Pocket Mortys Hits Google Play, Kinda Like Pokémon, but Mortys

Available on Google Play, you can pick up Adult Swim’s latest creation for mobile devices, Pocket Mortys. Pretty much a spoof on Pokémon, the game features 70 different Mortys for you to capture, train, and use against baddies, which you will find as you walk around different multiverse levels.

Throughout the game, you will be greeted by well-known characters from the series, such as Bird Person and Mr. Meeseeks. Much like Pokémon, when you train your Mortys, they will level up, and grow to do more damage on bad guys. In addition to the main plot, the game is filled with countless side quests to fill up an usual amount of spare time you might have.

Are there in-app purchases? You better believe it. Other notes on the game include non-compatibility with devices powered by an Intel Atom chip. The developers are currently working on a fix, in case you have a device affected by this.

Google Maps Gets “Driving” Mode to Give You Suggestions on When to Drive

Google is pushing out a pretty decent new feature to Google Maps this week, called Driving mode. The mode attempts to help you decide if now would be a good time to leave for home or to the gym or to other favorite destinations or to stay put. It provides quick overviews on ETAs, traffic updates, etc.

The new Driving option can be found in the slideout menu in Google Maps or you can create a shortcut to it on your home screen, as it will show up as an option in your home screen widget picker after updating to the newest version of Maps.

With Driving mode up and running, you get what appears as a navigation overview-like UI that will give you suggestions for travel based on the time of day or week. A lot of this is driven off of your location history, so if you don’t mind Google knowing that sort of thing, logging into Google Maps is a good idea.

The update appears to be rolling out slowly as version 9.19.

Google+ 7.0.0 Update for Android Improves Viewing Experience, Search

Along with November’s big Google+ overhaul came a bunch of nagging new issues that the social service’s most faithful users were eager to see fixed or tweaked. It may have taken a couple of months, but an update to the Android version of G+ is ready to address some.

For one, the bottom tab bar will now hide when scrolling. We’re talking about that odd new permanent bar at the bottom of your feed with buttons for Home, Collections, Communities, and Notifications. Yeah, that weird black thing that doesn’t seem to follow any Google design guideline. It hides!

The update also allows for the app to remember you position when you return back to it, display autocomplete suggestions when you search, and at least 69 other bug fixes.

14 accessibility issues addressed
Automatically hide the bottom tab bar when scrolling (note: not on Notifications screen yet)
The home stream now remembers your position when you return to it (after going to a different screen like Notifications)

The update is to version 7.0.0 and will begin rolling out over the next couple of days.

Pushbullet Brings Picture Messages (MMS) From Desktop and Improved SMS Reliability

This morning, Pushbullet announced “the last missing feature” for users, MMS support. Once updated on all of your platforms (Android, Windows, Chrome extension), sending picture messages should be just as easy doing it on any other messaging service. On a desktop, you simply drag and drop an image into a chat window or use the paperclip icon for attachments. Do note, Pushbullet requires your device to run Android 5.0+ in order for this feature to work properly.

In addition to MMS support for computers, Pushbullet states they have added improved SMS reliability. In order to do so, the company have rebuilt their texting system. “We now reliably sync outgoing text messages with your phone, ensuring that your messages will reliably send as soon as possible (even if they can’t be sent immediately).” If your smartphone is offline, or if there is another reason your device can’t speak to the Pushbullet servers, the text remains queued and gets sent out as soon as possible.

Updates for the Android app, Chrome extension, and Windows desktop app are rolling out automatically, so be on the lookout. To grab the Android update, follow the Google Play link below.

Report: LG G5 to Feature Modular Design With Slideout Battery, Snapdragon 820, Fingerprint Reader

As claimed in the latest report out of Korea, the G5 from LG will feature quite a change in terms of overall design, according to an eyewitness. As reported, it is said that the G5 will feature a somewhat modular design, with a slide-out removable battery fitting inside of a pullout drawer on the bottom side of the smartphone. To remove the battery, it appears that a user will simply pull the drawer out and replace the battery if needed, although, the phone will charge normally as any other device via a port on the bottom.

In addition to this possible change, it appears LG may move away from rear-facing volume keys on this year’s flagship, placing the volume up and volume down buttons on the side of the device instead. The power button will still be located on the backside, but more interestingly, it is reported that the home button will also double as a fingerprint reader for unlocking the device and using mobile payments.

Other reported specifications include a Qualcomm-made Snapdragon 820 processor, “dual cameras” (likely a reference to front and back-facing cameras, as well as an all-metal design and build. At this time, some believed that LG intends to introduce this smartphone at MWC in February, although, that would be a bit early with regard to normality. Usually, LG launches their G flagships for the US in the April, May, June timeline. However, with all rumors indicating that Samsung is also launching the Galaxy S7 a bit early, then all major Android OEMs may look to hit the market with their 2016 offerings a bit early.

Leak Suggests Three Galaxy S7 Models: S7, S7 Edge, and S7 Edge+

For weeks, we have been operating under the assumption that there will be two new Galaxy S7 models to kick off Samsung’s 2016 campaign in mobile. We assumed those were the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, similar to last year’s launch of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. According to a new leak from @evleaks, we should get those two, but we also may get a third in the Galaxy S7 Edge+.

Evan posted a tiny sampling of an image to his Twitter account of what appears to be marketing material or a snippet from a potential landing page for the three phones when they go live. It lists all three in order of “Galaxy S7 | S7 edge | S7 edge+.” He didn’t include any further commentary with the screenshot, other than that he is surprised that there will be three and that this “does explain a lot.” I think that’s in reference to this ongoing argument over the S7 Edge having a 5.1-inch or 5.5-inch screen. Previous leaks have told us to expect either a 5.1-inch display in the Edge for this year or a bigger, 5.5-inch screen. If what Evan is showing us is a preview of what’s to come, we might get both.

While it feels a bit overkill, having options is never a bad thing. I think what’s throwing some of us, is the fact that Samsung released the S6 and regular S6 Edge with 5.1-inch displays last year to start 2015, then waited until its Galaxy Note launch to also introduce the bigger S6 Edge+. To deviate from that timeline seems odd, but also makes sense at the same time, since the S7 Edge+ would be an S7 variant, not a Note.

Google App Re-Introduces “Allow Rotation” to Home Screens, Auto Tweaks Icon Sizes

Back in the Android M Developer Preview 2, Google briefly enabled an option in the Google App’s settings of “Allow rotation,” which gave phones the ability to rotate home screens into landscape, assuming they were also using the Google Now Launcher. Then, in Preview 3 and up until last night, it disappeared. In last night’s update, though, the option returned in a Google App update that is rolling out to all.

If you want to enable it, because you are interested in living in a world of auto rotations that includes your home screen, just long press on your home screen, tap “Settings,” and you should now see the “Allow rotation” toggle under the “Home screen” section.

Once enabled, you should be able to do this.

Cute.

On a related note, the latest update also seems to be adjusting icon sizes in and around the GNL for some apps, just not all. Take a look at these two screenshots taken before the latest Google App update and then right after. Look at the Diaro, eBay, ESPN, Flixster, Forest, Foursquare, and Grubhub icons – all are now smaller. Of course, Google’s oversized icons didn’t shrink with them, so I’m not exactly sure what the goal was here. Maybe Google will let us know at some point.
