Galaxy Alpha full specs leak, device spotted at Samsung Russia event

galaxy-alpha-specifications brazil

More signs that the release of the metal-clad Galaxy Alpha is imminent: the phone’s specifications leaked again and the device lent its name to a yachting event in Russia.

The first leak originates from Brazil, where an anonymous reader sent the image above to tech site Tecmundo . There’s no way to tell for sure if the image is real, but this close to the Alpha’s rumored mid-August release, there’s a good chance it’s authentic.

The specs listed on the billboard bring no surprises – the leak confirms the Galaxy Alpha’s screen size and resolution, Exynos processor, and 1,860 mAh battery, as well as the inclusion of a fingerprint sensor and heart rate monitor. It’s the second time we hear the Alpha would feature a ~1850 mAh battery; the relatively small capacity is likely a downside of the phone’s very thin profile of just six millimeters. We’ll see if Samsung managed to optimize the Alpha well enough to ensure decent battery life.

According to Tecmundo’s source, the Alpha should launch in Brazil in the second part of August or early September, and should hit the shelves by October.

Moving on to the second sighting of the Alpha, the device made a surprise appearance at a Russian social event this weekend. Samsung Russia jumped the gun with the PR activities for the Galaxy Alpha, as the device’s name was displayed prominently at a yachting regatta and at least some of the participants got to play with the device.

That’s according to prominent local tech site Hi-tech.Mail , which reported that the Alpha would be officially unveiled in Russia this week. The website appears to have taken down the post, not before SamMobile picked up the story.

Given these latest sightings, as well as previous reports, it’s very likely that Samsung will lift the veils on the Galaxy Alpha this week, possibly on Wednesday, August 13. Stay tuned for more details.

XBMC has been spotted working on Android TV

XBMC Android TV

Android TV won’t be commercially available on a wide scale for at least another few months but it appears as though the development community is already having some fun with it. Keyan Mobli on Google+ has compiled XBMC to work on Android TV. As it turns out, it actually works pretty well.

According to Mobli, it wasn’t all that difficult to get working. A few changes were required in the manifest before compiling and the app fired right up on his ADT-1. He goes on to describe XBMC as working “pretty much flawlessly” and demonstrated by showing off a picture of it playing an episode of Sherlock in 1080p. He also provided an APK download for anyone else who may have an ADT-1 with instructions to install the APK over ADB just like any other Android device.

XBMC Android TV

This is very encouraging news for fans of XBMC who may be wondering if they should get Android TV. XBMC support on Google TV wasn’t very good and it took a long time before it was stable on Android as a whole. To see it fired up on an Android TV and work –to use Mobli’s words again– “pretty much flawlessly” means that it likely won’t take long for the community to have releases available for consumer use right alongside or shortly after Android TV’s official release. Of course, that’s only conjecture but we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed either way.

If you have an ADT-1 and want to try this out, you can find the download link on Keyan Mobli’s Google+ post.

Android headliner: T-Mobile Didn’t Need A Merger, And They’re Probably Better Off Without It

AH T-Mobile TMO Logo 2.9

Whatever your thoughts and opinions are on the T-Mobile/Sprint merger that is now known to no longer be, there were a large amount of people who were both for and against it. As a current T-mobile customer, I was trying to keep an open mind about the whole situation and hold off any judgement that sounded like the typical “this is a terrible idea” response as it could have ended up for the better for both sets of customers. After months of dancing around with the regulators and never even having presented their plan to the FCC though, it had been recently announced that the T-Mobile/Sprint merger is no more. I can hear the legions of T-mobile customers rejoicing, and I just might be inclined to take their side, although a Sprint merger wouldn’t have been the end of the world, especially if John Legere took over at the helm.

That is all irrelevant now though since the merger will never take place, although we may still have to wait and see what happens with Iliad, the French telecom company who had been showing interest in purchasing the controlling stake in T-mobile for the past week or two, even having gone so far as to place an official bid for T-mobile. Big Magenta is probably far better off staying away from any proposed mergers, and even more so from a company who’s own total net worth is less than what they had placed for a bid. T-Mobile has been making major changes in the industry, not just its own company, and it has been paying off for them. They are continuing to steadily climb the ladder and closing the gap between the three other major carriers, and there have even been predictions that T-mobile could surpass Sprint as the third largest U.S. carrier sometime by the end of this year. Just in 2014 alone, T-Mobile has added 3.9 million new customers so far, with 2.4 million in the first quarter and 1.5 million total new ads in the second quarter, marking the 4th and 5th consecutive quarters with over 1 million total new ads each, and the most new ads out of all four major U.S. carriers.

