The Best Android Phone You Can Buy Today

My, oh my, how things have changed in five months. The first time we told you what the best Android phone was that you can buy today, we easily picked the Galaxy S6, even saying that it would be difficult for anyone to top it throughout the year. In our new list of the best Android phones (that you are about to read), surprisingly, it didn’t even show up.

That’s pretty wild if you think about it. A phone, that was easily the best Samsung had introduced in two years, topped everything on the market and then some, yet five months later isn’t even one we would suggest as a must-buy today. It just shows you how good phones are today and how improvements are still showing from one to the next within a few month period.

So what did top today’s list of the best Android phone you can buy? Let’s find out.

The best Android phone you can buy today is the Nexus 6P.

nexus 6p vs

Why? For the first time in Nexus history, I think Google has gotten it all right with the Nexus 6P. The phone is beautiful and made with premium materials, has one of the best sets of specs money can buy, uses a really good QHD AMOLED display, has stereo front-facing speakers, and features a top tier camera you will have confidence in, all at a price well below most other flagships.

With a starting price of $499 and with this combination of great hardware, software, and the fastest updates to new versions of Android, any complaints we can come up with, don’t hold for long. Plus, this phone works on every single US carrier and gives you wireless freedom to choose the wireless service that best fits your needs, has a fantastic fingerprint scanner, will last you through a day on a single charge, and is helping introduce the world to USB Type-C.

What’s wrong with it, though? One could complain about the size of the phone, limited availability, and lack of an SD card slot, water resistance, and wireless charging, but most of those complaints feel like we’re nitpicking. OK, I’ll give you the size argument as this phone is quite large. In fact, it’s close to being as large as LG’s ridiculously oversized V10, only this phone manages to feel so much better in hand. And honestly, since almost every single phone released these days is a whale on some level, it just seems like wasted breath complaining about size. It’s not like you have much of a choice any longer – big phones are here to stay and your only option.

Seriously, Google did such a great job ticking all of the boxes here that this is the easiest Nexus recommendation I have ever made. In the past, all Nexus phones included a “but,” but not this time.

Be sure to read our Nexus 6P review if you haven’t already. You can buy the Nexus 6P at the Google Store.

A really close runner-up is the Samsung Galaxy Note 5.

galaxy note 5 vs

Why? The only reason the Galaxy Note 5 isn’t the best phone you can buy today is because of its software. Otherwise, this phone is every bit as good as the Nexus 6P, if not better in a number of ways. The Galaxy Note 5 is stunningly gorgeous with its metal frame and glass paneling. It also features the best smartphone camera I have ever used, the best display in any mobile device, is a showcase for exclusive Samsung features like fast wireless charging and Samsung Pay, and includes an S Pen should you need one!

Like the 6P, this a large phone, but Samsung has done such an incredible job at designing it, that it almost feels small when you hold it next to Google’s Nexus. It has this glorious curve to its backside that fits so well in your hand and zero side bezel, leaving you with a “large” phone in the footprint of something you might think is much smaller.

What’s so bad about the software? Nothing is specifically “bad” about the Note 5’s software, it’s just that it’s not as clean, fast, or up-to-date as what you’ll get with the Nexus 6P. The Galaxy Note 5 runs Samsung’s bloated and known-to-get-slower-over-time TouchWiz skin, and isn’t yet running Android 6.0 Marshmallow nor do we even know when it will. Samsung seems to have gotten much better about software updates over the past year, so there is a chance you will see the major update before long. It’s just that when you aren’t Google’s phone with direct lines to Google’s latest software updates, you get interference from manufacturers and carriers, and that can lead to down-the-road frustration.

The Note 5 is absolutely a tech wonder that you can’t go wrong with, assuming that having the latest software isn’t an area you care much about.

Be sure to read our Galaxy Note 5 review if you haven’t already. You can buy the Note 5 from Samsung and all of the major US carriers.

