Android Headliner: Smartphones, Wearables, And The Connection Of Health In The Middle
Health has gotten a big push from electronics manufacturers this past year. We’ve seen the beginning rise of wearables from new smartwatches, to fitness trackers, and even active smart clothing that can all talk to your smartphone and transmit health data to your connected device, viewable through a companion app which also has the ability to sometimes manage a few functions of the wearable. Smartphones are becoming “healthier” too though, it’s not just wearables and smart clothing that are taking a health focused approach. Smartphones like Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 have embedded sensors to read you heart rate, as well as track your steps through the pedometer. It also has the ability to read you Blood Oxygen saturation and tell you the strength of the ultra violet light from the sun,(just in case you’re either a vampire or just extremely sensitive to sunlight)and all of that information is fed to you through the Samsung S Health app.
Devices like the Sony Xperia Z3 may not have the heart rate sensor or be able to tell you how strong the son’s ultraviolet rays are, but it does have a built in pedometer so it can track your steps, and it when paired with one of the Sony Smart devices like the Smart Band or the SmartWatch 3, the heart rate sensor comes back into play, as well as a visual display of your sleep patterns, calories burned, etc. Sony feeds you this data through the Lifelog app, which is basically their version of Samsung’s S Health. Google’s taking a keen approach to health too, with the newly released Google Fit application, which when paired with a compatible device can also read your heart rate, and feed the information back to you, whether on your Motorola Moto 360, or on the screen of your chosen Android device. Not only that, but it also aims to give a collective place to gather and compile all the health data that’s tracked from other apps and devices. Making it easier for you to stay on top of your health.
Health is definitely an important thing, and it’s kind of amazing to see how far we’ve come in being able to interact with our personal health(as well as the personal health of others)through our smartphones and other everyday devices. More manufacturers will surely start to integrate health related software and features into future devices too, and what the OEMs don’t bake in, other companies will take care of through fitness bands, and sensor embedded clothing. Think about just a few of years ago how we interacted with health on a digital level. Before many of the fitness trackers and wearables were available some of the Nike+ devices and the Nike Fuel band(as well as others)were among the only things out there, and they weren’t compatible with very many devices. These were also companies already focused on active lifestyles with loads of different active wear, because they were active sports brands.
Today, we’re breaching a time where you can track your heart rate with the sensor on your phone, which can be synced with the smartwatch or fitness band on your wrist. That smartwatch or fitness band also has the capability to monitor your sleep patterns and help you get a better night’s rest, and on top of that wake you up feeling more refreshed, and in turn, more healthy. These are features and devices coming from electronics companies, who we might never have thought would bring us something focused on health. Yet, here we are at the end of 2014 and nearly every major smartphone OEM has something to offer that can help you track pieces of your health in one way or another. As we drive forward into 2015 health will likely become a stronger connection between wearable technology and the smartphones we keep in our pockets. It’s certainly a wonderful age of technology to be living in at the moment.

Chainfire Roots Android Lollipop For A Ton Of Nexus Devices
The famous Chainfire is at it again, he has announced that he has successfully achieved root on 6 newer Nexus devices, including the newly released Nexus 9. The devices Chainfire has successfully rooted are the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, Nexus 7 2012 and 2013, Nexus 10, and, as previously mentioned, the Nexus 9. That last one is the most impressive, not only was Chainfire able to root the Nexus 9, but he was able to root that device about a week ago, pretty much just as it was released. The speed and reliability of Chainfire’s roots is simply stunning to say the least, this is what has made him a beloved part of the Android community.
Chainfire took to his Google+ page today to state that his CF Auto Root files have all been updated to work with all of the Nexus devices mentioned above, pretty much every Nexus devices that has or will, at some point, received Android Lollipop, except the Nexus 6. Something important to keep in mind if you plan on using this new root method on your Nexus device is that all of these files will require that you use Fastboot and not flashable recovery zips. A second note, for some of these Nexus devices you will more than likely be required to also use an OEM bootloader unlock tool in order to successfully unlock your device’s bootloader.
