Don’t Miss These Android Stories: February 19, 2016

We are on the eve of MWC, where Samsung and LG will take the stage to unveil their respective flagship devices. Leading up to this Sunday, we have seen a ton of leaks on the Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, LG G5, and even the One M10 from HTC. It’s been a crazy week, to say the least.

Beyond device leaks, Apple stood up against the FBI, Motorola announced it will not send out Lollipop updates for the DROID Ultra, Maxx and Mini, Nextbit’s Robin was made available for purchase, and we took a stroll down memory lane with a hands-on video of Android 2.2 running on the “OG” DROID. Good times, indeed.

If you missed any of it, all of the biggest Android stories are linked below.

We’ll catch you on Sunday for all of the MWC excitement, folks.

Chromium Bug Tracker Points to Possible “Morning Reads” Feature for Chrome

According to references for “zine” and “morning reads” inside of Chromium, the open source project on which Chrome is built, we could be seeing a fancy new feature come to Chrome hopefully in the near future.

Right now, the references are from bug tracking indexes, which detail a morning gathering of top news you may be interested in. To put it simply, when you wake up in the morning, Chrome could offer you a basic overview of news that you may be interested in reading from across the web.

Below is a list of “possible improvements” that are listed for the feature inside of Chromium. According to what is written, Morning Reads could feature specific fetch times, fetch times depending on battery charge amount, the ability to swipe certain stories away, and more.

Some possible improvements, roughly from simple to advanced:

  • Fetch only during certain times of day (e.g. between 6 AM and 9 AM, for *morning* reads).
  • Vary the frequency based on charging state (e.g. every 30 mins while charging, every 2 hours otherwise, all only if on an unmetered connection).
  • Possibly coalesce with other wake-up events (service worker background sync) – if Chrome is being started anyway, the extra cost is much lower.
  • Have fancy prediction for when the user is likely to visit the NTP, and fetch an update just before that.

No official word from Google has been made on this possible feature, and since it’s still being worked on, we could be a ways away from any type of release.

If Chrome offered a Morning Reads feature, would you take advantage?

Yikes: DROID Ultra, Maxx, and Mini Won’t Even Get Lollipop Now

In July of 2013, days before Motorola was set to announce the original Moto X, the company was somehow persuaded by Verizon to announce a brand new DROID line. That line of phones included the DROID Ultra, MAXX, and Mini, all of which were very similar to the Moto X, only they came with the typical DROID experience of over-the-top branding and marketing. They were, by all means, flagship phones for their time that most figured would see the typical two years worth of updates. For the most part, that happened.

Motorola and Verizon issued update after update to each for a solid year before Google released Android 5.0 Lollipop. Shortly after Google made Lollipop official, Motorola was quick to announce which of its phones would be updated to it. That list, as you can imagine, included the Ultra, MAXX, and Mini and was posted in October 2014. Months went by and Motorola failed to release the 5.0 update to its DROID line, but said in January of 2015 that it was all happening “soon.”

Fast forward to today and owners of those DROID phones from 2013 still do not have Lollipop. According to Motorola’s David Schuster, they’ll never see it.

In a post to his Google+ account today, Schuster has apologized to owners of the Ultra, MAXX, and Mini, noting that they understand “how important software updates are to our customers.” He then says that they are “unable to provide the upgrade” to Lollipop, but that they have an offer for owners of these phones to try and make the situation slightly better.

The offer is for discounts on the DROID Turbo 2 or MAXX 2. Motorola is offering a $100 discount on the Turbo 2 and $50 off of the MAXX 2, should you be interested. To access those discounts, head over to Motorola’s site.

At this point, I don’t think anyone should be shocked by this news. After all, these phones are more than two years old and are a full two major OS updates behind (Remember, Marshmallow has been out for months already.). The only thing that really shocks me is why they waited this long to make this announcement.

Folks, this is what happens when you get bought by other companies who don’t care about past products or relationships with customers. Support staff are cut, teams are reduced, and companies like Motorola are left without the manpower to take care of the people who bought into their word years ago. It’s sad and unfortunate.

Droid Life Q&A Sessions: Volume 37 Answers

We are back with our answers for Volume 37 of the DL Q&A Sessions. Earlier this week, we asked you to send in questions before this weekend’s MWC, and you didn’t disappoint. We received great questions about Moto’s future under Lenovo, and which OEM design department we would want to consult for.

Beyond tech, we talk basketball Finals predictions, Kanye’s latest album, and which non-tech related bet we would make if given the opportunity. As mentioned, MWC is only a couple of days away, so be on the lookout for yet another Q&A Session once we have had enough time to soak everything in from LG and Samsung over the next week.

Without further ado, let’s get to it.

Reminder: K is Kellen and T is Tim.

What do you expect to see from Motorola’s flagship this year, under Lenovo’s watch?

K:  Motorola has had 3 years in a row of really, really good phones that were some of our favorites. But I’m starting to feel like everyone else is taking chances and doing really big things to push the envelope. I know that Motorola will try to hover at a lower price point, which means they’ll have to cut something here or there, yet I wish they wouldn’t. I kind of want Moto to take a chance – I just don’t know that they will.

