This Icon Pack is Hot: Artius

People may disagree with me, but ever since Dave Kover — also known as kovdev — stopped slinging icon packs onto Google Play, it’s sometimes a struggle to find a new pack I want to deck my phone up with. Thankfully, there appears to be new talent popping up all over the place, and an icon pack called Artius from Shamrock Studios suits my needs quite well.

Inside, there are over 1,000 icons made in high definition, looking super crispy on my phone’s large QHD display. The styling is boxy, giving off a Tersus-like vibe, in my opinion. Even with the slight tilt and shading near the top, the icons are simplistic and minimal, offering just enough for you to figure out what you are looking at. My one issue, which will likely be addressed, is the lack of a better Instagram icon. Sorry, but I need me my deluxe Instagram icon.

One thing I most enjoy about many new icon packs is that they feature a ton of great wallpapers, on top of fantastic icons. This pack is no exception. Inside the app, 20 cloud-based wallpapers are there for your applying, all of which look to compliment the icons.

All of this for the price of $2. Not too shabby.

Pixate Joins Google’s Design Team, Offers Studio Service for Free

Pixate, a desktop platform offering designers an easier way to create great-looking applications, has joined the Google design team. To celebrate, the Studio service from Pixate is now being offered for free, with a slash in pricing for the company’s cloud-based services as well.

As of right now, no dollar amount has been placed on this acquisition, but since Google is always trying to help developers create better apps for users, even those on iOS, they can spend whatever they see fit if you ask me.

In a piece posted to the Pixate blog, CEO Paul Colton states, “Our small team at Pixate has some really big ideas, and with the help of Google we’ll be able to bring those ideas to the design community at scale. We’ve become an essential part of the workflow for tens of thousands of designers, and are excited about expanding our mission at Google to reach millions of product teams worldwide.”

If you are an app design, you can download Studio right now, for free.

Moto G (3rd Gen) Might Have Been Fully Outed Thanks to Retailer Listings

Motorola is hosting an event on July 28 in New York, London, and Brazil that will more than likely be used to showcase a new Moto G (3rd gen). The leaks for this phone have been everywhere dating back a good month or so, but we received the biggest of them all today, thanks to a German  Swiss retailer. In fact, I think we now know just about everything we needed to know about this phone, outside of potential Moto Maker customizations, assuming this retailer isn’t just filling up a spec sheet with information based off rumor and speculation.

So what do we have?

According to German Swiss retailer Digitec, the pictures here are of the white and black models of the new Moto G (3rd gen). The phone will sport a 5-inch FHD (1080p) display, stereo sound, 2070mAh battery, 1.7GHz Snapdragon 615 processor, Adreno 405 GPU, 2GB RAM, 8GB storage (with microSD support), 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and Android 5.0 Lollipop.

All of that sounds about right, outside of the battery and Android 5.0. A leak from earlier this week showed a sticker on the front of a supposed Moto G (3rd gen) that read 2470mAh for the battery. We are also fully expecting Motorola to ship Android 5.1 or 5.1.1 on this phone.

A phone that we believe to be the new Moto G (3rd gen) has surfaced in three separate filings at the FCC in recent weeks, showing models ready for Verizon, Sprint, and GSM carriers as an unlocked phone.

What do you think? A 5-inch 1080p phone with a decent processor for Moto G pricing could be some kind of a deal.

AT&T Raising Upgrade Fees to $45, Will Add $15 Activation Fee to Next and BYOD Customers on August 1

According to sources, AT&T will raise its activation/upgrade fees for customers when signing one and two-year contracts, but also add-on an activation fee for AT&T Next and Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) customers, starting August 1.

The new activation/upgrade fee for one and two-year agreements is raising from $40 to $45, which gives AT&T the highest activation fee in the industry (Verizon is still at $40 for now). Going forward after August 1, should you choose to sign-up for a new contract to receive a discounted phone, you will pay $5 more than you used to.

In related news, AT&T Next will no longer be a zero-out-of-pocket installment plan. Come August 1, customers who are new to AT&T Next will have to pay a $15 activation fee when they pick up a new phone. This $15 fee also applies to those who bring their own device (BYOD) and sign-up for a new line of service.

Current AT&T Next customers who have an active installment plan prior to August 1 will not be charged the $15 fee on their next upgrade. AT&T has said that this “waiver” is subject to change. In other words, you may not have to pay the $15 fee at your next upgrade, but don’t surprised if you have to after that.