Once you have successfully used Fastboot then your device should load a special boot image that will install SuperUser. We thought it was worth mentioning that there are some significant changes in this release, they are as follows. The new variants of CFAR have the SuperSU ZIP embedded, there is a second included ZIP that patches the current kernel to run SuperSU at boot, and last but not least, current CFARs include SuperSU v2.20 which is not available anywhere else at the moment. All of these changes are for the better and overall are pretty impressive.

Google Glass Might be Two Years Old But Its Still Ahead Of Its Time
It seems incredible to me that Google Glass is two years old. That we’ve had the technology for two whole years and whilst there’s been press about the project, it’s become another of Google’s wacky projects that is something of an also-ran. Except, no it isn’t as I’ll come on to write about. But first, let me reintroduce Glass just in case my readers are unfamiliar with the project. You see, Glass is the first of Google’s Project X devices to launch into the market. It’s a wearable piece of Android technology that is controlled by our voice and tapping the unit. It projects information through a screen set above our eyeline and connects to the wider world via built-in WiFi and Bluetooth. The unit contains a dual core processor and 16 GB of storage, plus a camera. It’s designed to be an augmented reality device and has many real world applications, which I’ll detail.
Reuters recently ran an article proclaiming that Google Glass is a commercial failure and worse, it won’t be a success. This is missing the point: Glass isn’t designed to be a commercial success. Google were never expecting to sell two million Glass units to Explorers as it’s designed as a prototype into wearable technology to demonstrate what it can do and to get developers thinking about possible projects. We’ve seen other projects that have taken their inspiration from Glass, such as the smart helmet. Glass is the potential forerunner to a great many additional wearable devices that can be used for all sorts of leisure and professional activities. And a great example of this is how Glass can be used for education purposes in the medical field – something I’m involved with. A doctor wearing Glass can show students live action from the eyes’ perspective and provide two way commentary.
Why the negativity associated with Glass? It appears to be behavioural. Essentially, people are scared of the radical change that is involved wearing a smartphone on our face rather than in our hands. To my readers; do you feel weird talking to your ‘phone in public? Okay, harassing Siri was fun for the first few minutes, but if you’re on a bus or train, you’re almost certainly not going to start saying, “okay Google, text my wife I love her and to light the candles, I’m coming home” because it’s way too awkward. We are not at the Star Trek ideal yet; we don’t want to walk up to a computer (or tap something on our shirt) and give voice commands. Not yet, anyway; but the adoption of smartwatches will start to change this.
Another fly in the ointment is how many businesses are banning Google Glass as a product. One example from the summer has UK cinemas banning Glass for privacy concerns. Never mind that almost all ‘phones these days have cameras, shoot some smartwatches do. And if I really want to bring a camera into a cinema I’ll find a way. We also have the farce of people driving wearing glass being busted by the law enforcement agencies, who turn a blind eye to executives wandering all over the road trying to figure out how to change station on their fancy touchscreen built into the dashboard of their BMW 7-Series. Ultimately, the perception of people has to change and I am sure it will.
There’s also plenty of developer support. There are nearly a hundred applications on the official web site, which is a lot for a brand new, state-of-the-art project that is generally only available for the wealthy geeks amongst us. No discredit to Glass Explorers! Yes, we’ve seen plenty of high profile staff leavers from Glass, but Google remains committed to the project with hundreds of engineers working on it. They’ve appointed a former Calvin Klein executive to head up the project, Ivy Ross, a sign that Google recognise Glass needs to look socially acceptable.
