5 Reasons the Nexus 5X is Worth Buying

As we continue giving you 5 easy-to-digest reasons to buy this year’s top phones, we set our sights next on Google’s littler Nexus, the Nexus 5X. After reading my review, you may be a bit surprised to see this phone featured, but I have high hopes for the other Nexus because after all, it is a Nexus. All of my gripes tended to stem from software frustrations, almost all of which should be fixable. And yep, with a Nexus, you get timely updates that may have already addressed our issues.

With that in mind, here are 5 reasons the Nexus 5X is worth buying.

1. It’s a Nexus.

Funny how after all these years, being a “Nexus” is still so important. Because most of the Android manufacturers, many of which who have been making Android phones for 6+ years, still can’t get software updates right or mess up the whole experience with garbage skins on top of Android, the Nexus line remains our favorite.

With the Nexus 5X, just like with the Nexus 6P, you get Google’s vision for a mobile operating system. You also get updates to Android faster than anyone. Those two things are incredibly important for a number of reasons. On one hand, Google’s vision for Android has matured nicely over the past few years. Not only does it look incredible and adhere to the latest Material Design standards, but it’s also evolving into a powerhouse, with speed and features baked in that were once only in certain skins or 3rd party apps. Second, those timely updates mean you have the latest security patches and the latest features before anyone else.

Again, we’re well over six years into this Android world and only Google has been able to continue to get this all right. They are doing that with Nexus.

2. That camera is solid.

For the first time in Nexus history, Google has introduced pretty incredible cameras. With the Nexus 5X, you get the exact same high-end camera that is in the 6P, only without the higher price tag. Well, it is missing a higher framerate in slow-mo videos and burst shooting, but the sensor is identical, as are the results.

You can see a full camera write-up in our Nexus 5X review, but the basics are this. The quality of the imagery, especially when the camera decides to go into HDR mode, are quite impressive. It’s solid in low light, but certainly excels in macro and well-lit situations. If you needed a gripe, I’d say it’s in the speed of the camera app loading, though once it loads, that slowness doesn’t seem to be as much of an issue.

3. Small phones live!

As a member of Team Non-Whale Phone, I can’t help but love the size of the Nexus 5X. It’s similar in size to the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which to me, are perfectly sized. This phone can be handled with a single hand without an issue, but it’s also big enough should you decide to get into a video or media moment. Google also used lighter materials (Read: plastics) throughout and covered the back in a soft matte finish to make it less slippery.

This phone is a joy to hold and navigate.

4. Talk about affordable punch.

The Nexus 5X debuted at $379 (16GB) and $429 (32GB), putting it comfortably in the “affordable” phone category. It’s not the cheapest dude on the block, but it’s guaranteed to be on a shortlist of phones if you only have upwards of $400 to spend. At that price, you get a 5.2-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 808 processor, 2GB RAM, 16/32GB storage, 12.3MP camera, 2700mAh battery, and an awesome fingerprint reader. There are some other options (like the Moto X Pure Edition) that have slightly better specs and a similar price, but they aren’t Nexus phones.

Also, Google has already run a couple of holiday-related deals where you could get the 16GB model for as low as $299. Don’t be surprised if you see those regularly over the next year. Paying full price for a Nexus 5X may be a rarity.

5. Fingerprint reader game is tight.

The fingerprint readers in the Nexus 5X and 6P are the best in the business, if you ask me. Not only are they insanely fast, but they have some other tricks up their sleeves as well. For one, you can train them in 6 touches. Six! Samsung, Apple, LG, Sony, and OnePlus all ask for at least double that, if not triple, in order to learn your fingerprint. Outside of training, they allow you to unlock your phone without ever pressing a button, since the readers are touch sensitive, sort of in a capacitive way. Oh, and I haven’t even mentioned their location, which is the best implementation of any. Google placed these on the back, right where your index fingers sits each time you pick up your phone. It’s the natural spot that requires no extra movement or work, something that can’t be said for home button placements. But maybe more importantly than all of that, they are also extremely accurate and rarely mis-read your finger.

There you have it, the 5 reasons you should consider buying the Nexus 5X.

Google Posts First Pixel C “ryu” Factory Images

Now that the Pixel C, Google’s high-end non-Nexus tablet, is available, we were wondering how exactly the search giant would handle updates for it. Would they arrive similarly to the Nexus line, which means factory images accompany over-the-air files? To answer one part of that question – yes, we are getting factory images.

