The cPulse Android phone case is loaded with LEDs and dreams

cPulse Swivel Android Case with 128 LEDs

You know what your phone needs? 128 multi-color programmable LED lights embedded into a crazy swivel hinged case. Am I right?

There is a new Kickstarter campaign in the neighborhood, it is called cPulse by Codlight and is just what is described above, a smartphone case that has a bunch of LEDs on it. In addition to the 128 LEDs on the panel, there are three touch buttons ready to accept your commands so to display notifications and take basic actions without actually turning on your phone’s display, or submitting it to grubby fingers.

I almost forgot, there is also an ambient light sensor to enable their mobile lighting sleep system. I could try to explain the articulating hinge assembly that lets you either cover and protect your phone display, or angle the LED panel in any direction to get the best light. I could also try to explain the music lighting player and more, but instead, why don’t you just check out this fun little video they’ve slapped together for us.

If you were wondering how the LED panel gets its juice, you may have guessed that it pulls it from your phone. The case allows you to slide your phone onto its micro USB plug, sipping a modest 180mAh of juice for each full hour of use. Don’t worry though, there is an external USB port so you can plug in without having to dismantle anything. If you were still doing the math, that will be just under 7% battery use per hour on your supported LG G3, HTC One (M8) or Samsung Galaxy S5 running Android 4.4 KitKat.

The case will add about 5.5mm thickness to your smartphone, and up to an additional 86g of weight.

cPulse Android Case with 128 LEDs

What’s the catch?

The problem, or blessing, depending on your point of view, is the need to use cPulse’s APIs, and accompanying lighting recipe file format, to create supported apps. There are a handful all ready to go, like an alarm clock and the ability to show notifications for calls, calendar events, Gmail, SMS, Facebook and Twitter, but further success may depend on third party devs getting on board.

I would be remiss if I did not mention that the cPulse considers HTC’s Dot View case, Phillips Hue lighting system and more as competitors. In fact, the French startup plans to focus on smart lighting more than it does mobile devices. As such, it plans to support future smartphones by supplying 3D files optimized for Sculpteo.com 3D printing, then ship you the electronics so you can snap it all together at home. We might question their decision to forego the actual manufacturing of their product, but we’ll let the campaign have its say on that.

There you have it, a fun new smartphone case for all your extra lighting needs. Head on over to the Kickstarter page for all the details on the Codlight cPulse case. Just do so before August 31st if you are hoping to score a unit for as low as $90.

What do you think, is this the sort of case you would consider for your Android phone?

Google opens Project Ara hardware application to develop modules

Project_Ara_Back_01

Google wants more modules for Project Ara. So how are they getting developers to work with the modular smartphone? With a developer application, of course! If approved and Google brings a developer along for the ride, they can start to produce their own modules with a development board.

There are multiple rounds for applicants to try and get involved. The current round is ending on July 17 as Google has reviewed applications. The next round will start the following day on July 18 and run through August 17. Applicants can expect a response (if approved) one week after the review period has ended.

The development boards will begin shipping to approved applicants at the end of July.

Samsung chatting with SmartThings about purchase for around $200 million

smartthings_products

The next target for Samsung? Your home. The company is reportedly in talks to purchase SmartThings for a deal in the range of $200 million. According to TechCrunch, the deal has yet to be completed but it is very well on its way to being so. Google owns Nest and Apple is launching HomeKit, so it is only right that Samsung gets in on the action.

SmartThings is a company that produces home automation products that connects your home and mobile devices to one another. Its products can be purchased as a bundled kit or individually as a standalone device. These products, spread throughout the home, pair with a mobile device for functionality. It is a costly investment for consumers, but it definitely has benefits.

And with so many of its devices running out in the wild, Samsung can easily market home automation products as a simple tool that works great with its Galaxy line. With SmartThings under its wing (when the deal becomes official), Samsung can bypass having to develop everything on its own and rely on what its acquisition has on the market now and what is has in its pipeline before continuing the development process.

Star Trek fans rejoice, your favorite Android Wear watch face is ready!

Screen Shot 2014-07-15 at 7.45.12 PM

We know how fierce Star Trek fans can get, making Android Wear’s latest watch face the source of much excitement to spread across the world. Simply named “Starwatch”, this exciting Android Wear watch face is based off the popular series.