If you can’t stand either of those phones, go with the Moto X Pure Edition.

moto x pure edition vs

Why? Because it’s a lot like a Nexus in terms of the clean software approach, yet Motorola is still offering one of the best add-on software packages available in Moto Display and Voice. Along with that valuable software approach, Motorola will let you fully customize this phone to your liking and will sell it to you directly for as low as $399 with unlocked connectivity on all of the major US carriers. Motorola also introduced their best mobile camera ever in the Moto X Pure and re-introduced a microSD slot, something neither of the phones above have.

Why doesn’t it top the 6P or Note 5, though? This phone doesn’t have a fingerprint scanner or a top-tier display, and Motorola’s software support post-Lenovo acquisition has really come into question. In fact, that’s really the only major issue here. We just don’t know if we can rely on Motorola for timely and prolonged software updates.

Be sure to read our Moto X Pure Edition review if you haven’t already. You can buy the Moto X Pure Edition directly from Motorola’s store.

The Nexus 6, last year’s flagship Nexus device, is back for a third or fourth (I’ve lost track) time through an eBay deal for an absurdly low $289 price. And again, this for for a brand new, unlocked Nexus 6 in Midnight Blue with 32GB of storage. This is also the XT1103 model, which is the North American variant that works on all carriers here, including Verizon.

MetroPCS Intros Music Unlimited, Streaming That Won’t Count Against Your Data

MetroPCS, the prepaid wireless service owned by T-Mobile, is set to incorporate one of its parent company’s popular service features into its own plans. Announced today, Music Unlimited, which is basically T-Mobile’s Music Freedom, allows customers to stream music from preselected services with none of the data counting against your monthly allotment. This feature will be available on all plans priced at $40/month and higher.

As for which services for streaming music are supported, there is Apple Music, Pandora, iHeartRadio, Google Play Music, SiriusXM, Tidal Music, Rdio, Spotify, Rhapsody, SoundCloud, and a ton more.

Additionally, MetroPCS added 1GB of high-speed data to its $40 and $50 plans, while also boosting Mobile Hotspot tethering on its Unlimited 4G LTE plan from 6GB to 8GB. Data Maximizer, also announced, is utilizing the same technology as T-Mobile’s Binge On, allowing customers to watch up to three times more video while streaming on a data network. It’s not free streaming, but it is properly “optimized,” which means 480p streaming from select services.

These changes will go into effect starting Thursday, November 19.

FYI: Verizon’s $20 Unlimited Data Increase and Device Payment Upgrades Arrive in Your Next Billing Cycle

In case you had not looked at a calendar recently, you may not have realized that November 15 has come and gone and Verizon has indeed begun increasing legacy unlimited data plans by $20 to $49.99 per month. With that unfortunate change, customers hanging onto unlimited data plans do get one partial bonus, though – the option to upgrade through a device payment plan and still keep those unlimited data plans. Before you run and upgrade or fire up your bill to see that extra $20 up-charge, understand that you may not be able to do either at this time.

A number of our readers (I looked into it as well) actually tried to go upgrade yesterday and today, only to find that Verizon’s systems were still trying to take away their unlimited data plan. As you can imagine, we all backed out and said, “WTF?” As we mentioned in our initial write-up about the impending change, the $20 price increase wasn’t going to hit your bill until “your next bill after November 15.” That appears to apply to device payment plan upgrades as well.

If you want to upgrade or punch a screen once you see the $49.99 charge for your unlimited data plan going forward, you’ll have to figure out when your next billing cycle starts. To do that, you’ll need to login to your account, click the “View Usage Details” button in the center of your My Account area, then look for your “Billing Cycle.” It should look like this:

Screen Shot 2015-11-16 at 12.00.02 PM

So if I want to upgrade to a new phone with a device payment plan, I can do so after 12/6.

Make sense?

Cheers Aaron and Abel!

