Android Headliner: Why Can’t Verizon have nice Things?

Sony Xperia Z3V AH-20

So this week, we put out our review of the Sony Xperia Z3v. It also went on sale in Verizon stores on Thursday and it’s going for $199 on a new two-year contract. Prior to the review going live, I had spent about a week with the device as my daily driver. Now I’ll preface the rest of this editorial by stating that I have not had hands on a Sony smartphone since the Xperia Z1s on T-Mobile which was back in mid-January. So I have not touched or really seen the Xperia Z2 or Xperia Z3 in person. When I was using the Xperia Z3v, I really liked it. Now I knew it wasn’t a proper Xperia Z3, but it was at least something from Sony here in the US, which is what we’ve been begging for, for years. It was kind of a mix between the Xperia Z3 and the Z2, but branded for Verizon.

So why can’t Verizon have nice things? Well because they have to put their tramp stamp all over their phones. Anyone remember the Galaxy Note 2? With Verizon’s logo on the home button? What about the LG G2 with THREE Verizon logos on board? Or the LG G3 with, again, three logos on it. Yeah Verizon did the same thing with the Xperia Z3v. But there’s only two this time around. There’s one on the front below the front-facing camera and another on the back. Why can’t we just have one logo on the back of the phone? Do we really need that many logos? Typically I don’t complain because we actually use the logos to get macro shots that we use on the site. But you’ve got Sprint that does no branding at all, and then Verizon that over brands. If we could just get something in the middle.

It’s not all about the logos though. Verizon also loaded up the Xperia Z3v with a ton of bloatware. Not that, that should surprise you. But there’s roughly 20 apps from Verizon that are pre-loaded on the Xperia Z3v. That is a major reason why Sony has stayed out of the US. They don’t want to deal with bloatware, and carrier updates, and carrier branding. And I can’t blame them. But at this point, there’s not much of a choice for them, now is there?

While it is nice to see Sony back on Verizon, and I’m excited to see how well the Xperia Z3v does for them, I really wish they’d tone it down. The Xperia Z3v is a beautiful looking device, and it’d look even nicer without the extra logo. And while you do have 32GB of storage plus a microSD card slot, it’d be nice to boot up a brand new phone and not have 75+ apps pre-installed.

Fitbit Surge Appears On Brookstone Pre-Order Webpage; $249 Fitness Orientated Smartwatch

fitbit_surge_use

The wrist-wearable market is hotting up. So far, we’ve seen two main types of device. On one wrist, we have the smartwatch, typically a chunky looking wristwatch with what I’m going to call full blown smartwatch functionality. That means notifications, perhaps voice operation and the ability to control the smartphone that it’s connected to. On the other wrist, we have the band-style unit, typically a fitness or activity logger. We’ve already seen some devices attempt to combine the two – a smartband with limited smartwatch offerings being the usual result. I don’t see anything Apple have produced is going to shake up the market one bit, instead I think it more likely that some of Intel’s products will cause more of a stir such as their smart bracelet. But I am intrigued by some of the cross-pollenation we’re seeing and today I’m going to discuss the Fitbit Surge, which is another hybrid product that’s somewhere between a full blown smartwatch and an activity band unit.

The Brookstone website briefly posted up the pre-order page for this device, although at the time of writing it’s since been removed. It looks as though Fitbit Surge is primarily for the fitness crowd, a more premium product compared with Fitbit’s Flex activity tracker perhaps and it has an expected price tag of $249. It will have some limited smartwatch functionality; call and text notifications being the main areas, plus a means of controlling your device’s music. But most of the Surge’s features are biased towards activity monitoring. It’ll include built-in GPS tracking and the software will provide you with pace, routes, distance and elevation climbed without needing your smartphone with you. The Surge has a built-in heart rate monitor and eight sensors designed to measure activity. As with Fitbit’s other products, the device can monitor sleep and includes statistical analysis to help you set and achieve goals using different types of exercise. That’s a touchscreen you can see on the device. Fitbit state that the device is compatible with the iPhone 4S and later, plus “all leading Android devices.” It’ll work with their Aria WiFi scale and it’s going to be water resistant, too. There’s no word on battery life or availability, but given that the pre-order page was up, we can expect the Surge to be out very soon.

