Campaign Backers Of The Neptune Pine Will Get Their Units In A Few Days

Wearables, wearables, wearables. Everywhere we turn there is another wearable. One such device that had initially began its journey on Kickstarter, the Neptune Pine, is beginning to come out of the woodwork and is now shipping to backers of the Kickstarter campaign. If you were one of the lucky people to get your hands on any of the backer slots before they disappeared, you’ll be pleased to know these devices will be on the way very soon to your doorstep. These are the first batch of units getting shipped out to backers as of today so it won’t be long until we start to see the first impressions from the early adopters.

The Neptune Pine reminds us of another wearable that is actually quite similar looking in design to this device, especially because of the size, which also began through crowd sourced funding and is a personal favorite of mine, the Rufus Cuff. The Neptune Pine is a little bit smaller though, but still vastly larger than any other wrist worn wearable we see out on the market currently, so it obviously has some strengths like easier typing due to the large display, and it probably also makes for a better(or perhaps easier)viewing experience. For those who didn’t get in on the campaign or simply didn’t know that it even existed, you’ll be able to place pre-orders for the device and there will be two models to choose from. A 16GB model which will set you back $349 to pre-order, or for more storage there’s the 32GB model that will set you back $449 to pre-order.

Those prices do probably sound a bit more steep than what we may be used to, and if that’s what you think we won’t disagree with you because it’s the truth. However there is a reason why they cost a little bit more and that’s the larger display, and full Android integration running Android 4.1 Jelly Bean so you can use Android apps on it, and other specs we don’t see in wearables just yet like 2G/3G/4G/WiFi/Bluetooth support. It also has a built in rear and front camera, a built in mic, speaker and headphone jack, as well as many other features. This is basically like a small Android phone on your wrist, and it looks awesome. Congrats to the backers, the first round will be there soon, with the second batch shipping out in the next couple months in November.

Google Search updated to version 3.6 with new app deep linking and hints of a hands free mode

Google is pushing out an update to Google Search, bringing the app to version 3.6. This is a really minor update with the only visible change being the ability for developers to deep link app information through Android’s linking API. This basically means you’ll be able to be linked directly to content in another app, if you have it installed and the developer has implemented it within their own application.

Aside from the deep linking stuff, there are more hints of the hands free mode that Google is rumored to be working on. Activating hands free mode still doesn’t work with this update, but there are many resources and strings within the app that refer to a hands free mode. That should mean that a release for hands free options on Google Search should be right around the corner, but until Google says so, nothing is official.

YouTube, Play Music, and Hangouts all receiving minor updates

Google is pushing out updates to a few of its apps, including Hangouts, YouTube, and Play Music. None of the updates are huge, but they bring a few extra features that are definitely worth having.

Hangouts is the most minor update of the three, bringing no noticeable changes in features. This one is likely just a bugfix update, so your app should crash less, perform better, etc. Nothing to get overly excited about.

The YouTube update brings some small changes, including a View All button in the slide out menu that takes you to all of your YouTube playlists, and playlists have received a context menu that allows you to save and share them. If you don’t use playlists on YouTube often, you might not get much use out it, but for others that should be a pretty well received feature.

Play Music has gotten the biggest update, bringing along a few new widgets to slap on your home screen. There is now a 1×1 “I’m Feeling Lucky” widget and a 3×1 widget with an update look and color scheme that can be resized to 4×4 to show full album artwork and playback controls. The Download Queue within the application has also been renamed to Manage Downloads, and it’ll show you your available storage space at the top. That should help users that try to keep their internal storage stuffed with downloaded music.

YouTube Updates Adds Minor Tweaks To The Playlists Category

Here’s one more Google app for the update Wednesday trend that continues basically every week, YouTube. Earlier we saw an update come to Google Play Music which really only added a couple new things, or rather one new thing and one updated thing, which were the widgets for the app and included the updates look to the regular 4 x 1 widget and a new 1 x 1 widget Die button for the “I’m Feeling Lucky Radio” features of the service. Of course there were the usual bug fixes and improvements as well. As for the update to YouTube, the updates(changes)seem to lie within the playlists portion of the application. Other updates came in the form of Hangouts, and Search, which is probably one of the most updated Google apps.

The changes to the playlists are pretty minor, at least in the scope of visuals. Everything looks the same so there’s no brand new design or anything like that. What we’re looking at here is the addition of a new button within playlists that allows users to add stuff to certain categories. The “like” button is now gone and has been replaced with the “add” button. Google has also introduced the use of Contextual menus within playlists, and there’s now a “view all” button in the sidebar menu under your playlists category, instead of the show more button that used to exist.

