Google launches standalone Docs, Sheets, and Slides apps for Android

google docs apps nexus 7

Google is unbundling its Drive productivity app, with new dedicated apps launching today that will let you edit and view documents, spreadsheets, and presentations even when you are not online.

The new Docs and Sheets are now available in the Play Store (as well as on the App Store for iOS users), while Slides is said to be coming soon.

Google’s justification for releasing these standalone apps is to “make it easier for you to quickly find, edit and create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on the go”. If you choose not to install the apps, you will be prompted to do so over the following days, when you open a file in Drive. You’ll still be able to view and organize documents through Drive, just like before.

Overall, functionality seems to remain the same in the new apps, compared to Drive. The biggest difference is that you get a list of recently accessed docs/sheets/slides on the app’s default screen, which is nice for getting around large number of files. The top bar is colored (a growing trend with Google’s apps) and the side menu contains a convenient link to Drive. The apps work offline, so connectivity issues won’t hinder your creative impulses.

Go check out the new apps in the Play Store: Docs and Sheets, with Slides to follow soon.

LG G Watch reportedly to be priced at €199, coming this summer

lg g watch black gold

Earlier this month a report surfaced claiming that the LG G Watch will make its way to the United Kingdom no later than July with a price of £180. Now French Site Les Numeriques claims that LG France has confirmed that the device will arrive sometime in “summer” and will cost €199.

While this information supposedly comes from LG France, we imagine that the price point will pretty much be universal throughout most of Europe. Interestingly enough, however, €199 is actually less than the UK’s asking price — which would come to about €218.67. For now we’d take all the pricing details with a grain of salt, though if these reports are true, we’d imagine that the North American cost for the G Watch will be well under $250.

As for what the LG G Watch brings to the table? While we don’t know a lot of specifics just yet, the watch packs a 280 x 280 pixel display and is rumored to offer 512MB RAM with 4GB internal storage. At the device’s heart is the Android Wear platform, which essentially brings a Google Now experience right to our wrists.

Over the last year, we’ve seen several manufacturers push the idea of wearable devices with varying degrees of success. Right now it remains unseen whether Android Wear has what it takes to truly take wearables mainstream, though we like what we see so far.

What do you think of the LG G Watch, interested or more intrigued by the Moto 360?

from Android Authority http://ift.tt/1rORzV5

Two things Android Wear needs to be successful

The buzz generated by the dawning age of wearable technology has been growing steadily louder. CES and MWC kicked off the year with a flurry of fitness trackers, smartwatches, and other wearables. You’ll be hard pressed to find a major OEM that isn’t planning to release some form of wearable technology this year, and a few already have.

Right now it’s a very messy space with multiple platforms and a palpable lack of killer apps. Enter Google on March 18 with “a project that extends Android to wearables”. The new Android Wear program is an important move and it was quickly followed up by announcements from Motorola and LG about forthcoming smartwatches, the Moto 360 and the LG G Watch.

LG G Watch Tweet

What is Android Wear?

As more Android Wear details emerged it became clear that this is an extension of the Android platform. Trying to cram the full-fat version of Android onto a wristwatch is never going to be efficient (although there are developers doing just that, the Omate TrueSmart and the Neptune Pine).

Android Wear strips away the complexity to create a notification based system that delivers potentially important data to your wrist and employs Google Now to enable you to use voice commands. It has to be paired with an Android smartphone or tablet for you to take full advantage because there are no standalone apps running on the wearable device itself.

The concept video shows off a range of use cases, such as someone replying to a text by dictating a message, being notified when a taxi will arrive, displaying the boarding pass QR code for a flight, asking for the latest score in a game, getting a weather warning, seeing a time estimate for the commute, getting an update on calories burned, recognizing a song, and remotely opening a garage door.

In terms of advantages over your current situation, we can reduce all of these examples down to one thing – you no longer have to take your smartphone out of your pocket. In fact your smartphone is still doing all the heavy lifting. Your Android Wear device is just an extension of it. That’s not to say it’s not a good idea, but for major success it’s going to need to do more.