T-Mobile doesn’t need a merger to stay afloat, nor do they need one to strengthen their network. They’re doing just fine on their own, and forcing the larger carriers to change things up all the while which for the most part just fosters more competition. T-Mobile continues to add compelling new features and plans to their offerings for customers, while also carrying the industry’s hottest phones and offering customers the fastest network in most cases. T-mobile still has some work to do to expand their coverage outward towards more rural areas, but T-Mobile will first and foremost always focus on where the people are, and this likely won’t change. This focus on where the people are though has caused them to drastically increase the speeds of their network and gain customers the blazing fast data speeds that they crave. Had T-Mobile ended up merging, plenty of people had concerns about whether or not they would have the same kind of experience they’ve been having with T-Mobile so far, and that’s a legitimate fear given the experience that Sprint customers have had while Sprint has been upgrading it’s network and giving it a complete overhaul. Although there are still areas of improvement for the fourth largest carrier in the U.S., T-mobile is still the fastest growing network in the country and they offer the nation’s fastest 4G LTE network speeds in most metro areas. T-Mobile doesn’t need a merger, what they need is just to keep focusing their efforts the way they have been and continue to grow their customer base and their profits.

Android Game News Weekly 08/10/14: Gear Jack Black Hole, Dragon Quest IV, Surgeon Simulator, Crazy Taxi City Rush

AH Game News Weekly

Crescent Moon Games Releases Gear Jack Black HoleGear Jack Black Hole

The original Gear Jack was a great little game in an arcade endless runner style, and Gear Jack Black Hole only builds on the awesomeness. This time around Gear Jack is sucked into a black hole and you have to help guide him to the end of each stage to lead him towards his ultimate goal of saving his life. There will be many an obstacle, but nothing you can’t handle right? The endless running gameplay, the stylized graphics, the loveable little robot, they’re all back in the sequel and ready for some fun. There are talents and customizations to complete, and there are 5 different worlds which you’ll play through including Japan, Iceland, Jungle, Volcanic, and Desert. Crescent Moon Games has also decided to make the follow up to Gear Jack free, so you can pick it up at any time.

Dragon Quest IV Lands On Google PlayDragon Quest IV

Square Enix has dropped the second Dragon Quest game onto Android earlier this week with Dragon Quest IV. The gameplay is in the same vertical setup as Dragon Quest VIII, although it doesn’t boast the same type of graphics and it also looks to have less gameplay. Don’t be fooled though, the game will arguably still be great and a wonderful addition to the library for any true Dragon Quest fan. It also still boasts about 40 hours of play time which is a lot more than most games on mobile. Dragon Quest IV is also a little less than Dragon Quest VIII, so if you want a throwback first rate RPG experience, but don’t want to fork out $19.99, this might suit your taste better, although it is still a bit spendy at $14.99. If you fancy a wonderful RPG, Dragon Quest IV should get your attention.

Surgeon Simulator Will Be “Cutting” Into Your Time SoonSurgeon-Simulator-Android-Game

Fans have been asking for the Android release of Surgeon Simulator for quite some time and the team at Bossa studios has finally answered the call. On August 14th, which is this coming Thursday, Surgeon Simulator will be gracing Android tablets with the awesome dark humor and ridiculous physics while you attempt to perform surgery on patients. The game appears to be very graphic and visually gory, something that definitely appeals to gamers on a pretty wide scale. Right now all we have is the release date of the game which is towards the end of this week, but Bossa hasn’t mentioned a cost for the Android gamers. We can however assume that it will cost around the amount of the iOS counterpart which is $6. Check out the trailer to get a grasp of what the gameplay actually looks like.

Crazy Taxi City Rush Breathes New Life Into A Familiar Game FranchiseCrazyTaxi_CityRush_Logo3

SEGA had ported the original Crazy Taxi onto Android in recent past, and it was well received and brought back plenty of fond memories playing it on the console when it first launched years and years ago. Earlier this year SEGA announced they were developing a brand new Crazy Taxi game for mobile called Crazy Taxi City Rush, and that it would be due out later in the year. Earlier this week SEGA launched the game and just like we had learned during the announcement it has more of a linear/on-the-rails type of feel to gameplay as you can’t veer off looking for fares in an open world environment. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t fun, just different. It’s also free where as the original Crazy Taxi was $4.99 when it released, which sadly means that there are IAP involved. Hopefully, the descriptions are a little bit exaggerated and the IAP’s aren’t bold and in your face. If you want partake in the crazy and chaotic gameplay of the new Crazy Taxi game, you can pick it up for free in the Play Store now.

Carriers recommend Samsung devices more than Apple and its iPhone

Samsung_Galaxy_S_4_Back_Camera_Samsung_Logo_Version_2_TA

The role of an employee in a carrier’s retail store is quite easy. They are there to sell a device. So they have some options as to what devices are the best for a particular consumer. New research conducted by Kantar Worldpanel shows that United States carriers are more inclined to recommend a Samsung device rather than an iPhone from Apple.

