Samsung’s Latest Video Shows People’s Reactions To Gear VR “Shark Diving” Simulation

AH Samsung Gear VR-7

As we’re waiting for Samsung to unveil their newest flagship at MWC (Mobile World Congress) in Barcelona, the company keeps on releasing all kinds of ads for their existing products along with teasers for the upcoming ones. The company has already advertised their Gear VR headset in all sorts of ways, and now they released yet another ad. This video was posted by Samsung Australia YouTube channel, and it basically shows us the opening of what seems to be a “Shark Diving” store 1,200 kilometers from the nearest ocean. This video vas shot in Alice Springs, Central Australia, and it shows interesting reactions of people as they see the sign in from of the store, and their reactions after using the Gear VR to experience virtual shark diving journey.

If you’re interested in checking out this video, we’ve embedded it for you down below this article, it’s 2:20 minutes long. The footage that the people are watching in this video can also be seen in Sidney and Melbourne, in Samsung’s Experience stores over there. The footage will also be released via Oculus App Store, a place which actually contains all the Gear VR (official) content). Samsung has unveiled the Gear VR back at IFA in Berlin last September, and this headset actually needs the Galaxy Note 4 in order to function, you can’t use it without that phablet. The headset will, however, support some of Samsung’s upcoming devices, like the upcoming flagship(s) (Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge) that is going to be showcased on March 1st in Barcelona.

Samsung has actually developed the Gear VR headset with the help from Oculus, a company which released the Oculus Rift VR headset. That’s it, if you’re interested in checking out this commercial, check out the video down below and let us know if you’ve had the chance to try out Samsung’s virtual reality headset, or perhaps you tried out Oculus Rift VR headset? If not, would you like to try out either of the two products? Let us know what you think in the comments, we’d love to hear from you, as usual.

Google Is Launching YouTube Kids, An App For Family-Friendly Videos, Just For Android Devices On February 23rd

Youtube-Thumb

Google has revealed their intention to roll out a new YouTube app just for kids, starting next week. It will be aptly named YouTube Kids and is geared towards those 10 years old or younger. Perhaps most interesting for non-children is that the app, at least initially, will be released exclusively on Android.

It features a fairly dumbed-down user interface that will leverage Google's voice recognition rather than relying on the spelling abilities of young children.

Google Search displays most relevant content from a single source

google_search_relevant_content_021915

The next time you fire up Google Search on a mobile device, take a good look at the results because there is an interesting addition. In the section at the top where Google houses all of its own aggregated items, a spot for the most relevant content from a single source now appears. So, as seen in the image above, searching “ESPN” will return The Worldwide Leader in Sports’ top stories. It works when searching for sources or topics. The carousel design is used to keep content organized horizontally. Links included are for both articles and videos.

Hit the break to see GIFs of the feature in action.

Kids will have their own YouTube app starting February 23

YouTube_Logo

There is a ton of content for kids on YouTube, but there is only one problem…..There is also a ton of content that isn’t appropriate for kids. To solve this issue, Google will launch a YouTube Kids app on February 23.

YouTube Kids was designed by in-house engineers with parenting credentials along with other third-party testers such as Common Sense Media. It will offer a simpler interface in that viewer comments will be disabled. Parents can even set a timer that will automatically shut down the app at a specified amount of time.

USA Today was able to get a demo of the new app and they report that it will offer large icons to make it easier for kids to find what they are looking for. Tapping on the TV set will get shows like Thomas the Tank Engine and Yo Gabba Gabba, while the radio will offer videos of popular songs. Then there is a lightbulb that represents educational programming like Khan Academy, and binoculars for exploring top videos.

Children will also be able to search for videos by typing or speaking. Of course, your three year old might have trouble doing that, but it’s there for when they get older. The good news is that if they were to search for something like “sex”,. the app will come back with “Try something else.”

For starters, the app will only be available on Android, but it’s a safe assumption that Google will launch it on iOS soon. No word on Chromecast and Android TV compatibility, but I would imagine the app will be compatible with both at launch or very soon after.

T-Mobile’s Legere Makes It Clear T-Mobile Happy To Work With Dish Network In Any Capacity

T-Mobile-Logo-AH-3

T-Mobile’s CEO, John Legere has never been one to shy away from making known his inner thoughts. In fact, generally speaking, Legere is typically quite vocal about what he thinks. Today seems to be no different. After T-Mobile announced their fourth quarter results, Legere went on to describe how he thinks Dish Network would be a great partner for T-Mobile. It is no secret that Dish was one of the big winners from the recent AWS-3 spectrum auction and managed to secure a whole bunch of new spectrum. It is this very spectrum that seems to have attracted Legere’s attention and belief that a partnership between Dish and T-Mobile will be mutually beneficial.

In fact, Legere, not only made it clear his (and presumably T-Mobile’s) intention to forge some sort of spectrum-based relationship between the two, but also made it clear if Dish decided not to work with T-Mobile, it would still be very much in T-Mobile’s benefit. From Legere’s point-of-view, whatever moves Dish makes in respect of their newly found Spectrum, can only further disrupt the market and effectively disrupt Verizon and AT&T’s plans. In this respect, Legere likened Dish’s new-influence, to that of Google and their attempt to become an MVNO. As such, Legere seems to be welcoming any move made by Dish, regardless of whether it directly involves T-Mobile. In Legere’s words “I see no version of what Dish is doing not being a positive for us“.