Developing a killer app

If you want to look at the wearable technology scene as a race for domination, then Google’s release of the Android Wear SDK could establish an early lead. The attraction of developing for a platform that will land on multiple devices from OEMs big and small is obvious. This could lead to some real innovation and that’s one thing smartwatches and other wearables really need to attract consumers. If someone can come up with a killer app that does more than extend your smartphone functionality to your wrist then it could really help to drive sales.

It’s worth stopping to ask whether wearables are really all about features. There is another factor here that could be even more important than functionality. For someone like me, who hasn’t worn a watch for nearly two decades it would take something special to tempt me in, but smartwatches have another market to go after.

samsung galaxy gear aa 16

Style over substance

According to a report from the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry there were around 1.2 billion timepieces sold in 2013. The wristwatch industry hit a low point in 2009 and has actually been growing since then. The biggest watch group in the world, Swatch reported sales worth $9.3 billion last year with an operating profit of $2.1 billion.

The fact that more wristwatches were sold worldwide last year than smartphones shows the size of the opportunity. Obviously a good proportion of those watches will have been cheap, but 28.1 million of them came from Switzerland at an average value of $791.

People are not buying these watches primarily for their functionality; they are buying them for fashion and status. If the smartwatch market can tap into that, then sales could really take off, but are the big Android OEMs capable of producing stylish devices?

Tech and fashion

They can be uneasy bedfellows. When Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Gear, fashion was clearly not the focus. The 10 year-old me would have been excited, because it looks like a spy gadget from the eighties. The biggest boost that the Android Wear program could have received came in the shape of the Moto 360, because it clearly has one eye on classic design that’s desirable to wear.

Moto360__Metal_RGB

For Android Wear to succeed on a large scale it needs fashionable hardware. This isn’t necessary going to come from the existing Android OEMs, although Motorola does give hope. What’s to stop the Swatch group and other watch manufacturers from hopping onboard? They don’t need to design a platform or apps; they can just focus on bringing their wristwatch fashion know-how to bear.

Oakley are already doing this in the smart glasses space and it’s not like these fashion brands would have to do it for themselves, surely we’ll see some deals being struck. What’s to stop Tag Heuer, Rolex, Chanel, or Cartier from teaming up with an electronics manufacturer? Trendy devices running Android Wear would definitely sell, there’s a proven market there already.

Fitness trackers leading the way

There are a couple of reasons that fitness trackers are leading the wearables market.

Firstly, they offer functionality that’s useful in a better format than your smartphone. You can wear a lightweight device that’s unobtrusive enough for you to forget you’re wearing it and track all your activity. It’s also better at tracking that activity than your smartphone is because you wear it.

Secondly, the relatively basic requirements and lack of restrictions about how they are worn offer opportunities for manufacturers to come up with stylish and desirable designs that don’t look like electronics. The Misfit Shine is a good example of this.

Misfit_Shine

The right mix

Elements like battery life and price point are obviously going to weigh in heavily here, but we can expect rapid improvements in both areas if the market takes off. Ultimately the success of Google’s Android Wear is not entirely in its hands, just as the success of the Android platform wasn’t.

For it to claim a strong lead and create a new market, or break into the existing wristwatch market, it requires developers to create great killer apps and manufacturers to build sexy devices that people actually want to wear.

Motorola is holding 24 hour sale on May 1st, grab a Moto X for just $299.99

The Moto X was one of our favourite handsets when it first launched last year, and we’re still enamored with it now. If you’ve been waiting for an opportunity to get your hands on the Moto X, you will be hard pressed to find a better date than tomorrow, Thursday May 1st.

Motorola will be running a 24 hour promotion on the Moto X, cutting at least $50.00 off the price of the handset. The sale will start tomorrow at 12:01am ET and will end at the following midnight.

The deal is coming directly from Motorola and will not apply to any contract offers, but the sale will cut the price of the 16GB Moto X to $299.99 (regular price $349.99), the 32GB will start at $324.99 (regular price $399.99), and the Developer Edition receives the biggest price cut down to $324.99 (regular price $449.99). The offer still allows you to customize your handset with the full range of case and color options, at the usual extra costs.

If you’re in need of a recap about everything the Moto X has to offer, check out our range of video coverage below.

