DISH Anywhere App Update Includes Multiple User Profiles, 'Hopper Pairing' In Lieu Of Passwords, Bill Pay, And NCAA Tourney Features

dish

DISH Network has updated their official app with a variety of improvements and new features, making it better both as a streaming video player and as an account management console. Probably the best addition in this update is the ability to support multiple profiles for a single subscriber account, a la Netflix. Each profile will have its own favorites list and recommendations, making family sharing a lot smoother.

Also on the streaming side of things, DISH has tried to make following the NCAA men's basketball tournament simpler.

Tag Heuer partnering with Intel and Google for a smartwatch to be announced tomorrow

tag-heuer-tradtional-watch

It was only a matter of time until traditional watchmakers jumped into the smartwatch craze. It appears Tag Heuer will be among the first as they are cooking up something with Intel and Google.

The world watch and jewelry show, Baselworld, kicks off tomorrow in Switzerland, and Tag Heuer is set to announce the new watch around 2:00 pm local time.

It’s expected that Tag Heuer will design the watch case and the crown, but of course, they won’t be able to do the hardware and software. Tag Heuer recognizes that the “craftsmanship” in making a smartwatch is very different than tradtional watches, and that is why they separated the research and development business into two departments.

It will be interesting to see what Tag Heuer comes up with. Will more traditional watch manufacturers follow suit?

Clarity-Lab Is Creating A New Virtual Assistant With Backing From Google

google-now

Virtual assistant software is something that most of us use every day to set reminders or to search for information. All platforms have some sort of version of virtual assistant, such as Google Now’s voice recognition feature, and of course Siri and Cortana from Apple and Microsoft respectively. But there is about to be a new player in the market, one that will be every bit as powerful and even offer some things that the big boys can not offer. To make it all even better, it is open source.

This open source program comes from the folks at the University of Michigan’s Clarity-Lab and it is called Sirius. This open source project has some pretty hefty backers funding it. The most notable would be Google, as well as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency or DARPA, and the National Science Foundation. Currently the project is on GitHub – a collaboration website for developers and coders – and being that it is on GitHub and open source, anyone can contribute to the effort. It will also be pushed out under the BSD license, which means that anyone would be able to use if for free for their projects or to distribute the software. This will allow makers, researchers, developers and even those looking to make a science fair project will be able to utilize Sirius’s capabilities in their projects.

One of the more notable features that Sirius has is the ability to take a shot with your camera, send it over to Sirius, and then you can ask a question about the image. This is something that virtual assistants that are on the market today are incapable of and is certainly a handy new feature. You will not see this on your mobile device as of yet however. Currently, this project is only up and running on Ubuntu Linux desktops. The project is also a patchwork of many different projects, so in order to make this work you would have to download all the other programs from these other projects to get it working at this point. The different programs can all be downloaded via a download suite, which makes things easier. There is also a tutorial on how to get all the programs up and running so that it works as it should. Keep in mind, this project is in the early stages, but hopefully will make its way to mobile devices and other desktops as well. This type of project has been attempted before, with not so great results. Hopefully with such high power backing, this project will gain traction and catch on and become a success.

HTC One M9+ (Plus) to launch late March or early April, no longer exclusive to Asian market [RUMOR]

HTC One M9 Plus leak

We were surprised to find that, during HTC’s big Mobile World Congress reveal, the manufacturer failed to mention anything about the oft rumored HTC One M9 Plus (aka HTC Hima Ultra). This was after the handset had been leaked numerous times, allegedly coming equipped with a MediaTek processor and fancy Samsung-like home button.

For all those anxious to get their hands on the HTC phablet, it seems it wont be much longer. According to @upleaks , he confirmed via his Twitter account today that the phone will allegedly launch towards the end of Q1 (late March), or the beginning of Q2 (early April). What’s more is the official launch name will be the One M9+, not “Plus.”

Rumored HTC One M9+ specs

  • MediaTek MT6795 64-bit octa-core processor

  • 5.2-inch WQHD display

  • 3GB RAM

  • 32GB internal storage

  • Touch based finger print sensor (located on front)

  • Android 5.0.2 with Sense 7.0

  • 20.7MP + 2.1MP rear cameras (Duo Camera)

  • 13MP front facing camera

  • BoomSound

  • Bluetooth 4.1

  • 2,840mAh Battery

Originally, @upleaks mentioned the EMEA/USA version was going to carry a Snapdragon processor, but had been cancelled. While it seems the M9+ is apparently now on for EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa), apparently it will still feature the same MediaTek processor as the Asian variant. Boo.