Like I’ve said, the Fitbit Surge slots in between a full blown smartwatch and an activity logger, but it’s closer to a smartwatch. It’s priced alongside Android Wear devices, so it’ll be interesting to see how well the Surge sells (and how long the battery lasts, because surely GPS will chew battery quickly?). What do you think? Do you like the look of it, or do you think it’s too much for too little a product? Hit us up in the comments below.

Google Nexus 6 Passes Through the FCC, Finally

AH Nexus 6 Lollipop

It looks like Google tried to keep the leaks down this year by not pushing their new Nexus hardware through the FCC until after it was announced. But obviously that didn’t work. But the Nexus Player passed through the FCC last weekend, and now we’re looking at the Nexus 6 passing through the FCC today, ahead of it’s October 29th pre-order date. There’s really not much else to say, but we’re definitely excited to get our pre-orders on, starting October 29th. Even though it’s a $650 smartphone, it definitely is a high-end device, compared to the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. Now that LG’s Nexus’ were bad or anything. They just had to skimp in some areas to get a Nexus for under $350.

The Nexus 6 from Motorola has a 5.9-inch 2560×1440 resolution AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB or 64GB of storage, 3220mAh battery inside, with a 13MP camera on the back. Doing some detective work, it’s actually the same sensor that’s in the OnePlus One, which takes some pretty amazing pictures, actually. Of course, it’s running Android 5.0 – Lollipop. Which was announced just last week. The OTA hasn’t started hitting yet, but we should see that on November 3rd, so just over a week away.

Unlike previous Nexus devices, this one is huge. And Google is also going to continue selling the Nexus 5 alongside it. Which is great because not everyone wants a 5.9-inch smartphone and not everyone wants to pay nearly $700 for a new smartphone, or sign a contract to get one from a carrier. Pre-orders start this week, so how many of you are planning on getting your pre-order in? I know I’ll be getting mine in there, as soon as possible. If you are pre-ordering, let us know which capacity and color you’re planning on getting. Be sure to let us know in the comments below.

Amazon makes appstore for Android obsolete

Amazon-Fire-Phone-AH-Headliner (1)

Amazon has always had its own App Store for Android, but to get it, you had to go jump through some hoops, which involved making sure that your device would allow apps outside of the Google Play Store to be installed on your device (which can be done by going to your device’s security settings), heading over to Amazon, downloading the app, and installing it, all before you could download apps from the store itself. The reason for this is because the app has been banned from the Google Play Store as it offers an alternative to Google’s own app store, so of course Google didn’t want to make it easier for users to seek out new alternatives.

However, it has been recently discovered that Amazon has made their App Store obsolete by packaging the functionality of it into their main Amazon app. Six weeks ago, the company released an update to their Amazon app which included the ability to stream Prime Video from your device. Amazon was quite vocal about this but didn’t tell us that it had also included an app store in the app itself.

This feature has flown under the radar for those six weeks but has come to light now, as users have begun to discover that there is an option for downloading apps and games from the main Amazon app in the slide-in navigation drawer to the left of the app. However, though this makes it easier for people to have the app store on their devices, users will still have to make sure that their devices are set to install apps outside of the Google Play Store.

What this essentially means is that Amazon sneaked in a complete app store under Google’s nose. The main Amazon shopping app has been downloaded 50 – 100 million times, according to the Google Play Store itself, which means that Amazon may just have gained a lot more users than it had before. Now that this information is out, it’ll be interesting to see whether or not Google will take steps towards banning this or not.

Download the Amazon app from the Google Play Store now, if you haven’t already.

AH HP Chrome Chromebook 14-3hrome

This is for the 4GB of RAM model which makes it a really amazing deal. Also there’s 4G LTE in here, so that you can get free LTE for life from T-Mobile. It’s only 200MB, but considering it’s free, it’s hard to pass that up. You can grab one from the link down below.

