of this program to all apps on Google Play. Early next year, users will start to see the “Ads” label on apps that contain advertising, both inside and outside Designed for Families.

By January 11, 2016, you must sign in to the Play Developer Console and declare whether your apps contain ads (such as ads delivered through third party ad networks, display ads, native ads, and/or banner ads). After this date, the ads declaration will be required to make any updates to your apps. Please note that misrepresenting ad presence violates Google Play Developer Program Policies and may lead to suspension. You can visit our help center to learn more.

While developers are responsible for accurately declaring ad presence in their apps, Google may verify this at any time and display the “Ads” label if appropriate.

If you feel your app has been incorrectly flagged for containing ads, please contact our policy support team.

Regards,
The Google Play Team

LG’s Mobile Payment Solution to Launch as Early as Next Month

LG’s mobile payments solution, reportedly called G Pay, is said to launch next month in select regions. First discussed in mid-October, LG officials state, “We will sign a deal with some of the country’s major card companies before officially launching our mobile payment platform.”

According to Korean outlets, the service will first launch in South Korea, with LG partnering with two of the biggest card companies, Shinhan Card and KB Kookmin Card. There is no word yet of a US launch, or with partnerships between US card companies.

From a consumer standpoint, another proprietary payments system exclusive to a single lineup of devices can be overwhelming. Currently, US consumers can choose between Android Pay, Samsung Pay, and Apple Pay, if they have the necessary hardware and a supported financial institution. It’s not that LG should not create G Pay, since they have every right to, but at this point, does it not seem a little too late to become relevant in this sector? Each service already available serves their niche well – Android Pay works on any Android device with NFC (including LG devices), Samsung utilizes MST on top of NFC for top-tier Samsung devices, and Apple Pay services iOS devices. As you can see, we already have systems in place that work fine.

If LG was to launch a payment solution for the US, what are a few key features you would like to see in order to use it? Proprietary technology? Support for your bank? Shoot your opinion down below.

Google is Now Letting You “Stream” Apps Without Ever Installing Them

Back in April, Google started indexing apps in Google Search to show relevant information from them in your results, even if you didn’t have the apps installed. Today, they are taking that experience a step further with the introduction of a couple of new ideas, one of which may blow your mind a bit.

First, in building off of the indexing of apps, Google has taken results a step further, by not only showing results that have matching web content (which was the case before), but by also showing information from apps that don’t have a matching web presence. This is a pretty big move if you think about it, because not all apps have web portals where they include the information that is found inside their apps. This move allows Google to show information from apps that are stand-alone properties.

Second, Google is beginning to test the idea of being able to “stream” an app through Google Search without actually installing it. You’ll see this in the GIF below, but basically, Google is using a new “cloud-based” technology that allows them to open an app as a search result, creating an experience similar to what you would see if you had the app installed on your device.

If you search for something and the results turn up an app option with “Stream” next to it, that means you can stream the app, as long as you are on WiFi.

Check it out.

google search app stream

How cool is that?

Google makes it sound like we are in the early, experimental stages of this new feature in Google Search, so you won’t find a whole bunch of apps doing this just yet. For now, they are working with HoteTonight, Chimani, Daily Horoscope, and New York Subway.

Google Camera Receiving Update for Android 6.0+ Devices, Includes New Interface

Google Camera, Mountain View’s in-house shooter software for Android devices, is receiving an update to build 3.1. Inside, the new UI that is showcased on the latest Nexus devices will be available to all who download and use the application on devices running Android 6.0+.

With this updated UI, switching between camera settings is simplified, thanks to the reworking of button placement. Now, your HDR and Flash settings will be easily accessible, not hidden inside of pullout menus and additional “three dot” buttons.

This update is rolling out now to a small group of users, and should reach all supported devices over the next few days.

Sprint Intros the LTE Plus Network, Available Today in 77 Major Markets

Today, Sprint announced the LTE Plus network, a combination of its advanced cellular technologies and cell site optimization. In the announcement, written by Sprint’s CTO Dr. John Saw, the carrier lays out the benefits of LTE Plus, which should have customers seeing faster service with double the network capacity and speed, stronger service with “smart antenna technology,” and more reliable service thanks to the utilization of three bands of spectrum (1.9GHz, 800MHz, and 2.5GHz).

With carrier aggregation and a signal processing technique called beamforming, customers located near cell edges and indoors should see increased speeds and reliability of service, with peak speeds in excess of 100Mbps on devices that are capable of such data speeds. According to Dr. Saw, Sprint is proud to be one of the first operators in the world to roll out two key functionalities of LTE Advanced: Carrier aggregation and Beamforming.

