Android Headliner: Why Is Up-To-Date Software Important In Emerging Markets?

Moto-X-Lollipop-AH-1

Many manufacturers these days are trying to make an impact in emerging markets. Why? Well, a significant amount of those markets are rather big and they see a great prospect in opening up shop there. Let’s take India, for example, this is the second biggest smartphone market in the world, only the Chinese market is bigger than India. A lot of manufacturers are turning their aim towards markets like India, HTC for example is trying to make an impact over there in order to sell more handsets, Google has released their initial batch of Android One devices in India and even Motorola started selling their products over there last year. Brazil, Indonesia, and other Latin American markets are similar… there are lots of great examples for this.

Emerging markets will definitely be the talk of the town in 2015, no doubt about that. We’ll see many smartphone launches in such markets and a lot of diversity as well. Now, regular updates are important for any smartphone platform, Android included. Android, as a platform, had issues with fragmentation before and even though it’s not as pronounced nowadays, it’s still an issue. Certain manufacturers like to put heavy skins on top of Android and this slows down the update process quite significantly, while that’s not the case on iOS for example. Google is trying to take steps in order to fix this at least to some extent, but the fragmentation is still very much pronounced and it will be interesting to see what happens in the future.

Up-to-date software is important to most everyone, and perhaps even more important in emerging markets than anywhere else. There is not straight answer to the question in the title, but there are a lot of variables to consider. In certain countries, people use their smartphone/tablet for everything, computers aren’t even a part of the equation. They need the best possible device for as little cash as possible. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather carry an up-to-date software than the one with somewhat higher specs, presuming that the newer software is a true upgrade in experience, of course. New software keeps older phones alive, and that is an important factor for many of us when we purchase our daily drivers, there are a lot of things to consider. I’m sure that each of us has other priorities when buying a smartphone, camera, processing power, screen size and resolution… but all that really doesn’t matter without the appropriate software, now does it?

The latest and greatest software is extremely important when purchasing phones, and in emerging markets even more important than anywhere else. Chinese and Indian smartphone OEMs, for example, haven’t exactly been the fastest to deliver software updates, at least not in 2014 and years before it. This actually leaves a lot of breathing space for other OEMs to leave a good impression in such markets and turn the attention of consumers their way. You’ll see a lot of competition in such markets this year, basically everyone agrees on that point and hopefully that fact will push manufacturers to be more prompt as far as updating their software goes, everyone will benefit from that fact, not just consumers in emerging markets, at least in my humble opinion. Make sure to let us know what you think in the comments, what are your thoughts on all this?

Android Headliner: The FCC Is Likely To Change Up Net Neutrality Rules, And It Would Be A Good Thing For Customers

Net Neutrality

News on Net Neutrality is everywhere on the internet, and it makes perfect sense since it pertains to the very outlet people are using the consume news on the subject, the internet. There has been much talk about the reclassification of Net Neutrality rules and why it will end up being a good thing for consumers yet a bad thing for large corporations, such as Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Comcast and others, but the largest reason comes down to the fact that if the FCC ends up reclassifying wireless and wireline internet under Title II as a public utility, IPS’s won’t be able to charge more to content providers such as Netflix to ensure they have fast and reliable service connections to give to their customers.

Many companies have spoken out against the use of these paid peering arrangements that internet providers want to put in place, but they aren’t alone as they have been joined by advocates for a more open internet that want to prevent ISP’s from creating such an environment that many believe will hinder innovation, even though companies like Comcast and others claim the extra money will allow them to innovate faster. As the ruling over Net Neutrality regulations is scheduled to have a decision made by February 26th, it’s looking more and more likely that FCC chairman Tom Wheeler is going to reclassify wireless and wireline internet under Title II, which will will basically ban wireless and wireline providers like AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast from favoring specific websites over others and charging extra fees to those they feel they can get more out of. With this ban in place, this will make it better for customers as well as the companies who are in favor of Wheeler’s proposal for reclassification, because neither will end up having to pay even higher costs.