Samsung Galaxy Alpha A3 Passed Through FCC Certification

SAMSUNG-LOGO-AH-3

We’ve already seen that the Samsung Galaxy Alpha A3 has been through the Chinese TENAA certification process and today’s news is that it’s visited the FCC, giving us another look at the specification of the device. From what we understand, the Galaxy A3 is the entry level device in Samsung’s three aluminium-framed smartphones, which also includes the A5 and A7. And as with the other Alpha branded products, the A3 is on the face of it more about design and ease of use than it is about bleeding edge specification. The Galaxy A3 is based around a 4.5-inch screen with a resolution of 960 by 540 pixels, also known as qHD (not to be confused with QHD, which we find on the Nexus 6). Samsung have given the A3 the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, which is a 1.2 GHz quad core 64-bit processor. It’s paired up with 1 GB of RAM and there’s 8 GB of onboard internal storage plus a MicroSD card, which you’re almost certainly going to want to use if you take advantage of the 8 MP rear camera and 5 MP front facing camera. The device runs Android 4.4.4 Kit Kat under the Samsung TouchWiz interface.

Samsung’s decision to use the Snapdragon 410 is a wise one. The 410 is Qualcomm’s entry level 64-bit new generation processor, which promises to be more efficient and more powerful than the outgoing Snapdragon 400. The 400 is the same chipset that powers handsets such as the Moto G or the Lenovo Yoga 10 HD+; it may be a lower powered processor with a lean towards battery efficiency but it’s a true trooper of the recent smartphone industry! The 410 is likely to be somewhere around 33% more powerful running 32-bit code and will sip less battery. The only thing that may hold the A3 back is only having 1 GB of RAM, but I suspect that the device will perform admirably running Android 4.4. I also expect Samsung to release Android 5.0 Lollipop for the A3 (and the entire Galaxy Alpha range) and this should improve things further.

I should also highlight the A3’s small and slim design. It’s only 6.9mm thick (thin?) and weighs just 112 grams. Combine that with the aluminum frame and the Galaxy A3 is going to feel delightful in the hand; I suspect the A3 is going to be a strong seller for Samsung throughout 2015. It’s great to see Samsung chasing design rather than raw specification and I’m looking forward to handling the A3 when it’s released in the UK.

Meizu Sales Increase Manifold After The MX4 Tastes Success

Meizu-MX4-03 Meizu has traditionally been a company that doesn’t believe in competition; it goes about its own thing without taking into consideration the surrounding market. This ploy may have worked for the Chinese company for the first few years, but with more and more companies offering phones at subsidized prices, Meizu’s sales took a beating. Then Meizu re-thought its plans, chalked out a solid scheme to push their latest — the Meizu MX4 — at a price lower than any other Meizu smartphone at launch at just 1799 Yuan (US$290).

Along with making its latest phone more affordable, Meizu also took efforts to make it available to a larger section of the audience; the MX4 is the first Meizu phone to be made available to international buyers. Although sales are carried out only online, which means you can’t buy yourself a spanking new MX4 from the store down the street. they have played a crucial part in increasing Meizu’s brand awareness. We too spent some quality hands on time with the device, which you can read about here.

A report from China has just come in, which points to the quantitative success Meizu has managed. The company has been selling a massive 600,000 smartphones a month, which is quite a number especially when you consider that it hardly sold that many phones prior to the Meizu MX4. The report also claims that Meizu is looking at sales numbers of 2 million units per month for the coming months, which only goes to show how focused Meizu it at expanding its business.

The MX4 was launched last month with a 5.4-inch 1080p display, a MediaTek MT6595 CPU (it is the first phone to ship with the SoC), 2 GB of RAM, 16 / 32 / 64 GB of storage, a 20.7 MP rear camera, a 2 MP front camera and a 3100 mAh battery. There’s at least one more variant of the MX4 in the pipeline, the MX4 Pro. As you would guess from the name, this one’s supposed to be a notch over the MX4 with a more powerful CPU, a fingerprint reader, and more. Meizu are also said to be working on a 1000 Yuan (US$160) phone, most likely to compete with the Hongmi series of Xiaomi.

Motorola Droid Turbo Retail Packaging Surfaces on Twitter

Screen Shot 2014-10-25 at 10.44.02 AM

In just a few days we’ll know all about the Motorola Droid Turbo. As Verizon is holding their DROID Event on Tuesday in New York City. And we’ll be there to check it out in person. But that hasn’t stopped the leaks of this beast. We’ve been seeing some pretty big leaks in the past few weeks for the Motorola Droid Turbo, and that includes seeing the full specs leak out a couple weeks ago. Spec-wise the DROID Turbo is going to be sporting a 5.2-inch 2560×1440 resolution IPS display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, 3900mAh battery and running Android 4.4.4. Although there have been some rumors of it running on Android 5.0 Lollipop. We’ll have to wait and see what Motorola and Verizon tell us on Tuesday. Or rather show us.