This afternoon, Google posted the first two factory images for the Pixel C in the form of Android 6.0.1 files for builds MXB48J and MXB48K. You’ll notice on the factory image page that the device is referred to as both “ryu” and “dragon.” Codenames, folks, codenames!

If you own the Pixel C and need factory images, they are there for the taking. Binaries too.

Dead Zebra Details the Android Holiday “Bingle Bear” Collectible

Dead Zebra, the producer of the Android mini collectibles, announced its plan for the holiday season this year, and that plan is Bingle Bear. Bingle Bear is a red, elf-like bear creature of sorts, who appears to be an employee or possible owner of the Bingle Workshop. The mythology behind this creature is currently unclear, but he’s here to spread holiday cheer and that is all that matters right now.

As you can see, Binglee Bear features an adorable little elf outfit, complete with wrapped Christmas present. He has a little hat, cute red and white stockings, and a big fancy belt buckle.

Bingle Bear will be up for sale on the Dead Zebra Shop starting the morning of December 10th at 11am EST, with shipping starting on Monday the 14th.

Split Screen UI “In the Works,” Likely to Debut on Android N

During a recent AMA of sorts on reddit, a member of the Pixel C team was fielding questions from the Android community. When asked about Android’s ability to run a split screen UI, where a user can have two apps running simultaneously, the Googler mentioned something quite interesting.

According to Andrew of the team, Google is already working hard on features for Android “N.” He states that split screen functionality is “in the works,” which means that it might be likely we see the feature debut alongside Google’s next version of Android.

As for mentioning other features we might see included in the release of Android N, Andrew says Google does not want to spoil any surprises.

When should we expect Android N? Good question. Usually, Google tends to release a new version of Android each year, except for one time where they gave us two servings of Jelly Bean. It’s possible Google will showcase what’s next for Android at 2016’s Google I/O in San Francisco, with a release later in the year like we saw this year with Marshmallow and last year with Lollipop.

For those in need of split screen action right now, you can tweak your OS via editing the build.prop to enable it, but do note that this feature is incredibly buggy and hidden for a very good reason.

Google Wallet Now Lets You Send Money Through a Phone Number

Google Wallet, the former Google payment app that is now some sort of hybrid friend-to-friend payment service, added a new feature today that should make sending money to others easier than ever. Through an update to the app that should arrive over the “next few days,” you will be able to send money to anyone in your contact list, as long as they have a phone number. That’s right, you don’t even need to have an email for them.

How does that work? When you send someone money through Google Wallet via phone number, Google will send them a text message with a secure link. By opening that secure link, they can quickly enter their debit card info to claim the money, which should then arrive “within minutes.”

Cool? Anyone using Google Wallet these days?

DROID Turbo 2 Soak Test Incoming, Any Chance It’s Marshmallow?

Late this morning, Motorola began inviting owners of the DROID Turbo 2 to a soak test of an “early preview of a new software release.” Those are the only details at this time, but with the Moto X Pure Edition getting its Marshmallow update this week, you have to wonder if this isn’t a sign that the Turbo 2 is right behind it.

Then again, this could just be an update to include WiFi Calling, which was introduced to the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge earlier this week as well. Maybe I’m just being hopeful after last year’s disastrous update schedule for the original Turbo to Lollipop, but it seems like it would be a good idea for Motorola and Verizon to prioritize this new flagship. In the end, if these two can’t even do things in a timely manner for their in-house Android flagship that is often promoted above all others, what’s the point in even producing one?

As we learn more, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Cheers M and M!

DROID Turbo 2 Gets Special Star Wars Custom Options in Moto Maker Tomorrow

UPDATE 12/10:  Verizon, this morning, told us that starting tomorrow, December 11, fans can create special Turbo 2 Star Wars edition phones using Moto Maker. Options will include “custom color palates, and backs based on the Poe Dameron, Rey, BB-8, a First Order Storm Trooper, and Kylo Ren characters.” Verizon will also launch an app to Google Play with exclusive wallpapers.

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens opening in days, it only makes sense that Verizon and Motorola would use their DROID licensing to its full potential. In the coming days, Verizon and Moto will launch DROID Turbo 2 “Star Wars Editions”with 5 Verizon-exclusive wallpapers.

