Meizu Will Hold A Press Conference On January 28, New Hardware Is Coming

Meizu Jan 28 conference teaser_4

Xiaomi has been all over the place lately, while Meizu on the other hand, was relatively quiet. Not only did we not see any official news for a while now, but even the rumors and leaks have been relatively quiet lately. We did, however, know that Meizu will hold an event at the end of January, and now the company has confirmed that fact. This China-based company has already sent out invitation for the event that will take place in Beijing Convention Center on January 28.

If you take a look at the gallery down below, you’ll see a couple of images of the aforementioned invitation. There’s nothing special about it, but it’s nice and it does the trick. Meizu is expected to unveil the smaller version of their M1 Note handset, M1 Mini if you will, though we still don’t know if the company will use that name or not. This handset will quiet probably sport the same specifications as the M1 Note, but will have a smaller, 5-inch display. So, we’re looking at the 5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) display, 2GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of non-expandable internal storage. This handset will be powered by MediaTek’s MT6752 octa-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz which ships with Mali T760 GPU for graphics processing. 13 and 5-megapixel cameras will also be a part of the package, on the back and front of this device, respectively. Dual-LED, dual tone flash will be located on the back as well and the device will offer 4G LTE connectivity. Keep in mind that these are not confirmed specs of this handset, but we’ve seen it leaked many times and everything points to a smaller version of the M1 Note.

That being said, Meizu might announce some additional hardware at their January 28 event. Some images leaked (which you also can check out in the gallery below), and it seems like they mysteriously teaser more “smart home” products. We still have no idea what exactly Meizu plans to announce there though, will we see a new category of devices from Meizu perhaps? Let us know what you think, as usual.

Android Headliner: Price Was Redmi Note’s Main Selling Point, But What About The Premium Note?

AH Xiaomi Note - 5.6

Xiaomi is the fastest growing smartphone manufacturer in the world. This company was founded back in 2010, and they’re currently the third biggest smartphone vendor in the world and have shipped 61 million smartphones in 2014. If you consider that the company moved “only” 19 million devices in 2013, you get a really nice image of the company’s growth rate, they shipped three times more devices in 2014 than they did a year before. That being said, Xiaomi is well known for their low prices and well-built devices, but they’re also known as the Chinese Apple. Xiaomi is trying to differentiate and avoid that comparison, but was unable to do that thus far, we’ll see how will they fare in the future.

This Chinese smartphone OEM has released a couple of smartphones in 2014, the Redmi 1S, Redmi Note (3G & 4G variants) and the Mi4. The Xiaomi Mi4 was the company’s flagship handset until the recently launched Mi Note and Mi Note Pro devices appeared, while the Redmi 1S and Redmi Note were sort of a budget mid-range devices. Xiaomi has released the Redmi 1S’ successor on January 4th, a new and improved version for even less cash, and a lot of people thought the company will do the same for the Redmi Note on their January 15 event, but the company managed to surprise us. As I already mentioned, the Xiaomi Mi Note and Mi Note Pro were launched during that event. The company has removed the “Redmi” branding and branded these handsets Mi Note and Mi Note Pro. This doesn’t have to mean we won’t be seeing the Redmi Note 2 launch in the coming months though, perhaps it’ll launch in March, considering its predecessor was launched in March 2014.

Let’s put this into perspective, the Redmi Note 2 was a really popular device and next to the Redmi 1S the best selling device of the company last year. The main reason for that, aside from the fact this thing has solid spec sheet, was its pricing. This thing was priced at $130 (the 3G variant) in China when it launched, which was a bargain for a device which came with a 4.7-inch 720p display, 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera. The Xiaomi Mi Note and Mi Note Pro are significantly more expensive devices, Mi Note’s pricing starts at 2,299 Yuan ($371), while Mi Note Pro will be available starting from 3,299 Yuan ($532).

