Make your Android Wear device look like an Apple Watch with Pear watchfaces

The Apple Watch was all the hype this week. Us Android fans may not be all about the new smartwatch, but we know at least a handful of you like the interesting UI the Cupertino giant has put together. If there is one thing we love about Android Wear is the open philosophy it follows. You can even make your Android Wear smartwatch look like an Apple Watch!

The guys from UhrArt have posted a couple watchfaces that will give any Android Wear device the soon-to-go-popular look of the Apple Watch, with the dark background, small icons and all. Not really our style here at Android Authority, but we do love that we have the freedom to do this. And it’s not only for developers, even you can create your own watchfaces!

This is made possible thanks to apps like UhrArt’s WearFaces, which allows you to make, customize and manage your watchfaces. They made a version for round and square Android wear screens, as well as energy-efficient versions of both.

These can be downloaded straight from the Developer’s website. They can also be applied via the WearFaces app, which is available from the Google Play Store. You can take a look at the video below to watch a nifty tutorial on how to apply these watchfaces.

Beat that, Apple!

Is Polar the best acquisition acquisition announced by Google?

Spend any time on the web’s social networks and you are bound to run across a poll. While some polls probably have some legitimate value in being asked, a frequent strategy for companies is to use polls to drive traffic to their content. Of course, Polar would like for you to think their service is all about “the simple idea that everyone has an opinion worth hearing.” Wherever their value lies, Google wants a piece of it as the company has been acquired by the search giant.

On the surface, the concept seems to be to unleash Polar and their polling prowess loose on Google+ to somehow improve the platform. However, some are suggesting Google was really interested in the brainpower behind Polar. Co-founder Luke Wroblewski has been a big proponent of designing services for mobile platforms first, a nod to the growth of smartphones and tablets versus more traditional platforms.

Google appears to be close to releasing Android L for public consumption and has already been transitioning some apps to their new Material Design guideline. The timing of the Polar acquisition suggests it may be geared to something further down the road. Keep this in mind when Android M rumors start to surface.

Do you know all the features in your Sony Xperia Z3?

It’s so easy to stick to your usual technology and services when migrating devices. New phones often come with new features that will blow your mind and change your daily lives, but we often dismiss them. Sony wants to make sure you don’t fall in this black tech hole.

The Japanese manufacturer has posted an article listing 9 things “you didn’t know you could do” with your Sony Xperia Z3. We are willing to bet many of you don’t know every single one of these features, so let’s go over the list together.

• Mobile payments: This phone has an NFC chip, allowing it to handle tap-and-pay services like ISIS.


• Optimize audio settings for Sony headphones: This phone can recognize what Sony headphones you are using and optimize the sound specifically for them.


• Video recording pause: You don’t need to stop while recording now. The Sony Xperia Z3 allows you to pause and continue recording at will, keeping it all in one clip.


• Video screen capturing: You can record what you are doing in your screen, much like screen cap in a computer.


• Customizable settings: The settings in the notification area are very customizable, making them easier to use.


• Stamina mode: The Sony Xperia Z3 has amazing battery life, but if you really need to push your battery’s boundaries you can use Sony’s Stamina modes to extend battery life to over a week.


• Better screen rotation: The device improves auto rotation based on how you hold your device. Ever tried using a phone laying down? You will love the Xperia Z3 if you have.


• Gestures: The Xperia Z3 does all the cool things you can wish for, like double-tapping to wake, turning phone to silence and holding your device to your face to answer a call.


• Unlock with bluetooth: This one is a bit of a new one. If you have a Sony smartwatch or bluetooth accessory. You can set it to bypass your password or pin to unlock your device when in close proximity.

New Moto X Pure Edition: unlocked, off-contract and with no slowdowns

The New Moto X is one hell of a device, but we know the system can be a bit hectic (especially in the USA). Contracts, update delays and locked SIM card slots are problems we must deal with. If you want to avoid such difficulties, Motorola just may have the solution for you.

This Moto X Pure Edition would come without limitations or cumbersome delays.

A new report from The Verge states the unlocked, unbranded version of the new Moto X is to be labeled as “Pure Edition”. This Moto X Pure Edition would come without limitations or cumbersome delays.

We all know carrier-branded smartphones get updates much later, as the carrier has to optimize these for their network and services. It doesn’t help that they are often SIM-locked, forcing you to stay with the same network or purchase a whole new smartphone.

Purchasing off-contract, unlocked devices is starting to become more attractive. Especially as powerful phones become more affordable. The Moto X Pure Edition (if it is to be called that) seems like a great option. We have tested the device and fell in love with it.

Is HTC creating a GoPro-like camera accessory for their smartphones?

