Google Reportedly On Verge Of Launching 'Nova,' A Cellular Phone Service To Compete With Big Four Carriers

nexus2cee_topic_google_play.png

Reports indicate that Google has taken definitive steps towards launching their own cellular phone service, making a long-whispered rumor sound like more than just hearsay. Google is working on deals with both Sprint and T-Mobile to become a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) on their infrastructure. While details are sparse for now, this might be your surest bet to avoid bloatware if there ever was one.

An MVNO is a third-party who uses a major carrier's network to provide service.

Google lists the Motorola Turbo Charger as “coming soon” in the Play Store

motorola_turbo_charger_google_play_coming_soon_012114

Devices like the Nexus 6, Motorola DROID Turbo, and HTC One (M8) are capable of enhanced charging with Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 technology. The special chargers, when paired with supported devices, powers them much quicker than ordinary chargers. Both Motorola and HTC have released their own Quick Charge 2.0 chargers, but availability has been somewhat limited. The Motorola Turbo Charger will soon be available in the Play Store. When? No one is sure. It is a good sign, however, that its status reads “coming soon.” The price listed is $34.99.

In the meantime, you can purchase the Turbo Charger directly from Motorola.

Google adds Work Chrome to Play Store, pulls it just as quickly

work_chrome_picture1

Earlier today, Google tipped its hand at a new app it’s working on called Work Chrome. It appears to be part of the Android Work program, which is promoted as an enterprise solution for companies wanting to use Android for business purposes. The app or apps could appear on personal devices with company profile log-ins or with business provided Android devices.

Just as mysteriously as the app’s arrival to the Play Store, Work Chrome was pulled by Google shortly after.

As you can see in the image above, captured by Liam Spradlin of Android Police, Work Chrome has a small indicator on the lower-right of the icon. This badge is probably what will be used to distinguish Android Work apps from their personal counterparts.

Companies like Spectralink, who provide communication solutions for healthcare settings, already create Android devices for the work environment. So perhaps we may see more of these type devices which will begin utilizing Android Work in the future. Additionally, with bring-your-own Android smartphones or business provided ones, companies will be able to keep personal data and business data separate by using Android Work and its series of applications.

Google Play edition devices are no longer available

google_play_phones_and_tablets_page_012114

Never got around to purchasing a Google Play edition device? Then it is likely safe to say you never will. Slowly but surely, we have seen Google Play edition devices vanish online. A warning was never issued by Google and the company has proceeded to pull the devices from the Play Store. Most recently, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Google Play edition was removed after months of being out of stock. Then, today, the HTC One (M8) Google Play edition was shown the door. It left the Google Play edition section with nothing to show; therefore, the initiative that pushed a stock Android experience on flagship devices is presumably gone.

Have you ever purchased a Google Play edition device? Let us know in the comments.

WhatsApp back again, this time with a web client

whatsapp_web_01

Yesterday WhatsApp hit the news after it was discovered they were banning the use of third-party apps with their platform, going so far as to temporarily ban users who were using other channels to access WhatsApp. While the WhatsApp team may have annoyed some users with that move, today’s news is much better. WhatsApp has finally launched a web client for their messaging platform that works with the desktop Chrome browser.

Being a company focused on mobile platforms, they make sure potential desktop WhatsApp users have a smartphone by requiring the scanning of a QR code in order to unlock and install the Chrome extension. If you have the latest version of WhatsApp running on your smartphone, you should have a “Web” menu option that is used to scan the QR code and launch the install process. There do seem to be a few versions of WhatsApp floating around out there that lack this option as some users with HTC One M8 devices have discovered. While that may be a problem for some Android users, WhatsApp really messed with iOS users – this new feature is not available to them at all due to “platform limitations.” Apparently WhatsApp needs a gate in the wall to the garden in order to work. Meanwhile, BlackBerry, BlackBerry 10 and Windows Phone users can join in the fun with the Android users.

Once installed, the WhatsApp Web extension works as you would expect and in a manner similar to other multi-platform, multi-device messaging applications. You can use the web interface to type out and send your message and almost instantaneously the message will show up on your smartphone in the WhatsApp app. The process works in the opposite fashion as well – type out something on your phone and then see the conversation update almost simultaneously in the web client.