As you can see, the Redmi Note was in a completely different category of devices compared to the new “Mi Note” devices. It will definitely be interesting to see how well these devices will sell once Xiaomi launches them, the company basically transformed their mid-range line into a high-end line. I don’t think the Redmi Note and Mi Note line target the same type of consumers though, so a follow-up to a Redmi Note would be a smart move by Xiaomi. I have no doubt in my mind that the Mi Note handsets will be a success, this pricing is way higher compared to the Redmi Note, but looking from a global perspective and compared to devices in the same category (flagships), these handsets are actually quite affordable. Not to mention that they pack the latest and the greatest specs, especially the Mi Note Pro which features a 5.7-inch 2K display, 4GB of DDR4 RAM and is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 64-bit octa-core chip. Price is definitely not their main selling point, but it is definitely a benefiting factor. Either way you spin this, Xiaomi has added two great phablets to their lineup and we’ll see how well will they sell in China, and hopefully other markets if Xiaomi manages to expand somewhere else in 2015, as they’re planning to do, and offer these handsets for sale outside of their home country.

[Weekend Poll] Smartwatches: Round Or Square/Rectangular Display?

nexus2cee_wm_DSC05550

This weekend's poll asks a simple question, but it's an interesting one nonetheless, I think: do you prefer your smartwatch round or square?

The Moto 360 and G Watch R remain the only announced Wear devices with round displays. And, despite their coolness, circles have their downsides - they're unabashedly less efficient when displaying text, especially in a computing world that has been designed around quadrilaterals since the earliest monitors; there are so many interfaces that simply aren't optimized for a circle.

Marriott backtracks under pressure from FCC, Microsoft, Google

mariott

Marriott’s efforts to block its customers’ personal WiFi hotspots have ended, according to a statement from the company.

Last month, Microsoft and Google expressed concern over the issue, and Marriott is finally backtracking.

In an email to Inc., a Marriott spokesperson said, “Marriott International listens to its customers, and we will not block guests from using their personal Wi-Fi devices at any of our managed hotels,

The FCC had also filed a complaint against Marriott, so that was likely part of the decision to stop using cell jammers as well.

Android Headliner: ASUS Needs To Expand On The Availability Of The ZenFone 2

AH ASUS ZenFone 2-1

ASUS is a pretty well known company in the U.S. for their computers, and in fact, they’re huge in the gaming industry and community as they crank out some of the most powerful gaming PC components and their gaming laptops are some of the best on the market. They also make a really great smartphone, which is especially apparent with the ZenFone series of devices, alas, ASUS doesn’t offer their smartphones in the U.S. market short of the FonePad that hit AT&T last year. Furthermore they don’t have much expansion in Europe either, but at least their phones have a presence there. With ASUS latest offering, the ZenFone 2, it has become ever more clear why ASUS needs to bring this line of smartphones to the U.S.

Let’s start with the price. ASUS is going to be offering their ZenFone 2 starting at just $199. In case you misread that, we said $199. Irregardless of the fact that this is for ASUS entry model which comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, that’s an amazing price. Especially when you consider the other specs like the 64-bit quad-core processor on the inside, the 5.5-inch Full HD IPS screen, and a 13MP rear facing camera(of which was compared to the HTC One M8 and the Galaxy Note 4 and came out ahead with better low-light images). ASUS is also going to be launching a model of the ZenFone 2 that comes with either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage while also bumping the RAM to 4GB. Whether or not you have need for all 4GB of RAM is debatable, and this model will surely cost a little more than the touted $199 starter cost, but even at that it will still end up being a steal compared to other devices.

ASUS ZenFone 2 also looks stylish, so it’s not just packed with some decent specs at a really low cost price. It looks good, and it comes in multiple colors so people can pick a device more tailored to their personality. Function should always take a little bit more of the attention than the form, but if there’s one thing that’s become apparent over the last year with new technology it’s that we want our tech to look as just as good as our other possessions, and style isn’t typically something you’ll find in a smartphone that doesn’t cost a lot of money. ASUS is turning this notion on its ear with the ZenFone 2, offering up a smartphone that actually looks pretty sleek and still manages to do it while keeping some of the more practical functionality in place. Like the rear placement of the volume rocker, which we saw from a few of LG’s flagship devices over the last couple of years. ASUS is a huge name in technology, and they certainly have the means to become a bigger name in mobile.