No major stuff as you can see, although the official changelog hasn’t been released by Google so there could be something that got missed and that we haven’t picked up on. As always and with all matter of updates to apps, the update will take some time to roll out to users over the air and you may or may not have already seen the update notification pop up in your status tray. If you have notification updates for apps turned off you can always check for the update to YouTube within the Play Store my apps section, or you could just download it and install it on your own by hitting the link here to grab the apk file. Former Apple employee ‘Sam Sung’ auctions off viral business card for charity, bids already at $2,550

Former Apple specialist Sam Sung went viral after his extremely ironic business card began circulating around social media the world over. That now famous business card has landed on eBay where Sung is currently auctioning off the memorabilia for a good cause. Sung is promising to donate all proceeds to The Children’s Wish Foundation, BC & Yukon, a non-profit that helps grant “wishes” to terminal sick kids. An admirable move, to be sure.

Bids for the business card — which also include Sung’s old uniform and lanyard inside a picture frame — have already hit $2,550 with 9 days left before the action ends. T-Mobile Surpasses All Others To Become The Number One Provider In Prepaid

Prepaid services have come a long way since a mere 5 years ago. Competitive prepaid wireless services plans are available on every major network here in the U.S., but as of today,(and maybe it should go without saying)T-mobile has now surpassed all other major carriers in the U.S. for the number one spot in available prepaid wireless service plans. That means Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T are all behind the nation’s number four wireless provider when it comes to non-contracted prepaid plans, an achievement that likely wasn’t a walk in the park since competition had likely started to heat up to combat T-Mobiles amazing deals when it comes to prepaid. Just because it wasn’t a walk in the park doesn’t mean it was too difficult either, as T-Mobile has had pretty competitive and attractive prepaid plans for quite some time.

T-Mobile has had a strings of promising and otherwise fairly successful quarters recently, adding tons of new subscribers, and they have been making big pushes on their prepaid wireless services for the last year or two. After this latest(and also strong)quarterly performance report T-Mobile had the success and the edge they needed to overtake all three other major carriers and grab the prepaid service crown. Prepaid service has become increasingly more popular in the last couple of years and T-mobile has recognized the importance and the desire for a strong and competitive prepaid set of service plans for customers, which has led them to this point. As a former customer of one of their regular postpaid plans for the better part of 10 years, moving over to one of their prepaid plans was the best decision I ever made in regards to my wireless service.

Personal feelings aside about the wonders of T-Mobile prepaid, T-mobile’s most recent reported numbers show that they have a whopping 15.64 million prepaid wireless subscribers on their network which is about .45 million more customers more than Sprint on prepaid plans now, as the nations third largest network boasts 15.19 million prepaid subscribers. AT&T holds about 11.34 million prepaid subscribers, and Verizon brings up the rear in this category with 6.04 million. T-Mobile still ranks as the number four network in terms of subscriber numbers as a whole, but ever since John Legere took over the company has been making some much needed changes that have not only shaken up the industry but also the way T-mobile does business and the types of services they offer to customers. Because of these changes, T-Mobile has been rapidly closing the gap between them and their competitors, putting them on a growth path that could lead them to potentially leave the ranking of the fourth largest carrier in the U.S., and their prepaid services have become an important part of that, and may just play the biggest role in getting to that point.

Sam Sung worked at Apple… and he is auctioning his business card

I can’t imagine being an Apple employer and keeping a straight face while hiring a man named Sam Sung. As it turns out, the Cupertino-based company did have a Sam Sung on payroll, a man who ironically shares his name with Apple’s main competitor. He worked as a specialist in a Vancouver store, which earned him the right for his very own business cards.

An image of his business card was found to be quite comic by the tech community. It went viral, but he had very little to say about the matter, as Apple’s policies wouldn’t allow him to comment much on the case. He is no longer working for Apple and has a single business card left. What to do with this one-of-a-kind piece of paper?

Would you be willing to pay a significant amount of cash for Sam Sung’s business card? You can go place your bids on his auction! Sung has framed his business card, along with his company t-shirt and the official Apple Store lanyard. He then autographed the shirt and started the bids at just $0.99, a steal for any technology enthusiast.

The number quickly grew to substantial amounts of cash, though. Over 70 bids later, the auction now stands at $2,550 USD. That is a very high price for merchandise that probably costed apple a few dollars, but Sam Sung is hoping a tech collector “with a good sense of humor” may appreciate it.

The framed contents do come with a very rewarding sentiment, after all. Sam has honorably decided donate all proceeds to the Children’s Wish foundation, an organization that grants wishes to sick children. Sung has pledged to post a picture of Jennifer Peterson (the foundation’s director) as soon as the auction concludes.

Unlike most of us here, Sam does state he has no hard feelings for Apple, something Samsung also wouldn’t agree with. He just found this to be a great opportunity to help a good cause.

T-Mobile Is Now The US's No. 1 Prepaid Provider, Surpassing Sprint (If You Count MetroPCS)

T-Mobile, hot on the heels of rejecting a $15 billion buyout from Iliad and an apparently abandoned takeover by Sprint, has announced today that it's now the US's #1 prepaid wireless provider by subscriber volume.

The exact number of prepaid subscribers T-Mobile cites is 15.64 million, about half a million above former #1 Sprint's 15.19 million. Sprint, of course, operates two major American prepaids - Virgin Mobile and Boost. AT&T and Verizon lag behind at 11.34 million and 6.04 million prepaid subscribers, respectively.