If you are a WhatsApp user and want to check it out, just hit the source link below to find the QR code you will need to get started.

NFL Mobile App Gets Update For Super Bowl XLIX, Will Even Include Commercials

nflmobile

The official mobile app of the NFL is getting a few new features in preparation for February 1st's Super Bowl. Verizon customers will enjoy live streaming of the game while anyone can access news, event maps, and a variety of content for those watching and attending the big game.

The attendee-specific features seem particularly thoughtful, with Google-powered maps that have relevant locations bookmarked built into the app. Beyond that, there is also content to answer questions about stadium policy and anything else people might be concerned with.

AH Tech Talk: Microsoft Will Unify The User Experience Across Multiple Platforms With Windows 10

AH Microsoft Logo 1.1

The days of Windows 8.1 are nearing an end, as Microsoft began unveiling all the new goodies for the upcoming Windows 10 at their event for “Windows 10: The Next Chapter.” One of the announcements at the event relates to Microsoft’s Outlook email client. With Windows 10 they’re launching a new universal version of Outlook, which is set to work on PC’s, smartphones, and tablets. Whether or not this is strictly going to be limited to Windows phones and tablets remains to be seen at this time, but with Microsoft’s recently more open approach to making their software available to other platforms, it wouldn’t be too far fetched to see this universal version make its way to Android at some point.

They’re also going to be launching a new touch-friendly version of Microsoft office, which will also be available through smartphones and tablets just like their new universal version of Outlook. This new suite of Office apps is also taking a universal approach, which we’ll be seeing with a lot of Microsoft’s forthcoming products and services. Windows 10 is supposed to be all about unification, and to do that they’re going to be making things as seamlessly accessible from all platforms as possible. Microsoft stated that the three major apps for Office will all come with a touch based interface for smartphones and tablets, which includes Word, Powerpoint, and Excel, all made easier for small screen viewing with documents. They’re also including wireless printing and miracast broadcasting which should make things ever more useful. One of the best features of this upcoming new suite though is the list of recent documents that will show up for users, which will be accessible on multiple devices with smaller screens. So for example, if you start some documents on a Windows 10 based tablet, you’ll be able to see those in a recent list on any number of Windows 10 based phones or other windows 10 based devices all connected to your account.

Following the trend of making things universal, Microsoft is taking a page out of Google’s book with a universal photos app that will be compatible across smartphones and the PC platform. This is going to make things fairly all inclusive, taking the photos from OneDrive as well as those physically stored on your device and merging them all into one application for easy management. You know how Google+ and the photos app on Android devices automatically adds some improvements and enhancements to photos? Microsoft is introducing something like this for their new Windows 10 photos app as well, allowing for things like automatic red eye removal and other effects. Photos will be more organizational too, with albums that can be automatically created within the app based on different criteria like time, location and date.

When we said that Microsoft is focusing on making things universal with Windows 10, we meant truly universal, which is carrying through some of the more advanced and new technology they’re looking to bring to PC’s and smaller screen devices like smartphones and tablets. We’re talking about holographic apps. Windows introduced the likes of Holographic computing today as well as their tech that makes it all possible, the Microsoft HoloLens. With Microsoft’s vision, this head worn holographic computer would allow things like placing virtual(holographic)objects on real life surfaces,(think about the way Tony Stark uses the 3D holographic models in the Iron Man movies, not quite like that, but you get the idea)and in front of the user that could be interacted with like everything was physically in front of you. The types of things this could be applied to are potentially vast, although gaming is the first thing that comes to mind with something like this. Microsoft is building the API’s for this technology into all Windows 10 platforms, and they’re making it so that even regular apps can be transitioned into carrying the holographic ability to be used with the HoloLens. The lenses themselves on the HoloLens headset are see through so they shouldn’t interrupt the user’s vision, and they include spatial sound so the wearer can easily hear what’s behind them and hear more accurately where sounds are coming from. It’s all sounding very futuristic but very, very cool.

