LG G5 Confirmed for February 21 Unveiling

The LG G5 is coming to MWC on February 21. LG confirmed that the device will arrive in a couple of weeks, along with the name, through a Tweet posted to their official Twitter account this afternoon. The Tweet is accompanied by three images that all show off the number “5” in some form, along with the hashtag #LGG5.

We knew that LG was hosting a major press event at the conference and assumed that this phone would be the star. I guess we no longer have to assume.

So far, LG has been able to keep the G5 behind locked doors and few leaks have sprung. However, we did manage to share some images of the G5 stuck inside of a dummy box that was meant to preserve its true appearance. We do know that it’ll have dual cameras, though, along with a metal body, USB Type-C port, rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and volume rocker moved back to the side of the phone.

How exciting.

Question of the Day: What Was the Last App You Paid For?

I would likely be shocked to see just how much I have spent inside of Google Play, whether it is on apps, games, movies, or whatever, but I’m sure the amount is quite substantial. You can head into Google Play and check out all of your recent activity, however, you would have to do the math yourself and add up all of your expenses to come to a total. Who has time for that nonsense? Instead, we want to know what your last app purchase was. Was it a standalone utility app? Game? Maybe even a $0.99 in-app purchase?

As for me, the last app I purchased was the Chrooma Keyboard. So far, I love it. I asked Kellen what app was his last purchase, and his was also Chrooma. I guess that means you should go check that keyboard out.

Tell us down below, what was the last app you purchased?

Google Safe Browsing Now Protects You From Those Shady, Fake “Download” Buttons

Google’s Safe Browsing team is continuously looking for ways to protect your browsing experience from creepy bad guys on the internet. As recently as December, they announced that their technologies now protect hundreds of millions of users who have chosen Chrome for Android as their browser of choice. They are also attempting to warn users before they enter a website that may be mimicking a trusted entity or that will try and get you to do something like share a password.

In the latest update from the Safe Browsing team, Google announced that websites with social engineering that could lead you into doing something you probably don’t want to do, like clicking a deceptive button or ad, will be flagged and show warnings before you enter them.

Some examples would be like the image below, that looks like a download or play button, but is really a nasty ad that probably activates a pop-under and who knows what other kinds of garbage. These buttons are all over the web, especially on sites that make a living by offering up downloadable or streamed content. The goal of them is to trick you into clicking them because you think they will initiate a download or start a stream of the content on the page.

Here is another example. In this image, a sneaky ad or script is trying to trick you into updating software on your device. Of course, if you click on that, you could initiate the download of spyware or a virus or be re-directed to a spammy ad page for some garbage product you would never buy.

Google plans to show the warning that you are seeing at the top of this post before you enter sites like this. As someone who spends all day, every day on the internet, I am now fully expecting to see these warnings everywhere. And that’s a good thing. Deceptively dirty ads like fake download buttons have been a nuisance for too long.

Alto’s Adventure Hits Android for Free on February 11

After quite the wait, Alto’s Adventure will arrive on Google Play this February 11. Not only is this great news, but the game will be free to download, instead of costing a couple of bucks as it does on iOS. Apparently, Android has a bit of a problem with piracy, so in a move to ensure that everyone gains access to the game legitimately, Alto’s Adventure will be free to download, but also come with “opt-in bonuses” to make sure the developers are receiving their fair compensation. Do note, the developers state that the core gameplay will be unhindered by the free price tag.

Alto’s Adventure is described as an endless snowboarding odyssey, one which has players rescuing runaway llamas, outwitting mountain elders, and grinding rooftops. As you fly across the beautiful skies, you will collect stars, unlock new characters, and be soothed by a wonderful soundtrack.

The game’s arrival for Android was first teased in September of last year, so we have been waiting every so patiently for its release. Finally, the time has arrived.

Once the game is live, we will let you know.

The Droid Life Show: Episode 100

Today is the day! After putting it off for what seems like a solid couple of months, we are finally sitting down for the official episode 100 of the Droid Life Show. It might have taken us a good 3 or so years to get here, but we made it and sometimes, that’s all that matters…or something.

On today’s episode, we probably won’t talk much about current affairs. While the Galaxy S7 and G5 are around the corner and quite exciting, we thought we would instead use episode 100 to reminisce a bit about Android and the past 6+ years of Droid Life’s existence. Seriously, we’ve been around for that long! The show will feature Tim and I, along with Ron (probably for the last time). We’ll talk about our favorite Android phones and moments or OS updates, random travel memories, and more.

