hangouts_app_icon_material_design

Right now, an update is being pushed to the Hangouts app for Android devices that brings with it minor changes in a few areas.

Although the update is for version 3.0 (from 2.5), there are no dramatic changes:

  • Snooze notifications button moved to top

  • Mint green accents in new areas

  • Long-pressing a message includes View Profile option

  • Improved contact cards (that resemble the new Google Contacts)

LG to launch a smartphone that “stands above the G series”

Motorola’s Punit Soni Takes The Next Step And Leaves The Company For Flipkart

motog_punit_soni

Punit Soni has been an influential team member at Google and Motorola, having spent 8 years at Google since he came on with the company since back in 2007 where he began projects like launching Google News Archive, Google Newspapers, and Google Magazines. Through his time at Google he has taken on various roles, including product manager, mobile product manager, lead product manager for Google+ Games and mobile, Vice President and product management for Motorola Mobility when they were a division of Google and now currently a Google advisor. Punit is also now currently and will be going forward, the Chief Product Officer for Flipkart, where his goal is to help build them into a “world class product and engineering company.” After 8 years at Google, Punit Soni will be leaving the company to charge ahead as the CPO of Flipkart in India for the next few years.

According to Soni, he sees India as a chance to make a huge impact that spans across the country, using Flipkart as the tool to make that happen. Soni states that India is currently seeing tons of change spreading across the country with plenty of energy from and ambition flowing out of Bangalore, and with Flipkart touting a footprint of millions of people they are leading the charge. He also states that India is at the intersection of the mobile revolution, and that phones like Motorola’s budget minded Moto G has kickstarted the beginning of it, offering consumers up a device with great specs and software that doesn’t cost near as much as some flagships, making the Moto G a great value for consumers.

Part of Soni’s goals is to build up Flipkart into the world’s best product company and take things to a global scale, while also building programs that focus on bringing some of the best talent to Bangalore. Soni was instrumental in major changes with companies like Motorola, having been the driving force behind the strategical software experiences now powering Motorola’s current devices like the Moto X, Moto G, and Moto E. Soni will no doubt bring that same level of expertise and talent to his next adventure with Flipkart and truly build something great that can bring about a lot of meaningful and impacting changes.

The Google Play app, which was previously standing at version 5.2.13, has been updated. The new version, 5.3.5, is relatively minor as there are not any noticeable changes. It seems like everything is on the back end where everyday users would not see a thing.

You can hit the link below to download and install the latest version of the Google Play app. Otherwise, just wait for it to happen in the coming days or weeks.

It goes without saying, but I’ll type it anyway: the Samsung Galaxy Tab S was one of our favorite tablets of 2014. Hands On With The Razer Forge TV At Mobile World Congress 2015

Razer Forge TV AH 02

The Razer Forge TV was announced back in January at CES 2015, and is Razer’s entry into the Android TV space. The tiny little box is small enough to fit in your hand and is square shape about the size of a CD. The Razer Forge is packing 2GB of RAM and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 CPU on the inside, along with the Adreno 420 GPU to handle the graphics. At the core the Razer Forge TV is an Android TV box, so you’ll have access to the Play Store, Play Movies, Play Music, with access to tons of apps an games as well.

One niche about the Razer Forge compared to other Android TV units like the Nexus Player though is that it allows game streaming from your PC to the TV it’s hooked up to using Razer’s game streaming software, allowing you to play tons of AAA titles from your computer. It also supports Google Cast technology so you can fling content from your Android smartphone or tablet to the Razer Forge TV just like you would with a Chromecast. The Forge TV is compatible with gamepads as well so you can play games properly, and you can use gamepads to navigate around the Android TV interface. Check out some of the hands on images below.

If you don’t want your Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge unboxing experienced ruined once it arrives on your doorstep this Spring, do not watch this video. But who are we kidding — you probably can’t help yourself! Neither could Samsung:

We’ve seen the device at every angle, explored every nook and cranny, and gotten to check out its most cool features, but one thing we can’t partake in right now that Samsung was able to is a good, old-fashioned unboxing. Be sure to indulge by hitting the play button above.

