Don’t Miss These Android Stories: August 14, 2015

What a damn week. I thought last week was busy, but man, all sorts of amazing things popped up this week. Not only did Tim spend a bunch of time with the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+ after Samsung announced them, but they teased their new round watch, Motorola whoopsied on the new Moto 360 and Moto X Pure Edition, we got Hangouts 4.0, I reviewed the new Moto G (3rd gen), we saw what will likely be the LG Nexus 5, and listened to Larry Page tell us that Google is now run by Alphabet (or something). Crazy.

To catch up on the week that was before we get into a half-dozen or so reviews, jump below.

All-Way burger FTW.

Did Motorola Just Tease the New Moto 360 on Instagram?

It’s not a stretch to say that many people have been waiting on the arrival of the next Moto 360 from Motorola. After what appeared to be a massive leak in March from Lenovo’s CEO, to FCC filings just a couple of weeks ago, we should be pretty close to an official unveiling.

Today on Instagram, Motorola posted a short clip featuring a Moto 360 with an unreleased design, but identical to the one detailed back in March. It features the Power button on the top right side of the bezel, as well as lugs to connect the bands. Looking back into previous Moto 360 posts on the account, Motorola has been very good about renders they use for the device, so a slip up like this makes us very curious.

Also featured in the video is a “flat tire” or black bottom portion of the display, where last year Motorola placed the ambient light sensor. It is hard to tell from the previous leak whether this black portion will return this year, but it seems many of us hope that it does not.

We have placed Motorola’s snippet video onto YouTube, just in case they decide to pull the post.

What do you think? Did Moto really just give us our first glimpse at the new Moto 360?

Cheers Samuel!

Google Play Services 7.8 Rolling Out, Includes Mobile Vision API and Nearby Messages API

Google Play Services 7.8 is now rolling out for developers, continuing its mission in allowing developers to “build better apps.” In this release, Google has new APIs that focus on its previously released Nearby Connections API, as well as a new API called Mobile Vision

In the Mobile Vision API, developers can use the Face API to build applications that not only detect faces, but can recognize if a subject is smiling or not, and to what degree. Smiles are measured from 0.0 to 1.0, with a frown being 0.0 and a full teeth-grinning smile rated at a 1.0. In the below video, Google’s Magnus Hyttsten shows a great example of this Mobile Vision API in action. Also included in the Mobile Vision API is a Barcode API, allowing applications to read barcodes during a live video.

In addition to Mobile Vision, Google introduced the Nearby Messages API, an extension to the existing Nearby Connections. With this, developers can create a bridge via WiFi or Bluetooth signals to multiple devices, allowing them to share a stream of information to one another.

Are you a developer? Check out Google’s video below, as well as the complete announcement on the Android Developers blog.

Robinhood, the Free Stock Trading App, Hits Google Play

Robinhood, the free-to-use stock trading application once only available for iOS, is now downloadable on Google Play. Robinhood axes the necessity to pay firms to manage your financial transactions, putting you in the driver seat of real-time market data and quotes.

Containing a wonderfully Material design, the app makes tracking of stock simplistic with color schemes, indicating the opening and closing of markets. Users can generate their own watchlists from historical data and detailed charts, all protected by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). Even if you are new to trading, the app goes to great length to educate its users on benefits, potential risks, and other factors governing the market.

While trading fees won’t apply, SEC & FINRA regulatory fees may apply in certain transactions.

Interested parties can head over to Google Play and download the app now. Just be ready to fill out a lot of information to get started.

This Could be What the LG Nexus 5 (2015) Will Look Like

Long before devices ever fully materialize in public form, case makers get detailed dimensions and “schematics” of them to help build accessories that are available just as the phones they are made for, launch. We see this made public all the time thanks to companies who post teaser imagery of their upcoming cases, even though the phones they were built for haven’t been announced. The media gets all giggly and hypebeasty about it, claiming “Leak! Leak! Leak!” yet they often times only represent a shape of what the phone could be and rarely show a leak of the actual phone.

And that brings us to today’s topic, the LG Nexus 5 (2015)

This phone hasn’t actually been confirmed on any official level. Right now, all we really have to go on is a codename and some wishy-washy stories out of Korea, yet the following set of images and video claim that the phone could look like what you are seeing here. This is not the actual phone, but these are renders based off of those previously mentioned schematics that are provided to case makers. So what we are getting is the shape of the phone, along with placement of speakers, fingerprint sensor, camera, and flash. This should also show us where things like the headphone jack, SIM tray, mics, and USB Type-C port will sit.

So while this isn’t the phone, it could look very similar. Case makers do need to know exactly where everything is located on a phone so that their cases fit properly. I’m not ready to throw money down on this being the best look at the phone yet, but it’s probably as good as it’s going to get until the phone gets closer to a launch later this year.

Thoughts?

OxygenOS 1.0.2 Update for OnePlus One Includes Stagefright Fix

For anyone running OxygenOS on the OnePlus One, the company highly recommends that you flash the latest update to 1.0.2, containing a patch for the Stagefright exploit. Once installed, you will no longer need to worry about malicious MMS messages compromising your device.

Of course, users will need to flash this update themselves via a recovery, but OnePlus has made the files easily accessible for those who need to perform it. If you need a step-by-step guide on flashing this update to the OnePlus One, you can find that here. And in case you wondered, OnePlus states you do not need to reset your device upon flashing.

Head on over to the OP Forums to grab the zip file and zip.md5.

“What’s Android M Gonna be?” – We Might Find Out Very Soon.

What does the “M” in Android M stand for? WE DON’T KNOW. But we might soon! Googlers Nat and Lo gave us this fun little jingly video this morning, teasing that we might find out within the next week. The description under the clip says “Here’s a little musical hint about our next episode,” so since they tend to do weekly videos, next week is a good bet.

Keep in mind that if they are preparing the next name and statue, that also means that stable Android M will be out, or at least the final preview. Then we move towards the release of new Nexus devices and a whole new wave of updates that will take months and months to arrive on your favorite phones. Fun!

My official guess is Marshmallow.

What’s yours?

AT&T Introduces New Mobile Share Value Plans – Drops Some Prices, Tweaks Some Numbers

This morning, AT&T unwrapped changes to their Mobile Share Value plans, changes that decrease prices here or there, while bumping up data in others. Some of the changes are also just in-between moves that land in the middle of older plans that are now gone.

Mobile Share Value plan options like 1GB ($25) or 3GB ($40) data buckets are now gone and have been replaced by a 2GB $30 option. The 6GB $70 option is gone as well and has been replaced by 5GB for $50. I’ll let you decide if that’s a deal or not.

AT&T also bumped up the $100 data option from 10GB to 15GB and dropped $10 off their 20GB plan, leaving it at $140.

This is how AT&T explained it to us:

  • 300MB for $20 – No changes here for our customers who just need a small amount of data.
  • 2GB for $30 – This replaces our 1GB and 3GB plans for $25 and $40, respectively.
  • 5GB for $50– This replaces our $70 for 6GB plan.
  • 15GB for $100 – This is the big one. For $100 you get 15 GB instead of 10GB. This also includes unlimited calling talk/text to Mexico and Canada at no additional cost
  • 20GB for $140 – This replaces our 20GB for $150 plan. Calls / texts to Mexico and Canada included.
  • 25GB for $170 – This is a new option, great for small businesses with multiple lines.
  • If you need even more data, 30GB, 40GB and 50GB plans are also available. And for business customers, plans up to 200GB are available.

And here is a look at how some of the new plans look with their specific line access fees:

Still confusing.

The new plans go live tomorrow.
