Report: Google Will Fold Chrome OS Into Android, Make Single Operating System by 2017

According to a report out of the Wall Street Journal, Google is taking Chrome OS and folding it into Android to create one operating system to rule them all. For at least the past two years, according to WSJ sources, engineers have been working to combine the two, but have recently made significant progress. In fact, the progress is far enough along that Google is hoping to unveil this new single operating system in 2017, but may show it off as early as 2016.

For years, many have wondered why Google needed to maintain two separate operating systems in Chrome OS and Android. While Google has used Chrome OS to launch a line of Chromebooks, it always seemed silly when you have Android that probably could have been tweaked ever so slightly to be more desktop friendly. After all, Android has been king of the mobile world for the past few years and is more widely known than the much more niche, Chrome OS. Why not just develop it further into new arenas?

Either way, Google has apparently decided to do just that. With a single operating system, it only makes sense that this creates a single platform for developers to get behind, but also gives them an already well-established platform to continue to push their services through. Android is Android. Everyone knows what an Android phone is these days. If Google can do this right, they could use the strength of that name recognition to move beyond the barriers that Chrome OS ever ran into.

So, was the Pixel C tablet a sign of Google hinting at this move? Probably. If you recall, Google took some time during its Nexus event last month to announce a Pixel product that ran Android even though all previous Pixels had only been attached to Chrome OS and Chromebooks. It was confusing at the time, but if this report is correct, it sort of makes sense now. Of course, that tablet ran Android, though maybe it will soon run this new single operating system.

On a semi-related note, Google will reportedly keep its Chrome browser separate.

What do you guys think, is this the right move?

Backdrops is a Pretty Sweet Wallpaper App on Android

Apologies are needed for our lack of icon and wallpaper posts in recent weeks, but when you have 65 phones to review, getting all custom with our home screens often takes a back seat. With that said, Backdrops is a brand new wallpaper app that is worth a look because of its selection, design, and approach to getting social with phone prettiness.

First of all, the app has hundreds of custom made wallpapers for you to choose from. Some are Material Design inspired, others are super minimal, some are edited photography, and others are just neat. There are categories to help you find one quicker, a beautifully designed app that aids in that process, and the ability to upload some yourself, which means you are giving back to a wallpaper community. The app also has a featured wallpaper of the day, ways to favorite ones that interest you, and curated packs from the apps’ creator (premium).

Feel free to take the free version for a spin and get that home screen in order. If you like, there is a $1.99 in-app purchase that unlocks the full experience.

Sprint Greasily Announces “Unlimited Data for $20/Month” Plan

This morning, Sprint announced a new “unlimited data” plan for $20 per month that “beats all national carriers.” Except, to no one’s surprise, this is actually just a 1GB plan and isn’t anything new or ground-breaking or special.

I hate to come down so hard on Sprint, because T-Mobile does something similar with its current line of plans, where they sell you on 1GB, 3GB, or 5GB of data, but then refer to the plan as having unlimited. Thing is, they may be giving you “unlimited” data, it’s just that only that first 1/3/5GB are at good, LTE speeds. After you hit those caps, they reduce you to 2G speeds at an unlimited rate.

Sprint just comes off here as being a bit sneaky or greasy in that the headline screams “UNLIMITED” without mentioning that its really a 1GB plan.

I hate the race to the bottom.

Watch: BlackBerry Priv Feature Overview Video

Set to begin shipping November 6, with pre-orders already taking place, BlackBerry has uploaded a feature overview video to YouTube, detailing a few of the highlights offered by the Priv.

As detailed in the video, the phone features a dual-curved 5.4″ QHD display, 18MP rear-facing camera with OIS, innovative Android features such as pop-up widgets (sorta like Apple’s 3D Touch), as well as its physical keyboard with Smart Slide.

Still priced at $699, there is no doubt it is set to be a premium device, complete with all of the privacy protection, but that price may be a tough pill for some to swallow. We do have a unit on its way to the office, so you can expect a complete hands-on and review coming soon.

On a somewhat related note, I still wish the name wasn’t Priv. I would have stuck with Venice. It’s much more classy than Priv.

Nexus 6P Goes Through Teardown Treatment, Innards Dissected

With the Nexus 5X already going through the teardown process, it was only a matter of time until its larger brother, the Nexus 6P, received the same treatment. The folks at iFixIt have done the dirty work for all of us, ripping Google and Huawei’s device up, ranking it to see how easy it would be for tinkerers to repair it themselves. Spoiler alert – it’s really, really hard.