If they had their phones available on U.S. carriers they could make a bigger splash in the U.S. market and grow their mobile division, and they have a decent leg up on some companies because they’re already an established tech brand here, unlike other device OEM’s like Huawei and ZTE who offer decent products but aren’t really recognized by U.S. consumers. The bottom line is that they definitely need to bring the ZenFone 2 to the U.S. which not only gives consumers more choice and from a trusted brand they already know, but also at a fraction of the cost of other devices for some specs that are still very good. Compare what the ASUS ZenFone 2 is offering to other devices that come in at $199 and you’d be pleasantly surprised as to how good the ZenFone 2 really looks at that point.

YouTube app jumps to version 10, but only small changes noted [APK download]

YouTube_Logo

Google has started the process of rolling out an update to YouTube taking it from version 6.0.3 up to version 10.02.3. The jump in version number seems odd as most indications thus far are that the changes are mostly cosmetic in nature with no major changes or features included. The biggest change seems to be in the “intents” screen that pops up when a user decides they want to share a video. Instead of a list of applications to choose from, a grid display is brought up instead.

Besides switching to a grid display for sharing, the new window also includes an option to “Copy URL” that is displayed in the top bar of the pop-up window. Outside of the change in the sharing options, voice search is once again present in the app. Upon hitting the search icon, users will notice a small microphone in the search bar. Just tapping that brings up the voice input box.

Others who are really paying attention to the YouTube app may notice the “replay” spinner is now pointing in the opposite direction. Sources indicate the code for the APK also includes some references to YouTube’s forthcoming video editing features. None of that code is active or visible to end users at present though. Users are also reporting performance seems to be a little bit better, particularly on older hardware, so the code may have been optimized a bit.

You can grab the APK to install manually on your device by visiting the source link below. If you are willing to be patient though, you can wait for the update to hit your account and then handle it through your normal update process.

Featured Review: Crabby Digital Premium USB Cable

crabby

USB cables are one of those things we constantly overlook when thinking about what we want or should buy. It is all very well having the best smartphone on the market or a turbo charge charger, but without a suitable cable to connect the two, what do you have? Cables are those forgotten heroes that keep our devices powered and as such should be thought of as just as important. Invest in a good cable and you won’t just have a good cable but you will have a good cable for life. Today, we will be taking a quick look at the Crabby Digital Micro USB Cable.

Probably the most important aspect when buying a decent cable, is the build quality. A cable built well is likely to stand the test of time and all the rough terrain it will encounter in its charging lifespan. The Crabby Digital cable seems to be one of those cables. It is tough, coated in rubber and contains quite a thick USB cable compared to the more generic options. As such this is not exactly a lightweight cable. That said, with weight, comes the expectation of durability. Only time will tell on this occasion but on first impressions, the cable does seem built to last. To add to this, the connections also are well protected. These are usually where most cables fail once the connector becomes broken. The Crabby Digital Premium Cable does offer reinforced connections which should add a decent level of protection over the long haul. Lastly, the cable on offer is a flat cable and as such you are not going to encounter any tangling problems. The lead does neatly stay in an easily usable and tangle-free state. Not to mention, the cable also comes with a handy velcro wrap which can be used to make sure the cable stays closed and aid portability when traveling with it.

There were no major issues in terms of the usability of the Crabby Digital Cable. This one did plug into devices nice and tight and felt as though a firm connection was being made. There was also no issues when charging or using the cable for data transfer (35MB/second) with the cable providing a decent connection. In fact, when transferring data, the cable does do so quite quickly compared to generic branded options. If you are looking for a nice and well-priced cable to give your premium smartphone that additional premium feel, then you should probably consider this option. The Crabby Digital Premium Cable is a 6ft cable and comes with a USB Type 2.0 Male connector to Micro USB Type B connector. Not to mention the cable is being offered with a ‘lifetime guarantee’. If you want to give the cable a try then you can pick it up now from Amazon where it is currently on sale for $9.99
