Back in September of 2014 Sony announced that they would be expanding and opening up their Lifelog API to third party app developers, and that day is finally here as they have just announced that the Lifelog API is now available for developers to take advantage of. Developers are now able to boost their apps with Lifestyle data, which will allow users to integrate the information collected from the senors in their smartphones and wearables and have it shared with compatible third party apps. In addition to opening up the API to developers and third party apps, Sony is also bringing Lifelog to the web, which will allow users of the service to log into their Lifelog account and overview their activity tracking data any time they want as long as they have a device with a web connection.
For developers, this opens up a range of possibilities for integrating useful data into their apps which would allow them to offer their users a more robust experience, like making recommendations on a place to eat based off of Lifestyle data gathered from the Life log app. That is only one such example of course, and the most obvious to us is that through Sony’s Lifelog app, fitness data that’s tracked could be fed into a third party health and fitness application, again, giving users a more robust experience.
With the Lifelog app tracking data like app usage, music usage, sleep and awake times, step length, BMR, height, weight and many other values, all of that data gets fed into the Lifelog platform data store which developers can then access that data through multiple endpoint categories like user profile, activity, and location. Sony has made it pretty simple to get started with the Lifelog API too. All you have to do is start by going to the Lifelog pages and then register your application. Sony states that after your app is registered you can start sending calls to the API immediately, so there’s no waiting period and you can get the ball rolling on integrating Lifelog data into your app whenever you’re ready. While this information is mostly useful for developers, it strikes a chord with the end user, like myself, who is a big fan of the Lifelog app and would love to see it integrated with more third party applications.