T:  I don’t believe folks should expect anything too different this year. Moto has a proven brand and device lineup, so it’s my belief that we can expect more of the same; good hardware, basic Android OS, customization, and low price. It is a formula that is working well for them, and unless Lenovo doesn’t care to see Moto fail, they will keep it that way. I have high hopes for another great device from Moto in 2016.

If you had to bet your future on one tech and one non-tech company, which two would you choose?

K:  The easy answers are Apple and Nike. Each has such a massive advantage over competitors in terms of the money they make and profits they roll in. But beyond that, they also have this brand recognition that no one else has or may ever have. Nike is cool. Apple is cool. And they have both been cool for so long and so solidly, that I just don’t know how you could go wrong there.

T:  For tech, “hoverboards” with wheels or portable DVD players. Can’t go wrong, right? Jokes aside, in the tech space, you would be crazy not to go with Google or Apple. Both companies appear to be at the top of their game right now, although, Google and Alphabet could be doing better to articulate what is actually taking place to the public with regard to its corporate structuring. For example, I spoke with many friends who are not in the tech space and they had the notion that Google bought a company called Alphabet and was combining resources. Little things like that would be helpful. As for non-tech bets, I guess Disney or the Star Wars brand if I could.

If offered a position as a design consultant with any phone manufacturer, which would you choose and why? Also, what would be your first recommendation?

K:  Samsung or LG because they both have so much going for them. They also have enough power to really push the industry forward by trying new things or implementing new tech. But I would start with their Android skins and throw them in the garbage. The single things that seem to hold back these companies from being beloved by techies like us, is their terrible, bloated software experiences.

T:  Give me 5 minutes alone in a locked room with Samsung or LG’s UI design team and I’ll solve all of the jank-related issues. Rip it all out, trash it, start from the ground up. We need useful features, but absolutely nothing that will hinder speed and performance. In fact, our goal going forward will be to speed up Android, not slow it down. As for hardware design, I don’t know if I would be the best person for the job, as I would have everyone remake the One X from HTC.

Which OEM releases the “Dud of the Year” (phone/tablet/smartwatch)?

K:  I would leans towards HTC because they are so irrelevant at this point, but the One M10 is probably going to be a really good phone. It’s hard to make a dud in 2016. Maybe whatever Lenovo pushes Motorola into making? Assuming it’s not at all in line with the previous years of Moto phones.

T:  It’s still February, but I suppose if I had to throw someone under the bus without even giving them a shot, it would be Google and any attempt they pursue to create an Android tablet. Sorry, I love Google, but dislike Android tablets.

What did you think of The Life of Pablo?

K:  I’ve basically had Waves, FML, Real Friends, and Wolves playing in order, on repeat for the entire week. The rest of the album is pretty sub-par, but these four tracks are so fire.

T:  Kanye, as a human being, makes me ill. His music is alright lately, but his ego is repulsive. I refuse to use Tidal, so until he releases it via any other means, it shall go unheard by my ears.

What function, app or hardware should smartwatches receive, to really catch on?

K:  I don’t know that there is one. With that said, I think voice dictation could certainly improve with speed and accuracy, so that you don’t just end up pulling your phone our instead of using your watch. In fact, voice dictation across Android needs to improve. I never use it, because it fails way too often on every single device I own. Either that, or I just don’t have the patience for how slow it is.

T:  I am pleased to announce that it is not my job to solve this issue, and for that, I am extremely grateful. As of right now, the only useful thing for smartwatches to do is track fitness. Beyond that, I haven’t got a clue. If you could easily walk into a store and pay for goods using your watch (on Android Wear), or maybe do a fist bump for information (kinda like Razer Nabu), we might get close to something truly useful. As of right now, I think they look cool, but don’t serve too much of a purpose besides telling the time and having to be charged on a daily basis.

What can Google do to overcome the mentality that Android is less user-friendly than iOS?

K:  Do people still believe that? My thought is that as computers and smartphones have become more and more embedded in our lives, people have gotten smarter with how they use them. Android is no longer anymore complicated than iOS and I think because iOS has copied all of Android’s features to become more complicated, iOS users are getting smarter. Since they are getting smarter, transitioning to Android won’t be difficult at all. The hard part now is to give people a real reason to switch.

T:  If people believe that notion, it’s sad. If you ask me, with Apple’s inclusion of this no-no force touch or whatever it’s called, that OS has only become more of a confusing mess for those who are not tech savvy. Android seems pretty straightforward, but that’s because I have used it for years. When I was using the iPhone 6 for a bit, I was genuinely lost on how to share things between apps. Come to find out, you can’t even do it like you can on Android. At first, both operating systems have a learning curve, but give it a week or two and you can master either one. As for the question, I think it’s up to the users and not the companies to solve this issue or stigma.

Now that All-Star Weekend is over, who do you see going to the NBA Finals and winning?