Having both broadband and wireless internet under the same classification will also bring both service types closer together, while also protecting consumers and content providers from the likes of the companies we access our data from. Not all wireless providers are necessarily against these new possible rulings, as Sprint reportedly mentioned that they feel the Title II reclassification wouldn’t affect their ability to provide service, further stating that reclassifying things will keep competition intact. Banning companies that provide internet access to users from favoring certain parties over another so that they might earn some extra cash is will keep things on an even playing field for both customers and content providers, and if companies want to continue to charge a certain amount for their services with faster access, they’ll be forced to innovate instead of having control.

[Birthday] Google Maps Turns 10 Years Old Today, Let's Take A Look Back

Screenshot_2_8_15__5_49_PM It might be hard to believe, but the Google Maps we know and love launched 10 years ago today. Before Android, Chrome, Google Plus, Youtube, and most of the other services that make up the core of the Google experience, we had Maps. And while it might be saying too much to argue that Maps led the way to Google's recent successes, it is certainly under-appreciated for its role.

The Beginning

Google Maps wasn't the first online map service.

Top 10 Android News Stories This Past Week: Feb. 8th – 2015

AH Google Glass

If you ended up stumbling upon our top 10 news stories of the week last Sunday, then you already know we’ll be doing a weekly spot for the opportunity to give people a recap on what’s happened in the prior week’s news regarding the world of Android. This week, it seems that some of last year’s flagships are starting to finally get their update to Android 5.0 Lollipop, so we’ll kick things off by briefing you on those devices involved. The HTC One M8 was one of last year’s loved devices, and for T-Mobile variant owners it’s scheduled to receive the software upgrade tomorrow. T-Mobile’s HTC One M8 isn’t the only HTC device slated for the software version bump though, as Sprint’s HTC One M8 was reported to have started getting the update just a couple of days ago.

Sprint also seems to have reached an agreement to co-brand Radio Shack locations after Radio Shack filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy, which could see Sprint operating exclusively inside of Radio Shack retail locations pending approval of the deal. For you modders out there owning an HTC Google Nexus 9 tablet, it gained support for CyanogenMod 12 this past week, so flash to your heart’s content. If you’re a Chromebook owner, you might be happy to know that Google is ever expanding their offering of Android Apps on Chromebooks, having added six new apps this past week including Yo, SlideShare, and Tapatalk. Some of the biggest news this week centers around Verizon’s variant of the Google Nexus 6, which is yet to be made available, but it seems that will all change on Feb 26th which is the rumored date for the launch. What surprised us in the sea of tech news was that some universities are apparently banning or will be looking into banning students from wearing any sort of watches during exams for fear they might be using a smartwatch with which they can cheat. For some more lighthearted news, Google seems to have something big to announce in partnership with Mattel at the end of this week, as they sent out invites this past week for an event to happen on Feb 13th. Also in Google news, Nest CEO Tony Fadell apparently wants to completely redesign Google Glass from Scratch. You can check out the full stories below of some of the top news articles in Android.

[Weekend Poll] How Much Internal Storage Do You Have Left On Your Smartphone?

DSC06856

This weekend's poll is inspired by a poll we did last year, and namely, the top comment on that poll: how much remaining storage is available on your smartphone right now? This is actually a pretty interesting question, because it speaks directly to the issue of just how much storage the average person will use on their phone regardless of its capacity.

So, how many gee-bees are you working with? Cast your vote below.

[Rumor Smash] NVIDIA's SHIELD Tablet To Be Refreshed This Summer - Don't Hold Out For A New Model In March

tegra Earlier this week a report surfaced about a successor to NVIDIA's high-powered SHIELD Tablet coming "within a couple of months," to be announced at the GPU Technology Conference starting on March 17th. The report claimed that the new SHIELD Tablet would be using NVIDIA's next-gen mobile chipset, the Tegra X1, which was announced at CES 2015 without any accompanying smartphone or tablet.

A new generation of SHIELD hardware powered by the Tegra X1 is a no-brainer - despite tepid interest outside of the Android and gaming communities, NVIDIA has shown no sign of slowing down its first-party mobile brand.