Once iFixIt was able to separate the two sides of the unibody design, somewhat quick access was allowed to the battery, but say you have a busted screen. Apparently, the only way to replace it would be to dig through the entire device, making replacement nearly impossible for the Average Joe. This is not recommended.

Not only that, but opening the device period is made difficult by the chances of breaking the glass that covers the rear-facing camera. From what iFixIt writes, once this device was slapped together, it was not made to be torn apart.

Overall, with an abysmal repairability score of just 2 out of 10, it seems that owners who are not comfortable with handling tiny tools and really opening up the hardware should stay away from self repairs. If in need, take it to a professional.

DROID Turbo 2 and MAXX 2 Now Available From Verizon

It’s so rare these days that companies announce new phones and then make them available days later, but Verizon and Motorola have done that with the new DROID Turbo 2 and DROID MAXX 2. Both phones became official on Tuesday, and both phones are now available for purchase.

The Turbo 2 is the flagship here and probably the phone you should consider if you consider yourself a smartphone heavy lifter. It features a shatterproof 5.4-inch QHD AMOLED display, 3GB RAM, Qualcomm’s most powerful processor, 21MP camera, plenty of storage, and can be customized to your liking through Motorola’s Moto Maker.

It starts at $26 per month for 32GB of storage and jumps to $30 per month if you double the storage. Doubling the storage is probably what you should do if you go the Moto Maker route, because that allows you to refresh the design of the phone once within two years. In other words, you can get a new phone with new custom design once within two years of owning it. If you don’t go the Moto Maker route and want your phone now, Verizon has four pre-fab versions in various colors or textures.

If the Turbo 2 isn’t your cup, consider the MAXX 2 as a budget-friendly, but still quite good, phone. It starts at just $16 per month ($384 at full retail), comes with a mega battery, a nice size, feels great in the hand, and should make you quite happy even if it isn’t a true flagship.

We went hands-on with both the Turbo 2 and MAXX 2 earlier in the week, so be sure to check that out if you are at all interested in either phone.

Moto X Force is Official and Basically Just a DROID Turbo 2 for International

Motorola wasted no time in announcing the close brother to the recently announced DROID Turbo 2, that being the Moto X Force. In the shortest press release ever that stopped off in our inbox this morning, Motorola told us to expect the X Force in November in Latin America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. They accompanied that email with a link to a drop test of the phone vs. the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy S6. If you know about the Turbo 2, then you know what happened.

So really, the Moto X Force is just a Turbo 2, only without that stupid Verizon “✔” at the bottom or “DROID” branding. It still has that same shatterproof 5.4-inch QHD AMOLED display, Snapdragon 810, 21MP camera, 3GB RAM, 3760mAh battery, and 32GB/64GB storage options (with SD support). It also will show up on Moto Maker with choices of leather, soft touch plastic, and ballistic nylon.

To see the full specs, check out the DROID Turbo 2 specs. To see the phone in action, check out our DROID Turbo 2 unboxing and tour.

If you live outside of the US and are interested, you can head over to Motorola’s site to sign-up for more info.

OnePlus X Hands-on and First Impressions

It does not have NFC, and it does not have USB Type-C. With that in mind, say “hello” to the new OnePlus X from OnePlus. To be marketed as a budget-friendly smartphone, yet still offering a premium in-hand feel and gentlemanly aesthetic, the OnePlus X will launch on November 19 in the US for a price of just $249. As I just mentioned, the OnePlus X lacks a few things that made the OnePlus One (NFC) and OnePlus 2 (USB Type-C) attractive devices, but does offer the most luxurious look we have seen to date from OnePlus.

In-hand, the device is small, but feels very good. I would say it feels like a mix between a Galaxy S6 and iPhone 5s. With its all metal and glass design, it definitely gives off that Samsung and Apple look. Coupled with a very lightweight design, this phone is perfect for one-handed operation.

For specs, the OnePlus X features a 5″ Full HD (1080p) AMOLED display, Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of onboard storage, dual SIM slot, microSD slot for expandable storage, 2,525mAh battery, and runs OxygenOS on top of Android 5.1.1. For those who enjoy that custom theme and ROM feel that Android offers, it’s a great option.