While it did come as a surprise that Dish secured so many new licences from the spectrum, is seems all bets are off as to what the company will use these spectrums for. It is again, no secret that Dish have been wanting to enter the wireless market for some time. Rewind almost two years and it was Dish who made a $25 billion bid for Sprint. Not to mention, as far back as eighteen months ago they were rumored to be making a bid for T-Mobile. Although, those bids were ultimately unsuccessful, this does highlight Dish’s interest to enter the wireless frame in some capacity. Now, in the form of their newly found spectrum stockpile, they have an even bigger bargaining chip to negotiate with. Either way, we will have to wait and see how Dish responds to Legere’s comments and more importantly, what their next move will actually be. Would you like to see Dish partner with T-Mobile? Let us know your thoughts.

AH Primetime: Sony’s CEO Is Breaking Up The Company For Sale With Sony Mobile Potentially Included

Sony 4

Sony has a few divisions making money, but overall the company isn’t doing so well. This isn’t news to anyone who has been watching the company in the past few years. Sony is taking more drastic measures to try to save their sinking ship. The company announced that they are spinning off their video and audio divisions, turning them into wholly owned subsidiaries of the Sony mothership. They will still own these companies and retain control over them, for now. Last year the company spun off its TV business and got out of the laptop business altogether by selling the VAIO division. It’s looking like Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai is splitting up the company in anticipation of selling at least some of these divisions off.

The Sony CEO has been preaching a message of “One Sony” for years, but in the past 12-18 months he’s been making decisions to set that vision in motion. The next steps could be spinning off their smartphone division and selling their TV division in the same way they offloaded their laptop business. It’s unfortunate that Sony hasn’t figured out how to make money selling smartphones because the Xperia division makes some of the best phones available right now.

This leaves three areas of focus for Sony. The PlayStation business is turning a profit and has beat out the Xbox One in the console wars, but that could change. The PlayStation Vita and PlayStation Mobile pieces aren’t doing so well, but the PS4 console is keeping that division afloat. Sony Pictures Entertainment is the movie-making piece of Sony, and it’s still doing well financially. They did just get hacked and they subsequently fired Amy Pascal after that debacle. The third area where Sony is still making money is with image sensors that it manufactures and sells for use in Apple’s iPhones. Anyone who has used an iPhone to take photos or has used an Xperia device with its 20.7-megapixel camera can attest to the quality of Sony’s image sensors. Sony sensors are used in a ton of devices, not just iPhones, but Apple buys more of them than anyone else right now.

The bottom line is that Sony really isn’t a consumer electronics company anymore. They make a top-selling gaming console, great camera sensors, and they have a hand in making some of the top Hollywood blockbusters every year. Everything else is going by the wayside to create the “One Sony” that Hirai envisions. Gone are the days of the Sony laptop, and it appears that the Sony Walkman and television could be gone soon as well.

HTC teases something “HUGE” as One M9 and M9 Ultra/Plus spotted in new benchmarks

HTC M9 Ultra

We’re less than 2 weeks away from HTC’s big event at Mobile World Congress and according to recent leaks, it’s entirely possible the Taiwanese manufacturer could be unveiling 2 new flagship devices: the HTC One M9 and HTC One M9 Ultra (Ace/Plus). In fact, HTC’s Twitter page began teasing something “HUGE” coming around the bend, no doubt hinting at the larger sized flagship we’ve been hearing about.

HTC One M9 Ultra benchmarks

Today, a pair of devices — model numbers 0PJA13 and 0PK71 — were spotted passing through CompuBench’s benchmarking site, confirming a few of these specs we’ve been hearing so much about. While we know the One M9 falls under the 0PJA model number, this 0PK71 is a little bit more of a mystery.

We can only assume the 0PK71 is the M9 Ultra given its reported resolution (1440p) and a recent tweet from @upleaks revealing a MediaTek CPU equipped variant for South Asia. The only thing not matching up is the 5.1-inch display. While it would be easy to pass this off as simply an error, @upleaks also recently revealed the possibility of an HTC Butterfly 3 coming equipped with a 2K display. So who knows. Here’s the spec sheet as it currently stands:

HTC One M9 (0PJA13)

  • 5-inch 1920 x 1080 display

  • Snapdragon 810 1.9GHz octa-core (4 Cortex A57 cores + 4 Cortex A53 cores)

  • Adreno 430 GPU

  • 2.6GB (3GB) RAM

  • 23GB (32GB) internal storage

  • 19MP (20MP) rear / 12MP (13MP) front cameras with 4K video

HTC One M9 Ultra/Plus/Ace (0PK71)

  • 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 display

  • MediaTek MT6795 1.9GHz octa-core (8 Cortex A53 cores)

  • Rogue PowerVR G6200 GPU

  • 2.6GB (3GB) RAM

  • 23GB (32GB) internal storage

  • 19MP (20MP) rear / 12MP (13MP) front cameras with 4K video

We expect to learn much more during HTC’s March 1st press event in Barcelona. Of course, your friends at Phandroid will be in attendance, bringing you the latest as it unfolds.