K:  Part of me keeps thinking the Spurs could beat the Warriors, but then I wake up from that silly ass dream, shaking my head and say, “Don’t be dumb, Kellen, the Dubs might sweep the entire playoffs.”

T:  With all of the weak moves we saw in the trade deadline, Warriors have this one in the bag, as long as everyone stays healthy. I don’t see anyone cracking the code to beating them anytime too soon. And the ’96 Bulls season win record? Crushed. Destroyed. Erased. Which does make me sad.

DEAL: 128GB Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge for $499

On Sunday, Samsung is going to announce their next flagship, the Galaxy S7 (and S7 Edge). It may even go on sale by March 11. But what if you need a new phone yet don’t want to shell out full price for this year’s new hotness? Maybe you have a limited budget and are fine with last year’s Samsung flagship (all of which are still great phones, by the way). Well, take a look at the deal today on Verizon’s Galaxy S6 Edge with 128GB of storage. Thanks to a discount at eBay, you can own this version for just $499.

If you were to buy the Galaxy S6 Edge with 128GB from Verizon today, it would cost you $900. Nine hundred dollars. So yeah, the top of the line S6 Edge is available right now at a $400 discount. That’s a pretty damn good deal.

This is the Verizon model, though, so it will work best on Verizon’s network. The listing claims that it is GSM unlocked, but you won’t get LTE outside of spotty band 4 on T-Mobile or AT&T.

Our Galaxy S6 Edge review can be found here.

Here’s a Great Look at the Front and Back of the LG G5

Leading up to LG’s big announcement this Sunday, we have yet another look at the G5. Posted by @evleaks and then deleted due to Internet negativity, this is a clean shot of what we can expect hardware wise from LG. It shows the dual rear-facing cameras, fingerprint reader, and very simplistic frontside.

Earlier, we saw LG’s “Magic Slot,” which is where folks will take out and put in a fresh battery. We also wrote about a reseller site from Dubai that posted two photos of the hardware. The overall picture of the G5 is coming together quite nicely, but we still have yet to see details on the software.

Share your thoughts, negative or positive, down below in the comments.

Friday Poll: Galaxy S7, S7 Edge, or LG G5?

In two days, we’ll be able to stop posting leaks and tell you all of the official details of the Samsung Galaxy S7, Galaxy S7 Edge, and LG G5. At this point, you are probably as sick of the leaks as we are, but try to hang in there. These phones leak like crazy for a reason – they are each a big, big deal. These are the flagships from Samsung and LG to take us into 2016. These phones set the standard for Android for the year ahead and are typically each company’s best selling line of products.

With that in mind, which of the three are you most excited about at this point? Have you seen enough from Samsung to upgrade from the Galaxy S6? Have you seen enough from LG to upgrade from the G4? Have seen enough from either to get you to switch manufacturers? Or, are you planning on sticking with what you’ve got until something else comes along later in year?

In the poll below, tell us which you would choose or are leaning towards before all things become official.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Latest Samsung Galaxy S7 Leaks (Updating…)

As we inch closer to the Sunday and the unveiling of the Galaxy S7, the leaks are flowing steadily. This post right here will continue to be updated with all of the latest intel we gather from across the web leading up to the big day.

Galaxy S7 vs. S7 Edge Size Comparison

In one of the latest photos, we see the Galaxy S7 sitting right next to a Galaxy S7 Edge, giving us a good idea at how much larger the Edge is over the regular S7. We know from past reports that the Galaxy S7 could feature a display size of 5.1″, while the Galaxy S7 Edge could feature a slightly curved 5.5″ display. By simply looking at the photo, it doesn’t seem that the S7 Edge is all that much larger than the Galaxy S7, but it is a bit taller. To compare, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ features a display size of 5.7″.

If you were planning on picking up one of these phones, which would it be?

Here is the LG G5’s Magic Slot With Battery

In a sea of similarly shaped and styled smartphones, how does one standout in 2016? LG seems to be thinking that a modular approach might be the key with the soon-to-be-announced G5. In recent days, we have seen a lot of rumored heat surrounding the phone’s supposed “magic slot.” This magic slot is thought to house the phone’s battery, but could also double as a way to expand the phones audio and photography capabilities. This morning, we believe we have our first look at exactly how this “magic slot” may look with the phone’s standard battery attached.

Thanks to a Weibo user who posted the image below, we get what appears to be the retail box for an extra battery for the G5. On the box, there is a picture of a battery attached to a bottom housing that looks like it would be the portion of a magic slot that slides into a phone. The battery also says “G5” right in the center of it.

If this is indeed the G5’s battery and magic slot, you can start to visualize how this will all work. You eject the bottom portion of the phone, swap out a dead battery for a full battery, pop it back in, and go on about your day. Or, if we’re talking the “magic” portion of this all, you could attach one of these yellow batteries to an accessory add-on that could expand the phone’s capabilities.

This is actually a pretty cool idea should you be interested in tinkering or adding on features to your phone with accessories. Or maybe you are just excited about a swappable battery still being a thing in 2016.