The device will launch via invite system, naturally, starting November 19. There is only one model, priced at $249 in the United States. While the invite system idea is still total bullshit, you can’t deny that for only $249, this is a solid little device. Although, keep in mind, OnePlus still does not seem to care about NFC.

Below, we go hands-on with the OnePlus X, case accessories for the device, and a special limited edition OnePlus X Ceramic model that is exclusive to overseas markets.

Powerfully Beautiful: Presenting the OnePlus X

New Smartphone Line Fuses Sleek Design with Flagship-level Performance

LONDON – October 29, 2015 – OnePlus today announced their brand new smartphone line with the launch of the OnePlus X. Featuring a compact 5” display and a new range of premium build materials, the OnePlus X, available in Onyx black glass and a limited Ceramic edition, showcases an elevated level of craftsmanship and power for OnePlus.

“Today’s smartphone user strives to find the perfect balance of style and performance. The OnePlus X is a design-centric device chic and powerful enough to fit any lifestyle,” said OnePlus CEO Pete Lau.

Precision Artwork in Your Hand

The OnePlus X is a work of art. OnePlus has created two separate editions inspired by the exquisite handiwork behind two timeless fields of art glassware and ceramic. The OnePlus X Onyx is fashioned from black glass on a metal bezel, giving the phone a premium feel in your hand. Every glass backplate is cut to size and polished repeatedly until it achieves a smooth, glossy, mirror-like finish. Slightly rounded edges give the phone a fluid and seamless feel, and at just 4.86 oz, it is the lightest and slimmest OnePlus device to date.

The Ceramic version is crafted in a process totaling 25 days. Starting with a zirconia mold just 0.5 mm thick, the ceramic is fire-baked up to 2,700oF for more than 28 hours before cooling for two full days. Each individual OnePlus X backplate undergoes three meticulous methods of polishing before it is flawless enough for use. Scratch-resistant with a hardness of 8.5H on the Mohs scale and weighing 5.64 oz, the ceramic build is a feat of engineering and design.

A brushed anodized metal frame etched with 17 elegant microcuts surrounds the OnePlus X. A convenient Alert Slider for easy notification adjustments adorns the left side of the device, with the power button and volume rocker located on the right. Intuitively placed buttons combined with subtle curves and ergonomic lines make the OnePlus X easy and natural to use with one

Capture Your World Faster than Ever

The OnePlus X has a 13MP rear camera combined with f/2.2 aperture, perfect for documenting your unique everyday experiences. Optimized white balance and saturation maintain the integrity of the colors of your photos, and a lightning fast 0.2second autofocus with phase detection autofocus (PDAF) our fastest camera yet means you won’t miss a moment. Shoot in Auto, HDR or Clear Image to perfect your image, or switch to the 8MP front-facing camera with supported Beauty Mode to capture a flawless selfie.

Beauty That’s More than Skindeep

Combining the Snapdragon 801 processor with Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB of RAM, the OnePlus X is as powerful as it is stylish. The 5” 1080p Active Matrix OLED screen is responsive and incredibly bright in direct sunlight, and the 441 PPI resolution keeps the screen sharp without draining your battery.

Notably, the OnePlus X supports two nano SIMs for more network choices and added convenience for people on the go. Even better, one card slot provides optional expandable storage with your own microSD card, allowing a maximum capacity up to 128GB.

Personalize Your Experience

OxygenOS, a custom operating system developed by OnePlus, brings a range of unique features and elements to the OnePlus X. The AMOLED screen, never before seen in a OnePlus device, allows for an ambient display that will wake in duo-chrome mode to alert you to new notifications. A proximity sensor, enabled by each individual user, also wakes the screen whenever the OnePlus X is brought out of a

Along with OxygenOS features such as onscreen gestures, an enhanced file manager and custom quick settings, the OnePlus X also brings FM radio to your smartphone. Broadcast your favorite local stations directly from your phone without having to connect to WiFi or consume data with the new OnePlus Radio.

Pricing and Availability

The OnePlus X Onyx will be available on oneplus.net with an invite in Europe starting November 5 at EUR269.00, with a U.S. version to follow on November 19 for USD249.00. The Ceramic edition will be available with a Ceramic-specific invite in Europe and India starting November 24 for EUR369.00. Only 10,000 OnePlus X Ceramic devices will be available.