Now for the gamers. Microsoft is taking a huge focus to gaming with Windows 10, allowing for cross platform game streaming from Xbox One to Windows 10 PC’s. Windows has always been the preferred platform gaming on computers, and that hasn’t changed. We’ve already seen some applications of cross platform game streaming through Nvidia’s shield tablet using their GRID software, enabling users to stream games from their Steam account to the tablet. Microsoft is taking things in a slightly different direction with allowing users to play the Xbox One games on a Windows 10 PC. This will work with any Xbox One game, so there’s no limitations on what you can play through the PC, but the PC and the console do have to be connected to the same local network for this feature to work. It would have been much cooler if Microsoft would be allowing the streaming capability to laptops on WiFi connections anywhere you are, but let’s take things in baby steps. This is certainly a huge advancement for those interested in PC and console gaming via the Xbox platform.

As we stated above, Microsoft is making everything with Windows 10 a complete unification experience from all fronts. Making things seamless and usable across Windows 10 PC’s smartphones, and tablets. They’re eliminating the barriers between real world computing and holographic computing and the barriers between PC gaming and gaming on a console. Microsoft wants everything to work together as a sort of massive computing platform. It’ll be interesting to see where this all goes and how things work once it launches commercially.

Motorola Turbo Charger Finally Listed On The Play Store Although Still Not Available To Purchase

Moto Turbo charger

Back in September (seems a very long time ago now) at IFA, Motorola launched quite a few new devices. We got to see the 2014 Moto X, along with the Moto G and everyone went bananas for their new smartwatch, the Moto 360. See, it does feel like a long time ago right? Well, as well as all those lovely devices, Motorola also unveiled their latest tech to combat that commonly experienced issue, no battery. The tech in question was their aptly named Moto Turbo Charger. Using Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 technology inside, Motorola were able to bring to market a charger which could give you up to 8 hours usage time in as little as 15 minutes charging time. Not bad huh!

Well, that was September. Now we are on the verge of rolling over into February and the device is still not available on the Play Store. However, the current news is that it is at least getting closer. It seems, finally the Moto Turbo Charger is being listed on the Play Store, although at present it is coming with those two little words ‘coming soon’. In terms of price, well, we already know that one, as the price was announced months ago and the Play Store seem to be sticking to the price guide on this occasion, as the charger is listed at the full $34.99.

Of course, if you just cannot wait then there is nothing stopping you hot-footing it over to the Motorola website where you can actually buy the Motorola Turbo Charger. Just like the Play listing, Motorola also currently has the charger up for the same $34.99 price. So there is no real reason why you should hold out for Google. That said if you just like getting a receipt from the Play Store, then at least it does look like it will be landing soon(ish). Of course, to take advantage of the Quick Charge tech you will need a device which is also compatible with Quick Charge 2.0. Although, whatever device you are using, the Moto Turbo Charger will give you the best it possibly can. Do you already own the Turbo Charger? What’s your average charge time and on what device? Let us know

Twitter gives iOS users new ‘While you were away’ feature with recap of missed tweets, coming soon to Android

Twitter while you were away

Twitter diehards know there’s nothing worse than being away from the social network for a time, only to return and have to scroll through all the tweets you missed while you were gone. You don’t have to, but just knowing you might have missed that important Vine or your favorite celeb selfie shot is enough to drive any sane person crazy. Twitter knows your troubles, and it’s the reason they’re rolling out a new feature: “While you were away…”

As the name suggests, WYWA will give you a brief recap of the all the important tweets you missed while you were out living your life away from the internet. Twitter says these tweets are determined by engagement and other unnamed factors and the more you actually use Twitter, the less likely you are to see this feature. It’s Twitter’s way of bringing even more user friendliness to casual users, while not compromising the “real-time” nature of Twitter for frequent users.

The “While you were away…” update hits iOS users starting today, and will rollout soon for Android users and on Twitter.com. If you frequent Twitter, feel free to follow myself (@Gamercore) and Phandroid (@Phandroid) for even more Android fun and hilarity.