The International Mobile Gaming Awards Sees Monument Valley Win The Grand Prix

AH Monument Valley

Lots of exciting stuff revolving around games happened at the Game Developers Conference held in San Francisco yesterday, including the 11th Annual International Mobile Gaming Awards. During this award ceremony, various mobile games were nominated to win an award for best game in certain categories. One of these categories was the Grand Prix, and the popular puzzle title Monument Valley takes home the award. It’s no small feat to be awarded the best game of the year, especially when many of the contestants were also some really great games. There were over 1,000 games submitted to this year’s awards which only makes the competition tougher, yet Monument Valley was able to steal the hearts of panel judges and win best game of the year.

Judges for the IMGA’s consist of journalists, gamers, and industry experts, making for a wide array of people from all sides of the industry to judge the games. All the games are given a fair assessment and then eventually filtered out and slimmed down to a total of 80 nominees, and from there the judges pick the best games for each different category including the Grand Prix. The other categories include honorable mention, people’s choice, excellence in gameplay, guilty pleasure, excellence in story telling, best meaningful play, best technical achievement in a game, best quickplay game, excellence in innovation, excellence in audio visual and art style, best multiplayer game, and best upcoming game. You can find the winners for each of those other categories at the source link.

Monument Valley for those who have never played it, is developed by a company called USTWO games. It’s a puzzle title that tasks people with manipulating large architectural structures to guide the character through each level to progress onto the next. It features a great minimalist design with 3D art inspired buildings and backdrops. What makes it somewhat unique is that the audio will react to and changes based on how you manipulate the structures, and the game features a cloud save function so you can pick up where you left off from different devices at any point in time.Google-Play-Banner-Get-it-On-Large1

Samsung posts official hands-on video of the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge

samsung_galaxy_s6_edge_front_back_slanted_blue

When a new product is launched, we come across a large number of hands-on and first impression videos to give us a better idea of what’s new about a particular device. But it’s always better when something like that is coming directly from the company (or not), as we get detailed information about the products which most hands-on videos might not cover.

Today, Samsung Mobile has posted a small hands-on video on YouTube which shows the hardware and design of both the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge . It’s unlikely that you’ll learn something new about the device that hasn’t been covered before, but it’s always good to hear directly from the company.

Moto E (2015) 3G and 4G LTE Versions Available To Purchase From Motorola And Starting From $119

A couple of weeks ago, Motorola did things a little bit differently then they (and other manufacturers) usually do. It all began when the company started sending out emails advising that they were sending a mystery box to all the media outlets. This immediately sent the rumor mill spinning and everyone seemed mystified at what was going to be released. The week following, mystery boxes did indeed turn up everywhere and inside was the 2015 edition of the company’s budget device, the Moto E LTE. As this is designed as a budget device it seems appropriate that the company decided to forego the typical bells and whistles launch event and instead opted to include a kind of build-your-own cardboard event scene.

Following on from the (literal) unboxing of the Moto E, Motorola did more formally introduce the Moto E at this year’s MWC event in Barcelona. Now, following on from this, it seems the device is finally available to buy from the Motorola website. If you are thinking about picking up one then there are two versions on offer. The first is the headline LTE version and is priced as $149.99 and available in both a black or white edition. If LTE is not needed, then the second version is a standard 3G version which is more affordably priced at $119 and again is available in both a black and white edition. Hit the source link below if you are interested in picking up one from Motorola.

If you missed all the initial announcements and need a quick recap on what’s on offer then the Moto E 2015 comes with a 4.5in IPS display protected by Gorilla Glass 3. Inside, the Moto E comes with 1GB RAM and processors differ depending on version. On the 3G variant, the Moto E is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 quad-core processor (clocking at 1.2 GHz). In contrast, the 4G LTE version comes equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor (clocked at 1.2GHz ). In terms of memory, the Moto E comes with 8GB internal storage as well as a MicroSD card slot for additional storage (up to 32GB). Camera-wise, the Moto E comes equipped with a 5MP rear shooter and a VGA front facing option. Additionally, the Moto E comes with WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and all powered by a 2,390mAh battery. Not forgetting the Moto E comes running on Android 5.0 (Lollipop) out of the box.