According to info being sent to Verizon reps, additional information on how Turbo 2 owners can get these 5 wallpapers will arrive “soon,” more than likely through the @DroidLanding Twitter account. At this time, we aren’t sure if they will all be made available to current Turbo 2 owners or if this will only be a special option through new orders in Moto Maker. The image below makes it sounds like this could be a Moto Maker deal, though wallpapers aren’t currently a part of the Turbo 2’s customization experience.

We’ll update this as we have more, but for now, be on the lookout for @DroidLanding to go active again.

Chromecast Audio Gets Multi-Room Streaming, High-Res Audio Support

Chromecast Audio, Google’s dongle that turns a speaker into a WiFi-ready tune shed, is receiving a big update this week with two major features. Actually, the update should start arriving today with hi-res audio support and the ability to play music to multiple rooms in a house, assuming they all have Chromecast Audio devices in them.

With hi-res audio, Google is hoping to deliver 96KHz/24bit lossless audio playback, which is technically “higher-than-CD-quality” sound that can be played through your currently-owned speakers.

As for the multiple room magic, Chromecast Audio has essentially taken on the Sonos approach to music, where you can play music throughout a home, all controlled from a single phone. If you have multiple Chromecast Audios, you can group them together to play the same music at the same time everywhere. This is all controlled from the Chromecast app on your phone, but you can also setup guest access to allow anyone at your house with a phone to become a DJ of sorts.

The update should happen in the background, but you’ll need to grab the latest Chromecast app to start playing.

Google Photos Update Introduces Shared Albums

Every photo service on mobile or web seems to be worried about the same thing when it comes to collaborative efforts. What I mean is that they all assume you host tons of parties or partake in various group activities where you take lots of pictures of those happenings with your friends and family. The problem here lies in the aftermath, where everyone took pictures but no one has an easy way to share them. How do we fix this? Google Photos thinks it has an answer with shared albums arriving in the latest update.

With shared albums you get the simple sharing that you have always enjoyed with Google Photos, only in album format that friends and family can join and contribute to. Once an album has been shared with someone, they can add videos and photos to it, but also receive notifications when someone else adds new photos or videos to it. Other contributed photos and videos can be saved to your own library as well.

To create and share an album, you simply select the photos you want to make into an album, tap the “share” button, and then choose to create a “New shared album.” Send it off to others and hope that they add in their best shots and memories.

The update is rolling out today on Android, iOS, and the web.

Pixel C and Keyboard Unboxing and Tour!

Android tablets are not something we talk much about these days, because unfortunately for Android tablets, most aren’t really worth talking about. In fact, there aren’t many manufacturers even making them anymore, so our job of ignoring them has become pretty easy. But here or there, someone introduces one worth a look. Like, we gave the Galaxy View tablet/TV monitor/wtf-is-that-plastic-stand-thingy a short look because at least it was doing something different. And that’s why we are about to take a short journey with Google’s new Pixel C tablet.

Originally announced back at the Nexus event in September, the Pixel C is now available from Google at a starting price of $499. As the name suggests, this isn’t a Nexus. This is a Pixel, which means 100% Google. Google didn’t partner with LG or HTC or Motorola to build this thing – they did it all themselves. That’s really what the Pixel family is all about, honestly, a line of products with best-in-class specs and materials that are the vision of Google.

So yeah, we have one in house and are about to unbox it below before getting to a review. Want first impressions? You’ll get those in the clip, but the short version is this. It’s an Android tablet. Android tablets don’t really offer anything particularly interesting on a software front, because Android has never really evolved into a powerhouse tablet operating system. With this device, Google doesn’t seem to have even tried to do anything different as it just runs Android 6.0.1 in a tablet form that we are all used to.

With that said, the hardware is quite nice. It’s an all-metal design with zero logos. If you didn’t know what that multi-colored lightbar was at the top of the back and didn’t know Google made this, you probably would wonder who it was from (HTC, maybe?). Combine that beautiful, mysterious hardware with what may be the real selling point, the sold-separately-for-an-arm-and-two-legs keyboard, and you get a productivity combination unlike anything else on Android at the moment that is in tablet form.

Let’s get to it. Our Pixel C unboxing awaits.