Google X’s Astro Teller admits that Glass was not ready

google-glass

Prior to the shutdown of the Glass Explorer program, Google X’s Astro Teller explained that wearables are not easy to embed into consumers’ lives. He event hinted that the company shift its focus away from Glass shortly before the shutdown. Now, with the device’s successor looming, Teller has commented on why Glass’ first outing failed.

Teller believes that experiencing failure at the start of a product’s life makes it easier for cleanup than doing so later on. Everything remains cost-efficient and simple to alter. He does note that a “mistake-free learning environment” does not exist anywhere. All companies have to deal with mistakes and challenges with their products.

The biggest issue for Google Glass was consumer perception and launching too quickly. The company wanted to get hardware out to the public when it should have waited a bit longer. And, when people learned about Glass, they become concerned with the device’s privacy. Teller had the following to say about the release of Glass:

“We learned a lot on the technology front. Many things like the battery were big obstacles. [Also] to understand how to talk about these things in the real world and figure out how new social norms could be built.”

Teller admits that the company brought so much attention to the device that it became too much for it. Google wanted “to say to the world this is an early prototype.”

Code found in Android Wear suggests Google is already working on iOS compatibility

Moto 360 DSC06955

Despite a plethora of beautiful designs, varying hardware, and affordable price points, Android Wear smartwatches haven’t exactly been flying off the shelves. Last month we told you that only 720,000 had shipped in all of 2014, a number that doesn’t even account for actual sales. Meanwhile, the platform-agnostic Pebble smartwatch along celebrated its millionth unit sold, topping over $18 million in pre-orders on their Kickstarter page for the sequel, Pebble Time.

While tough to say for certain the reason behind Pebble’s success, the fact that the Pebble is fully compatible with both Android and iOS certainly didn’t hurt. This is the one area that, we feel, has been holding Android Wear smartwatches back. iOS simply holds too big a piece of the mobile market to ignore and it’s a reason Google has made it a major focus on bringing their own apps and services to the platform. Hell, even Google Glass was compatible with iOS.

Taking a page out of Pebble’s handbook, it appears Google could finally be wising up with newly discovered code found inside the Android Wear OS that seemingly hints at iOS compatibility sometime in the future. Android developer MohammadAG tweeted the findings on Twitter, confirming rumors that Google was, in fact, already working on it.

Of course, there’s no telling how long an endeavor like this could take, or how far along Google has gotten. It’s possible Google could be planning on an announcement for Google I/O, marking almost a full year since for Android Wear was first announced. We just can’t help but wonder why this wasn’t Google’s intention from the start, but it’s possible new APIs in iOS have only recently made this possible. Platform affiliations aside, iOS compatibility is a smart move if Google hopes to get Android Wear off the ground and in the ring with the overpriced Apple Watch.

HTC Looking Towards Early April For Android 5.1 Update On GPe HTC One M8

HTC One M8

HTC has already started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to its main flagship devices from last year and the year prior, being the HTC One M8 and the HTC One M7, along with the many other OEM’s who are currently in the process of updating devices to the latest version of the Android OS. While some manufacturers are just now beginning to get Lollipop onto their 2014 flagships, like Sony with the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2, HTC is currently testing development of the next version of Lollipop for its GPe version of the HTC One M8.

HTC is targeting an early April release for the Android 5.1 Lollipop software update to hit the Google Play edition of the One M8, which is just a few short weeks away. Customers might be forgiven for being skeptical of the release this quickly given HTC missed their initial 90 day window on updating their regular non-GPe devices to Lollipop, but GPe devices are more or less as close to stock Android on a Nexus device as it gets so the possible time frame isn’t out of reach. Coming from Mo Versi in a tweet earlier this morning in response to a user question, the date of early April is based on internal testing of the software as well as Google QA approval.

It is possible that the update could hit later than they’re shooting for, but users should be hopeful nonetheless. When Android Lollipop was first initially announced and released, HTC’s GPe One M8 and One M7 phones started receiving the updates around the beginning of December, so the wait wasn’t long after the software was made official. Android 5.1 Lollipop was just officially announced by Google a few weeks ago, so if the update to 5.1 for HTC’s GPE One M8 does hit on schedule, that puts users at a waiting period of about a month and a half, which is close to the same time frame as it was for Android 5.0.1. If you use an HTC One M8 GPe model, keep an eye out for the updated software package to hit your device within the next few weeks, which is also close to the time that HTC is rumored to be launching their brand new HTC One M9.