Either way, we’ve got pictures of the retail packaging here. And you’ll notice the familiar DROID packaging. So nothing too special here. You’ll also see that it does have that chin that most recent DROIDs have had, as well as the capacitive buttons. Now I’m not a big fan of capacitive, but it can’t be too bad, and obviously a lot of people are fans of it. You’ll also see that it is a kevlar back. Which, from the past few DROIDs from Motorola, it feels great in the hand. Not as great as leather but pretty damn good nonetheless. You can also see that the package says it comes with the Turbo charger, and you can also see the Turbo charger in the box. So it’s great to see that packaged in with the DROID Turbo. Hence the name. The Turbo Charger is also in the box with the Nexus 6.

So that’s the retail packaging of the DROID Turbo. We’ll know all the details come Tuesday. How many of you are excited to see what Verizon has for us?

HTC Desire 816G Is Now Available In China For 1,699 Yuan ($278)

htc_desire_816g

HTC managed to turn profit in Q3 this year mainly thanks to cutting costs. The company is not selling enough devices and they’re trying to change that. HTC is restructuring the company to some extent and we can see that by the amount of devices they’re pushing out lately as well as the type of those devices. We’ve seen some unorthodox moves by HTC lately, they launched HTC Desire Eye which sports two 13-megapixel cameras, one on the front and one on the back. RE Camera is especially odd choice by HTC, but that only shows the new direction this company is taking I guess. HTC is trying to differentiate and next to doing that they’re pushing tons of “regular” devices to the market these days.

You might recall that HTC announced the Desire 820, Desire 820q and Desire 816G in India last month. Well, the latter one of the three is now available in China as well. The device is available at Suning Tesco for 1,699 Yuan ($278). HTC Desire 816G features a 5.5-inch 720p (1280 x 720) display along with 1GB of RAM for your multitasking needs and 8GB of expandable internal storage. Desire 816G is powered by MediaTek’s quad-core processor clocked at 1.3GHz. On the back of this device, you’ll find a 13-megapixel shooter flanked by an LED flash while there’s a 5-megapixel snapper located on the front of the device. This is not an LTE device though, keep that in mind, unlike the original Desire 816.

HTC sure is announcing tons of devices lately and is starting to make more and more low-mid range devices to sell in Asia and India. Do you think HTC is moving in the right direction as a company? Could this change in strategy actually turn around the company and make them turn profit quarter after quarter in order to get some stability? Anyhow, for those of you who live in China, you can get the Desire 816G for 1,699 Yuan, though I’d still argue its price is still way too high considering its specifications. In my humble opinion, HTC is facing the same problems as Sony is, they just can’t seem to price their devices properly. Sony also releases low-mid range devices and attach a rather non-realistic price tag to them.

Ride Sharing App Uber Offers Free Rides In Toronto On Election Day

AH Uber App 1.0 Rarely has a civic election made international headlines, but the mayoral contest in Toronto has been front page news all over the world for several months. This is, of course, due to Toronto’s larger than life mayor Rob Ford and his alleged drug use and fondness for nefarious language during several occasions both public and private. Drug use and racial slurs aside, the story of Rob Ford got even more intense when, earlier this year, he was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and his brother Doug decided to take his place in the election. Torontonians head to the polls this upcoming Monday and people all over the world will undoubtedly be interested in the results of this election. It makes a lot of sense then that the people who run the ride-sharing app Uber would take advantage of the attention surrounding the city’s mayoral race to promote their UberX service.

Uber is offering a promotion for its UberX users in Toronto that will give them free rides to and from polling stations on Election Day, between the hours of 9:00am and 9:00pm, so that they can cast their ballot in this highly contested race. Uber users who would like to take advantage of this offer must enter the code POLLSTORONTO into their account before ordering their ride. This is a pretty smart PR move on Uber’s part as the service needs all the goodwill in Canada that it can get.