I believe the problem is that Glass is years ahead of its time. Just as back in 1999, the BlackBerry smartdevices were laughed at by most people, then ten years later everybody has a smartphone, so I am sure it will be with Glass. It will likely take less time. And the resulting devices likely will be cousins of Glass, but wearable technology is coming. It may arrive first in the medical, corporate and engineering market, where it can be used to guide users using augmented reality technology, but it’s coming soon. Future versions of Glass will be smaller, sharper, faster and better equipped. Keep the faith.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Causing Video Playback Issues On 2013 WiFi Only Nexus 7 For Some Users
We’d be kidding ourselves if we continued to believe that software updates on devices went completely without a hitch. Android has certainly matured over the years and has developed into a wonderful mobile operating system. That doesn’t mean there won’t be the occasional bug here and there, and those bugs will need to be fixed of course, but as software updates come and go there’s bound to be a few hiccups. Such is the case with the latest Android firmware update, Android 5.0 Lollipop which just started rolling out to devices this past week, including all Nexus devices from the Nexus 4 forward.(except the LTE models of tablets for now, and the Nexus Q, sorry Q)
What we’re going over today focuses on the Lollipop update that has gone out to the 2013 WiFi only model of the Google Nexus 7. It appears that some people are having issues with video playback on their devices after updating their software to Android 5.0 Lollipop. This is certainly unfortunate, but thankfully it isn’t happening in droves to a wide grouping of users, that’s the good news. More good news is that you can fix the issue if this problem is plaguing your Nexus 7 2013, however the good news is short lived as the issue seems to reappear after watching only a few videos.
Perhaps though a few videos is better than none, and in the meantime you may end up having to just utilize video playback by another alternate means. We know, that’s not what you wanted to hear but for the moment there isn’t really anything that can be done besides the temporary fixes. To be specific, the issue that’s happening is that somewhere in the Lollipop update the video player gets lost, and the system can’t find it whenever you try to access videos in pretty much any application. While an update from Google might be the only thing that can help the issue, you can try rebooting the device, or you can try disabling the “use NuPlayer” option which can be found inside of the developer options menu in settings. The last resort would be wiping the cache from your your device which you need to do from the recovery menu. Hopefully none of our readers are experiencing this bug with their Nexus 7 but if you are, give these methods a try and see if they help. If not, we feel for you and hopefully a permanent fix is on the way sooner than later.

Android 5.0 Lollipop Rolling Out Early For The Nvidia SHIELD Tablet
Well, it looks like Nvidia didn’t have the patience to wait until the 18th to push Android 5.0 Lollipop to their SHIELD Tablet. A few days ago, Nvidia announced that their gaming tablet, the SHIELD Tablet, would be receiving an update to the latest version of Android on the 18th of this month, now it appears some users are already receiving the update over-the-air this morning. Very good news for Nvidia SHIELD Tablet owners.
As of now, the update only appears to be hitting owners of the Nvidia SHIELD Tablet with Wi-Fi only, the LTE model is not receiving the update just yet. There is no need to worry if you own an Nvidia SHIELD Tablet with LTE as this is typically the way manufacturers roll out updates to their tablets, Wi-Fi variant first and then the LTE variant. And even though those of you who own an Nvidia SHIELD Tablet with LTE may have to wait a little longer for your update to Lollipop, you shouldn’t have to wait that much longer, early next week sounds reasonable.
The update to version 2.0 for the Nvidia SHIELD Tablet contains quite a few enhancements other than Android Lollipop. The update weighs in at 705.27 MB and contains the following additions and enhancements. Obviously, Android 5.0 Lollipop, Nvidia GRID on-demand gaming service, Nvidia Dabbler v2.0, enhanced DirectStylus launcher, USB Y-cable support, enhanced console ,ode with 4K output support, improved charger compatibility and performance, and last but not least optimized GPS functionality. Quite the changelog if you ask us, Nvidia SHIELD Tablet owners are definitely waking up to a nice little early Christmas present this morning.
If you own an Nvidia SHIELD tablet, regardless of whether or not it’s the Wi-Fi variant or LTE variant, we suggest hitting that “Check for Updates” button. If you don’t automatically receive the update on your device, or see it after checking for the update manually, then you will just have to play the waiting game for a little while until it hits your device.