More specifically, the watch face contains a design based on the show’s main operating system UI. It was called LCARS, which stands for Library Computer Access/Retrieval System. It may not help you save the universe, but the LCARS-based watch face will definitely give you some style and turn some heads. At the very least, it could be the best conversation starter between Star Trek fans.

StarTrekComputer

Aside form what could be the coolest design around, the Starwatch features the time and date. All other features are baked into your usual Android Wear experience, so there was no need to get into much detail here. It’s a simple and fun application.

By the way, some of you may not know how to go about installing this watch face. All you have to do is install the app with your smartphone. Once paired with your Android Wear smartwatch, the icon will not appear in your app drawer. Instead of looking for it there, just head over to your Android Wear watch faces. Starwatch will be there if the device is paired to your smartphone.

You can get the watch face for free, straight from the Google Play Store. So don’t waste any time. Engage!

Snapchat adds Geofilters, location-based photo stickers and labels [VIDEO]

Snapchat screenshots

Snapchat announced a new feature rolling out for their wildly popular app that’s sure to make teens and tweens squeal with joy. They’re called Geofilters and starting today, users will be able to add photo stickers and labels that are unique to their specific location.

For instance, should you find yourself Snapchatting a photo while visiting the Disneyland park, you’ll find Disneyland specific stickers like the logo or stickers available in the photo preview mode (swiping right before snapping a pic). Same goes areas of interest like the Santa Monica Pier, Hollywood, or Times Square. As you may have guess, Geofilters are only available for neighborhoods inside Los Angeles and New York at the moment, but secret overlays — like this one at the Facebook HQ in San Francisco — may also be lurking in popular location spots.

Snapchat assures users that while they’ll need to enable location services for the app, location information will be virtually shredded (just like their photos). While fun, it’s easy to see where Snapchat plans on taking this. With Snapchat’s wide user base, it’s not hard to imagine companies or retailers like Coca-Cola or Levis paying to add their own brands to the mix.

Verizon Terminates Device Payment Program In Favor Of EDGE

AH Verizon Logo 2.1

All good things come to an end sooner or later. Unlike Taco Bell’s beefy crunch wrap burrito that disappears and reappears on the menu, Verizon Wireless has permanently killed off their Device Payment Program on July 13. If you are not too familiar with the Device Payment Program, here’s a little description of what it was about. The Payment Program by Verizon was an option for users to avoid joining the EDGE program. The Program also let users keep their current unlimited data plans, enabling them to buy a full price phone and pay the device off in 12 monthly payments. What was great about it is that it never messed with your data plan, so say if you got a new phone, your unlimited data that you were getting would just transfer on over and you would pay off a new phone. The program may sound nice but the deal wasn’t all that great. For the Device Payment Program you had to pay a $2 monthly fee, which probable isn’t too bad if you have unlimited data and wanted to stay away from joining EDGE.

According to Verizon’s support page, “Beginning 7/13/14, the Device Payment Program will no longer be available for new orders. If you’d like to purchase a new phone or tablet on an installment plan, you may be eligible to participate in our Verizon Edge program.” So what if you are already in the program currently paying off a phone? Well you will stay in the program until your balance is paid off, than when you want to get a new phone you will have to join the EDGE program. The bad part about joining EDGE is that you will have to give up the unlimited data plan that you were holding on to for so long and begin fooling around with the More Everything Plan. So what are your thoughts about the termination of Verizon’s Device Payment Program? Were you a part of it? If so let us know about losing your unlimited data plan and having to switch to EDGE. Unlimited data has seen better days, seems like people are more about the money.

Sprint And T-Mobile Reportedly Banding Together For A Joint Purchase Of 600MHz Spectrum

t-mobile-sprint-ah-1

Part of the reason why T-mobile and Sprint have fought so passionately over the matter of the proposed merger between the two of them, was for the capability to be able to compete on the same level as the two largest wireless carriers in the U.S., Verizon Wireless and AT&T Wireless, for spectrum in the upcoming auction as well as overall service. While the merger still has no confirmation from the regulators on whether or not they’ll approve the deal it seems that Sprint and T-Mobile’s merger plans aren’t the only plans that the two competitors have in the works.

It would appear that they have put together a separate deal to band together(no pun intended)and compete in the upcoming auction for the 600MHz spectrum bands. With the deal being worked on completely separate from their other plans, it’s a wonder if both T-Mobile and Sprint had both been in talks over this second deal for a longer period of time than they have been discussing the merger. The rumors state that Sprint and Big Magenta will follow through with the joint spectrum buying process whether they succeed in getting the merger approval or not, and that they’re both trying to raise a rather large sum of funding to allow them to place bids on TV broadcast owned spectrum. That sum amounts to a hefty amount of $10 billion, although no confirmation has been given on if that number is actually true.

