Galaxy Note 5 Unboxing and First Impressions!

Samsung has done the Galaxy Note 5 launch right. Instead of announcing the phone and then making us wait a month or more before we could buy it, they announced it and then made it almost immediately available for pre-order with an in-store arrival date of just a week later. For many, pre-orders have already arrived on doorsteps. This is how all phone launches should be done, if you ask us.

Now that we are back from Samsung’s NYC event and have one in house, it’s time to get to reviewing it. First, we thought we would do a quick Galaxy Note 5 unboxing to get the juices flowing. This way, you all get to see the beginning of our journey with this phone as a daily deivce, another tour of it in an environment not filled with a few hundred other journalists, and if our impressions have changed within the last few days.

So, this is our unboxing and first impressions of the Galaxy Note5!

T-Mobile Skipping Galaxy Note 5 Pre-Orders, Purchase Device Starting Tomorrow

T-Mobile’s CEO, the one and only John Legere, announced today through Twitter that the company would be skipping the pre-order process entirely for the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 Edge+, and instead, will accept orders for the device beginning tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6am PST. Once your order goes through, Legere states that T-Mobile will ship your device, “ASAP.”

Samsung made a great move, making this device available shortly after announcement, allowing the hype to continue and not die out. Those who ordered the phone through AT&T and Verizon are already receiving their orders, delighting many who had hoped Samsung would not wait long to launch the device following the unveiling.

To learn more about these new phones from Samsung, check out our coverage from the unveiling here.

Will you be purchasing one of these devices?

Official Android Marshmallow Statue Reveal

We know that you have been keeping up with all of today’s Android 6.0 Marshmallow talk, including our ongoing list of “What’s new,” the new boot animation, behind the scenes video of the name unveiling, download links for the latest preview, and the new wallpapers, but there was still one item we have all been waiting for – the official statue reveal video.

That video is now live. It features a bunch of Googlers waiting around for the statue’s sheet to be pulled, so that they can all snap pictures and snack on whatever the treat is underneath. Even with their factory screen protectors on, Googlers always seem to enjoy the occasion.

Mmmm, marshmallows.

Google Intros Dedicated Hangouts Webpage for Calls and Messages

Google now has a dedicated web URL for Hangouts users, with the service now residing at http://ift.tt/13QW17L. Here, you can access all of your chat information, start up new messages, find contacts, and place calls through the service.

It’s basically a glorified extension, something that already exists inside of Gmail and for Chrome Browser users, but hey, more choices!

In the navigation drawer, you can find links to where you can download Hangouts for your chosen platform, such as Chrome OS, iOS, and Android. Although, if you are reading this, I assume you are on Android and already have Hangouts installed.

Go play with it. It’s pretty.

In Preview 3 of Android 6.0, Google included a handful of new wallpapers, all of which we have for you below. Some of the new wallpapers will look like releases from the past because of their aerial views, but Google also mixed in new colors and textures into many.

There are 9 wallpapers in total. You’ll find four of them below, along with a .zip full of all 9.

To see the rest of the changes we have found so far, be sure to check out our What’s New in Android 6.0 post.

How to: Turn on System UI Tuner in Android 6.0 Marshmallow Preview 3

The System UI Tuner that was first introduced in Android M’s preview 1 and 2 is back again in Android 6.0’s preview 3, only it’s not as easy to find as it once was. In fact, Google has completely hidden the setting unless you perform a secret action to enable it.

To enable System UI Tuner in Android 6.0 Marshmallow preview 3, pull down your notification shade and long-press on the Settings gear icon for up to 5 seconds. Once you let go, you should see a pop-up with the message “Congrats! System UI Tuner has been added to Settings.” And as that message suggests, you can head into settings, scroll to the bottom, and find an option for System UI Tuner.

With it enabled, you can then tweak your quick toggle tiles, add or remove items from the status bar, and even enter Demo Mode.

To turn it back off, tap the action overflow menu from within the System UI Tuner section and choose to turn it off. You can also long-press on the Settings icon again for 5 seconds.

To read up on the System UI Tuner, be sure to check this post of ours.

What’s New in Android 6.0 Marshmallow Developer Preview 3

As I’m sure you saw, Google announced that Android M is now officially Android 6.0 Marshmallow. They even have a new statue to celebrate the naming. But even though we have a name and build number, we are still in the developer preview stage before this goes stable and to your non-Nexus Android device. The latest preview is developer preview 3 (now available for download), which Google has said is a “final incremental update.” Because of that, we aren’t expecting a need for a bunch of hands-on posts with major changes like we did with preview 1 and 2. Instead, we’ll try to gather it all in this single post with updates as we find more.

Here we go.

First things first, but yes, they have changed the version number in the latest developer preview to 6.0. It said “M” up until today, so that’s cleaned up.

As for the Easter Egg that we always look for, it’s still just the shruggy face (¯\_(ツ)_/¯) that we saw from preview 1 and 2.

If you have the System UI Tuner enabled and settings tweaked, Google is letting you know by adding a wrench icon next to the Settings icon in the notification shade.

Huawei Nexus Gets Case Schematic Render Treatment

Just last Friday, we may have got our first glimpse at what to expect from the LG-made Nexus device for 2015, followed by an actual photo of the supposed device this morning. Now, the same is being done for the Huawei-made Nexus smartphone, as 3rd-party renders have been made from measurements sent out to case manufacturers.

From what we know, detailed by countless reports and rumors, the Huawei Nexus will be larger than the LG Nexus, featuring a reported 5.7″ QHD display, plus a fingerprint reader on its backside (same as the LG Nexus). Along the bottom, a USB Type-C port sits, with dual front-facing speakers gracing the face of the phone. And for anyone who keeps track, the 3.5mm headphone jack appears to be on the topside.