During the first quarter of 2014, 63% of customers that purchased a smartphone through a carrier were recommended a Samsung device. This tops iPhone recommendations by two times the amount. And, unfortunately for Microsoft, Nokia devices were trumped by Samsung’s ten times its amount. And 59% of those customers went ahead and purchased a Samsung device following the same recommendation.

The size of Samsung’s portfolio does not hurt at all. There are just so many devices manufactured by Samsung that a carrier can recommend one for different reasons and at different price points. Also, the size of Samsung’s portfolio likely keeps subsidy costs lower than Apple’s iPhone. That is what may be holding back carriers from pushing Apple. The subsidy cost for the iPhone is high enough and carriers would likely incur higher costs with even more of its success from recommending it frequently.

Do you have any stories about going to a carrier retail store? Let us know in the comments what you were recommended.

FCC Mandates That All Wireless Carriers Let You Text 911

AH-911 Text

The Federal Communications Commission has set out on a mission to make sure we as citizens can have an alternative of contacting the police. For years now we have been raised to know that when there is a crisis, we are to hurry and call 911. Nowadays since we have modern technology, smartphones are our tool of choice when out and about. The number one act that we do on our phone is text. According to the FCC, “Reports indicate that more than 7 out of 10 cell phone users send or receive text messages. Text messaging is also widely used by Americans who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have speech disabilities.” With 7 out of 10 cell phone users texting, its no doubt that the FCC wants to use the text based communication as another form on contacting the police.

Texting 911 isn’t a brand new idea, the form of communication is already in use in a few cities but is not mandatory. “Although text-to-911 availability is currently limited, it is rapidly expanding. More than one hundred 911 call centers serving portions of 16 states, as well as Vermont and Maine statewide are now accepting emergency texts, and there are already reports of lives saved.” said the FCC. Since the FCC doesn’t want to leave anyone out, they have adopted rules that will require all American wireless carriers to allow their users to text 911. Wireless carriers are given a six month window to deploy the technology if a request is sent by a 911 call center.

With the statistics in showing that more people are texting and the growth of text-to-911 is rapid, it’s obvious that carriers cannot say no to the technology. It’s already proven that the technology is saving lives and can be really convenient if you are caught up in a bank robbery, kidnapped or any other disastrous crisis that this world has to offer. Text-to-911 provides a life saving alternative for everyone, especially the hard of hearing or people with speech disabilities that cannot call the police. Since Text-to-911 is on its way, let us know what you think about the new alternative to contacting the police.

[Weekend Poll] US Readers: Who Is Your Wireless Carrier?

CellTower

I know, US only polls do exclude a lot of most loyal followers, but today's poll is about taking a head count in a turbulent time for the US wireless industry. Dan Hesse was just ousted as CEO of Sprint, and the carrier's parent company SoftBank has allegedly ended its plans for a takeover-merger of competitor T-Mobile. T-Mobile is also poised to surpass Sprint as America's #3 wireless carrier by postpaid subscribers, with CEO John Legere predicting it will happen before the year is out.

HTC A11 specs and pictures leaked

HTC_A11_leaked_Image_01

News has just surfaced about the HTC A11. Apparently the device is headed for Sprint and has the same general shape that HTC favors for its phones. The device is running on a Snapdragon 410 processor, which is 64 bit, and sports a 4.7″ 480p screen. The camera will be a single 5MP shooter and the speakers will lack the Boomsound feature that HTC is so famous for. On the software side, the A11 will come with Kitkat 4.4.2 and Sense 6.0. Lastly, the same build quality may not be seen with this device, due to HTC’s outsourcing manufacturing to CompalComm.

USPTO nixes Apple patent, could benefit Samsung with trial damages

uspto_seal

The USPTO has issued a ruling on an Apple patent related to predictive text input declaring the patent invalid. The decision on US Patent No 8,074,172 centered on claim 18 of the patent which was defeated on the basis of prior art. The patent in question was one of two that a jury recently determined had been infringed upon by Samsung in a lawsuit brought by Apple.

In that trial, Apple was initially awarded approximately $119 Million in damages. At the time, despite the jury’s ruling, many saw Samsung as a winner in the lawsuit as damages were a small fraction of the $2 Billion Apple had asked for, an apparent nod to Samsung’s argument that smartphones contain too many patents to justify any single one commanding a large damages amount.

This new decision by the USPTO, which Samsung has notified the court about via a new filing, seems likely to result in damages being decreased even more. Apple had originally claimed infringement on five patents. With this latest change, a patent on a mechanism that converts addresses and phone numbers to links is the sole remaining patent that Apple has apparently prevailed on.

This news comes only a few days after the two tech giants agreed to stop all current litigation outside the U.S.