Spotify for Android gets a new look, adds a few other changes

spotify-redesign

Earlier this month the web, desktop and iOS versions of Spotify saw a redesign that featured a darker theme and a simpler interface. At the time, Android users were left out of the dark (see what I did there?), but no longer.

As of today, the new Spotify experience is rolling out to Android users. That said, this is a staged rollout and may take a few weeks to reach everyone. For those that don’t wish to wait any longer than they have to, Spotify is offering the APK directly from their website.

So what exactly is new here, aside from a redesigned look? Probably the biggest change outside of the new design language is the addition of “Your Music”, which replaces “Collections”. This is more than just a name change, as the new music section allows you to directly save albums to your music list, something you previously couldn’t do.

There’s also improvements to the “Browse” feature, offering better, more relevant content according to Spotify. This change includes a new “Genres & Moods” section that has things like mood, party, pop, workout and several other categories.

Overall, Spotify feels less cluttered and easier to use then before. Of course it also is a bit of an adjustment for regular Spotify users. To check out the app update for yourself, you can either grab it via Spotify’s website or through Google Play. What do you think of the new look? Like it, or do you prefer the original UI?

Sony Z Ultra Play edition is now $449 in the Play Store, $200 off

sony Z Ultra xperia Google Play edition GPe (5)

Looking for a nice deal to lighten up your mood after news broke that the Nexus line is on its way out? Look no further, as Sony’s mighty Z Ultra Google Play edition is now on sale for just $449.

Normally going for $649, the half tablet/half smartphone device from Sony features a beautiful 6.4-inch Full HD LCD display, a Snapdragon 800 SoC, and two gigs of RAM. If the 16GB of storage onboard isn’t enough, the microSD card slot will surely come in handy. Filling up the spec sheet are the 3,000 mAh battery and 8MP rear camera, though sadly there’s no flash.

The Z Ultra Play edition is also waterproof, though that doesn’t show on its girth, at just 6.5 millimeters across. Overall, the device looks like a great choice for anyone pining for a large smartphone or a compact tablet.

As with any Play edition device, you get the guarantee that updates will come to its stock Android OS in a timely manner.

The deal only seems to be available in the United States for now. Check it out here. No indication if this is a permanent price cut or a temporary sale.

Paranoid Android 4.3 beta 1 brings Hover, and it looks very promising

Paranoid Android's Hover - Hands On - YouTube 07 001352

Back in early March, the Paranoid Android team announced that Halo, the signature multitasking feature of the custom ROM, would be reinvented into a new feature called Hover. Now the latest beta release of PA brings the initial release of Hover, and it looks very promising.

Now available in Paranoid Android 4.3 beta 1, Hover gives you a way to quickly interact with your notifications without leaving your current app.

Let’s say, for instance, you receive an email while watching YouTube. Hover will show a sliding notification card at the top of the screen for about three seconds. If you want to see more, you can swipe down on the notification to expand it with a bit more info, or, you can tap it to open Gmail in a window that floats on top of YouTube, hence the name Hover. YouTube stays open, so you won’t need to pause it or close it to read your message.

To activate Hover, you need to slide down the notification bar and tap on the Hover button near the Settings shortcut. From there, the feature takes over all your notifications.

Hover looks like a very promising feature that will really set PA apart from stock Android and other custom ROMs. The ability to open up background apps without leaving whatever you happen to be doing can greatly improve multitasking on mobile devices. And that’s especially useful when playing full screen games, like demonstrated with Temple Run in the video below.

The feature already looks pretty solid, but the Paranoid Android team promises it’s only the “first step” towards adding more functionality to the ROM’s notification system. Of course, as with any initial release, some bugs and inconsistencies are to be expected.

Besides Hover, other features and changes in the release include the ability to pause and resume downloads and to open the last used app by long-pressing the recent apps button. There are also some tweaks and bug fixes, that you can learn about here.

Paranoid Android 4.3 beta 1 is currently available for modern Nexus devices from the official downloads page.

FacesIn – Indie app of the day

So what is FacesIn?

FacesIn is a social network location aggregation service of sorts. What that means is that it allows you to log in to a number of social networks and then allows you to use your location and the location of your friends to help facilitate meetings. In other words, it’s an application that tells you when your friends are nearby using their location that they send out to various social media sites.