It’s now July 21, so if you need to upgrade, now would be the time.

Nokia Reported to Sell Off HERE Maps Division to German Automakers

HERE Maps, Nokia’s own map platform for smartphones and vehicles, may soon be in the hands of German automakers. According to sources, private acquisition meetings between Nokia and a consortium of Germany’s top automakers will lead to the selling of the HERE division. As it is reported, the consortium consists of BMW, Audi, and Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz.

Reports claim the deal could go through by the end of this month, but of course, the deal could also fall through. It is reported that the deal could be worth a little under $3 billion if Nokia decides to sell the division.

While we in the Android world seem mostly concerned with Google Maps and Android Auto, drivers in Europe and those who import vehicles could see the affects of this potential deal in the coming future.

We will keep you posted on what happens.

Report: Moto G (3rd Gen) Will Feature IPX7 Water Resistance

According to the latest photo leak, showing off the plastic screen protector on the frontside of the upcoming Moto G (3rd Gen), Motorola’s new budget-friendly smartphone will feature a bit of water resistance, coming with a rating of IPX7. This rating is not good for those who may want to go swimming with their phones, but if you happen to get a few splashes of liquid on the device, you should be just fine.

Technically, an IPX7 rating should allow for incidental exposure to water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, but it would be a good idea not to allow that to happen. A previous leak also pointed to possible water resistance for the Moto G (3rd Gen), so this photo lends much credit to that report.

Also posted on that plastic cover are a few specifications, including 4G LTE connectivity, 13MP rear-facing camera + 5MP front-facing camera, 2,470mAh battery, microSD card slot, and quad-core processor. All of this information was previously leaked, so there’s nothing too crazy.

Will the IPX7 rating influence your purchase of the Moto G?

Sprint’s Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ Join the FCC Party

Last week, we saw almost every single US carrier variant of the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+ stop off at the FCC outside of those headed to Sprint. Who knows why America’s 4th largest carrier was left out, but all is good in the world now. This morning, both phones showed up at the FCC under model numbers SM-N920P (Note 5) and SM-G928P (S6 Edge+).

Information in the documents attached to the filings didn’t give us anything new in our brief scans, other than these are indeed headed for Sprint. Then again, the model numbers ending in “P” gave that away.

Here are the label images that show the basic shapes of each phone, along with all of the bands tested for Sprint’s network.

Summer 2015 Android Mini Collectibles Released, 2-Pack for $20

Two new Android Mini collectibles have been launched to the Dead Zebra shop, courtesy of Andrew Bell. Titled Summer 2015, these yellow Bugdroids represent gorgeous days at the beach, and the unavoidable truth that sharks are real, and do sometimes enjoy the taste of human flesh. Sorry, that was morbid.

This Summer 2015 pack is priced at just $20 for the two piece set, ready to be added to your growing collection that your significant other doesn’t quite understand. But hey, this is your hobby, so if they don’t like it, tell them to step off.

You can pick up these two minis, that almost look like little Minions, on the Dead Zebra ship right now.

DROID Turbo Getting Minor Update to 23.11.39, Soak Test Set to Start

Even though the DROID Turbo only began receiving an update to Android 5.1 three weeks ago, another update for the phone is ready this morning. A number of our readers received an invite to a soak test for the update through Motorola’s Feedback Network last night and at least one non-soak tester already received it this morning.

The update appears to be software version 23.11.39, which must be minor knowing the original Lollipop update was 23.11.38.

A changelog on Verizon’s site lists out all of the changes that came with Lollipop, so my guess is that Verizon and Motorola will stop that original update and instead push this new version to everyone. They must have caught a bug that is fixed in this new build.

I should point out that this new changelog once again mentions multi-user and guest mode as being included, but that would shock me.

To pull the update, head into Settings>About phone.

Cheers Steve, P, A, J, J, A, C, J, J, N, B, and S!

AT&T Suspended Moto X (1st Gen) Android 5.1 Update

AT&T isn’t telling us what the deal is, but according to their support page for the Moto X (1st gen), the Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the device has been suspended.

The update originally began rolling out on July 8 to those outside of a soak test of the update, then was supposedly available to be pulled on July 17, but now, things seem to have changed. AT&T has only said that they “apologize for any inconvenience” and that they are “working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”

Tough to say if there is an issue with the update that has already landed on most of your phones or if they are just having a problem delivering it.

We’ll update this post as we have more.