Rumor: Tag Heuer Smartwatch Revealed Tomorrow Using Intel And Google Technology

TAG Heuer F1 Watch

Luxury watch maker, Tag Heuer, has been linked with releasing a smartwatch for some time now. It’s now being reported that the Swiss company is set to announce a new smartwatch tomorrow lunchtime at Basel World. The new smartwatch is rumored to be the product of a partnership with Intel and Google; Intel’s hardware combined with Google’s software already sounds like a great product, but throw in Tag Heuer’s iconic design and the resulting smartwatch sounds tantalising! Tag Heuer have already hinted at some news; at a press conference on Tuesday, the company said that it couldn’t provide any news because the Silicon Valley executives hadn’t arrived at the Basel World event, but did say that the announcement was not Apple.

We have also seen comments in interviews, for example Chief Executive Jean-Claude Biver said to Bloomberg with reference to a smartwatch: “we can’t produce the engine, the chips, the applications, the hardware – nobody can produce it in Switzerland. The hardware and the software will come from Silicon Valley. But the watch case, the dial, the design, the idea, the crown, that part of the watch will, of course, be Swiss.” We’ve also seen that Tag Heuer is planning to make an official announcement “by late 2015.” It would seem sensible that any new smartwatch would be announced as close to the Apple Watch event in order to capture customer mindshare. This is an important point because there’s a chance that the Apple Watch could steal market share from the premium Swiss watch market.

Intel has a track record of combining their hardware with expert designers, which is a great way of recognizing that whilst Intel may be expert at building the hardware, they are not a wearable product designer. It is also encouraging to see Google involved; assuming Tag Heuer are using an Android Wear platform, this is a significant vote of confidence.

One of the observations that Huawei made about their new Watch is that they are considering trying to enter the luxury smartphone market, but wanted to use a smartwatch that allows components to be replaced and upgraded so as to avoid a very expensive device quickly becoming obsolete. It’s not clear if a Tag Heuer smartwatch will follow the same ideology and allow customers the chance to easily upgrade the device at some point in the future.

What do you think of the prospect of a beautifully designed Tag Heuer smartwatch, running Android Wear over an Intel platform? Let us know in the comments below.

HTC’s Dot View Case App Gets An Update With A Couple Of Interesting Additions

Dot-View

Manufacturers invest significant sums of money into smartphones, covering all aspects from the internal components such as the processor, memory, camera and networking modules, to the chassis and screen design. The result is often the product of many different teams and has been crafted to look and feel a certain way. It’s such a shame, then, for the customer to buy a $10 case for a $600 smartphone: the cheap case may look and feel as cheap as you might expect, and it may not even offer the sort of protection that a $600 smartphone deserves. For this reason, cases such as the HTC Dot View case design are an interesting idea: here, HTC have injected some of their design DNA into the case and its functionality, which is designed for the HTC One M8 and later, selected, HTC smartphones. Not only does the Dot View case provide a degree of protection for the device, but certain functions still work in the case, which changes the behavior of the device by increasing the screen brightness and displaying content through the screen.

The case allows customers to handle calls and some notifications, providing weather updates and a selectable or customizable theme. HTC released the Dot View case application into the Google Play Store some time ago and it is regularly updated. Today there’s another update, which brings lives themes including a playable Dot Breaker game. Yes, that’s right; you can play a game on your case! The live themes include bright colors streaking across the display, a rocket ship taking off or a scrolling text message similar to the Windows “Marquee” screen saver. All this plus the Dot View case makes the M8 (and later One devices) less slippery in the hand, meaning you’re less likely to drop the device. And should you do, the design should provide the handset with a degree of protection.

If you are using a compatible HTC handset, go ahead and visit the Google Play Store to download the update and let us know what you think. You can also hit up the source below to install from a web browser.

Samsung launches variant of the Galaxy Tab A that has an S Pen

The company also quietly included a variant that features the valuable S Pen for compatibility with the S Note application. The S Pen, which is commonly bundled with Galaxy Note series devices, allows for note-taking, drawing, and other activities common when taking pen to paper. This is the first time that Samsung is bringing the S Pen to more affordable devices.

T1FvdvB7AT1RXrhCrK

We've heard it a handful of times before, but here we are again: some OEM is announcing that it's experimenting with a dual-boot Windows / Android project, or in this case, a project that will allow users to switch their handset from an Android phone to a Windows phone with a simple tool. Microsoft has teamed up with Xiaomi to test this concept on the Mi 4, but mostly as a way to get market feedback on Windows 10 for smartphones in China.