Here’s how it works. You open the app and immediately you’re given a selection of social networks. You can log into just one or all of them if you so choose. Currently the selections are LinkedIn, Facebook, Foursquare, and Instagram although we’ve been told that more will be added eventually. You can also log into MeetUp and Twitter from your profile page after you log in. Once you’re logged in the app will gather the data it needs. From there, you can check out your friends’ check ins, view a map showing your friends’ latest check ins, nearby places where you can check in, and a settings menu.

Once you’re all set up, the only thing you really have to do is wait. When a friend checks in somewhere close to you, you’ll get a notification letting you know that someone is nearby. This is cool for a few reasons. If someone you haven’t seen for a while is nearby you can go say hello or join them (if they prefer) and vice versa. It can be used for spontaneous meet ups with friends or colleagues. In the settings, you can also customize your notifications. You can turn them on or off or assign a quiet period where the app doesn’t notify you. There is also Pebble support.

That’s really it folks. It’s a very simple application that can bring you and the people you know closer together on the fly. You can also use this instead of apps like Foursquare to check into places which is a nice touch. The design is very attractive and follows the Android design guidelines. There are even parts of the app that use cards like Google Now, which we also thought was a nice touch.

FacesIn review

What’s wrong with this app?

In terms of functionality, this is a very clean application so you won’t run into too many bugs. If you sign into every social network, the first load will take a pretty long time but the app loads at nominal speeds afterward. There is no Google+ support but we have it on good authority that the developers are working on that. The only other issues people have are little things here and there. For instance, people who have the same contact across multiple networks can’t merge them into a single contact on FacesIn. So far, the development team has communicated very well with issues their users are having and that’s always a good thing.

We know some people might be concerned about the privacy of this application. However, believe it or not, privacy is not a big deal here. If you don’t want people to know where you are, you simply do not check in anywhere and you won’t show up on FacesIn. So participation is, in fact, optional if you use FacesIn and we liked that.

FacesIn Review

Final thoughts

Overall, FacesIn is a really nice application. Obviously there will be some people who cannot use this app to its fullest potential. If you live in sparsely populated areas or don’t have a lot of friends who use social media check ins, you may not get the full enjoyment. However, if your friends list is active with their check ins then this is app could be a great chance to connect more with the people you care about. It’s free in the Google Play Store and between its great design, clean performance, and active development team, it’s a must have app if you’re a socialite.

It’s also worth mentioning that the developers are throwing a contest to celebrate their launch of FacesIn. They’re giving away a Samsung Galaxy S5, an HTC One M8, and a Nexus 5. The contest is quite easy to join. You simply share the app (from within the app) and get your friends to sign up. You can find the full details for the contest by clicking on this link. The best Android apps of April 2014

April is coming to a close. Spring has officially started -at least in the Northern Hemisphere- and the days are starting to get longer and warmer. We also saw some pretty fantastic Android apps get released to the Google Play Store. As per the norm, you can watch it above or read it below. Here are the best Android apps of April 2014.

best android appsThe Amazing Spider-Man 2

[Price: $4.99 with in app purchases]

First up is The Amazing Spider-Man 2 out of Gameloft. It’s your stereotypical action adventure game that features a super hero. You play as Spiderman as you take on both classic bad guys and new ones. The graphics are pretty good and the game play is enjoyable. However, it does cost $4.99 and also has in app purchases. People have complained about it but if you don’t mind that admittedly greedy monetary tactic, it’s not a half bad game.

baldur's gate android appsBaldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition

[Price: $9.99 with in app purchases]

Baldur’s Gate was one of the classic RPG franchises of the late 90’s and now it’s for Android. It’s a little pricy at $9.99 but I’ve seen a lot of people state that they would fork out good money for console-level games and this is a console level game. It’s been re-imagined for mobile but all of the game mechanics remain pretty much the same. You can relive the classic or get into the franchise for the first time. It does also offer in app purchases but they’re mostly extras that do not affect the game play at all. If you’re an RPG fan, this is worth picking up.

chrome remote desktop android appsChrome Remote Desktop

[Price: Free]