Whether T-Mobile and Sprint’s plans to join forces are so they can keep as much spectrum away from the other two larger carriers as they can or just to make sure that they get the actual needed amounts to progress themselves is up in the air and something we may never know for sure. In addition to the possible joint purchase considering they can even raise the funds to bid, both T-mobile and Sprint may be looking at a long process for the merger to get approved so it’s possible that they are looking at this deal as a contingency. In any case, both carriers seem to be doing all they can to assure some footing on equal ground with Verizon and AT&T.

Google going big with Android One, first phone to launch in October

android one

For Americans, the Android One announcement at Google IO may have been a bit of a lackluster, but this could be the very project that takes Android to 5 billion users. It’s a program that will bring good, affordable smartphones to emerging markets. New reports claim the first device is set to launch this October, in India.

We can assume this will be Micromax’s smartphone, which Google mentioned would be the very first Android One device to launch. At only $100, this could be a major hit in emerging markets. Sources claim this will be a Flipkart exclusive, a retailer that has become very popular in India. After all, their success with the Moto E, X and G has been unparalleled.

android-one-micromax-sub-100

They will definitely need a little push, though. In this competitive market, no new device will make it without some exposure, and Google is willing to help with that. The Search Giant is not giving India just crumbs and emotional support either, they are investing Rs 100 crore, which equals to a billion Rupees (or about 16.7 million USD). All for the sake of taking Android One off the ground and into a successful launch.

Sundar Pichai is expected to visit India and bring us more details soon. So far we know the program also includes manufacturers like Karbonn and Spice, aside from the already-mentioned Micromax. If all goes well, emerging markets will see great low-end smartphones before the end of the year.

android-one-1

The benefit in Android One is that manufacturers can make affordable smartphones and put in their own apps, but the near-stock experience and software backbone will unload much of the work it takes to keep the device updated. Much like the Google Play Edition and Nexus programs, Android One devices will be updated directly from Google. This changes everything, guys. And as we have mentioned in the past, it could be the best announcement we saw at Google IO.

Do keep in mind these are not official announcements, though. Let’s not hold our breath until we get more than just rumors and reports.

The VIA Viega 10.1 Inch Ruggedized Tablet Is Designed To Take A Beating

VIA Viega 10

In the world of ruggedized tablets for more commercial use in real world applications(not the consumer side of things generally but for companies seeking the use of tough design device that can take a little bit of abuse)there are fewer options than we have available to us in the regular consumer market. VIA Embedded is a company that wants to provide companies and enterprise outlets that are looking for a really rugged and tough tablet an option that can suit their needs. Enter the VIA Viega 10, a rugged tablet that is designed for use in real world applications where it is bound to end up taking a fall or two. It’s powered by an ARM chip and of course it runs Android, although only Android 4.2 and not Kit Kat, but that is probably OK for those who are looking for this type of device as the software version might be the least of their concerns.

The specs are as follows. Inside it’s powered by an dual-core ARM Cortex A9 SoC clocked at 1.2GHz, and a Mali-400 DP GPU runs the graphics side of things. Internal storage is set at 16GB, although that space can be expanded upon thanks to the microSD card slot. The VIA Viega 10 is only working with 1GB of RAM, which should be enough for most things but it would have been nice to see 2GB in this thing. The design on the outside of the tablet is ruggedized, but what about the inside? How are the insides protected from things like say.. the elements? Well, luckily rugged really means rugged. The VIA Viega 10 tablet is certified with an IP65 rating, and the display is protected by tempered glass.

It’s also got your standard wireless connection features like WiFi, NFC, GPS, and Bluetooth 4.0 LE, as well as 3G as an added option for those that may want the web features to be usable when off WiFi. VIA Embedded claims a long running 9 hour battery life during the day, which seems suitable for a day’s work. VIA Embedded also offers three models of the Viega 10. Two WiFi only models, one that has a 5MP camera on the rear and one that does not, and then the 3G model which also has the 5MP rear camera. All models also support and carry 2 micro USB 2.0 ports, a micro HDMI port for connecting it to large screens or external monitors, and all models also carry a 2MP front facing camera. No prices were listed at their product page that we could find.