Along with the show, we are celebrating the occasion with some giveaways as well. How does a gold Nexus 6P sound? Yep, you could win one of those. We also have a few hundred dollars in Google Play credits to hand out too. Exciting, right? To enter to win, we’ll update this post right around show time with Rafflecopter widgets that will give you instructions.

Join us at 2PM Pacific (5PM Eastern) for the fun.

If you miss us live, feel free to subscribe to us by following one of the links below. We have a video embed as well, along with an IRC chat. Also, we’ll be chatting through the YouTube feed too.

This Android-Powered Bathroom Mirror is Dope

After searching the market with no success, a Googler set out to make a futuristic mirror for his bathroom. Using easy-to-acquire components, he built a mirror that could display local weather, news headlines, and the time. In the future, he hopes to be able to display anything that has a Google Now card.

As for the construction, a two-way mirror was used, display panel, controller board, plus a bunch of random components to fuse it all together. For the UI, select Android APIs were utilized, and powering the unit, is a Amazon Fire TV Stick. At first, the Googler experimented with a Chromecast, followed by a Nexus Player, but for now, a Fire TV Stick is being used.

Naturally, there is no how-to for this project quite yet, but possibly in the future. Given this is a Googler we are talking about, we would love to see this project made into something a bit more obtainable for your average consumer.

Below, check out the photo of how it looks in the bathroom, followed by a “Behind the Curtain” photo which shows off all of the hardware inside.

T-Mobile Promo Gets You 4 Lines of Unlimited LTE for $150

This morning, OpenSignal released a new report that T-Mobile is quite excited about, because it mentions their network as “closing the gap with Verizon.” That’s a big deal because Verizon’s network is almost always at the top of the charts when we think of the best network in the wireless business. To celebrate this gap closing news, T-Mobile is kicking off a new family promo that gets a family of four onto unlimited LTE data lines for $150 per month.

The plan is similar to the one T-Mobile has opened up a couple of times now that gives families of four 10GB of data per line for $120. With this unlimited LTE plan, T-Mobile is charging you $50 per line for the first three lines and then giving you the fourth for free. It’s really that simple.

Of course, T-Mobile still offers the 10GB per line for $120 deal as well, in case you don’t need unlimited. Also, keep in mind that you can combine this new family plan with T-Mobile’s half off smartphone event.

T-Mobile says that in order to qualify for this promo, there are “no number port-ins, no trade-ins, and no need to purchase a new phone.” The deal is open to new and existing customers.

More on this new T-Mobile Unlimited deal, head over to T-Mo’s site.

AT&T Galaxy Note 5 Gets Marshmallow Beta, This is What It Looks Like

For those tired of the same ol’ blue theme from Samsung, reported screenshots taken after the update to Marshmallow on the Galaxy Note 5 show quite the change up to the theme of the UI quite a bit. As of today, with the device running Lollipop, Samsung’s stock theme is blue and sort of neon yellowish, but after the update, that blue will change to grey, and the yellow will change to blue. At least, that is if these screenshots are to be believed.

According to Phone Probe, a Galaxy Note 5 owner on AT&T who is part of a very small test group received the update to Marshmallow, and then detailed what all changed after the update. Listed as build number N920AUCU2BPB1, on top of the UI changes, Samsung likely baked in Marshmallow’s top features, such as Doze, additional app permissions, and the user claims the phone feels more snappy overall.

While the new theme looks pretty snazzy, it appears TouchWiz as a whole has not changed. There are still icon themes that don’t match anything from Google, and Samsung still has many preloaded apps onboard. The file size for the Marshmallow update is listed at 1355MB, or 1.3GB.

If you are a Galaxy Note 5 owner, the latest intel we have is that Samsung is shooting to release the Marshmallow update some time this month. Once more concrete info is known, we will update you.

Check out the screenshots, then leave your impressions in the comments below.

Swiftkey Confirms That It Will Join Microsoft, Android and iOS Apps Will Live On

This morning, both Swiftkey and Microsoft confirmed yesterday’s last-minute, late-breaking, blockbuster news concerning the two joining forces. And yep, it’s official – Swiftkey has been acquired by Microsoft.

In short blog posts to Swiftkey and Microsoft blogs, the two talk about the predictive technology behind the popular keyboard, how many keystrokes it has saved, that many companies rely on it, and that this is a match made in heaven. More importantly, Swiftkey confirms that its Android and iOS keyboard apps will live on and be free. They didn’t mention this as some sort of temporary thing, either. This doesn’t sound like Microsoft’s Sunrise acquisition, where the goal all along was to kill the best calendar app on the planet and fold it into an email app most of us would prefer not to use. Nope, this sounds like Swiftkey as a stand-alone keyboard app is here to stay.

Feeling better now?