Nexus 6P is One Step Closer to T-Mobile Band 12 LTE Support

You have probably heard T-Mobile customers ask about band 12 (700MHz spectrum) LTE support for this or that phone over the past year. They talk about it a lot because it’s a huge deal in terms of connectivity on their phones, or at least will be once their phones get support for it and T-Mobile builds out band 12 in their frequently visited areas. You see, band 12 (or Extended Range LTE), at least according to T-Mobile, “reaches twice as far and is four times better in buildings,” two areas that T-Mobile has clearly needed help in over the years.

The problem with band 12 right now is that there are a couple of situations at play that need to be fulfilled in order for it to be used. First, T-Mobile has to build out band 12 support to an area. Second, you need a phone that can take advantage of it. As T-Mobile has continued to cover its subscriber base with band 12, its phone line-up is slowly coming on board as well. It hasn’t been a simple or straight-forward process, though, as phones like the Nexus 6P are still waiting for it.

When originally announced, Google said that they were working with T-Mobile to get band 12 supported by the time the phone shipped. Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. However, as of today (or at least within the last week), it looks like we are one step closer to that reality.

T-Mobile has built out a dedicated page on its website that lists the phones currently compatible with their Extended Range LTE. The Huawei Nexus 6P is now a part of the list. I was unsuccessful in seeing when the phone was added, but it appears to be a recent addition.

So now, the Nexus 6P is fully certified, if you will, for T-Mobile’s band 12, but the phone isn’t fully ready as far as we know. It will likely still take a software update from Google to enable. Thankfully, Google can be pretty quick with software updates if they want, since they send them directly to phones without much need for carrier interference.

Band 12 LTE is almost here, 6P owners.

On a related note, the LG Nexus 5X has not been listed yet by T-Mobile.

Google Search Now Answering Your More Complex Questions

Over the years, Google Search has become increasingly better at answering all of our questions. Personally, I ask Google ten or more questions a day, whether it is for sports scores, hours of a business, or anything else that comes across my mind. Today, Google announced that Search is getting even more intelligent, now answering complex questions while truly understanding the meaning of the inquiry.

Inside this server-side change, Search now recognizes and understands superlatives, like tallest and largest, as well as ordered items. With this, you can ask Google, “Who are the tallest Trail Blazers players?” and “What are the largest cities in California?”

In addition, Google is now reaching back into history, capable of answering complex questions that have to do with the past, regardless of the subject. For example, you can ask, “What was the population of Singapore in 1965?” or “What was the SF Giants roster in 2014?” Each of these questions brings back a audible answer, not just search results.

Lastly, Search is able to understand complex combinations. These questions can include a time, person, and place. For example, “What was the US population when Bernie Sanders was born?” and “Who was the US President when the Angels won the World Series?”

These changes are taking place automatically on Google’s servers, so your phone should already be able to handle these questions. Go give it a shot.

This Could be the Samsung Galaxy Marshmallow Update Roadmap

According to a leaked document, Samsung intends to update its top US devices to Marshmallow starting in December, finishing off updates in February of next year. From what the document claims, the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ will be the first to receive Marshmallow in December, with the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge set to receive Android 6.0 in January.

Continuing, the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge are reported to receive Android 6.0 in February of 2016, while the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Alpha are currently still waiting on approval. The previous devices are all listed under “Phase 1,” while all Phase 2 devices, such as the Galaxy A8, A7, A5, and Galaxy E lineup are all “waiting approval.”

Typically, Samsung is pretty bad at communicating update availability, given their smartphones are deployed across the globe on hundreds of carriers. This makes pinpointing exact update times rather difficult. However, for us in the US, rest assured that Marshmallow will indeed come sooner or later.

Samsung owners, are you ready for Marshmallow?

Beginning Friday, November 20, folks can head into AT&T and pick up the Galaxy View from Samsung, starting at just $99 on a qualifying agreement. The Galaxy View is a crazy-big 18.4″ tablet that allows folks to ditch the norm, who don’t mind consuming mass amounts of media straight from their lap or coffee table.