HTC Posts 27% Year-Over-Year Revenue Growth

HTC One M9 Event AH 2

HTC unveiled the new One M9 a couple of days ago, but they also announced that they are making money. The Taiwanese company has posted a 27.7% increase year-over-year. They reported revenues of NT$9.226 billion (US$293.9 million) for February 2015, which is a significant increase over what they made in February 2014. The revenues are actually down a bit from what the company reported in January, 2015. Revenues dropped 24.8% from January to February, but the bigger picture is that they are making money YOY.

HTC upgraded their flagship One series phone at MWC, but they are doing really well in the mid-range arena with their Desire line of handsets. The Desire Eye, 612, 816, and the rest of the line are not specced as high as the One M8 or M9, but they are also priced to sell. Consumers in Europe and in Asia are taking to these phones in droves, driving revenue and profit to a company that has been struggling the last few years. HTC isn’t done, either.

The company surprised us at MWC with a virtual reality headset they developed in partnership with Valve. The HTC Vive is a new VR headset with more than 70 sensors on it that give the headset full head tracking support and a full 360-degree field of view. The refresh rate is low, coming in at only 90Hz, which HTC explained can help people who tend to experience motion sickness when wearing a VR headset. The initial hardware they unveiled is a prototype, but reaction to the announcement was overwhelmingly positive. The Vive headset is part of the HTC RE line of products, along with the Grip and the RE Camera they announced last year.

HTC is on the right track. 27% YOY growth proves that they are making the right moves and re-establishing themselves, both with consumers and with other partners. The company understands that just making smartphones isn’t going to get them to where they want to be. They are branching out and offering new and interesting products, as well as partnering with some monster companies like Valve. The future is bright for HTC.

According To J.K. Shin, Pre-orders Are “Pouring In” For The Samsung Galaxy S6

Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge MWC AH 06

Back at the start of the week, MWC unofficially kicked off with both Samsung and HTC holding their respective press events and unveiling their respective 2015 flagship devices. In Samsung’s case, this resulted in the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6. Not forgetting, the South Korean tech giant also unveiled their other Galaxy S6 device, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. These two devices were the highlight of the unveiling and seemed to be taken rather well by the audience.

The two Galaxy S6 devices were unveiled and seemed to place a great deal of emphasis on being ‘premium’. Both devices came with a Gorilla Glass 4 front and also a Gorilla Glass 4 back, resulting in an overall high quality glass covered device. Not to mention, the two were announced in a handful of colors which further seemed to illicit a premium look. Well, a few days on and it now seems that it was not just the audience who were wowed by the look of the latest Galaxy incarnation. Jong-Kyun Shin, Samsung Electronics President of the IT & Mobile Communications Division, has been noted stating that pre-orders for the new device seem to be extremely good so far. According to Shin, “After the unpacking, pre-orders for the Galaxy S6 are pouring in”. Further adding “and our clients’ response to the product is also very good”.

So it seems the device is doing rather well in maintaining its allure past the initial unveiling. Whether these “pouring in” of pre-orders can equate to better sales than what was seen for (what was thought of as a disappointing launch product) the Galaxy S5 is yet to be seen. Samsung is probably hoping to emulate if not surpass the sales of the Galaxy S4, which was actually their best selling device to date. However, with the Galaxy S5 expected to ship and be sold “in more countries than before”, the Galaxy S6 does seem primed to have the opportunity to equal the dizzy heights of the Galaxy S4. What do you think? Will the Samsung Galaxy S6 sell better than previous incarnations? Let us know.

Unbill Is An Invite-Only Way To Stop Nagging Roommates To Pay Bills

Unbill-Thumb Paying bills is a monthly burden that doesn't need any help whatsoever with being a pain in the rear. But living with roommates can amplify the difficulty. You have to track them down (if they're not particularly responsible) or deal with the unpleasant task of asking in the first place (even if they are). Unbill is a new Android app that seeks to erase both of these issues.

Unbill, which is invite-only and currently limited to Eugene, Oregon (hey, at least it's not San Francisco), splits bills and does the math, alerting each user how much they owe and when.
