HTC to Make Two Nexus Smartphones in 2016, According to User on Weibo

Stated in a post onto Weibo from a reported “often-reliable leakster,” it is rumored that HTC will partner with Google to create two Nexus smartphones for 2016, just as we saw last year with the LG-made Nexus 5X and Huawei-made Nexus 6P. However, instead of two separate OEMs making the two phones, it will be on HTC’s shoulders alone to deliver the goods.

According to the rumor, the HTC Nexus devices will feature different display sizes – one with a 5″ display and the other with a 5.5″ display. No other specs were listed, but we can safely assume any new Nexus smartphones will run the next version of Android, which has yet to be announced.

HTC is no stranger to the Nexus program, as they were the OEM to create the first Nexus device quite a few years ago. Most recently, HTC manufactured the Nexus 9 tablet, a device with mixed reviews.

January is pretty early to hear about Nexus rumors, but as big fans of the program, and even bigger fans of last year’s Nexus 6P, we are eager to see what Google might have cooking up for 2016. Speaking honestly, we sort of hoped Huawei would get another shot in 2016, but if Google is ready to switch it up yet again, we are genuinely curious if HTC can mount a comeback through the Nexus program.

If HTC is in fact to make two Nexus phones in 2016, does this news excite or disappoint you?

Google Photos Introduces Quick Shortcut to Jump From Camera to Photos

Google Photos, either through an update we didn’t notice or because of a slow server-side rollout, received a feature over the weekend that allows you to add shortcuts to photos taken in your camera that can launch you into Google Photos. That make sense? Let me me explain.

The new feature is showing up in the Assistant panel of the Google Photos app. It looks like the card in the image we featured above and below. See it? The idea is pretty simple here, in that it allows you to quickly jump into Google Photos after a picture is taken instead of the gallery app that is likely set as the default for your phone, assuming you aren’t using a Nexus.

When you tell Google Photos to “Add shortcut,” you’ll then have controls for it in Google Photos’ settings. It’s basically a toggle for on or off. With it toggled on, all you need to do is open your phone’s camera app, snap a picture, and that recently snapped photo will show as a floating icon over your camera UI as a shortcut to the picture you just took. It will open in Google Photos. Get it now?

This is what it looks like:

DEAL: 92% Off XtremeGuard Tempered Glass Screen Protectors

I can’t say that I’ve touched a screen protector in some time, but there is certainly a market and audience for them. If we were to recommend something, at least in the past, we always suggested tempered glass protectors, because of their quality, touch feel, and hardness (8-9H). Should something like that – a screen protector – still interest you, XtremeGuard is hosting an incredible deal on them at the moment.

By adding two to your cart and inputting the code “92OFF,” you’ll get exactly as the coupon suggests, 92% off

Take a look at my screenshot below to see the kinds of savings we’re talking about. I added two $30 Spartan Tempered Glass Screen protectors, and should I buy them, will only pay $4.80.

We’re seeing protectors for phones like the Turbo 2, Nexus 6, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, Galaxy S6, Note 5, Note 4, Galaxy S6 Active, OnePlus 2, Xperia Z5, iPhone 6 and 6s, and a bunch of iPads. Your best bet for finding your particular phone is to search for them in the big search box on XtremeGuard’s site.

Upcoming Fitness-Focused Samsung Wearable Detailed in Photos

It would appear Samsung is preparing yet another wearable for the global market, one more targeted to fitness tracking enthusiasts, according to a leaked set of photos. Much like the Gear S2, the SM-R150 is equipped with a round display with the same rotating bezel. However, at least from what the leaked pictures show, you can detach the body of the watch from the straps and place it on your clothing during workouts or running if you choose.

Reported to possibly feature Samsung’s new Bio Processor, the wearable appears to be able to count repetitions (reps) in a workout, as well as liquid intake. Detailed in one of the photos, the Body Equalizer looks to display weight data, fat data, and even waist measurements.

At this time, there is no information regarding a price, but if Samsung decides to make it a pure activity/fitness tracker, leaving out more of the smartwatch features (notifications, phone calls), it could launch with a lower price tag, making it a good competitor to devices from Garmin and Fitbit.

With MWC coming up, it’s possible this device could see an unveiling, or at least a tease.

DEAL: Grab an Original Nexus 5 32GB for $189

Yeah, yeah, it’s really old at this point, but look, the original Nexus 5 is still being supported by Google. It also runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow pretty flawlessly. This is an Android icon, without a doubt. And you can still own one today, supposedly in “new” condition.

Through a deal over at eBay, you can pick-up the white Nexus 5 with 32GB of storage for just $189.99. Are there better values out there? I honestly don’t know that there are. Sure, the camera isn’t great, but the performance, feel in hand, and overall design of this phone are still almost unmatched.

The deal includes free shipping.

Sony has Plans for MWC as Well, Announces Press Event

Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off in just over a month in Barcelona. We already know that LG is hosting an event and that Samsung will likely do the same to unveil the Galaxy S7. But what about the others in the game? HTC? Sony? This morning, Sony confirmed that it has plans of some sort set aside for the big mobile conference through an invite sent to specific news outlets.

The invite (seen below) doesn’t tease a thing, other than there will be plenty of #SonyMWC hashtagging. Could we see a new flagship Xperia phone? That sort of seems unlikely, considering the fact that Sony just announced the Xperia Z5 line in September. So if not a new Xperia phone, then what?

Great question! Feel free to drop those predictions below.

WhatsApp Ditches Subscription Model, Now 100% Free

WhatsApp, the global messaging phenomenon, announced today that it will no longer charge subscription fees for use of its apps. That means WhatsApp will be 100% free going forward.

In the past, WhatsApp was free to most for the first year of service after sign-up. Once that year long period ended, you needed to pay a $0.99 annual subscription to keep the service going. That’s going away because many of WhatsApp’s users don’t have a credit card and the company is afraid that they’ll lose these users who can’t pay the $1 per year to keep it going.

So does that mean ads are coming? WhatsApp says no, but that they will be testing partnerships with businesses and organizations that “you want to hear from.” That could mean flight notifications in WhatsApp or a bank communicating with you about fraudulent charges on an account. At least, those are the two examples they have provided to us.

Using WhatsApp? Thoughts?