Given AT&T’s direct relationship to DIRECTV, the company is preloading its TV service on the device, and for a limited time, you can pick up the Galaxy View at a largely discounted rate if you sign up for DIRECTV at the time of purchase. For new customers who sign a two-year service agreement through DIRECTV, you can buy the Galaxy View for just $99. Existing DIRECTV customers that activate a new line with a smartphone on AT&T Next can also get the Galaxy View for $99.99, with a two-year wireless agreement.

With the large display, accessing over 100+ live TV channels could be enjoyable for many, in addition to the football fans who can watch all of the NFL Red Zone coverage they want, all from the tablet over AT&T’s 4G LTE network.

For specs, the Galaxy View features an 18.4″ Full HD display, 1.6GHz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 2.1MP front-facing camera, microSD slot, 4G LTE connectivity, Android 5.1+ with TouchWiz, and a 5,700mAh battery.

DEAL: Tronsmart 5-Port Quick Charge2.0 Hub for $27.99, 3-Port Wall Charger for $9.99

Fast or quick charging is still one of the best smartphone features introduced within the past five or so years. As battery technology hasn’t necessarily improved at all, this technology has helped alleviate some of the pain associated with quickly dying batteries. Thanks to quick charging and Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0, you can charge your dead phone to 50% or more within a matter of minutes in many cases, assuming your phone is supported (and it probably is). As long as you have a wall outlet near, you almost don’t need to worry anymore about battery life.

If you have yet to fully equip your office and home with Quick Charge 2.0 chargers, we have two deals for you today to consider. One is a Tronsmart 5-Port Desktop Hub that supplies Quick Charge 2.0 current through all 5 ports and runs $27.99 after $10 discount. With this desktop hub, your whole family can quick charge at the same time. The other is for a standard 3-port wall adapter that can be had for just $9.99 ($10 discount).

Motorola’s New Marketing Campaign has Ashton Kutcher Asking, “Would You Rather?”

Uh oh, another celebrity has signed on to promote a well-known smartphone manufacturer. Did anyone show Ashton Kutcher the Robert Downey Jr. x HTC partnership before he signed up to be Motorola’s next face? No? Or maybe he didn’t care because there was a lot of cash involved? Whatever the case may be, best of luck, Ashton!

In a series of videos posted to Motorola’s YouTube channel this morning, we get to see the focus of a new marketing campaign that does indeed feature the actor best known for his work as Kelso or Demi Moore’s one-time other half or the guy who awkwardly replaced Charlie Sheen. The campaign is a “Would you rather?” over a bunch of topics that try to point out how in love/obsessed we are with our phones.

They ask people on the street things like, “Would you rather give up sex for a month or drop your phone?” or “Would you rather spend the holidays without your phone or your family?” They also go into an indoor, closed-door setting where they put people through some tests to decide how in love they are with phones.

Of course, some of the tests end up showing how fragile your phone is compared to ones that Motorola makes, like the DROID Turbo 2 (our review), and that dropping doesn’t have to be scary. Or they show hands-free features on the Moto X Pure Edition (our review). You get the idea.

But Ashton Kutcher, tho.

OnePlus One and 2 Get Marshmallow Update in Q1 2016

Curious when your OnePlus device will see an update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow? According to OnePlus, you shouldn’t expect it before next year.

Through a forum post, OnePlus’ Carl Pei announced that the OnePlus One will get Android 6.0 via Cyanogen OS in the first quarter of 2016. He noted that they created a Marshmallow “community build” of their own OxygenOS for the One, but “this isn’t what the product officially ships with” and thus the reasoning for the official update to Cyanogen on the way.

As for the OnePlus 2, owners should also be on the lookout for an update to Android 6.0 in Q1 of next year. On a related note, OnePlus will be switching to the official Marshmallow API for the phone’s fingerprint sensor with this update.

Oh, and what about the newly launched OnePlus X? OnePlus wasn’t prepared to announce anything other than they are “working hard to bring Marshmallow as soon as possible.”