UberX first launched in Canada just this past September when it started offering service in Toronto. Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, was not far behind Toronto as UberX launched there this month. Word on the street is that Calgary is the next Canadian city in line to be a part of the UberX family but, in spite of its rapid expansion in Canada, Uber still faces many hurdles before it receives a whole-hearted welcome from many Canadian officials. Toronto City Council has questioned the safety of the service and the Insurance Bureau of Canada has warned potential Uber drivers that they have many concerns related to liability and coverage if there was an accident during an Uber ride. These are some pretty significant setbacks for the people at Uber who, for the most part, have been riding a wave of good PR and increased notoriety since their launch in 2010. Speaking of good PR, if they want to reverse their fortunes in Canada’s largest city then giving away free services is certainly a good place to start.

On Rogers And Having Problems Activating Your Note 4? You’re Not Alone

AH Galaxy Note 4-0 It appears that a lot of Rogers customers are up in arms on Twitter today, and for good reason. Rogers customers who had pre-ordered their Note 4 were supposed to be able to get the device and get it activated on Rogers’ network today, unfortunately it seems that’s not the case. Rogers is having quite a bit of trouble getting the Note 4’s activated on their network which means no Note 4’s for paying customers today like they were promised.

This may not seem like a big deal but if you pre-order and pay for a device then you definitely have a reason to feel entitled to have the device activated when you receive it. Rogers has told Mobile Syrup the following, “We apologize to any of our customers who are unable to get their Samsung Galaxy Note 4 today. We’re experiencing technical issues processing hardware upgrades for the Note 4 and will have this resolved by tomorrow – the issue doesn’t affect new customers.” So new customers should still be able to get their shiny new Note 4’s today, existing customers are not so lucky. You guys will apparently have to wait until sometime tomorrow before you are able to get your Note 4’s activated, a real shame.

Situations like this seem to happen every once and a while with the carriers so don’t take it personally Rogers customers, most of us have been there. Carriers are actually quite notorious for messing things like this up, people getting pre-ordered devices weeks after regular folks got theirs, devices being ordered and later finding out the carrier cancelled the order, just all sorts of inconvenient things. Needless to say, customers always deserve some small compensation in these cases. We at Android Headlines really hope that Rogers steps up to the plate and gives Note 4 owners some sort of compensation for not getting their devices when they were promised they would. Even something as simple as a $5 Google Play Store credit can satisfy a disgruntled customer. Either way, if Rogers speaks publicly about the situation at any point in the near future, we will let you know what they said and what it means for you as a Rogers subscriber.

Google Executive Alludes To Android Wear For iOS

android-wear-check-1 Right now Android Wear devices are only compatible with, you guessed it, Android devices, this is because the Android Wear companion app is only available on Android. Now it looks like that compatibility might be spreading to iOS as well. This comes from Jeff Chang, the Android Wear product manager who says that the Android Wear team has not written off the idea of making Android Wear devices compatible with iOS devices.

When Jeff Chang spoke to the Huffington Post UK he was quoted saying, “We always want as many users as possible to enjoy our experience, so in terms of enabling more people to use Android Wear we’re very interested in making that happen.” From this quote you can really tell that Chang is enthusiastic about Android Wear and wants to get the product into more peoples hands, so thinking that Android Wear will be compatible with iOS in the near future is not crazy to think. After all, remember the MyGlass app? The companion app for Google Glass that Google offered on Android as well as iOS.

When Chang did directly comment on possible cross-platform support for Android Wear he said, “It’s not always completely up to us right? There are technical constraints, API constraints so we are trying really hard.” Chang is completely right in his concerns in bringing Android Wear to other platforms but the fact that Google Glass works with iOS gives us some hope for Android Wear at least hitting iOS. Windows phone and BlackBerry? We wouldn’t go that far.

What we can say about Android Wear coming to iOS is this, if it doesn’t happen it will not be due to Chang an his team’s unwillingness to do so, it will be due to iOS constraints. We can tell from Chang’s love for his product and his willingness to do whatever it takes to get it into new hands that we he and his team are already probably working on iOS compatibility. We might even go as far as saying Android Wear will be compatible with iOS early next year if things go well. If Android Wear does come to iOS it would be a great move on Google’s part. Making Android Wear cross-platform will do nothing but benefit Google and Android Wear sales and may even get some iOS users to switch over to Android in the future.