It wasn’t but a few short days ago that HTC started sending tech media invites to a “double exposure” event. This theme had us thinking that the device would focus on a camera of some sort, though we weren’t sure if that meant a new phone with an improved camera or some sort of new feature they came up with that was too big not to make a lot of noise over.

We may have a bit of an early answer. According to Bloomberg, HTC is looking to introduce a rugged camera that would join the likes of GoPro — that is, a camera that can be used to record some element-heavy action such as off-roading or snorkeling. The device is said to have an ultra-wide 16 megapixel sensor, and has connectivity options of WiFi and Bluetooth.

Immediately coming to mind is a scenario where you go on a biking trip and record every bit of it with the camera. It then automatically spits video and images back to a phone such as, say, that HTC One M8 so you can create an awesome highlight in, say, Zoe.

It’s not the most off the wall prediction considering external camera attachments have been done before. Sony’s QX lineup is one such example. They use external DSLR-quality lenses that can attach to your smartphone and be used as if you had an actual mirror-less camera.

.Of course, this is all speculation based on a very early rumor so we can’t let our imagination get the best of us just yet. It shouldn’t be long before HTC clears everything up for themselves as the event is slated to take place October 8th. Let us know if you’d dig something like that should it come to pass.

Xperia Z3 Compact is up for pre-order in UK at a great price

Sony is doing lots of things right in its quest to become a force in the mobile industry, and offering quality compact devices is one of its smartest decisions. No other Android phonemaker has delivered true flagship specifications in “mini” devices, leaving Sony’s Xperia Compact series as the best option in the small device category.

At IFA last week, Sony launched the Xperia Z3 Compact, a 4.6-inch device combining a powerful processing package with a great camera and other top features. Now the device is up for pre-order at several UK retailers, and the price is surprisingly good.

Clove Technology and Handtec, two of the country’s biggest electronics retailers, are offering the Xperia Z3 Compact at about £350, VAT included. Handtec has the device up for pre-order in black, white, green, and orange for £347.99, while Clove only has black, white, and orange models, for £349.99. These are prices for the 16GB model.

For comparison, the Galaxy Alpha costs £500 at the same retailers.

This is an excellent price for a great device, especially considering that Xperia Z1 Compact (launched at CES in January) costs £310 on Sony and Amazon UK.

Interestingly, Sony and Amazon have also put up the Xperia Z3 Compact for pre-order, but at a much steeper £429. It’s not clear why Clove and Handtec offer so much better deals, or if their prices will remain low permanently or just for the launch.

Both Clove and Handtec ship internationally, North America included. While Sony has shown some more interest in making a bigger presence in the US, we’re not sure if the Z3 Compact will ever go on sale there. According to this user on Reddit, the total cost of importing the Xperia Z3 Compact (from Handtec) to the US is around $550.

Gameloft Launches Spider-Man Unlimited Onto Google Play

There is probably no shortage of Spider-Man games on the Play Store, in fact Gameloft themselves already have a couple of Spider-Man apps available to download based off of The Amazing Spider-Man and Amazing Spider-Man 2. This new title, called Spider-Man Unlimited is a totally different take on the Spider-Man games that have been introduced before, as it takes on an endless runner type of style, while previous Spider-Man games(at least from Gameloft)have always been action titles that involved free movement of the characters and weren’t endless runners. It’s a different spin, but there are some regular action game elements baked in so things are a little unique and it sounds like it might be quite fun and addicting.

The game is free so if you’re dying to check it out it won’t cost you a penny, and Gameloft is quick to point out that this is the first free Spider-Man game. Gameloft is terming this a “narrative runner” as they have tied in a comic book like story dialogue and user interface design, and the graphics even have a hand drawn stylized look like the Captain America game that they previously launched a few months back. There is an included story mode which has boss battles, 25 missions per issue(there’s another way that Gameloft has tried to make this feel like you’re playing out a comic book)and it even has daily and weekly events which can be accessed from events mode.

A cool and interesting element that Gameloft has added in is the ability to play as multitudes of the different Spider-Man characters in the Marvel universe, kind of like costumes for your character in a way. These new playable characters are obtainable through the collecting of Spider-Man cards that you can grab during missions presumably, and you can even fuse cards together to make the ultimate Spider-Man. If you really just want to dominate the leaderboards, you can play in Unlimited Mode and run till you can literally run no more. Gameloft says that there will be consistent releases of new Spider-Men, so if you enjoy the collecting aspect of games this feature should delight you. The storyline centers around the Sinister Six who are traveling from dimension to dimension destroying everything in their path, and of course it’s your job to stop them. Can you do it?