Other than that, the device looks rather bland, somewhat reminiscent of an older iPhone — at least to our trained eyes.

With the leaks happening left and right, and with Google making Android 6.0 “Marshmallow” completely official, we should be close to an unveiling. Real close.

DL Favorites: Gallery Apps

DLF, or Droid Life’s Favorites, is a series of articles reviewing our favorite apps in a given category. The goal of these articles isn’t to extensively review every single option out there and determine which is “the best,” but rather to give you a few of our favorite apps in a category. This week we look at Droid Life’s favorite gallery apps.

Even though we call the tiny computers in our pockets “phones,” I like to think of them as communications devices. I use my “phone” almost exclusively as a means of communication. Sometimes I use my voice, sometimes text, sometimes I’m receiving messages from others, and a lot of the time I’m taking, viewing, and sending pictures. Below are my favorite apps to view and organize my pictures and videos.

Google Photos

It should come as no surprise that my favorite way to view my photos and videos is with Google Photos. Google Photos is more than a gallery, of course, allowing you to upload all of your photographs to the cloud for free at high quality or you can pay to upload everything in full quality and pay for the Google Drive storage you need. It’s a fantastic deal, but that alone would only make it comparable to all the other photo services out there. Google Photos isn’t like everything else, though; Google Photos is magic.

I’ve spent hours and hours organizing my photos in Dropbox only to find a month later that even more organization is needed and it’s still difficult to find the picture I really want to see. Google Photos solves all of those problems and more. To try and put it lightly, Google Photos is one of the best products to come to market in the last ten to twenty years. That’s how good it is.

So what makes Google Photos so good for browsing and organizing? In order to browse photos you usually have to decide what you’re looking for specifically and then find it based on how it’s organized. Most people probably organize their photos based around date and then maybe break photos into folders for location or events or months. With Google Photos you don’t have to do any of this. Just tap search and select what you want. Want to find pictures of dogs? Type dog. Pictures of your sister? Tap her picture under the people section. Pictures from your vacation in 2004. Type vacation 2004. It’s that simple and yes, the vast, vast majority of the time it really works. Are you a photographer who shoots in RAW? Google Photos will actually show you those files, something the competition (read Dropbox) doesn’t do on mobile or web.

If for some reason you’ve been holding back and haven’t tried Google Photos, stop what you’re doing and start using it. I would still recommend keeping a second copy of everything (either by also using something like Dropbox or remembering to download a copy of everything new every so often if you have lots of free time), but make Google Photos your primary photo solution now.

Focus

Maybe you like Google Photos and use it, but you want a way to browse and categorize photos on your phone locally for a specific project. Or maybe you just hate the cloud and want to sync your photos locally but still have a nice way to browse and organize photos. If that’s you, take a look at Focus.

Focus is a brand new gallery app that automatically organizes your photos for you under tags. It defaults to using tags like Camera, Videos, Download, Instagram, etc. but you can add tags like Family, Art, Food, Nature, Travel and more. Focus also allows you to view full EXIF data for photographs.

In addition to this, if you unlock the Premium features for $3.79 you can add custom tags to your photos for organization (think Gmail labels for your photos). This is vastly superior to folder organization because you can label a photo with multiple tags. For example, I can label a photo from my brother’s birthday party with “Calvin’s Birthday Party 2014″ and “Calvin” and “Cake” and then find that photo with any of those tags.

Focus has a few other great Premium features. Focus lets you set a passcode for the app for when you want to show a friend a photo without having to hand over all of your photographs. You can even manage your tags so that the app only shows you the tagged photos, or collections, you want to see. So, for example, if you never want to see screenshots you can remove those from the normal gallery view. Premium also unlocks a night mode and gives you access to future features like Google Photos integration. Focus is free on the Google Play Store.

Between Google Photos and Focus you should be able to organize your photos in a breeze. Let us know in the comments how you organize your photos.

AT&T’s $60 GoPhone Accounts Gain 4GB of Usable Data in Canada, Mexico

For AT&T customers using the $60 a month GoPhone plan, the carrier is making the 4GB of high-speed data on your account usable for travel in the countries of Mexico and Canada.

Not new, but definitely noteworthy, when users pay with Auto Refill, they also save $5 on their monthly bill, bringing the total to $55 a month for 4GB of high-speed data in the US and across the border on both sides. These GoPhone accounts also feature AT&T’s Rollover feature, where unused data amounts carry over for a 30 day period.

Lastly, if you don’t plan on traveling to Canada or Mexico, but do know people there, AT&T is adding unlimited talk and text to mobile and landlines inside those countries.

Check it out.

Forget the Renders: This is Probably the LG Nexus 5 (2015)

Prior to the weekend, renders of the LG Nexus 5 (2015) surfaced that were allegedly created by schematics given to case makers. We wouldn’t normally get too excited about these had they arrived via case maker hawking their latest products, but they were created instead by tech websites looking to provide imagery of the device sans case in its potentially real form.

Yesterday, a new image surfaced that is in no way a render. This image, as far a we can tell, is of the actual device in the wild, in someone’s hand. What we have here is a white LG Nexus 5 (2015) with “NOT FOR SALE” note burned into the body just above the “NEXUS” logo.

While this isn’t the greatest picture ever taken, it’s far from the worst when it comes to blurry cam leaks. The phone looks identical to those renders from last week, only a bit more polished. We have the camera nipple/hump, fingerprint sensor situated just below it, and a flash with laser autofocus set off to the top left. The phone’s finish appears to be a matte white, similar to what we saw on the original Nexus 5 and Nexus 9. It’s clean, simple, and completely Google.

And is it just me, or does that sticker say LGH791? Is that our model number?

Other thoughts?