Chrome Remote Desktop is an awesome application if you like to interface with your PC while you’re on your Android device. As the name implies, this app will let you remotely control your desktop from your Android device. You’ll of course need Google Chrome on your computer and need the companion Chrome app in order to make this work but as you can see from the screen shots, it does actually work.

android appsDomo Icon Pack

[Price: $1.99]

Domo Icon Pack hit the Google Play Store and people seem to really enjoy it so far. It’s $1.99 and rocks an impressive 4.8 rating in the Play Store. The Domo Icon Pack features 1700 icons, a cloud-based wallpaper gallery, and the ability to search icons based on category. If you have a custom launcher and you want to try out some awesome icons, these may be for you.

farmville 2 android appsFarmVille 2: Country Escape

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

Farmville 2: Country Escape was released worldwide on Android this last month. Much like the Facebook game, the Android game has drawn either supreme enjoyment or complete hatred and that’s cool. Games with this level of social integration tend to make people angry when they get unwanted invites from them all day long. That said, the game is your essential Farmville experience. You grow things, craft things, expand your farm, and you can even transport goods back and forth to the Facebook version. Also, it’s free.

google camera android appsGoogle Camera

[Price: Free]

Google added a new member of their Google apps to the Play Store this month and it was Google Camera. The simplistic camera hit the Play Store to almost unanimous critical acclaim. The Blur Mode has been touted as awesome and people who have devices running 4.4 and up can enjoy popular photo styles like Photosphere and Panorama. It is a little simplistic and some may not like it, but as Google fanatics will no doubt point out, simplicity is kind of the point. It’s free in the Play Store if you want to check it out.

IFTTT android appsIFTTT (If This Then That)

[Price: Free]

IFTTT, or If This Then That, is an application that allows you to create connections using simple If-Then statements. Here’s an example of how this works. You can create a function that states that if you favorite something on Instagram, then that image would be saved on Google Drive. The sky is practically the limit with this app and it comes with support for most of the most popular applications. This is a great app for pretty much everyone and you should check it out.

best android appsImpossible Road

[Price: $1.99]

Impossible Road is a minimalist arcade game. How minimalist? The background is white and I actually didn’t like that much the game itself is fairly fun. You control a ball as it races down a road and you have the option of jumping off of the road at any point to try to land on the road further down. It’s $1.99 and it has a 4.3 rating in the Google Play Store. Most of the complaints mirror my own in that the game’s graphics are a tad too simple but the game itself is fun and really that’s all that matters.

best android appsNitro Nation

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

Next up is Nitro Nation, a drag racing game that is a lot like the game Drag Racing or CSR Racing. It features phenomenal graphics and a fairly easy game play system. Plenty of people have complained about the in-game money mechanics as well as the horse power mechanics. If you can get passed the bugs which the developers are in the middle of fixing, the game itself can be pretty fun.

best android appsThe Walking Dead: Season One

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

Earlier this month the Walking Dead: Season One game was released on Android. Included are all five of episodes of the game along with the DLC 400 Days. The first episode is free but everything else must be acquired via in-app purchase. Despite that, the game rocks a 4.5 rating in the Play Store. The graphics are phenomenal, the story is good, and the game play is enjoyable. If you’re a Walking Dead fan, this is worth every penny.

best android appsWind-up Knight 2

[Price: Free with in app purchases]

If you’re a fan of Wind-up Knight then Wind-up Knight 2 should be a familiar face. The game features a few of the same ideas as the first one but also includes enhanced graphics, more game play elements, and more. The free version is a demo and the paid version comes in the form of an in-app purchase. A few people have reported some release day bugs and issues here and there but updates are slowly fixing these issues. It’s definitely worth a shot if you’re interested.

best android appsXCOM

[Price: $9.99]

Last on our list this month is XCOM. If the name sounds familiar it’s probably because you remember this as being a classic PC game and one of the best games of 2012. It has now been released on Android in all of its glory and includes most of the things everyone loved about the PC title. The graphics and game play are superb and people seem to be enjoying this title quite a bit. It’s a tad expensive at $9.99 but this is yet another console quality game to be released this month and if you’re into strategic 3rd person shooters, then it’ll be worth every penny.