Benefits to Customers

  • Faster service with double the network capacity and speed, and peak speeds in excess of 100Mbps on capable devices
  • Stronger service with smart antenna technology that extends the cell signal further at 2.5GHz
  • More reliable service utilizing three bands of spectrum – 1.9GHz for broad coverage, 800MHz for better indoor service, and 2.5GHz for even faster data speeds

Markets of Availability

As shown in the below map, Sprint’s LTE Plus network is available today in 77 major markets. A few of the big ones listed are the SF Bay Area, San Diego, New York City, North LA, Portland, Seattle, San Antonio, Orlando, Washington DC, Chicago, Atlanta, Salt Lake City, and basically all other major cities within the United States, including parts of Hawaii.

This announcement is coupled with Sprint’s “biggest wireless offer in history,” which cuts Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile rate plans by 50%. Naturally, there is plenty of tiny text to read along with these offers, so be sure to read up on that post, too, if you plan on making the switch to Sprint.

Sprint’s “Biggest Wireless Offer in History” Slashes Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile Plans by 50%

Yesterday, we told you that Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure had a big announcement to make. This morning, he made it in the form of a 50% off deal if you bring your number to Sprint from AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile. Sprint is calling it the “Biggest Wireless Offer in U.S. History.”

I would call the deal simple, but I took a look at the mile-long terms and am not so sure anything about this could be simple, especially when you start talking about cutting prices in half from three different carriers who all offer wildly different plans at varying prices and with different amounts of data. So here is the deal, in the simplest terms I can explain it.

Sprint is going to cut 50% off the plans that your carrier currently offers if you port your number over to them. That includes 50% cuts on both data buckets and the monthly access/line charges. Sprint is also willing to pay up to $650 for anyone who switches, meaning they will cover your early termination fees up to $650 per line.

New Sprint customers can sign-up for this offer from November 20 (this Friday) through January 7, 2016. The discounted rates will last through Jan. 8, 2018.

You’ll notice that said “new” customers get this deal. To “reward” existing customers, Sprint is giving away free tablets (while supplies last) with one year of free service, as long as they sign a 2-year contract.

Here are Sprint-made images showing the discount you would get off of each carrier’s plans:

2410102_AT26T_5025_Rate_Plan_Highres

2410114_Verizon_5025_Rate_Plan_Highres

2410108_T_Mobile_5025_Rate_Plan_Highres

And bullet points on the deal taken directly from Sprint’s press release:

  • This is a worry-free offer. Customers have 28 days to experience Sprint service. If they are not satisfied, customers can return their device with no restocking fee.
  • Visit your local Sprint store, Sprint Store at RadioShack, www.sprint.com or call 1-800-Sprint1 to switch.
  • Get your new device with Sprint Lease, iPhone Forever, Sprint Easy Pay installment billing or pay full retail price for the device. Or bring your own compatible device.
  • Customers must port one line, and can add up to 9 additional lines on the account.
  • Customers must choose from the 50 percent off rate plans available from their current carrier.
  • Cricket and MetroPCS customers also can switch and save 50 percent off their parent company’s postpaid rates.
  • 50 percent off pricing remains valid until Jan. 8, 2018, for activations between Nov. 20, 2015, and Jan. 7, 2016.
  • Sprint will pay your switching fees up to $650 per line via an American Express® Reward Card after online registration and phone turn-in.

Here is a kid explaining it, because Sprint claims that it’s so simple, a kid can understand it. After looking at it all, I certainly hope so for the sake of Sprint employees who have to try and sort all of this out.

Again, the deal goes live on November 20.

Amazon Announces 8 Days of Holiday Deals Leading Up to Black Friday

Next week, we celebrate Thanksgiving before setting off on holiday shopping excursions throughout Black Friday, a day dedicated to being suckered into places like Best Buy or Costco because they are allegedly selling a 50-inch TV for $100. It’s also a day to sit online, skipping the lines and getting suckered into similar deals through online dealers. Think about it, though. What’s a better situation – a) standing in line for hours in the cold to not buy 1 of the 3 $100 TVs or b) sitting on your couch in PJs, with a whiskey-filled coffee in one-hand, not getting 1 of the 3 TVs that the same place allegedly sold online? I know which one I would go for, which brings us to this post that took way too many words to get into.
